- If you love slabs the 50 Year Trail in Tucson AZ has got you covered. MTB riders of every skill level will have something to challenge themselves with.
This amazing trail system is located in Catalina State Park just outside of Tucson. In addition to the tech, the Chutes offer some fast flowy fun that will have you smiling from ear to ear. If you are interested in the challenging slabs be sure to hit Cowboy Slickrock, Slab City and 50 Yr Slabs. Everything had a go-around so intermediate riders can decide what challenges to focus on.
If you are interested in the custom Cowboy Slickrock T-shirt I designed click here:

Our Route:
Starting from the Golder Ranch Parking Lot we took 50 Year for 3.3 miles to The Chutes. After doing a quick loop we climbed Upper Fifty Year, Around the Mountain and Tank, to Rattlesnake. Rattlesnake lead us down to Cowboy Slickrock and Slab City before dumping us back on to Upper Fifty Year.
Around the 10 mile mark you will see an alt line for the Lion’s Back Slab. Continue down Upper Fifty Year until you reach 50-Year Slabs. This will eventually take you to Middle Gate which you will take all the way to connect back on to 50 Year (the same trail you came in on).
In total, our ride ended up being about 15 miles with 2600 ft of climbing. If want to follow the route we took, check out my Strava or Trailforks links below.

This was one of my favorite rides of all time!! Such awesome terrain. You were absolutely killing it this day too! So confident. Impressive!!!
I totally agree. I really wish more people new about it. So many folks think Sedona first, but Tucson has the goods!!!
Love the bloopers section at the end!!😂 Such a fun way to end the video.
Thanks Michelle, it's a good way to reward folks for sitting through 11 mins of me bumbling over rocks, lol.
Another epic adventure - slabs are LEGIT!
After watching you crush those slabs at Penn I know you would love these Forrest!
@@TrailSage hahah - no question!
Love them smooth slabs and single track and cacti☮️🌵
Me too, well except the cactus part, lol. Not sure why more people don't ride here, it is so much fun. Thanks for watching and commenting Bryce.
Looks like a more rocky abq footies ride. Desert riding is awesome
It sure is. Thanks for watching and commenting Mike.
This was such a fun video! Watched it as I was making breakfast! Gonna rest from all the screens now 😅 love the the shirt! It’s pretty cool! You’re so talented Sage!
You are much too kind Daniella. Please continue to monitor your health. I can't wait to see where our journeys take us!
Nice place view. Fresh and nature.
Great video.
It's a flower for You.
Thank you Jesika, that is very sweet of you.
OMG. So fantastic. So much fun over the risky rocks.
Thanks JeLan! When are we going to see more adventures from you? I miss your hiking, running and travel videos.
Wonderful sharing my friend, Big thumbs up for this 👍🏻 I enjoyed watching. Stay safe & stay connected dear. New friend here
Thank you so much for watching Delma
Amazing adventure with beatiful place...
I'm enjoyed watching your video..
Stay with continue uploads..thank you..💚💛
Thank you so much for watching!
so many sharp things all around. well done!
Thanks Ginny!
Well done chaps, what an adventure. Like 24. :D
Right on, thanks for watching!
Love your shirt! Hitting the 50 year trail! Amazing trail! You and Danny are so brave!! That view though!! Your commentary cracks me up-love it! One of the dumbest things you've done today- great job coaching yourself- you depended on your bike and just did it! I am an overthinker-which does not go well with risky endeavors! Haha! Crazy steep ride!! Congratulations on your ride! Amazing adventure! You and Danny killed it! Not 'F' word struggling- haha! Like how Danny corrected you at the end- jarring not shattering Sage! You two are hilarious!!
Thanks Kirsten, I am so blessed to have an amazing friend like Dan to share these adventures with. Biking has a lot of ups and downs (mentally) and it is great to have someone coaching you through the features. I can't believe how different this area is compared to the stuff back East.
I love the way you can keep your head, your sense of humor and wits about you as the insanity comes on faster and faster! Beautiful views as always Sage! I love this stuff - at least from the safety of my chair here! LOL!
Right on Paul, thank you! I try and do these places justice, but I always feel the GoPro does a terrible job at capturing depth, so your comment means a lot.
Nice one keep safe everyone en have a great day 🤗
Thank you for watching!
good video friend! thanks for sharing 👍 greetings
Thanks Ivan!
So great to watch. ❤️❤️❤️❤️🤩
Thank you so much Ken!
Dude, dope video! The chutes look so sick, totally something I would love to ride! Also the scenery was outstanding, I loved seeing the giant cacti in the shots. 😳 The outtakes at the end we’re great as well. Solid video, it made me want to ride there! 🤙 -Nick
Thanks Nick. I hope you and Katie get an opportunity to ride out there at some point. You both would love it.
Another amazing video Sage. What fantastic skills you have! I am delighted with the content of your channel. So good!! Thanks!
Wow, thanks Andrade. Your kind words mean a lot. Keep pushing my friend!
Great trails to ride. We have one rock dome in Texas. The strong winds are nice in the hot desert. Those trails look like a local group keeps them in great condition
Yeah, the trail advocates in the area do an awesome job with all these trails. Thanks for watching Richard.
Man, Sage you guys really made the most of your AZ trip. Really cool terrain...
There is more to come from this trip Sam. If you ever get a chance to hit AZ you won't regret it. The terrain is so different from our stuff back East.
@@TrailSage I got a taste of it at south mountain a couple years ago...but this stuff seems way different from even that riding. Can't wait to see the rest!
@@PhillyMTB I forgot you went to South Mt, my apologies. But yeah, Tucson is completely different. They have trees! lol
Looks like an awesome trail! One I would enjoy too! Showing off the bike control at 5:10 like a pro! Nice one man!
Dude you would love this place. I was proud of that move, thanks for noticing Steven.
Great work 👍 watching from Indonesia 🇮🇩
Thank you so much for watching!
Damn… was going to rest this afternoon but this got me amped up for a quick ride!
Nice place again to ride - epic stuff. The camera did a good job with the audio with that wind.
James this ride was equal parts technical and beautiful. I was seriously blown away (literally, lol) As for the GoPro mic the Windslayer did an amazing job. It was 25 mph winds the whole time with no tree cover.
Well done good work very nice video keep safe always again soon 🥰🥰
Thank you so much for watching!
Those features looked like a blast! Great vid as usual.
You and your boys would love it here. Makes those slabs at Michaux look small. Hope you are well man.
Nice riding! Moving to Tucson in Dec 2023... can't wait to mtn bike!
You're gonna love it Mike! Super jealous.
Looks awesome there, great video. I agree that paint marks are great to help navigate large slabs of slick rock for those unfamiliar with the trail.
Right on, thanks brotha!
Nice work on the edit as usual Sage... And that trail man... Really seems like a "must do" if one is pasting through the area... Really does throw a whole heap at you!
Nice work!! :D
Thanks Phil. This one was so challenging in a completely different way, I had never seen so many huge slabs, lol. Already dreaming of going back.
Bruh!! Sick trails and that shirt is sick!!
You would love this place man. Arizona has got some legit tech and sick lines. If you haven't see the Hawes video def check it out. That place had some great flow tech.
That was intense with some great views. Mic held up very well with that wind. "steep" is so hard to capture on video but I could still see how steep those drops were. You two rocked it. I would have ended up in one of those cacti.
Yeah, those little Windslayers for the GoPro work really well in the wind. I try to get off the bike as much as I can to try and capture the depth better but it is what it is. Thanks for watching and commenting Tim.
Trail looked great. I’ll get out there someday.
Def put this on your hit list Chris. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Beautiful footage! Felt like I was right there. Lion’s Back Slab looked very precarious 😅
Thank you so much Jill. This place was challenging in so many different ways.
Beautiful trails and great ride, Sage, my friend! Love the commenting, too! The bloopers are always awesome! Great Wild-Wild West Footage, dear friend!
Wild wild west sums it up pretty good Mihai. Glad you enjoyed it.
so cool
Thx Jo!
Its nice track...
Thx for watching Agung!
HI5 buddy, beautiful video dear!
Thank you so much for watching!
You and Dan are crushing it! You really do make bike touring vids look easy. Well done Sage.
Thanks Simon, I feel the same way about your running adventures.
@@TrailSage Cheers!
I can tell you were enjoying that one. Still kicking myself for not remembering where I picked up the "Run away!" phrase that I use all the time lol.
Ha, no worries Mark. I just remembered you referenced the Knights who say Ni a while back so I knew you were a Python fan.
Great video Sage, this place is amazing. Great trail and awesome riding, you have excellent skills on the bike buddy.
I love the shirt. As always, a successful adventure with wonderful shots. The bloopers at the end are always worth watching.
Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work. Ride on and have a nice week🤙
Thanks Christoph. This place had a unique set of challenges with those huge slabs. We had so much fun checking off boxes that day.
Love the adventures that you and Dan have with these rides! Well done as usual, my friend.
Thanks Todd, I appreciate the continued support brotha!
Another great video Sage! Wow, I just love how you both cycle down those dinosaur rocks and chunky paths! I can imagine there is many a time when you have to do a quick break because of the unexpected. “Don’t go that way, don't go that way!” lol! Reminds me so much of when we downhill skin and attempt new runs!
"Dinosaur Rocks" I love it! I might have to steal that one. There were so many unexpected stoppages that whole day, lol. Thanks for watching as always Gill, you are the best!
@@TrailSage haha, for sure!
You r very amazing 🌺🌺🌺🌺
stay connected 👍
Thank you for watching
Awesome video as always sage !
Thanks Roman. I enjoyed watching your latest video with your bother. You both should def take a trip out to AZ together... now that would be an epic backpacking adventure!
@@TrailSage Thanks. That would be awesome. I suck at this type of technical riding. Definitely something I could work on.
@@romantunbridge Well maybe we can coach each other because I could never get air the way you do.
@@TrailSage haha that would be awesome!
Awesome vid dude!! Really enjoyed watching this, sub 👊 really wanna ride here one day 🤞
Thanks Tyler. It's def a unique riding destination. I had a blast riding it and making the video.
I enjoyed this one, Sage. It felt like I was there with you. Is that a thing - paint marks on larger slabs?
Thanks Neil. My dad said the same thing when I showed him the video. As for the paint marks, yes. At places with big slabs and very little trees they will spray paint marks on the ground to help folks navigate around.
Love that trail! My son goes to school at Swarthmore. Are there some trails around there that are worth trying?
Hey Mike thanks. Regarding Swarthmore, yes. Next to the college there is a small trail system called Smedley that has some good riding.
Great video! I’m planning to go ride in the Tucson area this coming summer. Besides Mt. Lemmon and the 50 Year trail, which other trails do you recommend?
Thanks! Unfortunately I'm located on the east coast in Philly, so I don't know many trails in the Tucson area. I hope to get back to AZ soon though. Hope you have a great ride out there!
Nice!! Just subscribed, great riding! Let me know if you ever make it up to Minnesota :)
Thanks man. Is there good riding up in Minnesota?
@@TrailSage most definitely some diamond in the roughs. I'll share some of the more popular and challenging trails in a separate email. The cool thing is we have a huge mtb community and people are passionate!!
