  • I review Darkwood. Darkwood is an Indie Horror Game that punches well above it's weight. So let's talk about it.

    Great review, very well summarized. I have been a fan of darkwood since 2019 or so, the first time i played it i quit fairly quickly just because of how scary it was. Later, i finished the game last year, and it truly is a masterpiece, although i don't see the similarities between it and stalker.
    You can see that this game was carefully crafted to be an extremely good horror, starting with the aesthetic; dark, gritty, filthy. The diffulty is too challenging sometimes, even the console version, but even with that, the game is still very good. The music, which is ambient, adds a lot to the gameplay, for example the track that plays in the morning is absolutely fantastic, it's stress relieving and comforting, yet it reminds you of the horror that awaits outside of your hideout. The crafting mechanic is also great, the limited space really makes you question what item is more important, makes you think of the consequences the decision might make, sometimes a single item can decide whether you survive the night or not. The characters are also great, The Trader, Wolfman, and others are very memorable. The mysteries within the game leave you wondering even after you finish it. The limited vision is also a fantastic mechanic, always makes you look behind, wondering where the next threat might come from, you're always kept on your toes. The plot of this game is fantastic, the amount of mysteries and unanswered questions it has, it just makes you come up with theories, but those theories end up with even more questions
    Darkwood is a hidden gem, it shines in the sea of recent bland horrors. It's certainly one of the best horror games out there.

      I think the comparisons to stalker are mostly about it's tone and setting. Some mechanics are similar but they're very different games. But I would recommend stalker to a fan of darkwood, and darkwood to a stalker fan

      @@ConversingGames Ah i see, stalker is very good in its own regard, my comment wasn't a comparison between the two games, i was just commenting on how good darkwood is. The stalker part was just an afterthought i decided add, lol. Regardless, your review is very good!

    One of my favorite memories of this game is dragging a shelf across the map to my base, using another one that was already there and shoving them into a crack in my wall in such a way to wear normal creatures couldn’t push it. It held up for many nights. Then some magic BS pushed it

    I've known about this game for years and really wanted to play it but due to a lack of a working PC, and living in a household where games aren't really tolerated, I never had the chance. This year I finally got a computer that could run smaller games like these and finally got it. I always kept hearing how good this game was, watched endless reviews and I never truly got it until I played it. I've played some really good horror games before I picked up darkwood, like really big titles like silent hill, amnesia, alien isolation and so on. But when I say that darkwood scared me shitless I really mean it. Never been scared of a game before in my life and there I was in my hideout at night, blood pressure though the roof and a heartbeat higher than when I was in genuinely dangerous real life situations.
    I love it to bits and I can't overstate how good this game really is. Amazing review for an amazing game ♥️

      Really glad to hear you liked the game! I agree that Darkwood is a uniquely scary game. Alien Isolation did nothing for me but somehow this little indie game did. Good luck with your PC gaming adventure!

    I honestly can't think of a game with better sound design than this. Playing this game alone at night in a dark room with the windows slightly open while the creaks and night sounds intermingle is an experience like no other.

    I've been reading the reviews saying "Its such an awesome horror game" and "its one of a kind and doesn't rely on jumpscares" but seeing the gameplay just looks like Zelda for Super Nintendo

    • @ConversingGames

      Is that solely because it's a top down perspective with a focus on melee combat?

    • @cowel8734

      @Conversing Games That and the lack of realism. You can have the scariest horror movie, but if the characters look like funko pop figures, it sort of takes away from the horror. Im sure its fun

    • @ConversingGames
      @ConversingGames  Год назад +2

      @@cowel8734 That's a fair criticism. I would argue the lack of realism is what makes the game more 'creepy' than it is scary. But to each their own.

      @Conversing Games Its just a quick assessment. Even games I loved, I hated at first like Witcher3 which I thought was lame until 8 hours in and now Ive completed it all 3 times lol

    • @JewTube001
      @JewTube001 Год назад +3

      @@cowel8734 it's not meant to be realistic. the surrealism is more spooky but you're probably after a different type of horror. none of the characters look like funkos, they're roughly fable inspired.

      I highly recommend it. It's an incredible experience. If you aren't one for survival horror or abstract narratives; you might not like it, but I would still give it a go. Most storefronts (xbox, playstation, steam, etc) have some form of refund policy you could use if you really don't like it
