I was in downtown Portland after it was officially announced. An impromptu parade started and it felt like one of those end-of-WWII parades. Very strange energy in the air. I was happy to see Trump gone, but I wasn't very excited about Biden and it felt weird having a parade for him in the middle of a pandemic. My guess is that for a lot of people in the city, Trump had been built up in their minds as a big evil villain and they were celebrating him finally being "slayed". Again, I was not of fan of his time in office, but a lot of people I talked to in Portland seemed to cherry-pick the reasons Trump won in 2016 ("his voters are all racist misogynists"), ignoring the many other reasons a large portion of the country voted for him. The country won't heal until we stop treating our political opposition as a caricatured enemy to be slayed. They are humans with hopes and fears. They can be wrong, even factually wrong, but they're not orcs being led by Sauron. As someone who now lives in a very Republican part of the country now and hears ignorant rhetoric from the other side, this advice is for EVERYONE, not just those in blue cities.
The country will never heal then. It's by design that this divide takes place. All the politicians are on the same team and all the people aren't on that team. So to get the large team to think your team really the "good guys" and "on your side" you split the large team in half and make them fight each other. Politics and government are just theater anymore. Our country was sold out before any of us were born.
Yeah, I feel like all we see are the loud minority of extremists on either side, and regular people see the other side’s extremist and thinks “yup, that’s exactly how everyone in this political group are,” when that’s simply not true. I’m a very apolitical person and don’t really mind who gets elected as long as I remain in power of my body and my privacy. I believe that presidents almost act as a distraction. Like mascots we can hate, without seeing the bigger picture. I’m pretty sure the president isn’t the only true one in power, and that there’s more to it than that behind the scenes when it comes to decision making. I just want people to have the freedom to do things as long as it doesn’t hurt anybody, and I think that’s what everyone wants, but what it means to “hurt” for some can be physical, whilst to others it includes emotional. When I say “hurt anybody,” who is anybody? To some, that includes fetuses, to others, it does not. You get what I’m saying? We all want the same thing, but have different beliefs of what that thing means and what it is on a philosophical level. And even if we did all agree on what that means, we would still argue about how that should be implemented, on what we should do if people hurt others, and a bunch of other things.

I was in downtown Portland after it was officially announced. An impromptu parade started and it felt like one of those end-of-WWII parades. Very strange energy in the air. I was happy to see Trump gone, but I wasn't very excited about Biden and it felt weird having a parade for him in the middle of a pandemic.
My guess is that for a lot of people in the city, Trump had been built up in their minds as a big evil villain and they were celebrating him finally being "slayed". Again, I was not of fan of his time in office, but a lot of people I talked to in Portland seemed to cherry-pick the reasons Trump won in 2016 ("his voters are all racist misogynists"), ignoring the many other reasons a large portion of the country voted for him.
The country won't heal until we stop treating our political opposition as a caricatured enemy to be slayed. They are humans with hopes and fears. They can be wrong, even factually wrong, but they're not orcs being led by Sauron. As someone who now lives in a very Republican part of the country now and hears ignorant rhetoric from the other side, this advice is for EVERYONE, not just those in blue cities.
The country will never heal then. It's by design that this divide takes place. All the politicians are on the same team and all the people aren't on that team. So to get the large team to think your team really the "good guys" and "on your side" you split the large team in half and make them fight each other. Politics and government are just theater anymore. Our country was sold out before any of us were born.

Yeah, I feel like all we see are the loud minority of extremists on either side, and regular people see the other side’s extremist and thinks “yup, that’s exactly how everyone in this political group are,” when that’s simply not true.
I’m a very apolitical person and don’t really mind who gets elected as long as I remain in power of my body and my privacy. I believe that presidents almost act as a distraction. Like mascots we can hate, without seeing the bigger picture. I’m pretty sure the president isn’t the only true one in power, and that there’s more to it than that behind the scenes when it comes to decision making.
I just want people to have the freedom to do things as long as it doesn’t hurt anybody, and I think that’s what everyone wants, but what it means to “hurt” for some can be physical, whilst to others it includes emotional. When I say “hurt anybody,” who is anybody?
To some, that includes fetuses, to others, it does not. You get what I’m saying? We all want the same thing, but have different beliefs of what that thing means and what it is on a philosophical level. And even if we did all agree on what that means, we would still argue about how that should be implemented, on what we should do if people hurt others, and a bunch of other things.

So far we've had the infrastructure bill, some student debt relief and the codifying of gay marriage security (to a lesser extent than some might desire but still). I have a LOT of issues with Joe Biden, but the people trying to play it off like there would be no difference between Biden and Trump, are seriously deluded, or just bad faith (or I suppose people who are outright against those things). As frustrating and milquetoast as Biden is, it is inarguably better than what Trump would have done in these respects.
I love all the comments saying ‘I bet these Biden voters are regretting it now’, as if they’re forgetting that the alternative was _Donald Trump._
We also have:
- a foreign entanglement that has been more costly than any of our wars that also might lead to nuclear armageddon
- an energy crisis globally because of said war with no inching towards compromise by this admin, in addition to rampant inflation and commodity costs becoming higher and higher.
- further divided this country through dumb bullshit mandates that did nothing but create strife for the benefit of his big pharma cronies
- led increased censorship online exposed by Musk and the Twitter files and expanded the surveillance state
- said infrastructure bill that's 95% pork spending going towards his cronies and very little of it going into actual infrastructure and public transit
