17 in my mind…. I’ve watched a bunch of your videos… says something right there. Love your attitude and I find myself laughing which is not typical of sailing videos. Subscribed.
This takes me back- I had boats in SoCal marinas, especially Long Beach, for many years, but boatless now. People ask if I miss it, and yeah, I do. Great vid.
Having only just had a survey conducted on a "new to me" boat I had a great chuckle while watching this episode of your boating life. it perfectly summed up the thoughts and emotions swirling around my head. Also gave great talking points for the moments when people ask "but why?" and "how much did you spend?"
Another inspirational chronicle. Only with Christian does your video actually enhance your quality of life and thought. And, how serendipitous that this video is on a purchase! Thanks for the peek at your process. Am in the same "boat" of looking for the next vessel. A good used sailboat is a treasure.
Congrats on the new boat! What a beauty. I have been getting more and more inspired to follow my life long dream of living on a sail boat. Sail where ever I desire (or can afford);) The benefits are many. Thanks for sharing your private world with us. Smooth sailing my friend.
I really like your videos! Thanks for sharing another. I'm looking for the next "Moneypenny" at the moment, I'm going though this same process. I particularly like "I just wont tell anybody!!" Thanks again, congrats on the new toy. Never look back...
Congratulations on the new and bigger vessel. It looks more powerful from the short look we got at it. Does that make sense. Seems like it can take you to more places and do so a tad more safely.
I'm debating between getting an Ericson 38 vs an Ericson 28. Are you happy you made this change? Apart from cost of ownership/maintenance, any disadvantage from going with with the 38 over your old 32?
Yes, that's the idea. But it would be easier if I were 25. Only issue is that the sails are bigger, heavier, and the forces on the equipment in heavy wind get large. Technique is the answer, and knowing limitations.
@@ChristianWilliamsYachting Just curious as I am about to buy, how do you see this after 5 years with the 38'? Having the cash would you skip the 32' and go directly for a 38' or even bigger for singlehanding?
You get this amazing pearl at the end. It doesn't matter the cost or how much time anybody planned. It's about making the damned venture happen in the first place. Everyone can look back and say this or that but I agree with Christian...thats where we've been...who the hell cares...time to shove off!
I do love your videos and especially the commentary...... please keep them coming.PS Did you hold onto your Windvane self steering or are you intending to fit up another one ??
The Sailomat 800 vane should work fine on this boat, too. It's currently in the garage. My wife says she checks on it there from time to time to see if I'll be home for dinner.....
Pretty good instant response from a broker, don't you think? He was joking, and in fact that orange-peel surface won't make much difference for cruising. On the other hand, the previous owner paid the yard $15K for it.....
It was a wisecrack. Actually, the surface isn't a problem, and the stippling is confined to certain areas. Still, for 15 grand you'd expect a smooth bottom, eh?
In Norway,-we have a saying about boat money,- like ONE boat penny is 100£ Just don`t tell anyone ;-) And I hope your surveyor was pulling your (or mine) leg... "better grip in the water" ;-) he he
Good catch--yes, it was a wisecrack. Not a big deal to me, because I hadn't paid $15,000 for that bottom job, as the seller had only a few months before.
Yes, I heard that. $15K Is like 3-4 month sallery in Norway. VERY expensiv !?! Well, she came out nice. You make some unbelievable good videos. Have fun, fair winds and safe travels.
Yes a diesel produces a lot of carbon it's a low RPM in a Burns diesel oil that's the key it's not like gasoline it doesn't have any octane to it so just like if you put oil on a fire you get that big black puffy smoke people don't do that at home do not put oil on a wood burning fire because it will go up quick and if you're not ready for it you will get hurt anyways, diesel engines do not have any spark plugs they combust the diesel under high compression, and the nature of diesel leaves a lot of carbon behind and the oil catches it that's why five minutes later your oil is already black, doesn't mean that it's bad it's means that it's doing its job you checked the viscosity to see if your oil is good or bad the way you do that is when you first see that nice gold and brown oil that's coming out of put it in between your put a little dab in between your fingers and slide it around little bit see how it feels it's nice and slick, then after certain amount of hours you change it of course, and when you change it put some in between your thumb and forefinger again see how it feels, well if it feels same way just slightly different you done a good job that's the way you should do it you don't wait until the oil is worn out, you wait until it has some life left in it so it's still doing its job properly, when you waited too long as when you put it in between your finger and thumb it it doesn't feel like it used to it sorted drags that means it's a viscosity of broke down and you waited too long and you have done harm your engine just a little bit or a whole lot, that's what you don't want to do, ask trustee mechanic how many hours you should wait and then change it on time every time, okay so you travel in your car and you change it every 3000 miles, and then you think most of that was Highway time I was doing 60 miles an hour well it takes 60 minutes in an hour 60 miles an hour is 60 miles so is there you go 60 / 3,000 that's how many hours you should change it in the car well there's your formula figure out how many nautical miles you went do that three thousand miles get the drift, that's how you get your hours and that's how you can go by your hour meter and change your oil that's only if you're using fossil oil if he used some thetic oil it goes a lot farther
Hi Christian: just hapt onto some of your videos and thoroughly enjoy them.....my only question is ...what made you decide on the Ericson 38. I'm currently shopping for a boat. My type of sailing will be similar to yours, mostly solo and open water. Appreciate your input.
I'm used to Ericsons and I know the systems and the characteristics. Not houseboats. Sail well on all points. Quality build. But there are lots of good boats out there....
17 in my mind…. I’ve watched a bunch of your videos… says something right there. Love your attitude and I find myself laughing which is not typical of sailing videos. Subscribed.
Thank you Christian for allowing us to assist you with purchasing Thelonious II. We are here to serve!
I just won't tell anyone how long it took or much it cost.
Great words.
Enjoyed sir!
A good friend once told me, " Everybody doesn't need to know everything."
This takes me back- I had boats in SoCal marinas, especially Long Beach, for many years, but boatless now. People ask if I miss it, and yeah, I do. Great vid.
Christian, I like your attitude about boat ownership.....and the films are great too
I could listen to you talk all day.
Enjoyment doesn't have a price , thanks for the video

the knocking sounded real good
Looks like a great boat.
Nice video, interesting and well narrated.
I also try to talk myself out of any major purchase. It has saved me alot of money over the years.
Outstanding as always...
Thanks for sharing Christian, you tell a good story and it will be interesting to see how the next chapter works out.
slow, deliberate, thoughtful, creative....perfect. ty
I too enjoy your videos, wish they were longer.
He reminds me of Marty Staufer. He has a nice voice and style of speaking.
I really like your videos! Thanks for sharing another. I'm looking for the next "Moneypenny" at the moment, I'm going though this same process. I particularly like "I just wont tell anybody!!" Thanks again, congrats on the new toy. Never look back...
He has great books also and he is on audiable
The only thing I don't like about your videos is their scarcity. Always enjoyable. Keep up the great work.
Congratulations! I always enjoy your perspective. Thanks for sharing,
Matt
PV looks pretty good off your stern. enjoy the new boat.
Always enjoy your videos, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for another great video and congratulations on the new vessel. Punctuated with an enlightening philosophy, as well.
U r1 great teacher n really enjoy ur videos
FANTASTIC job, I relay loved the commentary,
Congratulations on the new and bigger vessel. It looks more powerful from the short look we got at it. Does that make sense. Seems like it can take you to more places and do so a tad more safely.
major props for a Lionel Hampton reference! I attended the Lionel Hampton School of Music at the U of Idaho!
"I just won't tell anybody."
I need to remember that next time a project goes over-budget. Enjoy the new boat.
great video! your voice and choice of words is amazing!!
Love your style.
Love my Islander 38C. Wonderful liveaboard cruiser..
Cant beet a nice Ericson.. Great boats..
Sweet - Congrats!
Once again, a great story, beautifully told
Cheers
I'm new to your channel and I love your narrative.
It was the blue-green upholstery that sold me...
Here i'am looking at at 50 footer as a newbie who has never had a sail boat ! Also looking a catamarans.
That made my day.
Enjoyed Your Video! Thanks
If you buy a used sailboat is it a must or law to have it inspected?
At least where i'm from, by law vessels need to be inspected every year regarding safety and functionality, if approved they're seaworthy
Hampton on The Vibraphone. You’re killing me.
Great stuff
Right on brother
Congratulations on your new boat! Any plans to take her back to Hawaii or similar blue water sailing?
Those Ericsons are sure great.
Nice videos!
Very interesting series of videos :)
I always enjoy your narrative touch. Will she be named the Thelonious as well?
"Thelonious II". Hope you are finished shoveling snow, Landi.
+Christian Williams wouldn't you know, if you wait long enough it all melts away :-)
I enjoy your videos, Christian! Thanks for sharing. Good luck and fair winds on your new boat Thelonious II. she's a beauty.
SV Soleil
I was wondering if you gave up sailing when Thelonious was sold. What do you have planned for Theloniuos II ?
Good, good stuff, Mr. Williams. We must be related.
I'm debating between getting an Ericson 38 vs an Ericson 28. Are you happy you made this change? Apart from cost of ownership/maintenance, any disadvantage from going with with the 38 over your old 32?
Over budget is nobody's biz but yours! She's a beauty. Enjoy! ;D
Have you ever tried AMSOIL for your motor oil, its more expensive but worth it..... Love your Videos
Congrats!
HAHA Jolly good stuff. Have fun with your yacht :)
You are awesome
“I can do all that with my own hands. It probably won’t take very long or cost very much.” Famous last words! Delusional - and welcome to the club.
yes sir, that’s where we are going ! The horizon
"I just wont tell anybody." subbed.
I just wont even ask myself how much ot cost or how long it took..
Wise words indeed
So, how do you remove the engine??
did u say you sailed that little boat across the pacific
ruclips.net/video/28TAdDu5L6U/видео.html
+Pauls PEACE he sailed the smaller (first one) across to Hawaii...
There were a few good words of wisdom snuck into the commentary...
I keep dark secrets on what I spend on my boat repairs and maintenance as well. It is good to know that I am not alone.
Why?
Looks more comfortable than my Jeanneau 1996 SO36.2
Love the videos, thanks for sharing. Just curious, will you be able to single hand the 38 as well? Looks like beautiful sailboat, congratulations!
Yes, that's the idea. But it would be easier if I were 25. Only issue is that the sails are bigger, heavier, and the forces on the equipment in heavy wind get large. Technique is the answer, and knowing limitations.

“They say the two of the happiest moments in a mans life, The day he buys a boat.. and the day he sells it” I’n not sure that applies here.
That is a great looking boat, good luck and maybe you will be able to tell how long it took, Thanks

Grips the water? What's that about?
Pretty good instant response from a broker, don't you think? He was joking, and in fact that orange-peel surface won't make much difference for cruising. On the other hand, the previous owner paid the yard $15K for it.....
A "better grip on the water"? Did I hear him correctly? Why would you want the hull of your boat to have a better grip on the water?
It was a wisecrack. Actually, the surface isn't a problem, and the stippling is confined to certain areas. Still, for 15 grand you'd expect a smooth bottom, eh?
Christian, When I find "The Boat" for my wife and I, we will obviously rename her.... did you do a ceremony to rename...Or just rename her ?
Still the 'Sir Attenborough' of the high seas
WERE THE 32 ?
