  • AUDIO PLUGINS THAT ARE GENUINE TIME SAVERS || How to produce music faster and still get clean mixes
    My name is Paul Third and I am a Scottish youtuber / audio engineer / mixing engineer / audio geek. I mostly cover audio engineering related content ranging from audio plugin shootouts / plugin comparisons (acustica audio plugins, universal audio etc etc) to actual analog vs digital / gear vs plugins plugin tests via access analog and mix analog. I even include ddmf plugindoctor tutorials in my plugin reviews so you can be your very own plugin tester and experiment and understand whats actually going on under the hood. I also discuss digital music distribution from time to time and like to give my viewpoint on online music distributors such as onerpm and distrokid.
    All of my audio blind tests involving music production software are conducted in avid pro tools 2021 which is my main daw and I also use HOFA blind test 4U as my blind test software. In terms of my audio interface I record and monitor through my audient id44 and use an audio technica AT2050 for all of my voice overs.
    This week I'm going to be looking at some music production software for beginners who are looking to focus more on the creative elements of the song without being bunged down by all of the 'boring' clean up thats involved in mixing tracks.

    FYI this isn't a video stating that you can mix an entire record with just these 5 plugins. These are tools that used a certain way can make certain elements quicker and allow to focus on more creative elements of mixing I.e. Automation, Parallel comp & saturation, panning, fx, verbs, delays, 2 bus processing etc etc
    Just puting that out there... Awwwrite 🤓

    RESO, eh? I can't say I was very impressed with it. I found I could only get good results by manually tuning in frequencies, in which case I could just reach for a dynamic EQ. The innterface was counterintuitive as well.

    • @PaulThird
      @PaulThird  2 года назад +7

      Stuck it on every track, let it do its thing. Dialed it back on 2 or 3 tracks linking the input and output. 10 minutes. Job done.
      Keeps the transients in tact, doesn't affect the phase as much as other dynamic eq's and I changed the default to the full freq spectrum and also -15db to really test it and still kept everything super clean.
      Won't find any complaints from me 🤓

    personally not a fan of resonance detection. not all resonances are bad in context and IMO its better to target the problem frequencies with your ears and only correct things when you need to. I will occasionally use soothe on bright material

  • @TonyJBrennan
    @TonyJBrennan 2 года назад +2

    if only they could create a plugin that could translate idea thoughts to finished tracks ... - ah well. .. from my experience the most resonant smothered tracks are vocals and acoustic guitars recorded in home studios , especially closets with blankets in them . Reso might help a lot in that case. the more you do this the more you love having a great sounding raw recording per track , it just mixes it self .

    Not feeling the "reso" thing... in the age of Soothe or DSEQ it's kind of limited. Snare drum rings and such are easy to find and correct with EQ, but pitched sounds like vocals the resonances move around. The other thing is, most troublesome resonances also have a stack of harmonics associated with them... so a plugin that only detects and squashes the fundamental of a resonance inadvertently allows the resonant harmonics become more apparent.

    • @PaulThird
      @PaulThird  2 года назад

      I just used my ears and liked what it done.. That's really all I can go on. its genuinely what I've been doing with fabfilter but takes me a fraction of the time so for me it's a no brainer.
      Reso is one of the cleanest dynamic eq's I've seen. I don't have Dseq however it isn't anywhere as clean as reso but we're still talking like -130db vs -180db so even though it's 50db of a difference its still in a non audible range but to me reso does what it does incredibly clean and I like how it really keeps the transients in tact as well as not really affecting the phase that much.
      A smart transparent resonance suppressor for £40 is pretty good going in my book. Depends what you've got already. I'm fortunate to have reso and soothe so I can use both to taste. If I had to pick one id always choose soothe

    Imho, i have a demo beta of sonible. I wasn't impressed much, because tone balancing is not my cup of tea. It worked, very clearly...

  • @akagerhard
    @akagerhard 2 года назад +5

    I consider myself to be a lover, not a hater - primarily. So let's start with the good:
    These "smart" Plugins will only get smarter. Eventually the only thing they can't do, is hearing what is special and moving about the individual song and make creative decisions to enhance it. Thus the mixing engineer of the future will allmost exclusively be a creative guy - and not a nerd. Also it IS true, that the song comes first and when you focus on the feeling, that's when you can get the best out of it.
    Hoooowever. Reso finds more resonances than are problematic.. so wether all of that work was necessary (it killed a lot of the vibe imo) and wether it would be worth it (after compression and effects) is something, that is very hard to judge from this point on (for me at least) - I'd need to hear the finished mix. Pocket Knife by Bronze Radio Return is a) a great song, b) not easy to mix. I think one has to use Reso with more caution. I'd only take out 1-3 of the nods at this stage. And revisit it if compression brings out/creates problems.
    This is why: If you kill the vibe, it will be hard to reintroduce it later down the chain.. and you'll raise all kinds of problems trying. If you don't kill a problem in the beginning of your chain, you can always come back to the beginning and clap it.. you will not UNCONCIOUSLY try to fix it with an EQ, Comp, Saturator or Reverb.. a problem is a problem.. that's a lot more clearcut than "vibe" and you know how to fix it. That's the philosophy of small moves. And that's a big difference between producing and mixing. Producing is big moves (transitioning to small-moves is problematic for me too).
    Mixing is not a one-way-street from top to bottom. If we were all-knowing and all-powerful it would be.. but we ain't and neither are the plugins - and that's why most make small moves and come back to the top when necessary. I try not to ever underestimate the artist. He hears himself.. I assume most of what is there SHOULD be there. Glad you joined me for another mixing-philosophy-comment with Gerhard, the oversharing german.
    PS: Bassroom, Mixroom.. don't have it, don't intend on having it, never heard of it, can't talk about it. Reso on the other hand is on my list. But I don't feel urgent about purchasing it.

    • @PaulThird
      @PaulThird  2 года назад +1

      I did purposely go overboard with reso with -15db max default for the video but I'd probs still use all the nodes but have it default at -5db as I've got soothe after compression

    • @PaulThird
      @PaulThird  2 года назад +2

      I think the main process for me is understanding why I'm taking them away. I agree that if you are doing it just cause you think you should do it then defeats the purpose as you don't have an understanding of what your listening for.
      I prefer cleaner mixes. I listen to my first single and despise it cause at that time I didn't how to get it any cleaner. I know the mistakes I made now but I know it could have been so much better.
      Cause I was listening to everything in the mix I could hear that the harmonica was cutting through better with the suppression, as was basically everything else to my ears.
      I've always done it as I hear more punch and detail in the mix. Many could say I'm removing vibe but vibe is something that's easy to add in.
      I personally believe that without the resonances reduced you will subconsciously eq more in the mix to get certain elements to stand out because you lack that detail and sepetation that subtractive clean up can add. By eq'ing more you'll also bring up the resonances more. So if you think about it.. At the start of the mix you don't really hear it until say a 6db boost in solo. But after compression and big eq brush strokes I'd argue you definitely would but it's one of those where you don't know it's there unless you take them out and compare as your ears are tuned to the mix without suppression.
      Like aliasing, having too much resonance can build up over a mix and kind of cloud the detail that's hiding behind.
      Its just about knowing when you are going too far
      That's just how mind thinks haha and it's just my opinion

    • @azizarrahim6977
      @azizarrahim6977 2 года назад +2

      @@PaulThird I relate with your thought proccess Paul. I always found myself using subtractive eq after serial compression. But after using soothe and dseq when I compressed the signal, I was making boosts instead of cuts as I found the sound to be pleasing and I wasn't actively trying to fix something.

      True but this multitrack session was recorded via telefunken who organised all the multitrack sessions. They know their stuff.
      Even the best mixers in the world have editors who clean up the recordings prior and some of those recordings are from the best studios in the world.
      Good recordings are vital but still doesn't mean there isnt clean up involved
