  • How to Weld Aluminum Pipe. How I like to weld 6061 Aluminum Pipe, I used 5356 Filler metal.
    this is a video I made on how I like to weld aluminum pipe. I simplify the process for anyone wanting to learn.
    Hopefully this video will shed some light on how to get proper penetration on aluminum.
    for this video I set my TIG up old school. I was running 60 htz for the frequency and 45% dcep cleaning.
    I was running my Alphatig Ahp200x for all the welding. Its a good machine for home use.

    Very nice work; your narration is descriptive and to the point, no guessing required. Seeing it happen as you weld is excellent, it helps make your point about the waiting and the add filler. Thank you for your skilled demonstration.

    Honestly, I almost skipped the video since the start it wasn't filtering out the light but something told me to stick around. I am glad that I did. I have had trouble tig welding aluminum since it doesn't really pool the same way as steel (at least that is the way I feel) and your narration along with seeing it happen in real time helped for sure. I might hop back on the welder soon now!

    Great video man! Learning how to weld and I find myself struggling with piping mostly (working on building a hot side and cold side for my ls build). The inside and different angles really helped me visualize what to look for and understand that it requires good timing. I find as a new welder and being self taught, I’m always worried about burning through my material so sometimes (at least of SS) my welds look cold

    This video is very well presented and I have never seen the inside shots before...very nice. I noticed that you do not quite entirely fill the bevel on either side of the weld. In a real application would this be acceptable? Would it reduce the strength of whatever gauge wall thickness you originally had? Thank you.

But everywhere I look, people say "it's really hard to weld aluminum" like it's damn near impossible. Thanks to your video, I now think it's accessible with some good practice. Maybe in a few years my ideas will become real.

    37 1/2 degree is the proper bevel for pipe heavy wall pipe such as main steam may have a 37/10 bevel on it and I’ve ran the gold track with 5 degree bevel but a 45 degree angle is way to much for a multitude of reasons this is just fyi! Your doing great job

    What type of set up are you running from tungsten to machine?

    • @5thStreetFab
      @5thStreetFab  6 лет назад +5

      Rainman thanks bud! It just takes practice.
      For this I used an Ahp 200x which is a cheap Chinese welder. I set it maxed out on amperage and adjust with the pedal as I weld. My frequency was at 60hrtz and my cleaning was at 45% DCEP. I used 2% lanthanated tungsten and I had a #7 gas lens. The only reason I had a gas lens was so I could stick the tungsten out real far so you could see it on the video.

    I love your videos! Can you make a video about how to get clear vision when welding. Best lenses, lighting setup , etc... I struggle to see the puddle a lot. Although my vision isn't terrible, I do wear glasses, so that might have something to do with it. How to avoid reflections inside the helmet. Any tips would be helpful.

    • @5thStreetFab
      @5thStreetFab  6 лет назад

      Marcel LeMay I've never had that problem. I usually use a shade 12 or 13 and get extremely close to what I'm welding. If you have light reflecting in under your hood, a lot of guys I work with take the leather cuffs off of old gloves and attach them like a beard to shield the glare and also a section that covers the top of the head.

    There seems to be a lot of people in welding aluminum. If my memory serves me right, from when I worked in a ship yard, aluminum will shrink when welded. If you measured a pipe length, by the it was welded it could wind up shorter than you wanted. Especially if there were multiple welds.

    I got my Alphatig 200X a little more than a month ago, love it. Glad to see someone using one, although I'm not to the skill level as you(Yet!). I know some machines cleaning settings are reversed, when you mention your setting, let's say 35%, is that the dial setting, or the actual percentage cleaning/penetration? As an example, 35% on AHP is equivalent to 65% on some other brands.
    Just watched a few of your videos, already helping me to learn. I like the way you explain things, some youtubers just showcase their skill without saying how they do it. Keep putting them out.

    • @5thStreetFab
      @5thStreetFab  6 лет назад

      I mean on the actual dial on the ahp. So on ahp it shows DCEP and on others they show DCEN. You'll be able to tell if you have to much if your tungsten starts to melt. With the ahp with 100% argon you should need thicker than a 3/32 tungsten at 200 amps. And thank you for watching!
