Mike Mangini, a guy who had to sit down and learn each notes of most of the 100+ 15 minutes long songs of the entire discography of a band he never played in before in less than 4 years, (songs with a lot of different parts, time signatures, grooves to remember...), Who not only had to learn these parts, but who had to translate them from a right handed drummer point of view (MP) to an open handed drummer point of view on an open handed drum set, do you realize how much of a work it is ??? So keep your opinions for yourselves, Mangini deserve to be where he is now, and not only is he playing the songs right, but he is doing with alot of accuracy, dynamic, and energy !

People can talk about "attitude" and "emotion" as much as they want but Mangini is an amazing drummer, overcame just by some of those you mentioned! It really reminds me the golden years of Images and Words. Impossible not to get excited seeing this guys playing and enjoying together ... thanks and prog_on!
I can't wrap my head around the mindblowing musicianship, intricate time signature changes, extremely layered compositions, raw talent of Dream Theater. They're THAT good.
Mangini obviously is having a lot of fun playing and keeps the performance tight. I really don't know why people are still complaining and nitpicking about? Great performance, even from LaBrie ^^

One of my favorite songs ever. The intro to the first verse and the actual verse riff is probably my favorite guitar section. I can listen to it over and over. 😀
diamonds are forever! they are get older by day,, but the quality is not.. the best goddamn band i ever seen maybe in this century! so lucky can enjoy much beautiful music from this band!
I'm 43 years old with a vast music collection and have experienced many live shows of different genres. These guys rock live apparently, as I have never seen them, only on you tube. I'll be checking out there website after this post for concert info. I never would have listened to them if it weren't for Kala Scarpinski. They are a great band!
Dream Theater is the whole reason I started playing music (keyboard in particular) 20 years ago.. This song is one of the first songs that I heard by them that really stuck with me. It still does to this day. No matter how their music turns out nowadays.. they will always have a special place in my heart as one of the best bands of all time. No, their current music will never compare to the masterpiece that is Images and Words- but no band can ever compare to me that is the immense talent that is Dream Theater.
When he's just singing, James sounds fine. When he does that high pitched yell, it makes my colon clench. Look, guys, Mike Portnoy and Kevin Moore are never coming back. Crying about it is like staying in on a Friday night, and crying about a girlfriend you lost. Move on already, Jesus. Dream Theater has Mike Mangini and Jordan Rudess now, and they're both incredible musicians. They might play it a little differently, but it's equally as good. If you want to hear it exactly as it was recorded on IAW, listen to the album. Part of the live experience is hearing these masters play a song that is over 20 years old, and performing it as the musicians they are today. As good as Petrucci was back in 1992, he's 10 times the guitarist he was. Everybody changes (except for John Myung. He never grows older. I think he has a painting hidden away in a closet somewhere doing the aging for him! ;) DT is so much better than the other bands out there. And the new album is incredible. Stop whining about "Portnoy's gone, Kevin Moore is gone, blah blah". Accept them for the incredible prog metal masters they are, and enjoy them while they are still around.
What the? 1st time i saw a dt video on youtube... i swear... thats why syn always praise jhon... he is truly a god... one of synyster gates favorite guitarist..... im a fan from.now on...
I'm a fan of DT since 2004... I really love Portnoy's drums, but I don't miss them. We already have so much of it. When I feel like, I just play some of their older albuns. This... This is something new, something different... And I love it. LaBrie just sounds awesome. Petrucci, Myung and Rudess - marvelous as always. Mangini's just refreshing. Many people don't like him or just keep saying Portnoy's better. Well... Don't get me wrong - changing can be difficult, I know - but this is great. And if you can't enjoy it just because isn't your favorite drumguy playing... This is a little sad.
I completely agree. DT wouldn't be DT if they had any other singer besides LaBrie, his voice fits it so perfectly. That's one of the main reasons why I'm not a very big fan of 'When Dream and Day Unite'.

Ofcourse he doesn't sing like he did in 90's, but if we look at James Hetfield from Metallica; he doesn't sound like he did 80's and early 90's. And I think James Labrie isn't so much bad. He has kept his voice well and I will compare it to Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson, he doesn't scream like he did on The Number Of The Beast album today but he has kept his voice very well like James Labrie.
Totally agree...but if you really want to hear James voice in its comfort zone listen to his solo stuff like Impermanent Resonance, utterly amazing!!! As much as I love DT, been a fan since the first album, I almost enjoy his solo work more....almost.

I dedicate that song by Dream Theater to those seven astronauts thats mission should have been put off untill repairs had been made to better assure them a safe.return home !
Myung seriously needs to fucking increase his bass volume level for fuck's sake, why does he always keep it so low?the bass is supposed to be as loud as fuck!!!especially at a concert.
Anyone who hates James' singing here needs to go watch how he sounded between 2004 and 2011 (ESPECIALLY '08 and '09). Just be thankful he's come this far back! And don't even get me started on all the people commenting here who don't want Mangini or Rudess in the band...
Sure, Rudess is technically better, but he will never have the emotional power that Moore has. Check out his project Chroma Key for proof. Of course this makes Rudees more qualified for Dream Theater, but they truly have lacked the Spacey, Dreamy emotion since Awake. Also Moore writes some of the best lyrics to ever exist, he sure has a better message then Rudees.
This improvisation is priceless 2:49

Hey, what does an open handed drummer mean??
Actually, he doesn't have to play typical "open handed" style, because of having HH on the right side of the kit, so he can play kind of "right hand open-handed" thing, anyway, no denying on how much work he put in and how underrated he is, even within the band - Petrucci mixing the music makes the guitar louder than everything, so you have to listen very closely to hear the BD, the snare is a bit compressed, but not as much as when MP was in DT. Mike's drumming is flawless. Glad to see he's made such a positive landing with DT. And yes, Myungs bass volume is too low in the mix.

Can hardly hear the kick. Very little attack.
What about the Keyboards? Jordan is way too low
Myung's volume is always low.

La mejor versión de Pull me under jamás hecha. Y James merece una mención aparte
Lyrics:
Lost in the sky
Clouds roll by
And I roll with them
Arrows fly
Seas increase
And then fall again
This world is spinning around me
This world is spinning without me
Every day sends future to past
Every breath leaves me one less
To my last
Watch the sparrow falling
Gives new meaning to it all
If not today nor yet tomorrow
Then some other day
I'll take seven lives for one
And then my only father's son
As sure as I did ever love him
I am not afraid
This world is spinning around me
The whole world keeps
Spinning around me
All life is future to past
Every breath leaves me one less
To my last
Pull me under
Pull me under
Pull me under I'm not afraid
All that I feel is honor and spite
All I can do is set it right
Dust fills my eyes
Clouds roll by
And I roll with them
Centuries cry
Orders fly
And I fall again
This world is spinning inside me
The whole world is
Spinning inside of me
Every day sends future to past
Every step brings me closer
To my last
Pull me under
Pull me under
Pull me under I'm not afraid
Living my life too much in
The sun
Only until your will is done

Great performance. LaBrie sounds great.
Serious lack of Myung.
+ThePoetech Labrie sounds great??? at what second ? my god. unlistenable. i truly TRULY DEEPLY loved DT until before six degrees... then, the void.
ahah this means that before he sounded just terrible? nah. i saw DT in italy 2 times in the early 2000, and he was way better, at least.... maybe...
+Jupiter Giant He was much worse live during the Systematic Chaos era. This is actually really good for him lol
I heard him in the Change of seasons era, and honestly i was not so shocked about his voice..anyway, drugs can do this (on my memories, i mean). :P
Myung seriously needs to fucking increase his bass volume level for fuck's sake, why does he always keep it so low?the bass is supposed to be as loud as fuck!!!especially at a concert.
best skill. Best harmony. Best progresive rock...
live in ARGENTINA, BUENOS AIRES!!!! amazing!
Does mike mangini's drum tech ever get to see his family and friends?!😂
Drummer joke of the decade!!!
LOL 😂 no shit right ??😅
Anyone who hates James' singing here needs to go watch how he sounded between 2004 and 2011 (ESPECIALLY '08 and '09). Just be thankful he's come this far back! And don't even get me started on all the people commenting here who don't want Mangini or Rudess in the band...
*When I say go watch how he sounded between '04 and '09, I mean specifically with this song.
Não existe banda melhor que dream theater
Uma banda completa de tudo
Pasan los años y LaBrie mantiene su hermoso timbre y potencia. Con esta rola me hice fan del Dream allá por 1993 algo más quizá. Viva Dream Theater!!!
Looks like guys the sound of this Guitar.. very strong and clean!
Very beautiful and Badass!! 🤘🏻😎
still awesome vocal!
People talking about Portnoy, the keyboard lines belong to Moore
+DarkKage HD yes, indeed!
+DarkKage HD yeah but rudess is playing everything 2 times faster here. just listen
Actually, Rudess made a couple of arrangements to some sections.
Rudess is better
Sure, Rudess is technically better, but he will never have the emotional power that Moore has. Check out his project Chroma Key for proof. Of course this makes Rudees more qualified for Dream Theater, but they truly have lacked the Spacey, Dreamy emotion since Awake. Also Moore writes some of the best lyrics to ever exist, he sure has a better message then Rudees.
No one could replace Mike Portnoy in Dream Theater except Mike Mangini!
We can like DT or not, but I think it's fair to say that it's amazing how this song after more than two decades is still current!
Better drummer ever
