@@BestPrinters what happeness if I do not use the Maintenance Box
@@abdfgijkl The excess ink from head cleaning, etc will slowly drip out of your printer. Also your printer may not allow you to print. Rihac sell them for about $15 so they're cheap.
Thanks so much. There's nothing in the user manual to explain what this thing is.

My 970 is still on the original cartridges, this box couldn't be full. Problem is my photo prints have way too much ink slobbered all over them. This printer is seldom used, same as my R3000 and both have the excess ink problem. Bought a head cleaner juice kit but no nipple to put the hose on in order to flush the head clean. Any idea how to get my printers back to printing excellent prints again? Am going after the sponge(s) first. Am about to subscribe and hope to find the answer there somewhere.
I suggest cleaning everything till it is dry, then print multiple pages of photos on plain paper till the images are clear, then use photo paper. The trick with a printer is to print something at least fortnightly just to keep it running ok. Leaving it for extended periods will result in lots of problems. It's better to regularly waste a "throw away print" than throw away the printer after little use. I now know from personal experience.
Check your settings and make sure you don't have thick paper selected for normal paper.
does the xp970 printer have pre-scheduled maintenance? Unlike Epson printers that let you clean it yourself
Sorry I wasn’t able to get to your message. Please create a new comment with the same question if you still need a response. Thank you!
The maintenance box is a throw away item and fills up with ink from head cleaning, etc so the more you use the printer the faster it fills. There's no set time.
Just buy Canon. I had my first PIXMA for probably 10-12 years. No maintenance. No extra parts. I bought Epson when my dinosaur ran out. Nothing but problems and questions with keeping it happy. Prints great. But that whole cleaning and maintenance box thing? I probably printed 10,000’s of pix with my PIXMA paying zero attention to it for one at least 3 year stretch. Unplugged, in the closet. I have my sort of new Epson 970 (new enough it just now wants its care box replaced) in our RV so I can make an RV photo album as we go. I have the new maintenance box and a screwdriver. Hope it works. Meanwhile my new Canon PIXMA has printed probably 200 pictures for me in the last 24 hours without a single whine.
Funny how printers never required these and the all of a sudden Epson decides that you need one in order to keep your printer working. This wouldn't be an excuse for Epson to make more money, would it?
Epson doesnt get any ink money if i throw my printer in the garbage bin due to full ink box which happend to my xp-850
Old inkjet printers had a pad in the bottom for soaking up excess ink from head cleaning, etc but it couldn't be replaced without pulling your printer apart (usually by a repairer for a cost). When it was full you either sent in the printer for repairs or threw it away. Now you can replace the maintenance box and carry on, much better system.
epson does not spent 1 word about that in the manual
Yep
