RIP. A legendary film-maker. People will always associate him with 'The Exorcist', which remains a masterpiece, but many wouldn't be aware of the sheer diversity of his work. Before making 'The French Connection', he did a great adaptation of the Harold Pinter play 'The Birthday Party', then he directed 'The Boys In The Band', one of the first films to depict gay men in a raw, realistic yet sympathetic manner.
We desperately need directors like this in hollywood now. People with artistic vision and a drive to make interesting , real movies that shake people up. Not the safe, formulaic, dull, politically correct stuff we have now.
Not just darkness but honesty about humans. Honesty of our darkness and complexity is not allowed in movies today, just positive portrayals and quotas. Cinema is at its nadir.
I know he was in his 80s but this still got to me. I consider Sorcerer one of the greatest movies ever made and come back to it every year or so. French Connection and Crusing (and of course Exorcist) all have a feel to them I’ve never seen elsewhere and are a joy to watch. Even though his output went down and his later feels didn’t capture the heights of the 70s he was a unique filmmaker who had no fear making the movies how we wanted them made. Gritty, layered and masterfully crafted. Always interesting to watch. I’m genuinely saddened he’s gone but really appreciate what he’s left us.
He was an extraordinary man and film director. My favourite movie of his is "To Live and Die in L.A.", but all his movies are unique and legendary. May he rest in peace. He was one of a kind.💔😢
He was a great guy. I got to see The French Connection with him a few years ago in Beverly Hills. He was an amazing story teller. I will miss him dearly.
RIP Mr Friedkin. Thank you for scaring the heck out of me with The Exorcist. This absolute masterpiece has left an indelible mark on cinema. It is simply one of the greatest films ever made and because of that, you will live on 🙏
First time I saw exorcist I was alone in home that night , i couldn’t sleep until morning .. it was the scariest film I ever saw … RIP MR WILLIAM YOU REALLY SCARED ME THAT NIGHT
Mr. Friedkin was one of my favorite filmmakers of all time! French Connection, Exorcist and To Live and Die in L.A. are some of my all-time favorite films of his. Also just watching him in interviews talking about his craft of filmmaking and the stories/anecdotes he tells are beyond fascinating. RIP Mr. William Friedkin❤🙏😣
To Mr. W. Friedkin who left us with a psychological horror masterpiece that was well before it's time. I don't know if you realize at the time by creating the blockbuster movie the Exorcist of what you really had on your hands directing this film. And here we are 50 years later, and nothing has seamlessly come close to topping this masterpiece. R.I.P Mr. Friedkin you are what legends are made of.
For twenty years ive realized that William Friedkin making The French Connection in 71 and The Exorcist in 73 and they are the best urban crime drama and the best horror film ever made and having never made either genre movie before, consecutive genuine masterpieces, is the greatest 1 - 2 punch within the entire history of movie directors.
Thank You William Friedkin for The French Connection and The Exorcist. And the best movie of story We mourn your departure but we celebrate your legacy in the cinema. Thank you for so much and you will always live in the Olympus of the great film directors in history. R.I.P William Friedkin.
The Exorcist, The French Connection, Cruising, Sorcerer, Bug, To Live and Die in L.A., The Boys in the Band, Jade, Rampage (which never got a decent Blu-Ray release) Cinema would be a lot poorer without him.
Wow! We lost another iconic filmmaker, William Friedkin. Billy sometimes provoked his actors in an effort to give it their all, and not all of them appreciated it. But, that's the way he was. Both "The French Connection" and "The Exorcist" have praised as landmark movies, and deservedly so. But he also made other fine films as well, such as "Rules of Engagement", "The Hunted," and "Killer Joe". I would like to think that his movies will be remembered and studied for years to come. Billy, rest in peace, and I hope to meet you in the afterlife.
Still terrifies me. I really don't think the new film will hold up and have the same impact. They pretty much can't do trailers anymore without showing too much. Every possession film that has come out in the last 20 years has ripped off The Exorcist and can never do it justice.
Do we think it's connected to the Film? seems awfully suspect. He directs a film then dies out of the blue 50 years later . The films curse continues...
Very sad news. A great filmmaker, with an amazing hability to create atmospheric films in a documentary-style, that give them a very realistic tone. One of my favourite directors and one the best. He'll be missed. RIP Mr. Friedkin
When Friedkin got it right he was a masterful director. The French Connection The Exorcist Sorcerer To lIve and Die in LA are all undoubted works of art. Friedkin was an uncompromising and no nonsense character, he dealt in what IS not in what SHOULD; and I respected him for that. One of the greats, absolutely no doubt about it.
He didn't tell us until near the end that he was a Ukrainian Jew. He consistently showed us an ugly world, but like von Stroheim before him, his work declares that he loved it anyway.
He was such an interesting person and as a director too. He seemed to know more about the spiritual battle of good vs. evil than he led on. I always hoped that his follow up film- Sorcerer would have been more highly regarded as the decades wore on. RIP Mr. Friedkin.
He was so much more than just horror movie director. This annoys me that he's only remembered mainly from The Exorcist, as his skills were much more than making people scared. Hopefully BBC will do deeper documentary about his career, as this news thing was pretty poor imo.
from what i saw of him In interviews I thought he was rather rude and obnoxcious. but I certainly do see his talent . I shall miss his great artistry . From Michael from Yorkshire and proud of it .
One of the best SCARIEST MOVIE EVER!! even at the age of 44 years old and every time i see this move (THE EXORCIST) I SCARED!!!!!!! RIP William thank you for the scary FUN
Friedkin will surely be missed. KILLER JOE was my favourite film of his. NC-17, uncut, disturbing and sadistic, shocking. Shame it was his last film as a result of the censorship and morality politics.
The Exorcist is not so much a Horror movie as much as it is a movie about Faith. More specifically a movie about Catholic Faith; but it can also transcend to other Faiths. It is about the belief in Demonic possession and the power of faith in Christ to drive out the demon. "The power of Christ compels you." Friedkin was Jewish by heritage, but indicated that he was agnostic, yet nonetheless, in every interview about the Exorcist he said that the movie was about the power of belief, the power of faith, and of good overcoming evil. R.I.P Mr. Friedkin.
Friedkin was born in Chicago, Illinois, on August 29, 1935,[5] the son of Rachael (née Green) and Louis Friedkin. His parents were Jewish emigrants from Ukraine.[6] His grandparents, parents, and other relatives fled Ukraine during a particularly violent anti-Jewish pogrom in 1903.🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
All praise be to Hollywood and the actors, writers and directors who has contributed so much to our propaganda and whom we must idolise, marvel at and take our social cues in life from...
A great director who made superb movies unlike the trash they pump out now. Even he said modern movies are trash and the super hero junk was "opium for the eyes". A lot like the sterile fluff pushed out on the BBC youtube channels.
I saw the Exorcist in the cinema when it was first released in U.K. the British Red Cross & St John Ambulance medics were present in & outside the cinema ready …..
He dies the same year his greatest Film , his most universally touching powerful product, horror film get its most looked to original revamp. I hope the director doesn't disappoint, this most beautiful thoght provoking, very special case of the mystery of rare Supernatural, that intereferes with people with malevolence and the many alternate angles of dealing with that particular horrible interaction the person undergoes , from spiritual figures of from the domination of catholicism by Father Merrin in the 1st film, being replaced with another shamanic spiritual authority from another different religious order, I hope, best thing I liked from david Gordon exercise about it.
RIP. A legendary film-maker. People will always associate him with 'The Exorcist', which remains a masterpiece, but many wouldn't be aware of the sheer diversity of his work. “Gay, raw men” … ffs. Just glad you didn’t type those words on GB News! 🇬🇧
Oh ya he was such a godly man lol.
We desperately need directors like this in hollywood now. People with artistic vision and a drive to make interesting , real movies that shake people up. Not the safe, formulaic, dull, politically correct stuff we have now.

there will never be another director like him, ever, no one understood the darkness of life like Friedkin, a true Sorcerer
Not just darkness but honesty about humans. Honesty of our darkness and complexity is not allowed in movies today, just positive portrayals and quotas. Cinema is at its nadir.
Mr. Friedkin was a magnificent futuristic and super influential director. RIP
SORCERER is a classic along with his other movies. I’ll never forget watching his films. RIP
He will not be forgotten A master filmmaker and brilliant storyteller.
I know he was in his 80s but this still got to me. I consider Sorcerer one of the greatest movies ever made and come back to it every year or so.

Great shout on Sorcerer. Fabulous film. RIP Mr Friedkin.
Sorcerer was an amazing remake of Wages of Fear
He was an extraordinary man and film director. My favourite movie of his is "To Live and Die in L.A.", but all his movies are unique and legendary. May he rest in peace. He was one of a kind.💔😢
He was a great guy. I got to see The French Connection with him a few years ago in Beverly Hills. He was an amazing story teller. I will miss him dearly.

One of the best director of iconic 70s , and my favorite . Goodbye Mr.Friedkin. Your french connection , exorcist and Sorcerer always will be with us.

i just rewatched To Live and Die In L.A to honor him

Rip William David Friedkin, you will be missed
RIP The Master. I will remember mostly for "French Connection" (1971) & "The Exorcist" (1973). A Real Master Director.

R.I.P William Friedkin.
Sorcerer. 1977. Incredible movie.
One of the best. Never get tired of watching it.
RIP William Friedkin, the legendary director of The Exorcist, single-handedly the most iconic and terrifying film ever made.
The Exorcist, The French Connection, Cruising, Sorcerer, Bug, To Live and Die in L.A., The Boys in the Band, Jade, Rampage (which never got a decent Blu-Ray release) Cinema would be a lot poorer without him.
Still stands as the first horror genre film to receive an academy award nomination and as such deals with an eternal spiritual theme.
RIP Mr William Friedkin. Thank you for all you're wonderful films you will be missed dearly. ❤
One of the greatest films ever
THE BOYS IN THE BAND and CRUISING are two of his best films..
Wow! We lost another iconic filmmaker, William Friedkin. Billy sometimes provoked his actors in an effort to give it their all, and not all of them appreciated it. But, that's the way he was. Rip William friedkin xxx
He certainly created something powerful with the Exorcist
RIP William Friedkin
RIP that movie still gets me scared

Un véritable génie, pour toujours dans mon cœur, William Friedkin 💛

Not really, no.

Very sad news. A great filmmaker, with an amazing hability to create atmospheric films in a documentary-style, that give them a very realistic tone.
One of my favourite directors and one the best.
He'll be missed. RIP Mr. Friedkin
The French connection & Sorcerer were his best films not the Exorcist
I immediately thought of Mark Kermode when I heard this news. He was probably devastated to hear this.
When Friedkin got it right he was a masterful director.
The French Connection
The Exorcist
Sorcerer
To lIve and Die in LA

May his spirit of innovation, courage and gumption live on in present & future filmmakers. 🙌🏾

Nobody talking about how he fired a gun next to the actors in The Exorcist to try and get a reaction?
Fair play to the lad. His best film was schlocky horror, but it was good. ✊
I won't say: sclocky' as it was banned 🚫 by countries (Catholicism) around the world
RIP, great artist.

Forever will be instilled in my memory whether i like it or not

Let's not forget that the Exorcist is based on a true story, therefore, I don't know that it falls under the "mythology" category at all.

Just really sad.
Is he one of the last to die from that "cursed Exorcist Movie!
Obviously everyone on the cast is going to die eventually. He died because he got old. He's elderly.
Edit: just checked. He was almost 88 years old.
I’m guessing you are American with that silly “cursed” comment.
I came to find out in 2024 that he died R.I.P Fredkin and thank you For making my childhood a Nightmare😂

Fantastic horror film.
So interesting that he dies right before The Exorcist sequel comes out...

Great director. RIP.
A great director who made superb movies unlike the trash they pump out now. Even he said modern movies are trash and the super hero junk was "opium for the eyes". A lot like the sterile fluff pushed out on the BBC youtube channels.
