This isn’t actually an idle adjustment. This is your throttle stop adjustment. The ECU adjusts the idle to a certain RPM programmed at the factory, around 800, give or take. At least, this is the case with my 1996 Camry LE. If you adjust this screw, you are messing with the critical relationship between the TPS, throttle stop adjustment, and the ECU. I adjusted this screw to stop the infamous rumble that many old 5SFEs produce, even after replacing all of the engine mounts and transmission mount. All it did was bring my MPG down to a horrendous 10 MPG average, as opposed to 22 MPG average with factory adjustment. Plus, the ECU kept lowering my idle no matter how I adjusted the throttle stop and TPS anyway! In conclusion, leave this screw alone. Deal with the rumble. Your wallet and catalytic converters will thank you.
Agreed, agreed. These screws should be left at factory spec since the engine ECU is responsible for managing idle speed on these vehicles. However... if the two screws have been monkeyed with at some point, it would be nice to know where they should be set back to, approximately! (Guess I'll keep looking.)
@@ctgriffi3899 The throttle stop screw serves one purpose: to keep the throttle plate from resting against the inside of the intake. All you have to do is back off the nut, back off the screw until the throttle is completely closed and the screw is not touching the throttle stop. Then, turn the set screw clockwise until it just touches the stop. Finally, give the screw another quarter/half of a turn and, while holding the position of the screw, tighten the nut. Done. Edit: should note that it is easiest to make this adjustment with the throttle body removed from the engine. I hope this helps!
nice video, this is what i was looking for. but not sure if it will solve my problem. idle is ok when in park, sputters a lot when i put it in drive, ( shakes the whole car) almost always dies when in gear. but when i put it back in park it is ok. does not idle over 1000 . what is a good idle when in park and what is a good idle when in gear but on the brake? thanks in advance
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!! I don't have a repair manual for my wifes 1991 Toyota Camry V6 and the idle only got worse for the past year or so. This morning it affected performance so much that I had a hard time getting the car to accelerate off the line and climbing a hill. Luckily I found your video after I got home and within 5 minutes had the idle back down! Back to normal now. Waiting for the engine to cool down to see if the high idle condition returns. Will let you know how it goes. Again, thank you so much!
Felix, sounds like you need a fuel filter change. They are easy to, but takes time. The filter is under the air filter. Videos for that too. Gaurantee. Most people never! change the fuel filter? :( Once a year, and be prepared for mud.
Thanks for the tip. I'm having a similar problem to Felix. It shutters when at idle and put into drive. Apart from that it idles and drives fine although sometime I can feel surging when cold.
Yes, it has an IAC. The IAC has a limited amount of control though, the throttle stop screw can be such that the IAC hits it's mechanical limit and the throttle is either too open or too closed. There is also a Power Steering Idle Up Control Valve, which raises the idle when the steering is operated, and an Air Conditioning Idle Up Control Valve, which raises the idle when the AC compressor is engaged. All three valve are seperate assemblies on these engines.
Thank you, I have 19190 Camry idle speed up and down took it to shop he replace a couple of items but also turned the idle way up so Im going ot see if I can catch someone charging my mom 98 yr old $400 to set the idle up so the fluctuation happens so fast we cant here it, Thank you for locating the adjust screw I will find out in the morning if he rplaced BS parts,,,
I have a 1996 4runner 5vz fe 3.4L and have a problem with the idle to low , runs fine in the but went I come to a stop it shuts down an I have to start the car again and it is worst wen I use the A/C . I changed the: fuel filter, pcv valve, idle control valve and clean the throttle body and i still low idle , I will try to do wha you explain in the video , now I remember my engine (5vz fe) have the same set up like yours in the idle part . .. Thanks 👍
People please don’t replace IACV or throttle body go to this for high idle issues . I replaced the iacv 140 dollars with my employee discount. Retails around 300 but the issue the whole time was the screw which fixed my high idle at 1300 rpms at warm up. Now idles around 700-900
My 99 camry idles at 1,600 right at cold start-up and I want to lower the cold start throttle setting...otherwise, when warm, she idles and runs just fine. So adjusting this screw can fix this?
Pirate Labs at cold start it’s fine for it to idle at 1600 if your idle comes down to around 650-800 at operating temp don’t mess with the idle screw. My issue was it was idling at 1200 at operating temp which is not the specifications for the tacoma

@@jasonpeachrick2037 Good word, thanks for clarifying.
Now you gotta re adjust the tps to the new idle speed. If you wanna do it completely right, that is

Felix Valenzuela I'm a little late but your throttle position sensor may be going bad

Do you know the SIZE of the screw? The thread count, etc. ?
Thanks!

I love your name!! Gary Hawkes

This video solved my stalling low idle issue on my 5sfe 01 toyota camry, Thanks
thats the throttle stop screw, you should never touch it. The ecu sets the idle rpm automaticly.
correct me if im wrong

This is correct.
At last, someone can explain how it is. thanks man
very helpful video thanks a lot good job,big help, this really helped ,,
Do you think this would fix my car, it starts up and just idles at 3,000 RPM
Simple usefull info love it

Did it hold up? I just did the adjustment and am waiting for the engine to cool down.
Thank you so much 🤧

can anyone tell me what's the normle idle to this dam car
750-900
omg thank u iv bin look for the answer everywere
To get to the idle screw is a pain in the you know what.
I know how can i reach it
Use a flexible socket
I used an 8mm open end wrench, then turned the screw by hand.
Thanks helped me fix up my cousins car
hi i'm having surging idle after cleaning out my iac. before this i was having stalling cold starts.. it's driving me nuts!!
what could cause the diaphragm to open and close while idling and sometimes it just stays normal?
Good job, Bro. Thanks from Aussie.
Is it the same 2000 toyota camry 5sfe?
Can you spell shoplight ?
Там проста шпиндиль сломался
very helpful thanks
thankyou,,sr.
