Didn't someone make a BSODomiser that did basically that? It was a little box that went between your computer and monitor, then at the push of a button it flashed up a blue screen just long enough for your heart to stop at your unsaved work being lost, then flashed up in a very different way.
You can actually run ScreenSavers as programs under 3.1! Going from memory here, if you edit WIN.INI, under the PROGRAMS= Line, add SCR to the end, restart Windows, and when you double click an SCR file it should run it. =)
We used to have things thing called "Wicked Windows", which was full of timewasters, like a bricklayer who covered over your desktop, or a cracked screen overlay.
I was always quite partial to the After Dark screensavers back in Windows 3 & 95 land. Modern powersaving has sort of killed the fun of a screensaver (as has stupidly expensive electricity... have my PC on full power drawing shit on the screen when I'm not using it? Oh god no *hibernate* )
I still use a screen saver on my 3 monitor Windows 10 desktop, and the only good one I've found that works well on multi monitor setups has been Electric Sheep. However on all my ChromeOS devices I don't use a screen saver at all since there are none for them sadly. I truly miss the days when screen savers were a big deal, as me, and my friends use to trade ones we had found on the net, or some disc included with a magazine like Maximum PC.
I think if you change the extension from .scr to .exe you can trigger the screensavers without having to hunt them down in the desktop manager. I know you could do that in win9x.
i think the reason screensavers are not really a thing any more is their current usefulness and lack of flashiness when compared to modern programmes old crt monitors could suffer burn in eventually and the screensaver was developed to stop this so they became quite popular and obviously .....because back in the 90s we were facinated by anything even vaguely flashy looking (i mean fmv and flash games were a thing at this time) we sort of viewed the saver as a flashy way of personalising a pc but modern screens dont generally have screen burn in and with more modern graphics tech the old screensaver has become less of a ..wow thing i mean they are still useful ....my pc is hooked up to my plasma and if you leave it on one screen it does burn in but if you run a video it will excite the pixels enough to get rid of it so a saver comes in handy but i think they are more part of the fixtures and fittings these days and less of an impressive thing their is less of a wow factor to having a fish tank on your pc these days
I use to screensavers little too expensive screensavers a good screensavers the phone screensavers a cool I like screensavers screensavers screensaver they are cool really uncle there really cool and then um why you make a video of little kids uncle with some
may favourite old screensaver is still the old 3d maze from windows 9x. remember having hours of fun with that
That's what I set my windows 10 computer to. ;)
ProTip: Combine those ico files of you and your parents with the Bill Posters for the ultimate in narcissistic screen-burn protection!
I keep clicking on these, waiting for the eventual "OH GOD! Where the hell did this Ascii Goatse come from!? AGGHHHHH!" episode. ;)
Why do you think I go through these disks?!!
Im super tempted to write a basic program that reveals something like that line by line.

Flying Windows was the only screensaver I ever needed when I was younger... so beautiful!
That's still my screensaver today! The Windows 98 version works fine on Windows 10, even with multiple monitors.
