I went on this hovercraft last year. Good fun for a day trip over to the IOW. My first ever trip though, was on one of the first hovercrafts, way back in the '60's, on a trip out of Ramsgate Harbour. Didn't see much as too much spray ending up on the windows. Then much later, took the car over to France from both Pegwell Bay Hoverport (was nr Ramsgate) and Dover on the big SR.N4. Only real complaint had to be the noise inside. If you do end up going to look/on this Hovercraft, don't stand behind. The grit that gets thrown up as it departs is enough to take your eyes out - didn't do my video camera much good.
I'd been hovering between Ramsgate and Calais in summer 1978, when my parents picked me up in North Wales, where I spent my summer vacation in the PPSC Camp. The hovercraft was much langer, than that one here and it was able to Tage cars with it.
No business it their right mind would operate a service if it wasn’t profitable. Hovertravel have been operating this route since 1965 so it’s obviously well established and successful.
The service runs on the south coast of England between Portsmouth and Ryde on the Isle of Wight. A word of warning; it can be a rather rough ride when the water is choppy. I don't get sea sick easily, but a trip on one of those things once showed me my limits.
I would be nervous if the compressor fails while the vessel is in the water. Anybody know how they deal with a compressor failure or the engines stopping? Even with a life jacket, I'm a very bad swimmer.
AFAIK it has to be able to float with engines off, part of the safety code. So it would be the same as losing engines on a boat - be ready to evacuate if things get worse, otherwise wait for a tow.
As has been said above it can float when not on its cushion of air. The base of craft has watertight compartments allowing it to float. Also its lift is not operated by a compressor. It has large fans which draw in air and create lift which is trapped under the craft by the black rubber skirt.
No Compressor, lift is done by Fans, if everything fails they cannot sink, all they will do is sit down on the water. Then wait till be rescued they can't be towed, too much drag.
One of greatest invention of Great Britain. This invention nation's inventiveness had gone with Britisers' poor work ethics, too much of politicking, lack of loyalty and Patriotism. Worst of all is their competitive political correctness. My God. As a retiree of former English company I feel so sad. God bless 🙏🙏
What is this ship name ? How process / system it move from one place to another ? How much speed in water very interesting men carrier in water way .pls can you write me it . Or can any body write about it ?
£31.50 currently for a return(special deals also available for island residents) , the service can get very busy as it ships workers onto the main land and is also very popular for tourism.
No more expensive than Wightlink’s catamaran service. At least the hovercraft is beach to beach. Wightlink’s catamaran drops you off at the end of Ryde pier which you then have walk down or catch the train. It’s the fastest ferry to the island so if its convenience and speed you’re after then this is it.
Any one else could call off that bluff of his inspection. 1. Failed to check the seats are aecurwd 2. Failed to inspect the other twin blade propeller 3. Failed to inspect the monitors were secured. 4. Failed to inspect steering wheel wobbles or not. Lost goes on, because ehe ain't carrying a checklist.
This isn't "genius" at all, it's the last remaining example in the UK of conked out old, and ruinously carbon-expensive technology. This final vestige of what was thought new and brilliant 60 years ago is engaged in only a very short-hop ferry service across the Solent from he Isle of Wight to a place near Portsmouth. All other hovercraft services were scrapped long ago, and no doubt this one will be soon, too.
Danke für das Video! Vor 40 Jahren habe ich sowas gesehen als ich mit der Fähre nach England fuhr.

I remember taking a hovercraft from UK to France *with a car* in the 70's. Very noisy. Like the Hong Kong to Macau hydrofoil - also very memorable.

Good old SR.N4. Powered by 4 Turbines. No wonder its noisy

I used to travel on the hovercraft between Portsmouth and Ryde on the isle of Wight to get to and from school
Pretty much the safest way to fly that exists.
That walk round is very much like a pre flight check of an aircraft.
Very interesting video! Where does this hovercraft sail? How fast can it sail? It seems to sail as a very short shuttle... Thanks for sharing!
Portsmouth (Southsea) to Ryde Isle of Wight. 10 minute journey.
@@alanr9496 Thank you for answering!
Nice video. Where is this place please.
The mainland terminal is Southsea, Portsmouth it terminates in Ryde on the isle of Wight.

It's a British invention..... nothing more to say 😊
Nice to see they used a BMW Isetta for a cockpit ;-)
xD
Yeah!
Is it cost effective? Didn't look well used by passengers?

Wow very nice naman sarap sumakay Jan❤️❤️❤️❤️
How interesting and it would be great to travel in one. 😮
These hovercraft can perform donuts while carrying a full load of passengers.
Took a similar ride around 1978, while studying at Portsmouth Poly...
😊😊😊😊😊❤
Ho attraversato la manica, un bel ricordo.
I travelled from Calais to Dover in 1975 or 1976 it was marvellous to travel by the hovercraft.
Interessante o overcraft. Que Deus abençoe a todos! 😀👍🇧🇷⛴️🙏
Fantastic!
Memories as a KID 10p haha loved it now it’s double and HOOVERSPEED TO FRANCE
Its not commercially viable due to alleged excessive fuel consumption ?
Would love to enjoy
Travelled Ryde to Portsmouth and back on this service in 2014, think it was about 20 mins each way and not very expensive.
I want a ride with this, which city is?

Every passenger is issued a paddle
They have life rafts and life jackets and it won't just immediately sink if the skirt fails.

Im watching this video and not sure if the hovercraft is still in operations
yes. saw them just now
Me gustaría pasear ❤🎉😢Venezuela 🙏 valencia
Mad to think i life near the only passenger hovercraft left in the world
The maintenance on them must have been massive.
I'm a caulkhead living in London that made me feel quite homesick.
Good's thanks you frof ❤❤❤
Interesting video, a;though some of those checks I would question if they were really necessary 😂
They weren't, they're just done to keep the captain busy.
Woww amazing
Oui mais il est regrettable que cette liaison n'exits plus entre l'Angleterre et la France?,?
Excellent.
Это очень круто 🎉

Super Maschine!!!
isso é muito da hora nota 10 ♥️
Why did you tack on looped motor audio?
Even if the compressor fails , it will descend and float on the surface ,may be water or land.
Very god teknologi

I don't know what's genius about it... loud, expensive, hard to maintain and not so much fun in rough seas.
