Vol of mould is 1000cc, initially when we add little water; it occupies the air space of voids. When we further increase water content there comes a situation when all voids are filled with water, which resembles maximum dry density. Upon, further increase in water as space constraint is there since vol of mould is constant I.e, 1000cc water replaces the soil space which in turn reduces dry density as unit weight of water is less than unit weight of solids.

1. Cohesion between particles increases.
2. It increases the concentration of electrolytes.
