“The Sea Plant Tune” is a kind of ethnic folk song from Yunnan province, southwest of China, it is named from a kind of herbal aquatic plant known as "haicai" in the Yilong lake. It has thousands of years’ history, and it was created by Yi labours in their working and living, and developed by young men and women’s singing whilst courting in the mountains, fields, and lakes. In 2006, the Sea Plant Tune was approved to be included in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage list by the state council of China.
Lyrics translation:
“Up, up, what is the bird flying in the sky?
It’s the silver luck bird flying so high,
Where will it land?
It will land on the silver mountain.
Up, up, what is the bird flying in the sky?
It’s the golden fortune bird flying so high,
Where will it land?
It will land on the golden mountain in Beijing.”
Mandy Chan Ensemble is an international band based in Rotterdam, formed by Chinese vocalist, arranger and composer Mandy Chan. The ensemble focuses on creating crossover music between the east and the west.
Mandy’s love of traditional Chinese folk song and poetry, influences of western jazz, Latin and pop music would be heard in her transnational, trans-cultural compositions and arrangements.
