    A few years ago at Origins (Columbus, OH), Perkins was giving a talk, and it was right after Mordenkainen's came out. He was giving all these details on Giff, Gith, and more Illithid info, and I just yelled, "Quit teasing us and just give us Spelljammer!" He smiled and said, "Believe me! I'm doing what I can! I ran a Spelljammer campaign for years!"

      @@AuntieHauntieGames Yup! He ran a 5+ year long game on Spelljammer. The reason why I think they haven't is because Spelljammer in 2e is so heavy on crunchy math while 5e is streamlined. Streamlining Spelljammer comes at the risk of pissing off hardcore fans.

    Mystara had two boxed sets that came out for AD&D; Karameikos: Kingdom of Adventure(1994) and Red Steel(1994). The Champions of Mystara(1993), one of the last BECMI boxed sets, included flying ships that were very similar to the Spelljammer ships and they also included stories that would fit perfectly in a Spelljammer campaign.

    Oh, you got a bunch of bonus items in your Legend of Spelljammer box set! The DM screen was a standalone product, that map of the Rock of Bral, the poster of the various ships, and the poster with planetary orbits didn't come with that set, they came with the original Spelljammer campaign setting box set, and so did a bunch of those ship cards (I think a couple of them came in the Legend of Spelljammer box, but most didn't), so you got some really nice extras in there.

    • @AuntieHauntieGames
      @AuntieHauntieGames 3 года назад +1

      I dunno. I dooo think this is the direction that Wizards will go, since a desire to consolidate the two settings into one transitive setting has been present since 3rd Edition, but I would rather see Spelljammer remain rooted to the Material Plane and Planescape rooted to the Inner and Outer Planes. It allows for a nice symmetry.
      Although there HAVE been planar spelljammers since 2nd Edition, ala the Voidjammers of the Astral Plane, so it would not be without precedent in the TSR era.

    How are you handling 5e Clerics and Paladins in Spelljammer? In one of your earlier videos, you mentioned that they are disconnected from their deity while being away from their origin sphere. 5e isn't as linked to deities as AD&D was. Are you still cutting them off from refreshing spell slots? Or, something else?

    • @sharkforce8147
      @sharkforce8147 3 года назад

      this was often a rather overblown problem.
      first off, in 2nd edition, all 1st and 2nd level spells came from the priest, not the deity, so those could be recovered anywhere no matter what.
      secondly, there was a spell you could cast in just about any sphere that would connect you to your deity. it lasts a week, and has no expensive components, and is a 2nd level spell so you can take it even if you don't have your connection to your deity.
      thirdly, the setting introduced a variety of options for clerics to worship deities or religions that would be present in just about any sphere. celestian, for example, is a greyhawk deity, but is also the god of wildspace and can be found anywhere. ptah from the mulhorandi pantheon of the forgotten realms is also big in space (and mostly claims that he's the one who created it all, which can of course annoy other priests). if you follow a racial pantheon, such as the seldarine (elves) or morndinsamman (dwarves), your deity would exist in most spheres. you could also follow a polyglot reigion, which basically took a whole bunch of deities, lumped them together, and if any one of them was worshipped in the sphere you were covered (so for example, if you worship the norse pantheon you'd be covered in realmspace because tyr is worshipped there). then there was a shou system of beliefs that all gods were part of their pantheon in some way or other, and the shou were present in many spheres in wildspace too. then if that somehow still didn't cover you, it was possible for a friendly or allied deity to grant your priest spells even if your deity wasn't present in a sphere (thus saving you the horrible burden of a single level 2 spell once per week, the horror of it all! /sarcasm). and the requirements for your deity to be considered worshipped in a sphere? a community of 100 people has to worship them in that sphere for a period of 1 year. not exactly stringent.
      that left the phlogiston, which first off was mostly a place you travelled through than did much in, and even there you could get around the restrictions by buying basically a small shrine that you could charge up with your deity's power while you are in a sphere that is connected (and yes, it was expensive... except that buying a helm was 10 times as expensive, so if you can afford to get *into* wildspace, you can potentially afford one of these).
      so, I imagine you'd handle it largely the same way 2nd edition handled it. it isn't a big deal. apart from the period of time when you're in the phlogiston, where you likely won't have a lot of encounters, it is basically not a real problem, just a tiny complication that gets vastly overblown by people who read one line into that section of the rules and decided the remaining several paragraphs must not be important at all.

    Just a note for those wanting to play Spelljammer - Any party going to space usually starts amassing a lot of gold. So any GM will have to take that into account. It may upset any campaign that returns to terrestrial setting when the players have a huge amount of gold from selling ships they've captured and helms that they've acquired. As well as the overwhelming advantage of having a ship that can bombard cities and armies with really no way to counter.

    Coming back to this video a little over a year after first watching this and I just had a thought. If WotC is in fact making a new Spelljammer book with the races from that Multiverse UA, I could see them retconning the asteroids of the Astromundi Cluster as being the remnants of the First World. It could of course be a hair-brained idea, but that feels like the sort of thing they’d want to do with this whole multiverse they want to connect together.

    If you do ever get the DND book club off the ground, may I recommend the “Blade of the Flame” trilogy for Ebberon?
    It’s not very long or complex, but it’s a great intro to the setting, introducing the themes of the setting (religious diversity and ambiguity, blurring the alignments, and setting elements like the Dragonshards and dragonmarks) without being as confusing as dropping the readers into Sharon might be. It was also just a fun trilogy with likeable characters.

(the ship cards, or at least *some* of them, might have been from the legend of the spelljammer boxed set).
    edit: oh, and uhh.... 3.x D&D did actually have spelljammer. sort of. one issue of polyhedron magazine was a somewhat revised spelljammer campaign. it was definitely not quite the same setting as spelljammer from the 2e books, but it was still quite definitely spelljammer. it had some new ship designs in it, complete with cutouts, as I recall.

    An often-overlooked Spelljammer adventure is "Dawn of the Overmind", which came out six years after the official cancellation of Spelljammer. It's the third part of a mind flayer trilogy, begun with "A Darkness Gathering" and "Masters of Eternal Night". they do have miniature ones though (made famous by minsc from the baldur's gate games). in fact, they have a lot of varieties of giant space hamsters. the gnomes experiment a lot. so, there are carnivours, flying, fire-breathing giant space hamsters for example.

      So rather than it being a Forgotten Realms (or Greyhawk or where ever) game that has some Spelljammer thrown in, I just need to make is a Spelljammer game through and through. That way players can easily start at 1st level.

      @@andrewshandle iirc, that was one of the aspects of the Astromundi Cluster. They lacked any real planets, so everyone lived on asteroids. And thus everyone was at least familiar with spelljamming.

      @@lightningcat82 So I have been thinking about this a bit since I posted. Based on popular culture, D&D is super easy for people to get into. Sure, they might not understand what certain monsters are that are pretty D&D specific, but Goblins, Orcs, Giants, Devils, Demons, wild animals, etc. all are something even non-players would be familiar with. Same with how heroes interact with those in adventuring parties, and even the classes they play due to fantasy literature, movies and video games.
      So if I create a game in the FR's setting and drop a bunch of players who like D&D but aren't really into the lore or anythig in LMoP, they can easily jump right in.
      Spelljammer is this entire other thing added on top, even though it's still high fantasy we now have this sci-fi element that might be really inaccessible to new players. And I also think that SJ on it's surface, at an initial view looks really, really stupid to some players (I know I felt this way when I was a kid and it was released), and until you get into more of the details a lot of people might not realize that it's pretty fantastic (going on personal experience of course, but also this is how quite a few people I know think about it). I honestly think for me it was seeing that famous poster of the Nautaloid Ship in front of a planet a few years later and was like "You know what, I'm going to give that a second look". (EDIT: Found the image, link below)
      I guess my point is that I feel there is this barrier to entry for Spelljammer that doesn't exist in any other from of D&D, and finding a way to solve that problem for non-veteran players of the game who already know what it is might be touch difficult.
      I also accept that this might entirely be me and my own thinking and it's not really a problem. ;)

    Sorry if I missed it in an earlier video, but which books would you recommend for someone who's never played spelljammer to get? Obviously the main book and setting, but which modules would be easiest to port into 5e? Do you expect spelljammer or something similar to be made for 5e?

      Start with the box set, read it and see if you like it. If you do then you have options. If you want to create your own Crystal Sphere then "Practical Planetology." If you want to explore a pre-created world then buy that specific one, Realmspace, Krynnspace, or Astromundi Cluster.

    The Spelljammer novels are a fun story. I really wanted the main character's magical cloak.

      @heathharris2545 3 года назад

      @Jeo Fickles it allowed him to shape change into any creature he had seen. As he got better with the cloak he could shape change specific parts. He turned his hands into umber hulk claws once, for instance. Also it had another ability but it's kind of a big plot reveal.

      I mean, that's a problem if you were planning to take your creation and use that image in a comic book or something, but for the vast majority of users this really doesn't matter even the tiniest bit. and frankly, it's all made *from* stuff that they own, so yes... they own it. why wouldn't they?

    The Spelljammer comic isn't worth reading. It starts off with some neat ideas but quickly devolves into inconsistent characterization and different writers yanking the book in different directions.
