This was a fun really easy project to build. I tried to keep weight and size of the tools down as much as possible. There are definitely some interesting possibilities here. Please share your ideas below, or on our Reddit page. Here: www.reddit.com/r/Earthling_EDC/ Many thanks for stopping by.
I was thinking you could just do a pocket rack put the tools on one side and then put the hook part of the hook and loop system on the back of the pocket rack so that when you take the rack off, you have the loop part stuck to the back of your phone case so that’s not going to be the scratchy rough part if you don’t have the tools on your case. And then when you need the tools, you can just stick them on your phone and then go about your day or leave them on there if you want to use them every day like that.
I got a great idea. Make a 3d printed case so the tools sit on the inside as if it was the phone. But add a holder on top to carry a headlight. (The part where the camera cutout is) This way you can slide in and out of a pocket without getting caught, people are used to the form factor and you can even cover it with a notepad like a moleskine
@user-gh5dg4vt1h - Thank you for your post. I've had a couple viewers mention that it is a really good remix. I need to print one out for myself. thanks for the feedback.

@ToolTechGeek - Thank you for taking the time to post your thoughts on the new cell phone case design. I agree with you. It might be a good solution for some folks who want to carry small edc tools.
@@EarthlingEDC I'm foraging the local area for a disgarded phone case. I'm going to use it as the base for the edc rack to fit in my tobacco tin. All my bits will be a lot better on there rather than loose in the tin

Great idea. I love thinking outside of the box... instead of putting all the tool on my phone case.... I put them all on my watch .. I have a knife , pen and pry/screwdriver on my watch band and the watch has a light ... only think missing in wrench
I had designed a similar card as yours for wallet storage on phones which was hand sewn into the back of the phone with 1/16th shock cord. It was single layer with cards between the 3d printed layer and the phone and a slot to push the cards out. Now I'm thinking th outside could have your type of slots for tools.

I’ve been planning a trip to my cities library, where they have a small maker space including 3-D printers. If you download all the files, you might be able to find one near you?
@caitriley1255 - What I showed in this video is a rather extreme example. You could easily build a less packed organizer on a phone case. It really is pretty easy to make. Thank you for your post.
I mean to make it magsafe, you just need a square flat magnet like for fridges instead of his velcro jury rig. And you can make any phone case magsafe compatible by slipping in a metal plate. Magnetic phone mount kits for the car will provide the plate to make that side of the hardware easy
@aboriginite - That would probably work. My concern would be adding extra weight and thickness to the phone case. A big reason for the design in the video was to keep the attachment bands low weight and not add to the thickness of the case.
@@EarthlingEDC that's understandable, I'm just thinking in terms of having the edc card detachable but still pocket well by matching up with the size profile of the phone
@@aboriginite the pocket rack was actually designed to fit on the back of an iPhone 14. I figured apple spent a lot of time coming up with an optimum size for the iPhone and I might as well go with what they came up with. So the idea of mounting one on a phone is something that interests me, just figuring out how to keep weight low and the EDC secure while minimizing the thickness of the phone, the rack, the attachment device and the EDC is a challenge. This design just attaches the EDC directly to the case which I think is as slim as I'm going to get it. Thanks again for sharing your ideas.
Nice video :) Printed my first Pocket Rack and starting to use it. But my hair bands are to weak. I cannot find the bands he uses with those knobs on it. I really like the shrink tube idea as well :) I already also attached a little metal tin with velcro. it's so nice how many appliances the pocket rack opens. but the bands he is using are so cool. so i do wonder wwhere he gets them from? edit: I want to get them in my country i know there is a PDF. Which is much respected that you have this.
This is such a great idea. If I may suggest, you and ArrTEH should do some collaboration, he has somehow incorporated some of the tools from a victorinox swisscard into his phone case. If you combined your ideas you’d have the ultimate EDC phone case
@rogerp.2442 - Thanks for your post. There was actually a phone case on the market about 10 years ago that had swisscard like tools built into the phone case. It retailed for about $75. The prototype in the video in the video allows you to customize it anyway you want. Which I like. Thanks for the info regarding @ArrTEH
If you used a Victorinox 58mm midnight manager, it has a pen in the scales. You could then remove the pen and replace it with the 1/4in extender. You'll need the torque. Just a thought. Keep up the efforts.
@owniecogs1 - Thanks for the post. I actually had something like that then figured out that he stainless steel pen can be inserted into the ratchet center to give me that extra torque when the bit is in the handle socket. :-)
Hmm. I have a couple of extra, cheap phone cases. I wonder if I could also mock up some sort of kickstand with this method. Or use one of the tools as a modified kickstand. I have the Olight OTacle tool which is lightweight and has a thin profile. It might be perfect to carry like this.
@trevorvalentine7721 - Thanks for your post. I'm pretty sure you could figure something out for the kickstand. Match sure that cases have ome type of hard plastic back so that the staples have something to anchor to. Best of luck.
I dont have a 3D printer so I made a toolrack from a piece of plastic and worked on it with my dremel. It does not deserve a first price but its absolutely sturdy and functioning.
@mdascoota4293 - thank you for your post. That's how I started making the pocket racks. Take a look at my first video :-) ruclips.net/video/bvm2ivZTILs/видео.html Best of luck to you.
I bought a stick on card wallet ($6) for the back of my phone case . I put a fresnel lens , pocket bottle opener and Victorianox Swiss tool card. No pliers … but everything else I need to have on me is with me 100% of the time . Not as comprehensive as this …. But way more accessible to most of us.
There is an episode of New Girl, where the character Nick, creates an incredibly similar product. It gets called "real apps". And is later scapped due to the name sounding like "relapse". But yours is way better!
@happylittletools - Interesting, now I need to look that up. I know there was a company that made a cell phone case with a proprietary integrated tool set. I can't see to find it any more. It sold for around $80. This one is cheaper and you can add whatever tools you want :-)
I noticed velcro on the back of your phone case. Have you tried having different pocket racks and velcro then on. You could have a few different setups , work , camping...
@gf2e - Thanks for your suggestion and for being a subscriber. My concern with the magnets is that they have a tendency to break away on impact or sudden jarring motion. The elastic bands being used in the video hold items very firmly. I have seen people using magnet to position items inside of Altoids kits, but those items are in a closed container.
@williamh5396 - Thanks for asking. That's exactly why those velcro strips are there. They usually hold my wallet. I've also built out kits using pocket racks that can be attached to those strips. The negative aspect using the velcro is that it ads thickness to the phone case vs what I showed in the video, which attaches th EDC tools directly to the phone case.
@gpock8 - Thank you for your post. It sounds like the elastics you are using are way too loose. For more information on making elastics for your pocket Rack, see: ruclips.net/video/ZFAsJPWSyP4/видео.html
Why not just use one of the cards you have instead and use the hook n loop tape on the back of it as well so that you can use more than one card for more than one purpose.
@user-tn8en8wn2m - Thank you for your post. So the card is 2mm thick and the hook and loop is going to add another 2mm. So between those two devices you have added 4 mm of additional width to your phone and then you add the tools on top of that which is a lot. the idea of mounting it directly to the case was to save that 4mm for tools. Thanks again for your thoughts on this.
