  • This record is the original 1955 US press of Maybellene, which was the first Chuck Berry record and the instant hit - number 1 on Billboard's Rhythm and Blues chart and number 5 on the Popular Records chart. The song was recorded at the Chicago Chess studio on May 21, 1955 and released in July. Maybellene is considered a pioneering rock and roll song, it was an early instance of the complete rock and roll package: youthful subject matter; a small, guitar-driven combo; clear diction; and an atmosphere of unrelenting excitement : )

Another seminal disc that kicked off the British R&B boom in the early part of the following decade. Chuck Berry was far more consequential for the development of rock music than Elvis.

Chuck is the king of rock and roll! Pretty wild guitar solo for 1955.

He was amazing. Got see him live about 20 years ago. He was still amazing. I'd love to know when the video was made. Later than 1955.

Strictly speaking the same process as with Elvis Presley's first single.
Regarding the latter: Sam Phillips was looking for a "white" voice that could sing "black" music.
In the first case: the basis is a "white" Country & Western song - to be exact: a Western Swing song by Bob Wills (and that music is already a mixture of Country Music, Swing Jazz, Blues and "Pop").
The Chess brothers and Chuck Berry chose a Country song and gave it a Blues structure (but without the “heavy” diction and often erotic metaphors of "black" music and with a “clear” guitar sound).
A "white" hybrid performed by a "black" musician, just like - the other way around - the "white" Elvis Presley performed a "black" Blues.
Maybellene also had clear lyrics that appealed to young people. In principle: all young people, wherever their ancestors came from.
Sam Phillips succeeded in his aim. So did the Chess brothers with the first Chuck Berry release.
And so Rock ‘n Roll began in the eyes (and ears) of the general public (there were songs that fell under that heading before, but they remained within the R&B field).
By the way: the name Maybelline appears as well in Berry's “You Can’t Catch Me” (recorded at the same session).

If they were 21 in the video they'd be 90 now. So, dead probably.
