I’ve owned dogs for over 15 years. The one thing I’ve learned is take the emotion out of handling dogs.
It’s about structure and discipline for him. When you train, do it while he’s hungry and use his food as reward. Training at that young age should be no more than 30 minutes.
Keep rewarding good behavior (no biting, getting off the couch, etc). Oh and prepare for him to be clingy. Dogs are pack animals and like to be around their “packmates”.
You got this. Consistency is key and training and reinforcement is a lifetime commitment.

The best advice I can give you as a fellow pup mom is to give yourself grace. It takes time and patience to adjust to this new yet rewarding journey. My first year with my dog taught me patience and the true meaning of unconditional love. Zero regrets. So excited for you and Sage!!

The very first day I bought my puppy home she was in my arms and jumped out and fell on the brick porch… she screamed so loud and mind you she was only two pounds 😩 after that happened I knew I could handle anything… the only emotion I really felt was excitement that first day. There were two other dogs in the house and her potty was right out the front door so it was easy. For crate training, I gave up on that because I wasn’t living in an apartment, I didn’t start crate training her until she was about 4-5mths just eased it in day by day….she got use to it, gave her something that smelled like me to sleep with and she was fine. Didn’t start leash training until around that time to (preparing her to be an NYC dog) training a pup is hard work but very rewarding !

My first pup just turned 2. Here’s what helped me survive puppyhood 😁
Puppy blues are a thing. Lack of sleep was really hard and adjusting to a creature relying on you was overwhelming. I cried a lot.
A puppy pen/play pen is definitely needed. Not letting him have free reign of the house will ensure limited potty accidents in other rooms, gives you space to go to other areas of the house and will help with some of the separation anxiety. There’s some whining of course, but he’ll learn eventually that you’ll return
Puppy bites are like razor wire. Little land sharks. When he bites, redirect with a toy. Every time, grab a toy. I would even say the word “toy”…this taught my pup that toys were the only acceptable things to bite and when she got old enough and we wanted to play with her, we say “toy” and “play”and she’ll get whichever one she wanted and bring it to us to play with her.
Also, we do the bell training as well and eventually once you figure out timing of their potty and poo breaks (we tracked them), you’ll learn when he’s messing with you and just wants outside 🤣 Mine still does this and if I know she’s already gone, hasn’t eaten or drank anything, I just use the sound I make when I mean no and she understands it’s not happening.
You’re an excellent dog mom and got this! While the puppy stage is hard, soak it in because he’ll grow fast and this is only a season 💛

He got a little bigger and more alert. You have been a great mom, you are doing great with the bell training. Be consistent with his schedule and soon he will be following his schedule. The broom, vacuum and mops let him get used to seeing you using them after a while it won't bother him. Give him a big kiss from his auntie ♥️🐾🐶

You will get use to him following you around, they just love us & tend to do that as puppies. My poodle as he got older became more independent & stopped following me, unless he just in a real happy mood. On the rest, you're doing an amazing job. Keep being consistent & around him is the key to successful training. You got this! Hey Sage!

So grateful for all these videos from puppy owners.... I got a 12 week old Toy Poodle (Her name is Missy Mala) 2 weeks ago. And the puppy blues are SOOOO REAL!!!!! Im finding the potty training really stressful and frustrating and confusing and im finding it hard to keep the schedule with feeding and toilet but im really trying to give myself grace. And like you say, just take it one day a time. Getting into a schedule and finding a schedule that works is a real thing too! So amazing to hear about your potty training wins. I feel really inspired hearing that. My little girl is really good with the separation anxiety and she's really sensitised to the noise too (I carry on as normal when shes sleeping and I live in a studio flat (that's a whole other REALNESS lol). I bought her a stuffed toy/litter mate from Amazon. It has an electric heartbeat that you can switch on and a warm pack so it recreates the feeling of being in the crate with a litter mate. I was reluctant at first (it was £35 pounds about 40 dollars I think) but it had so many amazing reviews so eventually my Mum bought it for her for a welcome to the family gift and honestly its been amazing! I haven't even used the heartbeat or heatpad function but she cuddles up to it every night and every time she takes a nap. I highly recommend. And also Ive been amazed that she doesnt bite or chew it or treat it like her other stuffed toys its literally like she treats it as a littermate to cuddle up to. "Im doing my best" I hear you. Same! The last couple days Ive been so emotional and thinking I cant do it and maybe I should sell her on but after watching hours of puppy blues videos and taking her out for our first morning walk to the canal this morning, things are feeling brighter this morning... Yes, wishing you love and luck for the next stage. I feel hopeful after watching you. Thank you my dear. xxx

Congrats on your fur baby! Crate training tip: Associate the crate with good things so your pup will go in the crate and stay in the crate without welping. Put treats in the crate instead of just giving it out of your hand. Put a favorite toy inside. You can also feed in the crate. This allows them to associate good things with the crate. I got a giant schnauzer last year and this worked wonders.
Biting: Redirect to a toy. They usually grow out of the nipping phase once their adult teeth grow in, but redirecting to a toy and saying "Yes" or if you use training clickers, click. They learn quickly that this means they did the right thing. Ultimately, they want to please you and not make mommy upset or frustrated. Trust me I understand the nipping, my pup had razors as teeth and having scratches from them just came with the territory. Then I noticed he nipped less and less. Now he knows not to bite but still does occasionally in play.

For correcting behaviours in puppies you really have to be with them all the time or have them in a safe space like a crate or pen when you're not right beside them. A good technique for that is to have the dog on a leash attached to your hip. Immediately correct unwanted and reward good behaviours. Training will occur so much quicker and you can avoid developing bad habits

What worked with my pups are frozen carrots 🥕 😄 a bit messy but it helps. Its a long process. My youngest dog took 3 mth to get out of the teething stage. He was also chewing furniture, he even chewed the anti chew spray

My husband surprised me with a puppy Rottador ( Rottweiler & lab mix). It's my first time having a puppy of my own in 25 years. I am also currently almost 8 months pregnant with my first child. 😁 we want our son to grow up with a furbuddy.
Potty training is a breeze so progress is great there. He lays under our bed for comfort and so its been a test of patience constantly trying to redirect him to not do so. It's much like you taking Sage off the couch. Girlllll, I'm tieddddd. I've been doing treat reassurance when he goes to his bed instead of under ours. I know that there will be a great reward with the repetition and he is a smart puppy. Love to see y'all are building a bond with each other. Keep the Pupdates coming!

She of course had a rain jacket and doggie boots 😊 I’m sure you’ll figure out y’all’s routine. It will be trial and error, but you got this. My baby was a Velcro baby. You have done an amazing job in just a few days. I’ve had one dog for 14 years and haven’t done as much. I have had three pups in total and I cried a few days w the first one (Yorkie). A few things that worked for me….
Biting - scare them when they do it maybe a loud clap, fill a can w Pennies and shake or spray in the face w water bottle (not as bad as they sound)
Crate training- sounds like you figured it out, I was going to recommend bringing the crate upstairs for a bit outside your bedroom door somewhere he can see you. Slowly move it away as he becomes more familiar with you and his surroundings.
Furniture climbing- I basically confined my pups in the kitchen w baby gates. So no furniture, and tiled floors. Problem solved.
Music- also works for my pups. I ask google to play “dog music” or “calming music”. I keep a speaker in the kitchen w them and in their bedroom. And it pretty much stays on when I’m gone or night time. You can also play dog music on your tv from you tube.
*for my most hype pup he gets calming treats, and naps. They bath help.
    Hope this helps.

Put some coins/small rocks in a can shake when he gets on couch. Or use a spray bottle and spray him briefly while saying "down"
Don't make a big deal when leaving so there's no issue about it. Even if you're in your garage for a while.
Get a ticking clock, wrap in towel at night put in his crate so he thinks it's a heartbeat of another dog.
Get a large Kong (so he can't swallow), put peanut butter in it...freeze it so he takes a long time licking it...will keep him busy
Set up a little obstacle course in your yard, do a good walk, or ball chase closer to the evening so he sleeps at night.
Maybe spray your couch with scotch guard just in case...it's water repellent.
    Good luck momma!! 🐾💕

He is so cute! You are doing so great! I tried crate training my puppy but he ended up sleeping in the room with me. Not on the bed, we got a puppy playpen and he slept in that on the floor. I needed the sleep and the yelping was too much after a while. To this day, he sleeps on the floor in my room. He did go in the crate when I left the house and I was able to train him to go in by himself and stay until I release him. But now he’s 2 so he has free reign of the house. Still can’t keep him off the couch but he at least doesn’t try to tear up my throw pillows anymore lol. I just have to shampoo my couch once a week so it doesn’t have an odor. As far as biting, I heard that saying “ouch!” Or mimicking a yelping noise teaches them that they are hurting you and they learn to stop or else they will lose their play pal lol. That seemed to work for us. Also, lots of chew toys as a redirect.

I highly recommend pennies in a can! Rinse out any aluminum soda/drink can (make sure it's completely dry inside so it doesn't cause rust and then add pennies (loose change). The noise will stop them in their tracks. Give a good shake at him when he's biting, on your couch, or doing any other no no's. This usually works really well! Giving a strong spray of water to the nose with a spray bottle and also coming at them with crinkled paper (they hate the noise). Giving a firm NO after doing any of these will work and eventually NO is all you'll need. Definitely wanna get that biting under control though. Always give a chew toy after disciplining for biting. You're doing a super great job...keep up the great work!

You got this girl. You are the best and will be successful. I love how you love him already. I think that playpen is a good idea and the best idea for how to manage the getting on the couch situation. When he is a bit older you may want to teach him to ask to come up. This is what we did. When the dog come to the couch and you are seated there they don’t automatically jump up but pauses and wait until you say come up. My invite was to pat the couch saying come on up. This way she learns she was not permitted to do so without me.

You must develop to voices with him a voice of praise and a voice of discipline when he use it outside praise him when he do it in the house you say no and take him outside . You allow him to get use to your environment all they need is love, care , attention and discipline is all the puppy need to grow into healthy dog. Continued success , Be safe and blessed.

I just got my first puppy 4 days ago. He's 8 weeks old and let me tell you... I.FELT. THIS!!! I think I had puppy blues as well. I honestly felt like I made a HORRIBLE decision and wanted to return him immediately, lol. He's a cockapoo and he's sooo sweet but I felt really overwhelmed between potty training, making sure he's getting the right amount of exercise and stimulation, feedings is all a bit much. But he's been soo good. His potty training is going well. As you said, we've had some accidents but he does great. He crate sleeps without an issue, he'll literally walk in when he's good and damn ready to sleep lol. My puppy nips as well. I'm trying to teach him just a simple 'no' and remove my hand. He's sort of understanding but he get's sooo hyper and doesn't really care lol. We had out first bath today and he did awesome. I'm just taking it day by day and am honestly so happy with him. This baby barely barks and is just does the most with the cuddles. I do want him to get a bit more independence. He's now letting me walk around the house a little bit by myself without him following me but trust, if I'm gone long enough, he'll find me. That's something I have to get used to but we're going to ride it out. Sage is adorable. Same color as my Cinny, just missing a little bit of white fur, lol. Good luck with everything.

Congrats! Sage is a cutie. I do feel your pain about everything you're going through. My Coco is 2 years old, and she is a handful. I can't tell you the number of times I've threatened and thought of giving her back and would have, if it was not for my son. I'm still on the fence about it, because of my housing arrangements have changed and she does spend most of the day in her crate. She is crate trained also. She's a Bichon Frise', a whiner, a sweetheart and always jumping on my couch. She's still just like I have an infant, needs so much attention. It will get better, just hang in there you both will get through it.

He's so cute! He's growing fast. As a mom of two 3 and 4 lbs Yorkies, I can say you're doing a fantastic job. Just like having a baby, we go through trial and error and with each pup it will be different. I WFH too now and my babies are always with me. Training them when they were little wasn't too hard. I kept their crate in our bedroom so they wouldn't cry and as they got older we took the crate out. They do their business on pads because they're so little and we lived in an apartment. They still are on pads. You did right by putting soothing music. that's what we do when we leave them alone and we enclose them in an area where they can't wonder the whole house. We made that mistake and they peed and pooped on our area rugs. Think they were very upset at us for leaving them alone. The female pup gets angry at times and tears the pad up , But it's not always. You keep doing what you're doing and you and him will learn what works best for the both of you. I. will look forward to see more of him here an on his IG account! Thanks so much for sharing.

@@glamorouswallflower That’s fine. But as a puppy he needs to be confine to small areas so he doesn’t wonder around the house and get into things and do so his business where he isn’t supposed to. Also I forgot to mention as puppies they need chewing toys…. Lots of it because they’re teething. That’s why he bites too. He’ll lose his baby teeth so make you you save at least one tooth for memory. When he starts to bite your fingers or any or of your body slap you hands together and say NO. Give him a teething toy. If you laugh and giggle when he’s doing it , he’ll think it’s a game and continue. That’s what I did with my babies and they eventually stopped.

Omg I had all the emotions when I brought my puppy home. I slept next to the crate the first 2 nights. She's trained to use the bell and as they get older they don't need to go potty as often. So I don't take her out every time she rings the bell especially if we just came from outside... She loves snow and want to go out and play every 5 seconds.
Once they lose their puppy teeth the biting pretty much stops, he just need something to chew on, try the teething toys you can put in the freezer.

The biting can be corrected by saying, “not bite” and pushing his neck to the floor gently and redirecting him to a toy to chew because he’s probably teething. I did this for my pit bull when he was a pup and he’s wonderful with not biting (he’s now 9.5 years old). Hopefully this helps.❤ you are doing an awesome job 👏🏾!

Puppy nipping is normal , what I didn’t was get my dog a cloth muzzle so everytime she nip / bite me I put it on her for about 5-10 minutes and she got sad and just lay there. So after about 3 -5 days she associated bitting with the muzzle she hated to wear. She stopped doing it altogether. Hope this helps!

It doesn’t do them any harm they just don’t like it. So it makes them not do chewing/biting on things. It got to the point as soon as I would grab it he would stop and run lol.

The hardest thing was getting up and down the steps in my house… it was so scary.. but she didn’t sleep in my bed but her little bed was inside my bedroom. Next to my bed.. my bed is high so she could never reach. Lol enjoy the journey they are literally like kids. And they are super emotional and cool at the same time! ❤

You are going to do great....I've had dogs all my life,. I have two now, 13 staffy/rot mix and 5 year old staffy/lab mix, since they were 6 weeks. For the puppy biting, yelp high pitched, loud and short...it will startle him but also alert pain...he doesn't want to hurt you, he's playing like with his litter mates, and that's how they alert to stop. Also given that he vocalizes now...he may just be talkative....be prepared for that. lol. My youngest is very, very vocal and he whined a lot as a puppy too

    You're doing great!
Biting, they do teeth, get him some teething toys and redirect him.
Voice commands, remain consistent. On the couch: down, then you remove him, then positive talk: good boy and a treat and/or a spray bottle with water to affirm your command.
His separation anxiety at first all normal. Separated from mom and siblings.
    Enroll him in obedience classes.
You are large and in charge... he will follow you everywhere, all day, everyday. My 7.5 year old male shih-tzu is the same... he don't listen to nobody but me and will follow me anywhere I go...dog loyalty is the best!
Sending you many blessings for continued success!

Girl I wish I knew you cause I could give tips on all the thingssss lol we got a 2nd dog (our 1st dog is a little dog and she just turned 10 - shitzu mix) the new dog is a GSD/Aussie mix and huge, he was 2mos when we got him- very different from the little dog... Anyway I got a playpen for him as a puppy and when I tell you he climbed the gate like a person the first time I put him in it....p and over....we sent the crate back lol. We also did the cry out method for the crate at night and any issues with him in it overnight only lasted about a week - 2 wks at the most - he howled - like wolf at the moon howling (that was fun).....we made the crate super enjoyable during the day...treat time happened often there...he's almost 8 mos now and anytime we bring out a treat he runs and sits patiently in the crate...even when we haven't told him he needs to go there. Trust I changed my mind plenty of times cause he was taking me through the ringer lol. all in all it gets better, consistency is key, socialization is a MUST (and socializing doesn't mean he needs to interact with everyone/thing/animal etc. - he just needs to be exposed) ❤❤

My dogs are clingy and you learn to ignore it. They follow me all over the house but they also will go find one of their beds and go to sleep no longer paying me any attention. Keep an eye on his collar, adjusting it as he grows and buying a one. You should be able to stick two fingers behind it. If you can’t then it too tight. I Had a classmate that never changed the puppy collar and it embedded in his skin as he grew. The vet made her surrender the dog or get charges pressed against her. She said she got it for the kids. Kids are not responsible owners. So if they don’t remember to feed, let it out or give them water because they are kids then the dog suffers. Some people just don’t need dogs because they don’t take the time to learn about them like you’re doing. You will learn each other and it will get easier. Enjoy the puppy stage because they grow quickly Keep up the good work. ❤

My fur baby is 9 and I still have moments when I ask myself what I'm doing with a dog...lol. I haven't done bell training with my dog but it is good to have some signal for them to let you know when they want to go potty. Mine dog goes and sits patiently by the front door. Good luck with your baby!

He’ll test you & see what you’ll allow but stay strong lol. Keep an eye on him if you get the crate type playpen. My dog was about 2-3 mos & climbing right out!
