  • We find the mystery leak on our Catalina 30 Sailboat in our galley water foot pump. A must watch if you own an older Catalina 30 with one of these older foot pump models still installed. These old seals can sink your boat if you forget and leave your sea-cock open.

Great video! Same problem here: After wondering for a long time where the water in the bilge came from, I have now identified the foot pump as the culprit. In my case (boat and pump are from 1988) it's the Whale Gusher Galley Mk. III, which looks about the same as your new pump. So obviously the newer model can also leak to the outside, although I can't say whether only when pumping or even when the pump is not in use. Since the rubber parts in the pump are wearing parts, Whale offers like for all other models a spare parts set.

Ha, I just ordered a replacement for a similar unit on my 1981 C&C 30. Like yours, mine had been leaking a bit into the bilge, and I had at least isolated it as the source of the problem, after doing what you did chasing suspect places like the windows and hull-to-deck joint.
This year, however, the day after I launched this year there was water in the bilge almost up to the floorboards. The gasket at the base of the thing had completely failed. Oddly enough, the thing was still working - pumped lots of water, but since it maintained a prime, it managed to act as a siphon right into the bilge. I thought it was just leaking residual water that was left in the pump after you used it. NOT!
I have ordered a replacement, BUT, from now on I am going to close the shutoff valve to the sink line as part of the drill when I leave the boat, even once the new one is installed - I don't trust these items any more, and will only open the valve when the sink is in use for (lake) water.

Thanks for the Whale pump video! I just bought the “new” style but the hole pattern is different. Did yours mount using the original holes or did you have to make new holes in the galley wall?

No, not at all the holes are not even close! I took a piece of paper and marked the holes and made a pattern to drill new holes. Also, as a side note - if you're putting new hoses on, its really better to attach them first to the pump BEFORE you put it back on. It's SUPER hard to get your hands in there to put enough force to get hoses on and turn the clamps once it's in place. Last tip.. have someone help you, its a two person job to get it back in. Bring money for your swear jar if you have one on your boat. lol.

@@wallydavid3 no sweat jar on my boat. If there were I wouldn’t have any money in my wallet! Thanks for the quick reply and the tips. I was afraid that was the case with the holes.
