  • I took a quick drive to Pembine, WI to catch the Escanaba & Lake Superior Railroad switching gondolas for Alter Metal, then drove back north to watch them switch 10 full scrap metal cars too.. Some logs hanging off the train got really close to a crossing on County O, nearly taking it out!

For the rail bed under the switch, it’s come to my attention that it’s slightly sunken in.

I think that joint and those insulators that are bolted to the rails are for the crossing signals. The idea is to isolate those rails that run across the road. How far depends on how much warning the signal design engineer decides.

Hey Jason. Unstable loads and bad track, a recipy for diaster that doesnt seem to come. Sure ELS is living on borrowed time. The dust puffs at Pembine look like dried out wet spots. Great switching action too, thanks 👍👍👍👍. Great shot of the knockle slipping too.

I think that was the most poorly loaded wood cars logs sticking out all over. ELS the most poorly maintained rail bed I've seen even excursion trains have better railbeds than ELS I just don't understand

Rail joints are insulated for the crossing gates. Once the last car goes past in that direction they would shut off. The knuckles are that far off because the track needs to be tampered. Track inbedded in the road in much higher than the track not in the road.

In the early to mid 70s, my parents owned the Red Owl grocery store in Amberg. Great to see that line again. Back then it was car after car of iron ore. My dad used to go out and put out the small fires from it passing the store. Now the tall grass, it’s hard to see the tracks in places. Thanks for posting.

Superior (as in the lake 😊) rail video Jason. The full-facial interludes towards the end were a nice touch. Love the switching action and all, and personally, I prefer class C type stuff like this line. Somebody up above did make a good comment though, that pulp bolts-well I guess these are probably not in fact destined to become pulp -falling on someone at a crossing is a possibility...
Sure didn't miss smacking the signal by much.
