I really identify with this video man!!! I was a kid that grew up in the middle of a corn field and was I big fish in a little pond. I moved all over the USA chasing that dream. By the time I got into the music industry the scene I loved was dying out and I really didn't like the music business and I wasn't as good of a player as the top professionals I admired the most. I'm 50 now and dealing with my dreams of being a professional musician have passed me by. BUT, I'm back to practicing 4 hours a night and working of my own music/album.. AND I've passed the torch to my son who is truly a unique musician. Thank you for the humility sir, just subbed to your channel
I was turned on to a book named "7 Kinds of Smart." It was illuminating towards valuing the smarts others can supply to you. It was also inspiring to discover talents you may have that are to be shared. Music smarts is one of the 7. Another is spatial intelligence. Lastly, an old Hebrew saying: "Who is the smartest? The one who learns from all others."
I find these types of videos much more valuable than gear shootouts and mixing techniques. I think it’s funny that so many folks outside the music industry think top performing artists create 12 songs in a row during sporadic 12 4 hour sessions, during short breaks from a never ending party, and just enjoy continued, effortless success.
Thanks! I got to the point where I don't discuss my work with family because they just don't understand. I know they just think I'm crazy but maybe I am just a little bit to do all this ha ha!
It’s always a pleasure to listen to the stories told by Billy. There’s no ‘conceit between the lines’ or implicit self-celebration. And there’s always something to learn.
love what you're doing, man. new viewer, i'll try to catch up some and watch for new stuff. something i would add to what you've said here (very well) is relatively very few people at any talent level will experience the kind of epic career success that top artists achieved in the past. some of that has to do with the kind of music being created, and how it's being created, and some of it has to do with the nature of the industry compared to what it used to be. i'm definitely no expert on the industry but most writing musicians, even dedicated and talented ones, aren't and never will be. so the point i'm finally getting around to is that industry/career success is not a measure of the value of your art. the process of creating, both the songs themselves and recordings of them, is at the most basic level rewarding in its own right. if the only motivation to create it is industry/career success, the art is reduced to product and service and we've missed the point. i hope *everyone* that makes art, good or bad, never stops. the world is a better place when artists make art for art's sake! CHEERS, brutha!
Tried to leave a comment last week but evidently it never loaded properly or something. Just wanted to say what a great video this is. Not just the story, which is fascinating, but the video editing and the story-telling. Really good stuff and lots to think about regarding the journey that creative people have to take and the lessons that can be learned along the way. Very authentic. Thanks for a great video!
We all start out believing we know everything and we don't start learning until we accept that we know nothing. Even after more than 6 decades on the planet, I still understand that what I have learned is a single grain of sand on the beach of knowledge.
that comment about burning your clothes and being the artist all the time rings so true today more than ever when persona is as much of the art as the music in the social media age. i come from a "musical" rock/metal background myself and started hanging around hip hop studio sessions and felt...embarrassingly arrogant. until i realized the same thing. the mentality too art and creativity and success was totally different and even MORE VALID than what i previously thought. This was in like 03-04, and i haven't looked back. And once artists like Kanye West came and totally broke the ceiling off of what Hip Hop is and what it's supposed to be like, it became clear that i had it all wrong. not that other genres aren't great, but the state of mind in hip hop has been so forward moving and including so many built in concepts like "image" that seemed arbitrary and very very inauthentic in rock post early 90's. Many Hip Hop producers DO know theory, they just use it differently.
Absolutely awesome! As I said before, stories like this are what give strength and motivation to those who work with or make music, especially independent bands like ours! Thank you so much for sharing it with us, Billy! Sending good vibes from Brazil! 👁️🔥👁️🇧🇷🤘🇺🇸
Wait! I’m always the dumbest one in your livestreams I still don’t know what software to pick because I forgot the name of it - but somehow I’ve still got the tune of a cello part for this song I wrote a year ago that I still need to DOOOO
I loved where the guy told the musicians to throw out their street clothes and wear nothing but their stage clothes. If they’re gonna be serious then LIVE the life! Like the movie where Sandra Bullock was an FBI agent: “Aren’t you THE JOB?” “Yes, I am THE JOB!” Be the job! Excellent
I am a fool...I know what I know...but I did to many foolishness mistakes. Knowing this...make a change. I've had the chance to make a better choice...make new choices if your stuck...things will shift. Ty
This isn't just a music thing. I've been at the same company for the past 5 years. The past 2, I've been the smartest in the room (and I'm not actually that smart). As a result I've been bored out of my mind and lack motivation in many areas as a result.
That’s beautiful but Beato saying music is bad because of drum machines is ridiculous. Ok ok, he’s successful but being successful doesn’t mean you’re right about half the things you say or think. Survivorship bias. That said, I acknowledge that I don’t know everything either. We just can’t blindly worship those with worldly success.
Oh.... I totally disagree with him on that and had thought about making a rebuttal video about that, just been too busy with sessions. And you are right, a lot of people think that if someone is successful that they are smart about everything - so wrong. As much as I respect Rick for his hard work and music theory knowledge, we'd get into arguments about music and such. He also had a video recently about why bands are going away (I think this is different from the one you're talking about) and I think he's only looking at it from the view point of a educated guitarist where I'm more like most other music creators these days. Anyway..... no matter how much success and fame you have you're still haunted by the same ghosts that always haunted you. Thanks for watching and commenting! Hope you come back.

Thank you! Great that you're creating again!
I've heard it said by smarter people than me, "If you're the smartest person in the room, you're in the wrong room".
I was turned on to a book named "7 Kinds of Smart." It was illuminating towards valuing the smarts others can supply to you. It was also inspiring to discover talents you may have that are to be shared.

Man, this video should be mandatory viewing for every person under the age of 30.
Hey that’s me!
You’re a cool guy, Billy, and I’m really glad to have found your content. I find you very inspirational in a very non b.s. way.
Thank you!

Great point! There was a point when American Idol first came out where I thought "Is music supposed to be a competition?"
right?! and which is "better", the apple or the orange? there's another, better type of show idea lurking in your comment...
Nothing but honesty ❤ I’m learning soon as I saw one video there’s not many like you sir, in fact there’s none,
Hell Ya!!! Love the info rant at 6:22❤

Rick Beato: He was in Billionaire!
I loved where the guy told the musicians to throw out their street clothes and wear nothing but their stage clothes. If they’re gonna be serious then LIVE the life!

What is the frequency chart Rick talked about??? How about a show on that???
What did you learn from the frequency chart? I'm really curious... Thx in advance!
It's a lot to explain. I should probably do a video about it.
