When there are many forks of lightning as in this strike (1:15) does it mean there are more dust particles or metalic particulates in the air for the current to jump? and vice versa when only one fork, the air is fairly clean?

+Geoff Shaw In positive cloud to ground lightning there is only the single lightning bolt i.e no forks. When negative cloud to ground lighting occurs forking takes place. Whether the amount of forking depends on dust and so on I dont know.

Very interesting, thank you, is this difference due to the negative charge in the atom being around the surface so to speak, i.e. the electron, thus allowing more divergent paths for the charge of the lightning bolt?

    To put it simply...
Lightning is just a gigantic form of that tiny spark of static electricity you feel when you get shocked.

If you look at Blitzortung, you have Tim Sameras from Stormchasers TV program talking about how lightning is formed. that is very informative plus it gives a good very slow motion of recoil streamers and what is happening. youtube[dot]com[slash]user[slash]Blitzortung
But this is a good video form the Met about lightning. Can you do more about lightning, how it affects aircraft and stuff like that. Could be something interesting as well as normal weather.

They create a charge, positive or negative, by just creating friction with each other. Once millions and millions of charges are made, the charged region becomes larger, once large enough, releases the charge, and lightning is made.
