This is why i LOVE having a homie with a shop. I try to utilize trades whenever I can. Trading in a stellar crown BB for a surging sparks BB plus 40 bucks cash, in person, is so much better than trying to sell it, lose on fees and shipping, then lose again when paying taxes. Use trades as much as you can!
The tricky thing is understanding at what point you go from investor to collector. If you never sell to realize gains, you are a collector who has convinced yourself that you're an investor.
Well just like any investment strategy, you should have blue chip items, and others that you're fluid on. I tend not to focus on what I have had in the past and worry only about what I currently own and it's present value. Otherwise, you end up just collecting and sitting on everything.
All of this is super useful information. The only caveat I’d add is; if you’re buying in “large” quantities, or if you’re over invested into a singular set, it may make sense to sell at a 2x rather than hold. Spot on info :)
Lmao 🤣 I am too lazy to sell for a 2x I can hold the boxes for years until i see atleast 5-6x. The amount of work you put listing the product dealing with annoying buyers. Shippping it is not worth it for a 2x but I am very lazy
I appreciate this topic! One of the things I struggle with the most in this space is whether to hold product or sell and snowball profits. I don't think there is a perfect answer but I do appreciate you tackling it.
I think there are three strategies only investment hold it forever maximize return one day, collector, Just keep your collection never sell it probably pass it down reseller by low sell high maximize margin.
There is a secret with tcgplayer fees that I feel like no one knows about. Either you don't know it or you are keeping it on the DL too :). Either way great video you are the man Alex
Even with an amazing LGS behind us, mentoring us and providing product at discounted prices, we still have to sell smartly. People really dont think of the fees, and ultimately lose so much money moving product too early. Gas money, shipping materials and fees, platform fees, etc.. it's brutal.
Honest question here, would you then suggest that it is better to sell only when you are ready to get rid of your collection? For the most part i collect/invest for long term hold (15 to 20 years) but recently ive been buying extra sealed products with the intention to reduce my cost basis, is that not a good idea? Thanks for your great insights as always!
This is great! I’ve seen many investors suggest growing outside income is the way to grow your portfolio best. I don’t have much cash to turnaround, so selling funds my next deal, but only when the current price and fees is worth the sale. Thanks, Alex!
I would love to hear you speculate about the 1-3 mega Pokémon sets that will come with Pokémon ZA. Or what you expect to see for year four of scarlet and violet since we havnt experience this type of thing for a very long time.
Man you make such great content that people need to hear. Thank you for keeping us entertained while making me some great gains in 2024 while my real estate holdings broke even if I’m lucky.
Then a lot of us in the US will get hit with 28% long term capital gains tax on profits if we sell items we held for over a year? I'll admit I get confused on this, and there seems to be both good and misleading info out there. In a nutshell navigating 1099k reporting, tax advantages of short vs. long term holds, business vs. hobby status, etc. Using rough numbers: I bought FS booster box for $150 from Pokemon Center on 01/14/24. If I sell it next year after 01/14/25 for $300, then I profited $150 which means $40 in taxes. Maybe $45 in selling fees, and $20 for shipping. So I'm left with $300 - $40 - $45 - $20 = $195. I still make money ($45) but doesn't feel worth it for the effort. If I wait until FS hits $1000 then I net about $440 in profit. Another example may be my ES booster, my total cost is $480, It's worth roughly double. But man taxes, fees, shipping are going to eat up a big chunk of the gains.
It's a little trickier than slapping the 28% IRS collectibles long term cap gain tax rate, especially if you have a legal entity you're selling these things under. Income derived from your business purpose (pokemon cards for example) would technically be considered ordinary in nature, thus subjecting you to ordinary tax rates. For some, that's an advantage as the ordinary rate is less than 28% for most households. If you have some semblance of records (tracking inventory, basis, fair market value on items) and keeping tabs on expenses in excel/google sheets, you can easily make the argument that your "hobby" is a business. There are more nuances to that determination, but in a nutshell it's a lot of navigating the tax code and applying what fits to your situation.
I would sell in person and not pay taxes. Rich people barely pay taxes, that’s one of the reasons they’re rich in the first place, we shouldn’t feel bad about it, they won’t even cover your pokemon cards in the event of a fire so I sure as hell am not paying taxes unless I have to. Paying taxes has gotten us nowhere Hell even Alex says he has a sales tax certificate to avoid paying taxes, I’m not going to jump through hoops like an animal to avoid paying something every business doesn’t pay. I don’t feel bad, the government doesn’t give out financial support when you need it anyway so what’s the point of paying the tax 🤷♂️
I thought id never sell and just stack up millions. Then money ran out lol. I find such good deals that im flipping pokemon now cause i need more money to keep buying.
The struggle I have is moving one booster box or a low quantity item in my "inventory" to a sealed case of a booster box or PC ETB's. What are your thoughts?
Just got 5 different etbs i didnt have yet from s&v for $40 each. At this point, that's a deal with these etbs jumping up to $60, $80 within a few months
Selling over $600 on the secondary market, No one is exempt from either having a taxable identification number/and or having a secondhand dealers licence correct? Capital gains taxation to be taken into account? Do all these sellers keep physical proof of said buying and selling of pokemon product on the secondary market as proof for irs collections? 😅
This is a possible in person sales will net you a higher return but it does come with some problems. If you’re still planning to pay longterm capital gains it’s easier but if you’re wanting to keep as much as possible you will be limited by people who are willing to pay in cash. I don’t know how big of a position you have but selling on fb marketplace locally will also help it will take you awhile to move most things but if you don’t need the money immediately it will net you the most profit.
Hey Alex! Great content. Wondering if you could touch on something...obviously you do a lot of box breaks/rip and ships with recent sets. Do you consider the investment side of your holdings vs. that side of your business as two separate operations/mindsets, since you're saying here that you wouldn't sell sets that have those quick immediate gains? Hoping this makes sense. Obviously I understand there is value to doing the rip and ships beyond just the sale price of the packs --- building the community, video views etc.

Alex, you think you could make a video explaining the resellers permit, how to get it, how to actually use it etc, think it’d be helpful to people

Selling all of my Terestal Featival. Can practically double my money already and it’s definitely getting reprinted.
smart! im thinking of selling mine as well and buying it back once it goes down. It will get reprinted many times anyway. It's just a game of patience
Sounds an awful lot like what people said about ES, and we know how that went lol

My mindset since X/Y era just be ready to hold off on selling for the 10 year window but I certainly had my doubts But NOW is my time!
