- I've been dreaming of testing out this absolute monster ever since I first got to handle one at Photokina in 2014. A huge thanks to Sigma UK for loaning it to me for a couple of weeks for testing - and what a challenge that testing was!

So, like a proper Bond villain, you chose to hide your face until you unveiled the doomsday weapon. What a magnificent lens with which to make a grand entrance! Bravo!
To be honest, you can see his face in some older videos :) But it doesn't change anything about how great videos Chris is making :)
Hahaha. 😄👍
As others have said it's not the first time he's showed his face, check out his video about the various camera brands.
Lmao, watching this video right after coming home from seeing No Time To Die. :D
I was going to post something similar like "i wish to thank Sigma UK for loaning Chris a lens which forced him outside in front of the camera" and it was also my first time seeing him...well done and as much a gentleman in front of the camera as behind 👍🏻
So happy to see you in front of the camera after all these years happily watching your videos :)
And all it was needed was a gigantic lens.
@@quikee9195 lol
i thought the same thing! made me smile seeing him for the first time lol
You can see him on his older videos.
I've seen him in plenty other videos.. Didn't even notice he wasn't showing his face recently..
this is what you get when you give the engineers the company's credit card
Now take a look at Canon's 50-1000mm lens
Agree, nice review but I do highly disagree with the statement super-tele lenses of it's time were comparable in image quality, because they actually were extremely sharp and they have been now for at least 30 years, go compare a Nikon AF-I 400mm f/2.8 from the 1990's or the Canon 500mm f/4L IS from 1999 and you'll see they are extremely sharp, even wide open and even into corner's, they are sharp wide open. Your statement that this Sigma has comparable image quality to super-tele lenses of it's time, is completely wrong and shows you obviously are not a previous or current user of one. I've owned and or used almost every super-tele lens from both Canon and Nikon since the 1990's and they have all been very sharp, today they are extremely sharp, but they have always been very sharp. The only thing unique about this Sigma is it's f/2.8 aperture at above 400mmm to 500mm. This allows it to produce more background separation than even the reigning kings of bokeh, the 600mm f/4 lenses! If you divide the focal length by the aperture you get 150 on the 600mm f/4m and on this Sigma at 500mm f/2.8 you get something like 172, which is amazing! Overall great review and I hope my comment does not seem harsh or rude, I just completely disagree with your statement on the image quality vs. lenses of it's time. This was fun to watch, I've never seen this lens in real life, but I have seen and used some rare lenses such as the Canon EF 1200mm f/5.6L and the Nikon 13mm f/5.6, both of which had amazing image quality and both of which would be a dream to own. The CIA, FBI and I'm sure the British Mi5/Mi6 own a copy of the Canon 1200mm f/5.6L!
@@Knowbody42 Or the Canon 1200mm f/5.6, absolutely comical size and price tag
@@Knowbody42 That's mainly expensive because it's a broadcast lens, and broadcast lenses are expensive. This is expensive because of the feat of engineering of getting a constant aperture f/2.8 on a 200-500mm lens.
@@eyalgreen8285 It has a focal length of 50-1000
It is funny how one makes a mental picture of a person base on voice, then it all changes when you actually see/meet that person, like in this case. Interesting review thank you Christopher.
I know right! I had thought he was a male in his late teens lol
@@Lucy-dk5cz He definetly sounds much younger than he is.
He has videos from 5 years ago that show him.
Perfect for my Canon M50! Hand held vlogging just became cooler.
Lmao
The most expensive part of this video surely must have been renting the airport runway to get those test shots in frame :)
Yeah, seeing him do the 1000mm shot I'm actually wondering how he properly lights the test targets/how many diff sizes of those he must have. I can't imagine having only one about the size of printer paper and having to find a bowling alley to attempt to light it and shoot on.
@@TeddyParkera long and flat drive way with an open garage door will do the trick I guess.
@@frankluo230 I wonder if UK weather allows that to be a really clean shot lol. Here in SoCal I would be worried about harsh sun inconsistency. But constant overcast would make that shot probably work 100% of the time
@@TeddyParker I had similar thought when he tested rf 800mm f11.
@@frankluo230 500mm isn't THAT long, really. Especially with smaller things like a test card or a light bulb. Even on a crop sensor it isn't all that zoomed in.
This is the kind of lens Arnold Schwarzenegger would shoot with. HANDHELD.
Hehehe...
"See yoo at dah partee Sigmah *augularah*"
@@timchristensen2522 Perfect! Exactly what I would expect his punch line to be. 😂
@@ElusiveFrame It popped straight into my head 🤣
Chuck Norris can shoot the Canon EF 1200mm handheld.
Lol i can’t believe you got to review this gargantuan piece of glass! A production that I’ve worked for actually owns one of these, we put a “point this way at enemy” sticker on it because of how intimidating it is to be standing on the other end.
Thanks for the review, Chris. Years ago, I happened to be at B&H Photo in New York when they had this lens on the sales floor and attached to a Canon 1D X. A customer had sold their copy to the used camera gear department, and they couldn’t help themselves but take such a rare lens and put it out for people to try. It’s easily the most ridiculous lens I‘ve ever witnessed (in a good way), and credit to Sigma and their engineers for not being afraid to try new things.
That moment when you get to see your best friend of 3 years in person for the first time :')
Is that you Chris? OMG! Finally, today my wish to see the person behind that voice come true...Love from The Republic of India 🇮🇳
Chris has frequently been Infront of the camera in earlier videos too.
Infact, you'll see him in almost all of his newer videos of you know where to look 😉
Finally! I was waiting for Chris to do this one as I've been eyeing this lens up for street photography for ages!
lol If you mount it on top of a vehicle.

I loved everything about this review
“An asthmatic dinosaur in mating season..” I laughed so hard I projected coffee through my nasal cavity onto my main monitor. Cleanup was a breeze, while continuing to laugh. Easily my favorite review on your channel to date! Bravo my good man, bravo!
I really liked the intro and the different style you were “forced” to do. You should try being in front of the camera more often. Great job!
Josh Yeo needs to put this on a gimbal. With an One-Wheel
It’s nice to see you in front of the camera.
I have been following and watching your videos for many many years.
Keep the good work.
Such an nice little camera attached to the lens 😅
Great review as always, Chris! Love the new more personal intro :)
This lens is a masterpiece. Absolutely amazing equipment!
I am so very glad that this absolute unit of a lens exists.
Aaaaaahhhh! It’s nice to see your face, bro. You’rea great review and it’s always great to watch your videos. Thank you for your great work!
I remeber when this lens was announced and I looked everywhere for reviews, and all these years later we finally have one from a good source. Cheers to that.
I first saw one of these, around 2010, at the Sigma booth at a big photography trade show. Needless to say, I was amazed. But, I pretty quickly realized that, for my use, it was impractical due to the size and weight. I still find it amazing and I give props to Sigma for designing and building this beast, just because they can. For my own use, I have the Sigma 100-400 for use when I'm fairly stationary and on a tripod. For more mobile, handheld use I have the much lighter Sony 70-350 lens. Both of which, even if not super fast, are good solid lenses that give me very good image quality. Really enjoyed your video demoing this unicorn. Thank you.
It is absolutely GREAT to see you reviewing one of the most incredible lenses ever made. And it's even better seeing you in front of the camera! Thank you for your work, and have a nice day!
in my mind he will always be twenty-something due to his youthful voice. cool review, hard to believe they actually made (and sold) 200 of those monsters!
"...long after apes have taken over the planet", "asthmatic dinosaur during the mating season", Ok Chris, when can we expect the review of time machine you've been using?
That was the most hilarious lens review I've ever watched, I was crying.
Been wondering about the image quality of this lens for years, so it was cool to see you review this!
A great lens for a long mountain walk !
The best lens for vloggers! Wide, small and light 😀
Those zoomed in landscapes at ~f20 with the sunstars looked absolutely gorgeous. Thanks for bringing us this unique content Chris!
Just love how you deliver your review with this legendry Sigma lens; being formal with adlibs of truly timely funny impressions expressed Chris! 👍
Oh this huge chonker! You finally had your hands on it!
Would really be useful for Olympic photography.
Thanks Sigma for the Experience!
One of the most exciting review yet.
For almost 5 minutes straight, I could not stop smiling ear to ear and laughing. This lens is so f’n ridiculous 😂
I used to go have serious insomnia back in 2019 and would put frost lens reviews to lull me to sleep with hi calming voice . great to finally see who the fellow is . Also tried amateur photography and bought a lense he reviewed . good content . very wholesome
I own a Tamron 420mm 2.8f from the 1980s. It comes included with a removable pre-lens 43mm filter ad 3 adapter mounts; Canon, Contax, and Minolta. It’s a pretty insane vintage lens that’s super sharp.
wow!!
Perfect lens for weddings.
They'll never know you're there.
You can practically work from home with that lens! Just need the wedding address.
Interesting lens, nice review but best thing for me was seeing someone else that keeps old jumpers going!
Saving the planet, one jumper at a time.
Thumbs up!
That part about setting fire through the viewfinder seems so crazy at first but then you realise it’s actually true..
anyways we had a barn…
Awesome to see you, love your reviews.
Looking gorgeous mate, glad to see you on camera.
I think I'm going to have to strengthen the durability of my camera strap! Great video and review as always. Always nice to see you in person.
Now that's a blast from the past ....A golden oldie.
Way before COVID, I was given the opportunity to use this beast of a lens. It’s so much fun to tinker my fingers around. I have to remind myself that this brute is the same cost to that of my Toyota CHR 2019.
And all this time I thought the Canon 600mm f/4L I used to shoot surfing with was a beast.
That thing's crazy!
Great review.
LOVE IT! I've been looking at pictures of this monster for years, thanks for doing this video! Fun stuff.
Chris you've got good camera presence. I don't know you've hidden behind the camera exclusively. Seeing you with the lens at least briefly does add a more professional feel. Good job.
finally ive been watiching your videos for 6 years
🤣 love the asthmatic dinosaur. I can't believe, You had the chance to test this monster. Super video, thanks.
Normal photographers: my camera has a lens mount
Chris: my telescope has a camera mount
Dont know why but i really like your tone. It gives me a peaceful moment when i am learning about lenses
Nice to put a face to the voice!! Thanks for reviewing this monster. If you haven’t sent it back yet, can we get some more moon shots?
Perfect all around lens. For everyday😁
Having to choose between working out or some casual photography? Do we have the solution for you! -Sigma.
Reminds me of Thunderbird 2 - it's that green I think :). Great review.
I had a really short demo with this one inside a Sigma Streamliner. Got told it saves the lives of polar bears. And that I have already been photographed with it once before.
The largest lens I own is a 150mm f/1 LWIR (8-12μm) Germanium lens for thermal cameras.
There is a face behind that velvety smooth voice :-). Good to see you Chris!
1st ever overall review for the SIGMA monster. Excellent work Chris. !
"wildlife photography" made me chuckle
so glad you did a review on this lens!
You are not how I pictured from your voice, but great to see you presenting to camera! Thanks for all your reviews. Keep this style, it’s fab!
Oh my gosh, I didn’t get the true scale of that thing in the opening shot until you cut to the tripod shot. Geez that thing is massive.
Good God! That thing is a behemoth! I came across your video because I'm looking to get into astrophotography (deep deep deep DEEP space) with a MFT camera. But until I fork out another few g's on a Go-To mount, this is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy too big for my SkyGuider Pro's 3kg safe payload! Never-the-less - totally love the review. This is a dream lens, for sure.
Great to finally see you in front of the camera 👏👏👏
Nowadays for the price of this lens you can get a couple of lighter, more versatile telescopes (refractor, SCT or RASA) with similar or better aperture ratings and focal lengths. Great video. Sigma have to be the best 3rd party lens manufacturer.
I have been watching your videos for YEARS and for some reason I always thought you were of asian decent (which would not have changed anything, obviously). Congrats on your channel, you rock. Cheers from Canada!
This is my favorite lens review ever. Thanks for such an entertaining and humorous video.
it's so huge that he had ended up showing his face to get everything in shot!~
So happy you got to try that beast! I hope one day I too will get my hands on one!
Now I can officially call you, the greatest lens reviewer! No cap
So great to see you infront!
wow this thing is incredible. Seems as epic as it looks. Thanks for the review. I've been waiting for someone to review the Bigma.
This lens was more of a show-piece, even at the time. It was meant to generate discussions and articles about Sigma, consolidating the image of a powerful brand. It also hepled establish value in local photo stores, for those who could afford to have one on display. It's like the NOCT 58mm of Nikon or all of the concept cars being made all the time. Pretty cool, but not much use in the real world. I am sure that, if it sold well, they would have made an improved version 2.
The 58mm Noct has very good image quality though. Even at f/0.95. At least you can see what you're paying for. Meanwhile this one is worse than many much cheaper options.
Chris that’s you! Finally the man behind the voice. Thank you for your videos!
Haha that was me on the rocks you were filming! Was a good day..
Oh I was hoping to see a review of that monster from you for years, thank you!
HOLY SHEET!!!! BRO That's a mythical beast , gawd !!!
Does it come with a lens pouch
JUST WOW!!!!!!!!! Thank you for sharing this with us!
Thank you for making a real review of this legendary lens, there are so many "reviews" out there, where somebody gets thier hands on it and then don't know what to do with it.
Although expensive and very unpactical, this lens also fascinated me for a long time. It's just amazing that they really tried to stretch the limits of what they can build, and create something like that just because they can. Sadly modern camera and lens manufactureres aren't brave or stupid enough to try something like that.
So, basically, it's crap for the money.
Still want one!
A 200-500mm at a constant f/2.8 is pretty mind blowing. I'm sure it would be useful to some.
@@eyalgreen8285 Those who buy it they know what they gonna use it for :)
Nice to meet you, Christopher! And oh, what a nice little camera attached to the lens...
Thanks so much for reviewing this lens, I’ve always been curious about it!
Impressive! Thanks for the review. Good selfie lens. Really interested to know more about those dinosaurs you mentioned 🤗
Having you in front of the camera makes the video enjoyable to watch. You should do it more often!
Wow Christopher, thank you so much for this review, or best said for me it's the first tie I see something like this! Always saw it just on stores online, but this is another world's lens! It's a beast, seems more for as you said military use. I loved that piece of technology! Thank you again and best regards from Uruguay!
What a treat to use that lens! What an absolute beast
Would be a perfect lens for nighttime wildlife photography! You could even do some deep sky astrophotography on this one without a tracker! (though a tracker would be much more affordable)
This was always a dream lens for me. The ultimate zoom lens 🤤
i had glimpse from other reviewers never this through one , great Chris!
yay im happy you got your hands on it!
Finally a review of this lens 😂
It's not surprising that the lens has a battery of it's own. It takes a bit to move those gigantic glass elements.
Fantastic review Chris. Up next is Canon's EF 1200mm f/5.6L USM Lens Review
Just imagine a 170mm f0.95 (same diameter), that would be amazing.
I think there was a Zeiss lens with similar characteristics of course not intended to be used for a casual photography :D There was an image of it floating on the internet, it was used for some sort of projector.
I really wonder how that thing would fair in astrophotography, its monstrous, good range comparable to a lot of telescopes, lets in loads of light.
Might be a royal pain to get the stars in focus though.
500mm isn't as long people seem to think it is.
@@stubones You can still get some nice astro with 500mm though. Otherwise you can always use the extender to get 1,000 mm, but with the 5.6 aperture you'll want to find a tracker to move with the sky, and which is built so insanely sturdy that it can handle 40 pounds of lens
Congratulations, Chris and very nice to see you sharing the frame with a monster you tamed so well! Oh, and very beautiful those night industrial views of refineries, too, not to speak about your dear and photogenic wife I salute- with your permission! ...With such a big weapon at hand, one must be careful... ;)
When I saw you were reviewing this lens I immediately liked the video. What a legend
Thanks, Chris, for sharing this with us. If you didn't share this, I wouldn't have known this lens existence
Wow... I only had few doubts before i could pull the plug on this one and you have cleared them all, its a no brainer for me now. This is the only thing which has stopped the Aliens from invading us, i guess thats what you meant by military use. :) btw so glad to finally see you after years of following. initially it looked like someone is dubbing your voice :) . great work champ
looks like an awesome portrait lens. Soft... & all that Tony.
