      He already has a plan. He could not have thought that Havatz would become available, but the second Chelsea said they were looking to sell, Arteta was in like a shot. Fabio viera was supposed to be that player, but if xaka was better option then we know he had an eye open. Havartz fits perfectly, doesn't even have to move house. Rice will allow both odergaurd and havartz to be number 8s, with the inverted lb and rb, saliba and timber/Gabriel have the athletic ability to play high as a 2-2-5-1 in attack.... tasty. 😊

    Arteta may be developing a more positionless approach to football - one of the things that allowed Arsenal to still score when teams started man-marking and double-teaming Saka and Nelli was the switching and moving around. Obviously there'll still be specialisation, but signing attackers like Trossard and Kai is a clear signal that a much more fluid approach is in the works

    • @KavalierII
      @KavalierII Год назад +5

      Yeh been reading about this a bit…it’s the next step of positional football. Think it was either Newcastle or a West Ham player who said that they had no idea how to play against us…they were just being pulled around and didn’t know how to respond. Basically the complete version of the Dutch’s total football system. Positional-Positionless-Football: Pepe alluded to this in his recent interview that the intelligence needed to play in Arteta’s system is ridiculous…the first goal against Everton at home last season was a hint of this…

    • @nicklikethesoup
      @nicklikethesoup Год назад +3

      @@KavalierII It also explains why it takes players about a year to adapt. Not only do they have to get the fitness levels right, but it takes them time to build up the understanding and fluidity. The fastest adapters to the system have been Jorginho & Troussard, 2 players often referred to as highly intelligent and 2 players exceedingly familiar with this fluid style.
      It also would explain why Arteta is quick to drop a player who isn't adapting, like Auba & Oezil. Auba simply didn't seem to understand the system & what was being asked of him. Oezil though understood, but seemed to not meet the physical demands. Which is why when you hear things like Arteta has been tracking a player for years (like Jorginho & Rice), you have to think, it's because he's looking for signs of intelligent reading of the game, physical ability to keep up with the demands, and personality. To me, it explains every recruitment choice he seems to make. There are others where you know it was a recommendation that he went with (Tavares & Sambi), but it's not working out because there are developmental issues. It's why I think he also brings in the youth team players for training even though they never play. It's all about setting that initial bar/stage for them while assessing. Constantly assessing.

    Havertz is a Raumdeuter just like Thomas Müller. He will probably float around quite a bit.

    • @nicklikethesoup
      @nicklikethesoup Год назад +5

      This. I've been saying this is why he was good at Leverkuesen and failed at Chelsea. His best attribute is what makes Thomas Mueller elite. Havertz just has the technique the Mueller seems to lack. Mueller also has this, do whatever it takes no matter how ugly and is the radio commanding the team and I'm not sure Havertz has adopted that ability yet. Chelsea didn't really allow him to direct play or traffic. Odegaard was seen doing it last season, but he's a bit less communicative at times and you could see he and Saka weren't on the same page when he really got clever. This affords Havertz the opportunity to step up and be the commanding voice and then switch it off or use that as a dummy for Odegaard. But he's gotta develop that skill this first season. Bayern used Mueller out wide and up top a bit to mixed success, but I think if Havertz watched the tape, he could figure out why it didn't work when it failed and fix those errors to be an option up top as well.
      I just don't see him being the heading option in the box as the reason we bought him. It's his ability to read and find space. Especially since he favors the right, you can tell that's where he's finding it, which makes sense since defenders cheat to their stronger foot which tends to be the right.

    @antonbruckner768 Год назад +9

    Arteta saw last season that teams were shifting across and pressing Saka/Odergaard and leaving space on the left. That is why even Xhaka was getting plenty of goal-scoring opportunities. Arteta thinks that, with that sort of space on the left, Havertz will be devastating (and take pressure off Saka). Big problem with Havertz moving too far out onto the wing is that Arteta wants to use his heading ability (wont' get that from Martinelli/Saka playing more centrally) so that may not be a big feature of his play

Honestly it wouldn't surprise me if Arteta comes up with some wild plan out of nowhere and creates a new position for him. In your scenario, Timber could move up to DM thereby playing 2 CBs and 3 pivots when attacking low blocks, with Timber being the more disciplined DM. Either Rice or Caicedo would be allowed to be more adventurous to help overload the attack. -Strength to hold up the ball
    -Pace to run in behind
    -First touch to kill long balls
    -Technique to link up play

I actually disagree in the sense that Odegaard will not score as many, I think he'll score even more. From what I've seen last season, when we hold the width, it doesn't even have to be --- always Saka or --- always Odegaard. In the wide triangles, the movement shifts depending on the phase of play and opposition between the 8, the wide player, and the fullback, so don't be surprised if you see the players more around like fidget spinners in those wide triangles. Since the signing of Kai who, who needs to prove his worth of 65m... If he was from other leagues I would not mind. But he is from Chelsea and Chelsea ruined our transfer Target in Jan. So paying them so much for a player not even in form is ridiculous... Look at the other two signing they are brilliant I'm proud of Arsenal. But Kai is excellent off the ball, but if he can't finish then what's the point getting into scoring position.. got me ? Again you truly believe Alex that this guy is the third highest transfer for Arsenal ? I mean Pepe was better by miles when we signed him... It's just opinion. I don't agree 65m is the right worth and again to Chelsea.

    That 21km run. What is that? That's not an average per 90 mins is it? That's huge. If he really did cover the 2nd highest amount of ground in the PL last year then that's the best stat of all. He'll bring so much more energy than Xhaka.
    Edit: I have no idea what that stat was but he averages about 10-11km per game. He was the highest for Chelsea but we'll outside the top 10 in the PL. Interestingly Rice and Odegaard are in the top 10.

      That's the thing when people say Odegaard ghost's games that's bs!
      Yes he might not always shine forward but most of the time he does.
      But he shines defensive and he stear the whole front press and he runs alot! And he has become very good defensively. He wins back alot of balls by intercepts or by tackle's. Also he make sure other players intercepts cause he reads the game so we'll cause he is extremely football smart.
      That's also why he often is replaced at the end cause he works so hard and I believe he becomes mentally tired cause his brain is on fire from start to he walks of the pitch. It can't be described how important he is to Arsenal. And he love's Arsenal himself.
      I believe unless the club go backwards alot he will stay in Arsenal out his career unless Arteta would move to Barca or something I believe the first player he would demand the club to buy nomatter the price is Odegaard to implement his system.

    I truly enjoyed your technical analysis, more then anything, to me these signings are more to with youthful energy and dynamism. If you have ever watched Haverts and Rice play, they play with the same energy Saka, Odegaard and Martinelli. I think Arteta has discovered a style that best suits his players strengths and his recruits best complement what he already has. For now, yes, he may have an idea of what he wants to see, but more than anything he knows he will be surprised at what he will witness are the time goes. He knows that he needs to put faith in these young men, and they will more than replay him. Much like Wenger put his faith in young Fabregas, Nasri, Wilshere etc…. That is the Arsenal way.

    The name of the game for Arsenal this year is symmetry. We inverted on the left last year and attacked creatively through the right. Havertz and Timber will bring the ability to do that on the other side of the field, and Rice will enable the whole transition by holding the midfield. This will let us keep the boys fresher and not take such a toll on Zinny to get back and O to be our sole creative playmaker.

    The freak out is ridiculous and expected as the people freaking out have never trained and formed a team nor have they drafted a team sheet on match day. I just wish knee jerk twitter didn't get so much coverage. The boss saying "time will tell" is true for any good manager, time always tells; it is called training for a reason. As a coach, I would state that the #1 quality for any proper coach that understands development is "observation." Period. All the coaches at a professional level know their craft; they are not just cone pushers. What separates people is their ability to properly observe an environment so you then make the best decisions to develop the environment. Arteta knows this and is a master at two things primarily: 1. creating a player centered environment that promotes team unity (this is the psychology of coaching) and 2. creating a tactical setup built on technical mastery that plays to the identity the team is trained to develop at Colney. BOTH are based on setting up an environment to an identity as you constantly observe how players respond so you then can implement change to improve the process. In fact you hear Arteta use the word process a lot; it is because he has a process for each player and the team as a whole and he is observing how each player integrates into the team into his processes. He will have an idea of where he is going, he knows why he told Edu to go get Havertz, yet now it is up to Havertz and the team to integrate and he has to observe how the recipe cooks...how it comes together.

    Also I rly hate this rhetoric that Arsenal need a ST that posts up 30+ goals per season alone. If the front 3 bag 25/30+ g/a each and Odegaard + Havertz contribute with their 25+ g/a more or less. Arsenal will be fine, it’s not like they struggled scoring last season.
    If Partey, Balogan and other fringe players are sold and Arsenal end with 80m+ to play with mid-August, I rate they try for another young established DM like Tchouameni - test Madrid’s resolve regardless whether they try for Mbappe or not.
    And promote the yutes like Nwaneri and so on…

    We have seem more rotawhen we are confident and flowing already. Saka and Odegaard on left Martinelli central and right. Jesus most places. Havertz will definitely be looked to create space but also make a lot of runs into the box. More than Xhaka. I see him getting 8-12 goals. More fluidity but with new players may take a little while to really get going. Patience. Chances of us getting to half way with 50 points is slim.

    Interesting insight the only thing you didn't consider is Arsenal's defensive phase of the game,how many of those front 5 players have the work ethic & desire to track back to win the ball not just running back for the sake of dropping back & will they be willing to do that defending for the entire 90 mins week in week out? Pep had that same problem until he shifted to playing 4 central defenders who can defend dangerous better than the overlapping & attacking fullbacks like Cancelo. Finding the right balance in attack & defence is the challenge. Looking forward to seeing how much Arsenal will improve or transition from last season's style of play to a new one

    I think instead of Odegaard, Tierney would do it instead while Odegaard stays at no. 10. On the right side, we could see Timber instead of White with (I think) very similar role to Zinchenko, only this time, it's on the right side. Could be only an insubstantial suggestions from an uninformed bystanders though...

    Can't have 5 attackers plus Zinny attacking and only 3-4 defending. Not even ManCity can do that. Odegaard shouldn't be forced into defence as well. What a waste of talent that would be.
