They had specific talents (Bonaparte was a gifted general, Mussolini was very good at motivating the masses, etc.), they were highly focused and competent, but more than anything they were lucky to be living at a time of revolutionary change. Without those external factors no one would ever have heard of them.
In the book Hannibal Rising, we see that he began as a caring child, protecting his sister and feeling sympathy for the swans on his parents' estate. The cannibalistic soldiers ruined his psyche.

They were both exceptional in their roles. Anthony Hopkins really ‘digested’ 😆 Lecter’s character from the novel and brought it to life in the film. His mannerisms, the way he moved even his voice seemed to fit perfectly. In the series Mads Mikkelsen presented, dare I say, a far more sinister side (if that’s at all possible for Lecter); the way he meticulously prepped, cooked and presented his meals. He also brought a more physically stronger side to Lecter. I was dubious at first about Hannibal being played by anyone else, but now I don’t think I could choose a favourite. They are different but bring in true aspects of Hannibal to the role they play. Magic.

I think it’s wanting to see the common denominator as to ‘WHY’, they become who they are. Many people get broken up with, have crummy parents or are bullied, which seems to hint at something deeper in their brains that more normies, no matter their tragic backstories, miss.
I’d like to make a suggestion to read Hannibal Rising. It goes into his childhood and what initially triggers him to behave the way he does. In fact, even though it was the final and 4th book of the series if you read it first, it is then in chronological order and will give you more insight into his character before you begin Red Dragon, The Silence of the Lambs and finally Hannibal.
He might as well call himself Dr. Colossus. His feats of intelligence and cunning are more in line with Batman's enemies than they are with any real human being. Seriously, him and Bane are pretty much on par with each other when you consider their movie portrayals. Both have superior intellects, wear the same masks and display super human strength. Both are charismatic, evil geniuses who speak pedantically without flaw. The difference is that people believe someone like Bane can actually exist. And in reality, Lector has more in common with Magneto than he does with a real serial killer.
Doc, please consider doing an analysis of Mads Mikkelsen's portrayal in the tv series Hannibal as a bonus to this one. Much more screen time to consider.

I can't find anything comparable to the show. Bryan Fuller's background in psychology, his literary & artistic styling, and his inclusive and original casting elevate the material. If only there had been the planned 7 seasons... and it took me 2 years to actually look at the screen and not just listen to the dialogue! Once I understood how grounded in empathy the show was, and the use of magical realism, I finally got to enjoy it 💖🙌
I just finished watching Season 1 of the “Hannibal” TV series, and I would love to see you analyze the character Will Graham, Dr. Grande. I realize he is as unrealistic as Hannibal Lecter, but I found him very compelling and complex. Great video, as always!
You're in for a treat with the entire series. It's extremely well made and the actors do a magnificent job of bringing both Will Graham, Hannibal and other characters to life. I'd also enjoy hearing Dr. Grande analysing the character of Will Graham, especially his apparent ability to empathise with and think like serial killers.
GingerJeanie I agree, I find him fascinating. You might want to read “Red Dragon” - Will Grant is the main character and you learn a lot about him. The two movies based on this book were nowhere near as interesting.

Lecter NEVER said "Hello Clarice" in the movie! That's an example of the Mandela Effect. His first words to her were actually "Good morning". It's one of those examples of when enough people quote something, it gets perpetuated and accepted as fact.
Such a great video, Dr. You did a spectacular job with the character analysis. Just my thoughts about a couple of things. I think many people find Lecter fascinating, because he was willing to help Clarice find the serial killer they were looking for, although he wanted something in return for helping her. And Also, I think that Anthony Hopkins' portrayal of him is probably one of the best if not the best acting jobs I've ever seen. In my opinion, if it wasn't him acting in that part, I don't think Lecter would be that fascinating. I've only read the book 'Silence of the Lambs' and seen that movie, and had no idea that Clarice and him lived together, WHOA. You are hilarious I love how you brought up things like "Cons has murdered and eaten clients in the past" and "Jaguars are maintenance nightmares." Hilarious!

I was drawn to the intricacies, complexities and how nuanced and contradictory the character of Hanibal was. It was beautiful to see the transformation of his character when he entered into a relationship with Clarice and the tenderness, vulnerability and connection between them that was quite unexpected and touching. As always the humour you sprinkle into your videos delights me! The line about eating clients and the pro/con list was killer🤣🤣. Thank you, Dr. Grande for this very interesting analysis. I was just as riveted as I was watching this movie for the first time. I'm feeling a bit nostalgic so I have to see if it's on Netflix!!

I've rewatched the film again yesterday. The acting of Hopkins still is phenomenal. I personally have no problem with his character being unrealistic according to typical categorisations. It need not be realistic in order to be impressive.
@sasholsuma he killed old lady Kristina (i think this was her name) because he started to believe that there wasnt any God, and that he is the one who should take action, or shortly said - the right to take a live. But still, he had some psychological background. Lets take his childhood for an example. Remember the horse beating scene? Maybe his first contact with violence. I think they Dr.Grande could do a good psychological analysis of the character. Plus, Dostoevsky loved to write deep books with deep psychological background.

doesnt a lack of empathy in this context usually refer to affective empathy vs cognitive? And that it is one of the reasons why people on this spectrum are so good at manipulating people around them. They can read facial expressions and body language, understand what the other person is feeling, while staying detached.
Agree, Hannibal would qualify as having cognitive empathy (of course this would have been important for his work as a psychiatrist) but lacking in emotional empathy

I'm always amazed by how seriously people take works of fiction as if the characters are real people. They're so concerned with how realistic a movie or book is that they fail to see the point. Entertainment. Escape from reality. My favorite genre is generally fantasy because there's no false pretense of realism needed. I was so excited when this came up in my notifications today. I'm a huge fan of the trilogy. I say "trilogy" because I just couldn't get on board with "Hannibal Rising" as a film. I enjoyed the book, though, as well as the TV series. Another fun fact about the series (that you probably already know) is that the character of Jack Crawford was based on John Douglas, one of the first criminal profilers and creator of the FBI's Criminal Profiling Program. Douglas's books make for an interesting read. Thank you for another great video!

Hi Todd, another good video! I just graduated with an MSW and when I took all those psychology related courses my favorite professors were good at doing what you do, which is providing examples of different disorders using well known fictional characters or famous people who had been in the news. It really helps people understand mental illness, so long as people understand that the diagnosis may not always be 100% accurate since we do not know all the facts surrounding their case.
I agree that Hannibal Lecter was written to be unrealistic on purpose to make his character more interesting and entertaining. Most serial killers tend to be quite boring, very shallow, and extremely self-centered, which would make for terrible reading, so it makes sense why the author wrote him the way he did. Excellent analysis as always! Love your videos.

Lecter NEVER said "Hello Clarice" in the movie! That's an example of the Mandela Effect. His first words to her were actually "Good morning". It's one of those examples of when enough people quote something, it gets perpetuated and accepted as fact.

Such a great video, Dr. You did a spectacular job with the character analysis. Just my thoughts about a couple of things. I think many people find Lecter fascinating, because he was willing to help Clarice find the serial killer they were looking for, although he wanted something in return for helping her. And Also, I think that Anthony Hopkins' portrayal of him is probably one of the best if not the best acting jobs I've ever seen. In my opinion, if it wasn't him acting in that part, I don't think Lecter would be that fascinating. I've only read the book 'Silence of the Lambs' and seen that movie, and had no idea that Clarice and him lived together, WHOA. You are hilarious I love how you brought up things like "Cons has murdered and eaten clients in the past" and "Jaguars are maintenance nightmares." Hilarious!

I was drawn to the intricacies, complexities and how nuanced and contradictory the character of Hanibal was. It was beautiful to see the transformation of his character when he entered into a relationship with Clarice and the tenderness, vulnerability and connection between them that was quite unexpected and touching. As always the humour you sprinkle into your videos delights me! The line about eating clients and the pro/con list was killer🤣🤣. Thank you, Dr. Grande for this very interesting analysis. I was just as riveted as I was watching this movie for the first time. I'm feeling a bit nostalgic so I have to see if it's on Netflix!!

I've rewatched the film again yesterday. The acting of Hopkins still is phenomenal. I personally have no problem with his character being unrealistic according to typical categorisations. It need not be realistic in order to be impressive.

@sasholsuma he killed old lady Kristina (i think this was her name) because he started to believe that there wasnt any God, and that he is the one who should take action, or shortly said - the right to take a live. But still, he had some psychological background. Lets take his childhood for an example. Remember the horse beating scene? Maybe his first contact with violence.
I think they Dr.Grande could do a good psychological analysis of the character. Plus, Dostoevsky loved to write deep books with deep psychological background.

doesnt a lack of empathy in this context usually refer to affective empathy vs cognitive? And that it is one of the reasons why people on this spectrum are so good at manipulating people around them. They can read facial expressions and body language, understand what the other person is feeling, while staying detached.
Agree, Hannibal would qualify as having cognitive empathy (of course this would have been important for his work as a psychiatrist) but lacking in emotional empathy

I'm always amazed by how seriously people take works of fiction as if the characters are real people. They're so concerned with how realistic a movie or book is that they fail to see the point. Entertainment. Escape from reality. My favorite genre is generally fantasy because there's no false pretense of realism needed.

I was so excited when this came up in my notifications today. I'm a huge fan of the trilogy. I say "trilogy" because I just couldn't get on board with "Hannibal Rising" as a film. I enjoyed the book, though, as well as the TV series.
Another fun fact about the series (that you probably already know) is that the character of Jack Crawford was based on John Douglas, one of the first criminal profilers and creator of the FBI's Criminal Profiling Program. Douglas's books make for an interesting read.

I’ve seen a few similar comments in different videos of Dr. Grande. That’s a small price to pay for daily informed and researched based video.
A 20 minute video takes an hour to record, at least 3 to research and another hour or 2 to edit and the good doctor is kranking these out 1.5 each day. Let him get his bag.

Hi Todd, another good video! I just graduated with an MSW and when I took all those psychology related courses my favorite professors were good at doing what you do, which is providing examples of different disorders using well known fictional characters or famous people who had been in the news. It really helps people understand mental illness, so long as people understand that the diagnosis may not always be 100% accurate since we do not know all the facts surrounding their case.

I agree that Hannibal Lecter was written to be unrealistic on purpose to make his character more interesting and entertaining. Most serial killers tend to be quite boring, very shallow, and extremely self-centered, which would make for terrible reading, so it makes sense why the author wrote him the way he did. Excellent analysis as always! Love your videos.
