I think that this was my favorite game of all time. It showed the importance of sharks and the role they play in the food chain. And that they do not deserve the reputation that Jaws gave them.
Abzu is one of my favorite games to watch others play. It allows me to judge a persons creativity, open mindedness, path of thinking, etc. This game is extraordinary, not just for its use of emotion and connection with ALL Sea life, but the fact that it's a perfect analogy showing mankinds impact on the environment. Throughout the game, you come across deadzones as well as machines. The little robots are seen broken down with oil having seeped into the surrounding sand and rock. I think what's most wonderful is there is almost no reward for destroying the machines and bringing life back, other than just seeing the beauty of a working ecosystem. Yet, almost everyone who plays doesn't notice the lack of a reward and is perfectly happy being at one with nature. I think this game allows us to see that we are meant to live in harmony with nature, and that we have to change the way society sees nature.
My favourite play through is by short one gaming, one of the players is really into marine biology so she knows a lot and is incredibly enthousiastic. They don't find many shells etc, but I love their enthousiasm for the game.
Pasha Staravoitau Agreed. Also tbh I’d love to see a sequel to abzu with more accurate ecosystems and more prehistoric ecosystems as well. There are so many incredible prehistoric marine animals that could be showcased.
"A modern day interactive Fantasia segment." This is quite an apt comparison for capturing the approach and feel of the game. I kept wondering to myself how to describe it to someone when trying to recommend the game. "It's a little like ballet" I thought, with the movement on screen matching up with the music and the two complementing each other to tell a story without spoken dialogue, but the comparison still didn't quite fit for me.
I'd like to think so. I was pretty happy with scripting that, though after it was uploaded I found that a couple of reviews, including IGN I think, had made the comparison. So most people will probably think I'm just parroting them. :P C'est la vie, c'est la vie.
Heh, I never read any reviews (I tend to avoid them). Regardless, it's a good way to sum up the game without having to go out of your way insisting it's not a diving simulator. I think without at least seeing some footage, many people would likely mistake it for such.
When I started playing Abzû, my immediate thought was "... Aww shucks, are they gonna cast the shark as the villain of this game? :/" as I'm very opposed to shark fear mongering. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised! Four for you, Giant Squid, four for you!
I love that during the game, even if the player is at first afraid of sharks (even if just the great white) they tend to love that great white at the end. :) It's one of the reasons that watching letsplays of this game is so satisfying.
This is probably one of the best things I've ever laid eyes on. I have always loved the ocean and its animals, particularly sharks and whales, and I am absolutely astonished and grateful for this game's noble portrayal of the shark. I wish more games and media could foster this kind of respect for such misunderstood animals.
I know I'm late but thank you so much for this video! As someone who is terrified of the open sea I still wanted to enjoy the beautiful design of this game and maybe loose my fear in doing so. The brief encounters with the great white at the beginning of the game shocked me so I definitely needed the spoilers. I know sharks are not evil and I'm glad this game doesn't depict them as such.
I know that I'm a little bit late to be commenting on these, but I just finished all three of your sharks in gaming videos and just felt the need to thank you for taking a deep dive into this topic. I really loved your analysis on the different portrayals of sharks and found all of the information given to be really interesting. I tried playing Abzu when it first came out but I have a terrible fear of water that is either dark where you can't see either below or above you or water that is very open, so I put it off and never went back to it. After seeing this video though I am determined to go back and complete it. It's such a beautiful game, the scene where the great white died and then later when it was revived both made me tear up. It's so refreshing and, as you said, very special to see a great white portrayed so beautifully and with such empathy.
You've got to hand it to *Giant Squid* on getting the emotions right - I've played *_ABZU_* start to finish 4 times now and every time, including watching it in this video, my eyes have watered when _'you-know-what'_ happens at the start of Chapter 6 :-(
My first time playing it I threw down my controller in disbelief and was very depressed until later in the game. It's been a long time since a video game elicited such a powerful emotional response from me.
I was watching a documentary called "Sharks of the Icy North"; it made me think of this video and now here I am. Still one of the best videos on RUclips.
What a nice video. You made me discover the Basking Shark!!! I had not spotted it during my first playthrough. And what a game, by the way... I just loved it so much and just can't understand how the other people don´t... It made me remember when I was 12 playing Ecco The Dolphin in Sega Genesis and, just like now, I loved it and everybody else thought it was boring as hell...
I think the basking shark is found where it is because they didn't want to startle (read *scare*) the common/casual gamer. I love sharks but when you showed the basking shark, even I was startled for a second by its gaping mouth. Obviously I just laughed at myself and enjoyed the fact there's a basking shark in Abzu! (Didn't know that...) So maybe it being a little hard to find could be a bit of a treat for those brave enough to travel down into the depths outside of the linear path the game sets. Like the whales down where you can find the basking shark. I haven't played the game, just seen others play it, and I just recently saw those whales because someone was brave enough to go down and discover them. Finding Grey Reefsharks where you would more likely find the Silky Sharks is a weird mistake, though....
I used to be terrified as Sharks as a child, but as I grew up I learned that they are just an animal to respect. Not fear. That being said abzu made me tear up over the death of an animal that I use to have nightmares of. Good job giant squid.
I love this game so much! I've replayed it several times now and sometimes go in to just swim around and vibe with the fish. I only wish they'd included some more rare and unusual deep sea creatures. I understand that there were graphics limitations, and I'm still really impressed, but how cool would it have been to see an oarfish? or a frilled shark? It's about the only game I wish there was DLC or an expansion pack for!
I know it might risk diluting abzu's unique identity but some kind of follow up to this game would be amazing. A standalone DLC or successor that explores more prehistoric fauna would be amazing
If I'd like to be a service. I am fairly certain that helicoprion is definitly no longer considered a shark, but a different group of extinct fishes closest related to ratfish like you said. That is to say, despite there being plenty of room for speculation, the helicoprion in ABZU is pretty similar to most accurate depiction I have seen of the genus, making it still a remarkable animal netherless. Amazing and breathtaking video as always. Will be sharing this XD.
Yeah, I was trying to leave wiggle room with that part, just saying likes like it "may" be slightly outdated. Most of the pictures I could find when fact checking are very similar to Abzu, but there were one or two which show the whirl as being further back and at least one with it actually in the back of the throat. Given the most recent text descriptions, I tried not to commit too much. Who knows what we'll be saying in a few years time! Same way I just outright avoided talking about the Carcharodon vs Carcharocles debate with Megalodon. :P But yeah, I think a lot of people that see it will instantly say ancient shark, so by putting it in here, I could mention that it's not one. I think BestInSlot did, who's one of the bigger RUclipsrs when it comes to prehistoric gaming. He also mentioned the teeth unravelling outwards, which is why I mentioned that's no longer considered the case.
BrySkye the general public does consider it a shark, but thanks to the general prehistoric community catching on to this misconception it probably won't last long. Nice talking to you bro.
+BrySkye Most recent studies do suggest that C. carcharias is more related to Isurus than megatooth sharks which then places C. megalodon in Otodontidae as Carcharocles although it's not exactly confirmed.
And that's exactly why I said "But let's not get into the taxonomy debate here" during a 12 minute segment of an already 85 minute video. :P It only came up at all because the shark in ARK: Survival Evolved is called "Carcharodon Ultramegalodon." I just call it Megalodon or C. Megalodon. I still tend to think of it as Carcharodon, but that's purely out of tradition instead of science and I'll admit that. I wouldn't try to build any kind of debate out of it though! Always tends to happen. We still have scientists and astronomers that insist Pluto still be a full fledged planet.
No no, I'm not trying to say you were starting anything, not at all. I'd like to think intelligent, non-aggressive exchanges of information would be the norm, but I've been on RUclips for far to long to believe that! ;) It's just future-proofing as much as anything else.
It sort of embodies the spirit of the ocean, or maybe the protector of the ocean. Since they don't have any dialogue or text besides the names it's unclear which exactly, but certainly a force for good.
Thanks for this nice upload :) I started looking up sharks in video games after playing so much Depth and I'm really enjoying these videos. I can't recommend enough the GDC talk from the Abzû team, really interesting.
Gotta be honest.. ive got raging thalassophobia but this game was too beautiful to miss.. also not ashamed of admitting I alt F4'd the moment that great white jump attacked the drone 😂
I really love how you took your time at looking at everything! I've seen a lot of let's plays from ABZU (because I'm in love with this game x3 played it a few times completely though) and most people rushed quite though it... They don't ride the fish, they don't dive down into the dark water, they simply don't take the time to admire all those little secrets. And it's often kind of funny how hard for some people it seems to figure out the story xD So I'm really happy to see other people love this game and sharks so much as I do... :3
MsLuckyLucario This game was so amazing, I had the giant squid achievement screenshot as my Xbox background for a long time. This game is so pleasing to the eyes.
A beautiful game. Thanks for making this wonderful video. It was creepy having to go deep down for some of the items for achievements plus the open ocean parts but a wonderful game all the same. Also having played subnautica, it is understandable being a bit uneasy around the predators in the ocean. 😂
Can we concentrate on trying to preserve these majestic, beautiful and important creatures, instead of things like the panda. Like come on. Pandas are kinda useless.
Reid Gaming sharks are apex predators of the ocean , without them, the food chains of all the oceans would be thrown into disarray and cause disaster. Pandas are cute but all they do is sit around d chew bamboo
Ok so I'm gonna be the one to say it. Rays are also Sharks. They're a part of the Shark family and I'm kind of sad they got no recognition in this even though we have Manta and Sting Rays in this game
Well, just about all the sharks mentioned are technically prehistoric. :P But someone like +BestInSlot would be a place to look for the likes of the ancient marine reptiles, etc, that are long extinct!
hey! i was searching around for videos about abzu and finding yours made my day, since it's really well-done and super interesting. thanks for taking the time and effort to create this, i'm definitely about to check out both "sharks in gaming" videos :]
Awesome video :3 and strangely I managed to get the basking shark above the deep level which was shocking but really cool. Took a minute but got it up there lol. Also I wish they did a couple things as this game is incredible: they could have had it where they could add on new areas to explore. Like different environments, more species to look at and so on like they have a great opportunity to do that omg. And second, I wish that had alike a mermaid skin for the character because I love mermaids and it really would've been a good fit in skins. Lastly I wished they would have made the arctic environment bigger, that would have been so cool -no pun intended XD- as there are many species that live in icy terrains.
Technically possible, though it wouldn't be anywhere near that elegant, nor can any Orca jump as high as the ones at that point in the game. You can find clips on RUclips of Sea World Orcas doing their best at a backflip. Given that in the wild they can reach dive deeper and achieve a higher top speed then, in theory, they could probably come close to a full rotation.
I find this game really a masterpieace but it could have a more open leveldesign, more things to discover and unlock, a unique soundtrack and a better and deeper story... Maybe in a sequel?
You could try out "Everything" on Steam, or at least look into it. There might be even less 'game' than there is in Abzu, but there's always a place for that.
Just stumbled upon this video searching up Abzu, Big fan of this game, sand a big fan of sharks, love the vid series. One question, I know they are in a different family, being a sort of chimera rather than the usual suspects in the sharky section of elasmobranchii, but I was surprised you didn't bring up the Ghost sharks visible in the game in the same area as the Goblin Sharks.
Yeah, that was pretty much entirely down to them *technically* not being true sharks. Footage was recorded, just didn't make the final edit. Helicoprion stayed in mainly because people think it actually is a shark. Honestly, I did a pretty bad editing job by mentioning that at the end, rather than opening with the distinction.
You know, I had kind of been thinking about it for the past few days. Possibly a Jaws Unleashed lets play too, but keeping the format of mixing in facts without taking the game too seriously. Plenty of options, but no need to rush and burn out. Both would be fairly big projects compared to Abzu.
BrySkye I know and you know. Jaws Unleashed is awesoommeee!!!! I almost never play games twice, but i finished Jaws Unleashed atleast 4 times. It is a really amazing game! I find the Shark well made too and it's just awesome to free roam and cause havoc around the island😂😂😂 Endless Ocean is going to take a long time tho, because it has a lot of sharks. Especially the second one. That one has even more, but it is really awesome. I'm litterally in love with sharks😂😂😂
lol... well, they compliment each other pretty well. Though kinda polar opposites as well, with Abzu being something you can 100% in a few hours, whilst Endless Ocean... well, the original is just about impossible to 100% and the second one will easily throw you past 100 hours! The do work well together for sharks though, they each have a few species that the other lacks. I think EO2 would have benefited with filling up more of the Zahhab open ocean with Oceanic Whitetips and another openwater species like Blue or Silky sharks.
If you're asking if the game is free, then no, it's not. Though it has been discounted in sales on both Steam for PC and PSN for PS4. It's only recently been released on Xbox One, though it'll probably be in a sale on Xbox Live at some point. If you're asking if *I* was paid anything from the developers/publishers in order to promote it, I can categorically state that I was not. Nor did I get a free copy or anything of the sort. I have never received free games or 'sponsorship' to feature any game, ever.
I can think of a few reasons. First, the only place it could be is the prehistoric/extinct section. which is a bit confined for something so large. Second, I don't think the devs would have liked to encourage the idea that C. Megalodon is not actually extinct (The Discovery channel has done so much damage with dressing up fictional entertainment shows as documentaries). Third, it would have rather overshadowed the significance of the Great White Shark in the game, which is basically the only other 'character' in the game other than the diver.
I actually checked ahead of time in a few documentaries, because I was paranoid about getting that wrong. It's probably just a difference between nationalities. Being a Brit, I sourced British ichthyologists.
I'm sure they thought about it in some way, but its for the best that they didn't. It would kind of take away from the games big moment with the Great White if, only moments later, you bump into a very similar looking shark that is three times the size. An easter egg like a set of fossil Meg jaws or teeth would have been pretty nifty though.
thank you so much and can you keep doing sharks in gaming im a huge shark week person i cried at the end of sharknado cause some sharks died rip shark senpi 2016-2016
Mhmm, if we go by the biologically accurate no claspers rule (which only a couple of games actually model. Saving them polygons I suppose) I do actually say "We'll be seeing quite a bit of her" in the video at 4:31 :)

But yeah, I think a lot of people that see it will instantly say ancient shark, so by putting it in here, I could mention that it's not one.
It only came up at all because the shark in ARK: Survival Evolved is called "Carcharodon Ultramegalodon."
I just call it Megalodon or C.
I'd like to think intelligent, non-aggressive exchanges of information would be the norm, but I've been on RUclips for far to long to believe that! ;)
It's just future-proofing as much as anything else.
I love this "mini documentary"!
I love that in abzu the great white is kind of a secondary hero
It sort of embodies the spirit of the ocean, or maybe the protector of the ocean. Since they don't have any dialogue or text besides the names it's unclear which exactly, but certainly a force for good.
Amazing video! Great to know someone makes these!
Am crying why I love sharks
I've played this game about five times over 😂 it's beautiful
Same here
Thanks for this nice upload :) I started looking up sharks in video games after playing so much Depth and I'm really enjoying these videos.
I can't recommend enough the GDC talk from the Abzû team, really interesting.
i freakin love this game. just got it and i was constantly gasping with all the animals and the great details.
I'm honestly terrified of basking sharks. they look so CREEPY
That makes 14 sharks all together with 7 of them found in hidden pools.
Gotta be honest.. ive got raging thalassophobia but this game was too beautiful to miss.. also not ashamed of admitting I alt F4'd the moment that great white jump attacked the drone 😂
Your voice is so pretty! :3
I... I have no response to this, lol...
Thank you very much for the information you share. It was very interesting!
Anyone else notice that at 29:28 there's an inverted triangle in the sky too?
Yeah, part of the story. :)
I didn't notice that; thanks for pointing that out! That's so cool!!!
This game made me cry
I'm thinking of buying this game
I bought the game 2 days ago and have already played through it 6 times
I personally want to thank you for introducing me to this game ^^ It's so beautiful, and so alive like you're actually there
I really love how you took your time at looking at everything!
I've seen a lot of let's plays from ABZU (because I'm in love with this game x3 played it a few times completely though) and most people rushed quite though it... They don't ride the fish, they don't dive down into the dark water, they simply don't take the time to admire all those little secrets.
And it's often kind of funny how hard for some people it seems to figure out the story xD
So I'm really happy to see other people love this game and sharks so much as I do... :3
MsLuckyLucario This game was so amazing, I had the giant squid achievement screenshot as my Xbox background for a long time. This game is so pleasing to the eyes.
Thank you.. I was scared to play this and watching your video really helped me
A beautiful game. Thanks for making this wonderful video. It was creepy having to go deep down for some of the items for achievements plus the open ocean parts but a wonderful game all the same. Also having played subnautica, it is understandable being a bit uneasy around the predators in the ocean. 😂
This is such a great video. Inspired me to make a video about ABZU
You should do a video on the evolution of sharks. That'll be amazing
Beautiful.
Can we concentrate on trying to preserve these majestic, beautiful and important creatures, instead of things like the panda. Like come on. Pandas are kinda useless.
Crazy Carno Lady don’t get me wrong, I love sharks, but are sharks really useful too?
Reid Gaming sharks are apex predators of the ocean , without them, the food chains of all the oceans would be thrown into disarray and cause disaster. Pandas are cute but all they do is sit around d chew bamboo
I LOVE SHARKS
Ok so I'm gonna be the one to say it. Rays are also Sharks. They're a part of the Shark family and I'm kind of sad they got no recognition in this even though we have Manta and Sting Rays in this game
I love great whites
Feels kinda sad that no ones talking about the prehistoric marine animals. ;-;
Well, just about all the sharks mentioned are technically prehistoric. :P
But someone like +BestInSlot would be a place to look for the likes of the ancient marine reptiles, etc, that are long extinct!
hey! i was searching around for videos about abzu and finding yours made my day, since it's really well-done and super interesting. thanks for taking the time and effort to create this, i'm definitely about to check out both "sharks in gaming" videos :]
D'aww, shucks
12:52 "AAGH SHIT WHY AM I UPSIDE DOWN"
There should be a mode at the end were you can create your own ocean world and spawn in your own ocean creatures
This video gives me life.
2:25
Did the orca on far right do a backflip? is that even possible?
Technically possible, though it wouldn't be anywhere near that elegant, nor can any Orca jump as high as the ones at that point in the game.
You can find clips on RUclips of Sea World Orcas doing their best at a backflip.
Given that in the wild they can reach dive deeper and achieve a higher top speed then, in theory, they could probably come close to a full rotation.
I wish I could play as the aquatic animals in ABZU
YES YOU DID IT THANK YOU
That Great White Shark Looks Like Submarine the Shark of the Darkness
I find this game really a masterpieace but it could have a more open leveldesign, more things to discover and unlock, a unique soundtrack and a better and deeper story... Maybe in a sequel?
"unique soundtrack"?
Uhm...dude...did you turn your boxes on while playing?
God this game is so pretty!
That it is~ Highly stylised, but the clean visuals are very crisp and really pop.
Great video this game is cool
Sharks 🦈 are not monsters and they friendly creatures.
And also the great white shark 🦈 is my favorite shark 🦈.
Sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo good
Yep I made a GREAT choice in getting his game for Christmas. By the way, What is your favorite shark? Mine is the Whale Shark.
Boy you’re lucky (btw my fav shark is the aggressive but cuddling one besides that i love all the sharks)
It's very beatyfull
if there is going to be ABZU 2 they should play as all the animals
Where was the Megalodon my dude? I saw him while playing but he's missing in this video :(
Great video dude! Could you pleeaaasee do an Endless Ocean Shark Special? pleeaaaseee. That would be awesome
Did you ever do a video on the Endless Ocean games?
😭my bruddas im the god of shark
Better than undertale
isuru it sure is
Master Tube thanks for agreeing
Easily agreeable.
abzu Vs endless ocean
lol... well, they compliment each other pretty well.
12:47 did anyone Else see that shark eat the entire turtle
Gotta add another comment for the sharkwater mention +1million for that..
that was ABZU-lating good
one like for the pun and comment your own pun
Noooo the white shark!
Fish are friend not food!
why the hammerhead shark is trying to eat killer whale
The thumbnail is the shark pog shark. A.k.a brasking? Bras king? Shark idk Wich one is right
Basking =p
'cause historically, its seen slowly swimming near the surface while feeding, like its basking in the sun.
@@BrySkye yeah that
La vie, not le vie.
Is this paid? Because i have to play this. It's a beautiful game.
BrySkye
I see.
@BrySkye If you have PS Plus for PS4, ABZU is absolutely free, in fact, that's how I got it.
Anthony wright i got it recently since a good friend of mine gifted me discord ntiro. and it is beautiful
I beat the game
Why no megalodon in this game
I can think of a few reasons.
First, the only place it could be is the prehistoric/extinct section. which is a bit confined for something so large.
Second, I don't think the devs would have liked to encourage the idea that C. Megalodon is not actually extinct (The Discovery channel has done so much damage with dressing up fictional entertainment shows as documentaries).
Third, it would have rather overshadowed the significance of the Great White Shark in the game, which is basically the only other 'character' in the game other than the diver.
Ok
Why did he say "Hell ih cup ryan"? It's pronounced "Hell ih cawp ree awn"
I actually checked ahead of time in a few documentaries, because I was paranoid about getting that wrong.
It's probably just a difference between nationalities. Being a Brit, I sourced British ichthyologists.
wonder what ad revenue he gets
Me? About $80 a month for the whole channel. Usually less on average.
damn the adpocalypse really got you there i mean 1 ad on 1 vid
how to educate with game
Ban finning.
I wish megalodon was in this game.
+BrySkye it would be cool to see megalodon attacking the whales.
or the bloop
You are exactly right :)
Andrew Semuas
There is a prehistoric section. I think they should've used the megalodon in that.
From where is your accent?
North East of England
🙄 Szép játék .
/1st comment
also in depth how do u look around the shark
In Depth? You have to press the 'free look' key/button, which you can configure in the options.
thank you so much and can you keep doing sharks in gaming im a huge shark week person i cried at the end of sharknado cause some sharks died rip shark senpi 2016-2016
the white shark is a female ...
Mhmm, if we go by the biologically accurate no claspers rule (which only a couple of games actually model. Saving them polygons I suppose)
I do actually say "We'll be seeing quite a bit of her" in the video at 4:31 :)
I like sharks, but they fcking TERRIFY me
