@@YasserTejeda Thank you for speaking up about "Our roots". Self hatred is a big issue on both sides of our island but slowly and surely we all are waking up and realizing whether we speak a dialect of Spanish or French we share common ancestry. Your music reflects that.
No I for sure meant HISPANIOLA. I worded it that way so that our so called Dominican brothers and sisters would know I'm speaking about THE WHOLE ISLAND. I know my history. ✌
Thank you NPR Music, thank you Yasser Tejeda & Palotre! I do not speak your language but as soon as I heard Amor Arrayano my soul was touched. The song literally dusted off a stale love, took me right back to the earlier days of being in love with my now husband. The music brought back those early feelings that had been buried under years and years of 'married life' and taking each other for granted. So thankful this beautiful song rekindled those memories, I will keep them alive. Thank you for this beautiful set.
Great to see this band and Dominican roots rhythms getting the exposure they deserve here. The band plays fusions with the roots rhythms congos (from the town of Villa Mella), gagá (related to Haitian rara) and palos. These rhythms are deeply rooted and Yasser Tejeda & Palotré are one of many Dominican artists in the Dominican alternative scene that incorporate them into their repertoires creating interesting fusions with jazz, blues, rock, r&b, etc.
Honestly, it looks and sounds like they're having so much fun and as a musician I really really enjoyed that energy and passion, like even at the end, they kept singing and playing like they too didn't want that time to go

This music stems from palos, which a broad term that encompasses merengue pri Pri to salve. It is not very well known and it’s often looked down upon in DR because of its ties to voodoo, similar to Bembé and Lukumí in Cuba, religions which are misinterpreted. Regardless, this is amazing and I’m really glad they got to play in tiny desk, I’ve been following them for a while and were a big source of identity for me during 2020. The last part with the March like feel is called Gaga and it was borrowed from our neighbors in Haiti. Mucho orgullo 🇩🇴
Thank you for sharing! I love learning about history, cultures and the music intertwined. I was super sheltered regarding music, growing up in a white religious US house...with a tiny worldview. My first taste of the world outside was ironically through a church trip to Mexican orphanages, when I was a teenager. It opened my world perspective and I wanted to know more about all the different people, beliefs, and more...of the whole world. What a beautiful world. Wish we all were less threatened by difference, but instead inspired and awed. Thanks again for the educational info! 💫
I will use some bullet points to organize my thoughts: (1) No. Gaga is not Haitian. Gaga is a dominican cultural expression popular of the bateye communities (sugar plantation communities) in the interior of the Dominican Republic most often populated by those of cocolo descent (anglophone caribbean immigrants of African descent), Dominicans, and Haitian migrant workers and dominicans of haitian descent. Many dominicans erronously attribute gaga to being Haitian (2) Palos are not necessarily looked down upon in DR. Its just not a mainstream cultural expression like Merengue,Bachata, Dembow are. Palos are a niche expression from small afro descendant communities across the country. But its definitely not that popular as the genre mentioned above. I have seem it being played in some parties abroad and back home. But you have to be aware palos also have religious side to it which is why it may not be consumed as widely in my opinion (3) what Yasser Tejeda does and sounds like is mostly fusion which blends jazz, merengue, bachata, gaga, palos, and other caribbeam rhytms together to make something very rich, unique, and beautiful. Props to him and his band for making such amazing music and sticking with it for so long. Been a fan of him for a few yeats now. (4) He is part of a greater alternative "Fusion" movement in the DR which other artists such as Vicente Garcia, Riccie Oriach, El Gran Poder de Diosa, Xiomara Fortuna, La Gran Mawon, Vic Contreras y La Alucinante Banda, among others
@@edcasado6651 Thank you for this response, it was much needed. I'll keep it consistent with bullet points as well 1) Now I know that Gaga is Dominican and Rara is Haitian, but I still lack listening to fully distinguish the difference. I do have to say that songs like El Juidero and Palito De Coco take inspiration from Gaga/Rara, or it literally is that. Is the reason why Gaga is misinterpreted as Haitian because of the many Dominicans of Haitian descent and Haitian migrants that play and dance to it? 2.) I did say that it was looked down upon because from my experiences it was attributed with brujeria and generally people seemed to be scared of palos. I remember listening to Narciso El Pavarotti saying something along the lines of "Esa vaina de Guira y balsie eso e' de Haitiano." But then again, my experience does not speak for everyone. That was my mistake. After researching a while I did come to find out it's more accepted than I thought. I agree with you, I think the religious side is a reason why it is not consumed as widely. I noticed Yasser Tejeda's group were clever with the names and their approach of religious matter in their album Kijombo having "Papa Boco," "La Culebra" (Santa Marta), and my favorite one "A La Dolorita" 3.)Thank you for dropping these names. I've been listening to Yasser Tejeda and his group for a while, and discovered Riccie Oriach a couple weeks ago as well as Afro Dominican. I definitely want this music to flourish. At any rate, I appreciate your response. I still have a lot to learn about our country's culture and history.
