Rodney Rogers was part of the select team. Some time after the first game, Rodney told Larry Bird and a bunch of the Dream Team that Larry hadnt made a jump shot since 1984. It was 1992 at that time. When they played the second game, Magic who heard Rogers comment passed the ball to Bird eight straight times. Bird called his shot on Rogers and hit them each time before laying down. Check out the video of Mashburn comment on Bird.
Isaiah would have made the team worse. Several of these players (at least) would not have wanted to play with him and might have turned down the invitation to be on the team if he were on it. And even if they were all there, they have to play together as a TEAM. I think Isaiah would have killed the chemistry they had. He was plenty talented to be on this team, but he was not the right fit.
They already had two GOAT point guards in Magic and Stockton. I don't see how Isaiah (as great as he was) would have helped. As you say, he could have only hurt the team chemistry. I feel a bit badly for Christian Laetner. Through no fault of his own, he became little more than the team mascot. I'll bet he's glad he had that experience, though. The man we all wanted to see on the Dream Team instead was Dominique Wilkins, but he was nursing a serious injury at the time.
@@ContrarianCorner I've seen people mention that Shaq could have been "the college guy" and contributed more than Laetner. That's an interesting possibility. Not like they were lacking at center either though.
@@mikegoodwin2386 Yeah, Shaq is the usual go-to for the "Who should have been the college guy" question. My point was that having _any_ college player on that team was rather ridiculous and really only served to put that guy in an unfair and potentially humiliating situation. I mean, look at the way the pros spoke about him when it came to picking teams for practice. It's like he was the kid on the playground that nobody wanted on their team.
That loss to the college team was probably the best thing that could have happened because we know they went on to dominate the Olympic tournament. I feel you learn more from defeat that you can ever learn from always winning.
My favorite line out of this whole documentary, from Magic: 'You can't get too close to Michael, it's a foul.' 15:50 My second favorite, from Bird, in answer to a post-game question: 17:09
Playing golf can be rough especially of you are walking. The average course is probably like 7 thousand yards so you are walking like 7 miles and not in a straight line on flat ground
The Celtics were pulled off the court early by security in Detroit in 88 because the crowd was about to storm the court (Pistons' home court). They stopped by their locker room to shake hands with the Pistons. Pistons walking off in 1991 at their home court was seen as a sign of bad sportmanship, hence not good for the Olympic Games; it was too fresh in people's memory. Regarding his record and skill Isaiah deserved a place on the Dream Team, but he messed it up for himself - instigator of a dirty play style, yes, against every team, but especially against Bulls and MJ and talking behind Magic's back while he was supposed to be his best friend. Sad thing is that years prior to that during the All Star games when on the court together, MJ and Isaiah had quite a good chemistry as players.
2:38 to be fair, laetner was going to get that facial, but malone pushed him out of the way cause he wanted to be the one to contest it. Mentality was different back in the day.
I think Isaiah definitely deserved to be on the team. They needed someone to do the laundry and fill the water bottles. I couldn’t think of a better person.
Re Golf. I play and Yes, it would be tiring for a 7 footer like David to play a round on a big course in the summer over there. On your feet a lot for 3 or 4 hours and mentally concentrate on 4-6 shots per hole times 18 and then play a basketball game that night. So it is impressive for jordan but he plays a lot and had the energy to do everything.
AMERICA came to a halt when it came to the dream team ( and even more-CRAZY-when nba players were allowed to compete in the Olympics )most americans knew we'd win the gold medal and so did I. LOL. NONE of the olympic games were even close !!! Not one.
In 1992, im not sure Isiah was better than Drexler, Stockton or Mullin. I think even Tim Hardaway had a better case than Isiah. Bird and Magic were retired. So it was a legacy thing for them. Hakeem was the best player not on that team but he wanted to play for Nigeria
I'm a Bird guy...that said: Michael isn't just the most insanely talented individual player I've seen, but he MIND impresses me. Not the competitive aspect, but the wisdom. He knows how to conduct himself as a man and a professional. What a role model.
Isiah Thomas was still a 6itch back then. His personality would've started eroding team cohesion from day one. It wasn't until after he retired that he started out on his own personal redemption tour. One nasty personality can mess up the whole work environment. He couldn't keep a professional attitude back then, so he didn't deserve to be on the team.
Yes I agree with no Thomas, why you had Magic and Stockton as point guards. Plus Jordan could play point and so could Clyde Drexler. 2 centers ( plus Latener) you got Malone and Barkley. 2 guards Jordan, Mullins, Drexler. Then 3's Pippin, Bird it was awesome. I quit watching the NBA in the early 2000 when it changed. Loved the late 70's, 80's and 90's.

I would love to see that video!

Isaiah Thomas was 3 years old and wasn't considered for the dream team cause he could barely walk at the time.
I was wondering why Dominique wasn't on the team! I'm Sorry he was injured and could not be there. He was a great player!
Watching these guys was like watching the Harlem Globetrotters
I agree with that decision.

Bird’s back was very messed up. Larry didn’t practice much.
@5:58 score 54-62, 8 points difference. You can’t honestly believe the Dream Team couldn’t come back from an 8 pt deficit…
I've also heard them say that when they looked like they might stage a comeback, Chuck decided the game was over.
@@mikegoodwin2386
Yep. That would have ruined the point Chuck was trying to make.
@@irishgrl Exactly!
This is the second time I’ve watched this documentary….just like the Magic and Bird documentary……it’s so good!

20:04 $7 a beer isn't that crazy.. but $7 a beer in 92' is about $30 a beer today.
Thomas would have been a cancer on that team. Was he good enough? YES. Was he worthy? NO. So Clyde, a super nice guy, got to go.
Mj gained advantage in practice by having Bird 🐦 on his team lo😅
I agree with the Isaih decision
I agree. It on Isaiah his behavior. I don't feel he deserved it.

I was at that first game in Portland. It was fucking amazing.
Golf is a mentally draining game that can affect you physically.
Poor sportsmanship back then was looked down upon by many people.
And why not?
Is it praised now?
It should be looked down on! lol

I didn’t want isiah on the team. the team dynamics would have been very different if he had been
I think Pippen got Isaiah’s spot.

Larry Legend
🤮
I hope you are being sarcastic.
Gold takes alot of energy because youre standing alllll day. 18 holes is like 4 hours. MJ is playing 36 lol
If want see love.
Just look at larry magic were cloure does not matter.
Black or white. 🤝💪👏👏👏
@17:25 you forgot LARRY 😡
Yea...I noticed that too! 😠

Isaiah wasn't needed that team had all it need they will always be the best team ever to play the game.
Gold is a liw impact sport but they walked 47 holes daily that's 4-5.miles in the hot sun.
Chuck daly set that up intentionally
