This is a kick back song. Back in the days we didn't concentrate so seriously on the lyrics as much as the feel of the music and the basic message. The Doors were in a time of LSD and coming out of the innocence of the previous decades. The keyboard player was the great Ray Manzerak. Morrison was a force.
exactly! for me it was always about the feel of the music. Lyrics are great and have different meaning for everyone , but the vibe was most important for me.
Jim Morrison wrote this song while sitting on the beach in Florida at Pat’s Air Force Base. He was watching the surfers ride the waves that were preceding a tropical storm. He was brilliant. ✌🏻❤️

I suggest Waiting For The Sun for your next one -but there are many others I enjoy too --To answer your question I first heard this in 1971 when I was a sophomore in High School - back in the day hitchhiking was very prevalent and it woke me up to how danger could befall you unknowingly- made me think twice before trusting a random stranger
This may be the greatest goodbye song of any original band lineup. It's like Morrison is turning into a ghost before our eyes. The "killer" part refers to the film he was making called "HWY" which was never finished and truthfully didn't have much of a plot. Ray's organ playing is just spectacular here, providing the perfect atmosphere. The original mix had the storm sound effects higher and the fade out rain is longer. For some reason they changed it when the album was re-released.
The End is the masterpiece!
John Densmore is one of the most underrated drummers of all time. He was lead snare at UCLA and Lead snare in The All City All-Star Band in The Rose Parade. He is sooo damn imaginative in his drumming. There is no other drummer who could have fit this band like John. Ringo, Doane Perry, and Densmore are my biggest influences. But if I had to pick one. John is my boy.
This is my absolute favorite Doors song. I Love the organ solo. The Doors are in my top 10 list maybe top 5 groups of all-time.
ever notice the whisper track in one ear throughout, saying the lyrics? Jim was film student, wrote short film called The Hitch-hiker, lyrics of Riders loosely based on that script

This is the last song Jim Morrison ever recorded. He died a few weeks later. He was 27 years old.
In 1971 I was 10years old, I was listening to my old valve radio in bed one night, when I heard the sounds of waves crashing, thunder rolling, the tinkling of a Piano, when a Man's voice said "Riders on the Storm".
The 10-year-old me thought OMG!!! WTF is that??
It turned out to be a song that remains in my Top 5 or 10 to this day, depends on my mood.

You commented this was a morning song. I have a vivid memory from almost 50 years ago of waking up to my alarm clock/radio in order to catch a bus to high school. It was raining outside, and this song came on the radio. I stayed in bed until it was over, then walked through the rain to my bus.

The guy playing the "bass" and the keyboard(s) was Ray Manzarek AND he played "them" at the same time, in every song! They had no bassist.
I think a bass player/session musician named Jerry Scheff played bass on the LA Woman album.
Back when they were unknowns they had a bass player named Patty Sullivan. She was dismissed when Ray realized he could be BOTH the keyboardist and bassist.
@@kryer981 I believe that she was one of four studio bassists that they used but, she was married and wanted kids, therefore she was unavailable for touring any way.
The album LA Woman , the used Elvis's bass player . He chose cash instead of ,"points" a percent of the gross profits. Financial mistake , maybe.. I may be wrong in all of this but my LA connections say so . ?

Just an interesting tidbit. Ray Manzarek, the keyboard player, used to also play the bass part simultaneously with foot pedals! The Doors didn't have a bass player! he was a musical genius.
No, he didn't. It was Jerry Scheff who came up with the bass line after Ray gave him a few chords of what he had in mind. Many of the bass players hired by the Doors were not credited at all.

I can also send you an interview where Manzarek is asked "Who plays the bass line in your band?" and demonstrates live. Your argument is that they occasionally hired session bass players that didn't get credited. OK fine. My statement is true, yours is not. The Doors had no bass player in their lineup. 4 members. Vocals, guitar, keyboards and drums. Period. The Rolling Stones also worked with many session musicians. Did that make them members of the band? No. Just contributors. "The Doors lacked a bass guitarist (except during recording sessions), so for live performances Manzarek played the bass parts on a Fender Rhodes piano keyboard bass." - Wikipedia
@@delphi-moochymaker62 Wouldn't trust Wikipedia for facts. Ray may have played the bass lines on the Fender in concert but on LA Woman it was definitely Scheff.
@@martintayler23 The Doors used several bass players on their studio albums. Jerry Scheff on this track...Doug Lubahn on their early albums, Leroy Vinnegar on Morrison Hotel. Yes, Ray used the keyboard bass for live gigs but rarely on record.

We were outside and a wash of strangeness invaded me.
I was young but already a big Doors enthusiast.
Purdy sure it was after they had announced Morrison death days before.
Which also had strange affect on me.

Life is meaningless and random - a serial killer could snuff you out in a random horror - and only the love of a woman (or someone, anyway) gives it any meaning . Deep lyrics, and what a funky, magical contribution from Manzarek

The keyboardist is Ray Manzarek. He is commonly admitted to be one of the greats. Ray and Jim are the heart of the Doors.

Jim wrote this after a cross country trip from Florida to California and incorporated those memories into many of his tunes. Such delicate instrumental work

The last song Jim recorded with the band . He went off to France with his girlfriend . He died there just shortly after . That is 1 of my karaoke songs . One night in a restuaunt bar .this guy told me I sounded more like Jim Morrison . I was humble . The guy went to college at Jackson St. in FLA. Jim as a poet and would respite them at the beach where the kids hang out a lot . Jim went on to California .Manzerek was on key board , Robbie krieger 🎸 . Jim was the writer and singer . He played tambourine and other hand held percussion . Forget the drummers name . People are strange . Touch me . my other Doors tune . I imitate Donovan and Niel Diamond the best . Good show guys enjoyed it .
I remember in the late 60's the Doors were also popular because they were different than most rock, being more dark and poetic and Morrison was kinda unpredictable and intense. Fascinating to watch. Radio would always play this on rainy days. Thanks guys.

Actually, there is a series on RUclips, called Behind the Song, (I think) where artists give you the story behind the song. It is utterly fascinating for a music geek like me. You will be too, I guarantee it.
I agree, you really should listen to Roadhouse Blues and my favorite LA Woman. It would be interesting to hear what you guys think. Those two songs are so cool.

Jim was a singer by accident. All he really wanted to be was a Poet (See "An American Prayer"- it was his poems compiled to music by the band after his death in Paris.)

I think of "Whiskey Song" when I think of The Doors. It's my favorite song of theirs. I like this too but this and "Strange People". Literally from memory. And I grew up in the 80's-90's.
I suggest you listen to... all 6 of their albums.

I think Pink Floyd was heavily influenced by The Doors at a certain point ..1971 was the end of The Doors but Pink Floyd took on subject matter style that is very similar to The Doors and they progressed on it through the 70s . .
agree.... once syd left the band, floyd went darker and more blues based. the doors no doubt had a large impact on them.... if jim had lived, I think the doors wouldve expanded into areas in wh/ floyd went sound wise.... by the way, jim was a stated early fan of floyd... I wonder if he ever met syd or roger?

No I don't think he did meet Syd or it never made any publicity if they did meet up...Floyd was also influenced by The Byrds even though they never said they were or it sounds like they were anyways when you listen to Byrds earlier stuff and the album Younger than Yesterday ..Daft Morning on Notorious Byrd Bros album released in January 1968 and Us and Them by Pink Floyd sound very similar ..

I think your right... the band love may have been an influence too w/ their 3rd album... but I come back to the doors the most when I listen to early floyd right after syd & before dark side. early cooper on love it to death, were heavily influenced by the doors.... re syd, not sure if you knew this, but floyd played the whisky in early '68 w/ syd. it was right before he left the band... it seems there may have been a good chance morrison was there. he hung out a lot at the whisky at that time. if so, he may have talked to syd, although syd was in pretty bad mental shape by this point sadly. it would be very interesting to know more about that whisky show & who was in the audience and how well floyd sounded.... i respect floyd a lot, jand like their early work esp...just dont know as much about them as I do the doors. do you have more insight on that whisky show?
there is a saying - the best voices are in the choir but the spotlight belongs to the one that can deliver the message. Jim Morrison is that one.

This song always reminded me of friends who overdosed over the years....the deceptively mellow nature of the song gives the image of slipping into unconsciousness with the lyrics describing an impending and painless demise. That was always enough to tell me not to give the killer on the road a ride. That's a trip best not taken even with the temptations.
bulls eye.... the hitcher is a metaphor indeed for temptation. whether it be violence or self destruction via addiction.... whats cool lyrically is it scales out to also comment on the greater culture.... the road being time. the hitcher & the bad choices the society can take (nam, heroin, violence, manson, bundy etc).... or endure and ride out the storm & find sustained growth, love and family.... morrison was writing & good bye, a warning but also hope for his homeland w/ this song. its his last recorded moment w/ the doors. haunting.

First heard this song when I was in college and it was played many times as well as the album it was on. It is still a fabulous piece of music. Watch The Doors movie. It’ll explain a lot. Lead singer, Jim Morrison, was a fan of Frank Sinatra’s voice. The great keyboardist was Ray Manzarek- he played the bass line you hear with his left hand.
