The national government were defeated by the communist (supported by the people at the time. So much so that there are nationalist generals defecting to the people's liberation army) and retreated to Taiwan where they rule with an iron fist.
Then later Taiwan adapted democracy while the Chinese Communist Party strengthen their one party socialist dictatorship rule in mainland China.

Nah he was born there and at least a couple there knew that so when he said he was Chinese, when he’s always called himself malaysian/born in Taiwan, they were like “uhhhh oh god”. He was basically making a joke about the China/Taiwan tensions over whether it’s a country, by saying he was Chinese he was saying “Taiwan is a part of China, so since I was born there I am Chinese”. The fat smile on his face when he says it tells it all haha
