    Bravo Zulu (Well Done). UNREPs are a whole 'nother pucker when you are the OOD and have the conn. The gas turbine ships have it easier with controllable reversible pitch propellers. I started on a 1200 lb. steam frigate. For keeping station alongside we would order speed changes in 1 or 2 RPM increments. I was JOOD when we were practicing a high-line personnel transfer with Deutsche Marine (German Navy) ship Lütjens when a freighter Iron Mikes its way across our path. The Germans were set to break away but the COs said "No" and took the conn. They turned the two ships together about 40 degrees without parting a line and did it at 15 knots. Now THAT's ship handling.

    I was on the JFK in ‘91 in the Red Sea. We’ve done it all… even unrep’d small boys ourselves or three and FOUR wide doing UNREP and VERTREP. Had actual emergency breakaways, sometimes in seas so high we could see the screws of our shadow Ticonderoga.
    When we arrived at Norfolk to board the JFK, they were vert-rep’ing in port because we were loaded for a winter cruise and they had to transfer everything from the Lincoln over to us for a summer cruise because we got called up to head to Desert Shield/Storm.
    We got out there just after the Saratoga blew the bridge off that Turkish Destroyer.
    I was in VA-72, one of the last two A-7E squadrons in the Navy. Modeled in the game which I was so happy to see.
    They added the America… but I wish the Kennedy was included!!!
    Oh and our breakaway song/pulling in/deploying song was “Big Bad John”.

    My uncle was in the RAN in the 60s. He was in the gunnery crew on HMAS Vendetta. He sometimes fired the line over to resupply ships. The RAN line thrower fires a steel rod with a plastic buffer on the head, towing the rope. He found it more accurate to take the plastic head off, at least until he landed it in the resupply ship's hull like a harpoon. He was no longer allowed to use the line thrower.

    TinCan Bosun here. Served on a number of different ships/types during my career, but some of my favorite memories were “flying” UNREP rigs on either of the Spruance class Destroyers I served aboard. The LM2500 gas turbine main engines were thirsty and Atlantic Fleet requirements were to maintain 70% fuel levels so we could surge/dash as far as the Mediterranean without the need to refuel in the event of a major European conflict. Because of the these things we had to UNREP every 3rd or 4th day at sea operating, and I absolutely LOVED doing replenishment at sea. The NWP-14 is the Bible for the entire event. I’m not sure what the book is called these days, but I’m sure it’s available online if you do a G search for it. Thanks for bringing up the great memories !!!

    When I was on the Vinson in 05 we did one of the last UNREPs with USS Camden before they decommed her. I always liked going out on the catwalk when we were about to break away with her because "The Proud Pachyderm" would start blasting music on the 6MC and a guy in an elephant suit would dance on the bridge wing as we turned away. Those AOE ships were very impressive.

    Love this stuff. I've been a plumber for a little over twenty years, and now that my kid is close to graduating high school, I will be going to sea. Currently, I'm researching the pros and cons between SIU and MSC. Working on the ships that supply the US Navy would be interesting, and I would experience what you are trying to show in the video.

      MSC is going through some internal soul searching at the moment. I would highly recommend a "wait and see" if you are interested in working with them. MCS sea / shore rotation is very heavy on the "sea" side of things. Their manning is low for a reason, which they need to rectify. There are other mariner companies and jobs worth looking into.

    • @peted2770
      @peted2770 4 часа назад

      @@jeffreylatham6448 I have heard rumblings that MSC isn't the greatest gig but can get you your sea time. Union contracts appear harder to pick up with no/little sea time under your belt. SIU seems heavy-handed with Piney Point, but riding out 4-7 months of zero income is a huge problem for most people. I'm sure somewhere, there is a happy compromise to be found. I still have a couple short years left before my next life adventure.

    I have had the Fuel probe spray treatment during my time on the fuel line as well. For a significant amount of my time at sea CE Division was responsible for the P&D Line (Phone and Distance) which had distance flags to show the separation between the ships as well as a sound powered telephone line for the two ships to talk. That was a bit of a pain in the ass since you had to be on the line the whole time and constantly be paying out and taking in line as the ships moved apart and back in. Only had one unrep cancelled due to safety and that was off the Coast of San Diego, waves were coming up over the foc'sle and knocking us all on our asses. We also had one interrupted in the gulf by a dhow that wouldn't get out of the way.

    • @ryu1940
      @ryu1940  Час назад +1

      Oh yeah the P&D line was the worst, I always hated being on that one because it is just like you say you’re constantly moving the line in and out. That was exhausting by the time it was over.

    The Sacramento Class are pretty interesting (and really huge) ships. At 54k tons fully loaded, the lead ship can apparently move at 30 knots. I'm honestly curious if these ships should also be used as missile sponges. They essentially have the air defense capabilities of a Spruance.
    Also, when underway replenishment becomes a thing in the campaign, I can already imagine:
    -Literally every other ship in the fleet: "We've been sprinting for the better part of a 48 hours, we need to refuel."
    -CVNs & CGNs: "You guys have to refuel already?"

    • @ryu1940
      @ryu1940  12 часов назад +3

      haha yeah the carriers and other nuke ships will have a blast just constantly steaming around though they should require food and parts every so often I wonder if the game will
      model that?
      The UNREP ships are the lifeline of the fleet and an integral part for a fleet to stay at sea so it’s one of the things that should be defended as a high value unit and not be a missile sponge ideally.

    • @adamtruong1759
      @adamtruong1759 11 часов назад +1

      @@ryu1940 I can see it, still wouldn't change the fact that the nuke ships wouldn't have to replenish nearly as much as the other ships in the fleet.

    • @ryu1940
      @ryu1940  11 часов назад +1

      @adamtruong1759 It does depend because generally larger crewed nuclear vessels will have more mouths to feed so it might balance out

    • @adamtruong1759
      @adamtruong1759 10 часов назад

      @@ryu1940 Potentially, I came into assuming each sailor each gets the same amount of rations, and unfortunately the USN never brought nuclear powered aircraft in service so Avgas is still a slight issue.

    • @scullystie4389
      @scullystie4389 6 часов назад +2

      I was an airdale in a Hornet squadron during GWOT, the carrier would UNREP fairly often because we went through a lot of food and jet fuel. The nuclear aspect of the aircraft carrier means it can steam very fast for long periods of time, but it's still got a finite volume of consumables and if there's no gas it's not very useful.
      Honestly if a missile took out our resupply ship we'd be screwed. It would never be made a sponge unless it was empty and times were desperate. Especially in the modern era where there's a very limited number of UNREP capable vessels and they're spread thin globally.

      @ryu1940 years ago, we had the capability of transferring Talis, Terrier. Tartar, and Standard missiles at sea (pre-VLS). The Navy really screwed the pooch waiting 40+ years to figure out they needed to do this with VLS.

      @@ryu1940 The resources aren't provided for in the game for the fine ship handling that would be required to do this manually. It would also take significant effort to program this in for a capability few would use more than once.
      I think that "In Game" it would have to be automated and simply take a period of time during which the ships would be unavailable for commands other than maybe an emergency breakaway. This would apply for both UNREP and VERTREP.
