Hello Tom! Perhaps you remember me from your previous videos and comments. Here is my short story: after studying literature for the last 5 years, I am now studying literature and library studies (masters), which I intend to supplement with a masters in visual communication (design). However, I need coaching in form of portfolio advice. I have ample time for this and I will contact you next year, most likely in July. I am willing to pay for your time and advice. I will contact you then by e-mail. Thank you for reading. JH
I really like the idea of portfolio critique series. We have recently set up a company, created a website with portfolio and everything, tried online marketing (Facebook and Google) but we still struggle to find new clients.
You’re the best Graphic Designer Mentor I’ve ever got. Your advices and conrents bring a lot to me and surely to the rest of the community too. Thank you very much🙏🏾
Would really appreciate the portfolio critique and the idea of promoting your business on social. Also thank you Satori for all the effort and info you put in your videos.
I agree with you.. it seems you are talking about design service like it's selling pizza. You can't raise your price without the experience as a professional and having the track record of completed work. In my experience people will hire you for a few reasons: 1. you are actually good at something (like ideation only, production of files, editorial design, etc) and 2. they like you as a person or how you think. It's more important in my view to have a way of doing things, ie. a design process that lets the clients know you are systematic in your approach (to some degree). A solid design process will make you fit in a studio setting and as a freelancer (because you clients will trust your process/logical sequence of steps to execute a project).
all these stock video clips are so distracting and substrac instead of adding to your posts. the captioned moments and when you appear on screen are a lot more engaging (i personally would not use my entire ae library for captions, but thats more of personal preference for consistency) Fab content!
Your video is on point and certainly valid but there is also the supply and demand element that places artists under the budget microscope. As a native New Yorker I have enjoyed decades of excellent pay for photography, video and graphics. But much of that changed in the last ten years because with the advent of digital photography, many big budget projects have been scaled to the point that only amateurs would take the assignments. Move away from a big commercial market and it gets extremely worse. Move abroad to a poorer country and what I used to make per day was literally someone's yearly salary. Honestly, no countries named please. Add to this the down right theft of intellectual property. Will Smith, Oprah and President Obama have no idea how many times their faves have been adorned on beauty salons and barbershops. For many uncreative people, the internet is seen as a candy store for stealing work. And many art directors (title used very loosely) either don't care if the work is poor because they saved money or simply aren't proficient enough to know the difference. The industry is in a free fall.
Yes, I’d like to learn more about promotion 😃 I think my work is good also very niche, but I’m just lack of skill about promoting my work 😅😅 thx you Tom!
What program do you use to make motion graphics? I’ve used photoshop and illustrator for years, and I’ve used premiere quite a bit, but I don’t have much experience with motion graphics.
quick question, My name is Renardo Sibble. An undergraduate in graphic design, I have a lot of interest in motion graphics, Could I ask you what software you use for your motion graphics?
This was more like mini-podcast. Great, nonetheless. Also, keep the design critique alive. Every designer needs critique and it helps them be the best in their craft.
Portfolio critique video is a must! As you say we have to show our work to mentor and receive objective critique is a life saver. I'd like you to criticize my last project. How can i sumbit it to you? :)
Designing is one skill set and promotion is another, perhaps teaming up would help a lot of young designers. You promote me and I design your business "stuff".
haha that would be a good idea. These days there are freelance sites that do have some good marketing people if you look hard enough. Have a great weekend buddy
Simply designers, are not designers anymore. They follow instructions, brand guidelines, and artworking if you have 30% of creative design-orientated work this is very good. 70% is reproduction, production, and making happy your managers and employers, and clients. This is reality. After working for large corporate clients, or small businesses, the problem is very the same. Luck of education, understanding of the role of designers in society. It has NOTHING to do with your portfolio. Contacts, recommendations, etc far more influential on your professional carrier. working 20+ years in the industry, from advertising, branding, to corporate huge names. When I see untalented, struggling, and really basic and average designers striving in agencies and offices for 40K a year, I wonder, what's happening? Are these employers, and clients are so happy with this? Yes, they are very happy to have "Yes, yes" designers.
yes and no. It is partly down to portfolio. I've mentioned many times on this channel what a graphic designer is. It's a person who sells visual communication that enables a business or entity to gain something. It less an art form and more of a science. In this video, I am referring to people who operate online as designers, and not part of a team or agency. Regardless, a portfolio of work is still required and necessary wherever you go.
There will be more 'before and after' content next week :)

This is a very valid experience. However I'm talking mainly from working online, and not at a physical placement within a design agency or team.
The info here are super great 👍.
Happy to hear that :D
@@SatoriGraphics your videos are always super beautiful, what software do you use to make these videos? I'll appreciate your response.
