Just shows what a true photographer can do with this camera system, unlike the the casual tech RUclipsrs.
It's amazing how much the consumer facing smartphone reviewers loathe Sony's manual mode.
Most of the RUclipsrs are idiots imho. I swear they act as if only iphones exist and that that is the ONLY way/approach to smartphone cameras. Not to mention how little they seem to actually know about cameras and photography in general. I actually have a higher opinion of people in general. As in I don't think the average person is mentally deficient as they seem to. I think anyone can learn how to use a manual centered pro mode.
@@Sabundy Well, the truth is, 99% of photos taken on smartphones are taken in Auto mode.
Well the truth is most photos by consumers are shot in auto or basic very rarely at Pro or manual.
Most photographers likely buy a better camera like a Mirrorless or point and shoot to have a bigger sensor.
If sony ever wants to revolutionize the smartphone industry just like what they did before, they need to innovate. But then again, that's a hard task since there is little to no advancement to tech in smartphones rather than faster CPUs, More RAM, Better GPUs and camera tech has already been perfected they only add more cameras now and add more software features. There is very rarely new to smartphones.
I do like Sony smartphones being the only one that can double as a hdmi monitor to cameras, but not everyone needs that feature.

Thank you for the hands-on review, from a photographer's perspective, Ted. Also, great to see more RUclips content creators from the DFW Metroplex. The question for myself is, how committed is Sony to this line, as far as updates, upgrades, etc.
I am super curious about this phone's cinematic video recording capabilities such as what I have found super incredible with the iPhone 12 Pro Max and unlocking its bit per second rate with Filmic Pro. Maybe this phone could allow us to deviate from our large and heavy traditional setup when mobility is a top priority along with quality. Love watching your videos man!

Been looking forward to this! I hope you take a look at some other flagship phones with interesting camera hardware, like the Mi 11 Ultra, Oppo Find X3 Pro or the Vivo X60 Pro+, although I realize they might not be as easily available in the US.
Just get a OnePlus 9 Pro instead of an Oppo Find X3 Pro. Very similar overall. Just without microscope camera.
Basically the only opinion on this that actually matter.
@Oliver Lundström I mean there are actually quite a lot of reviewers taking this phone seriously, Juan Bagnell being long time leader in actually honestly reviewing phones for their features, not for how many views the video generates. Also Linus did and surprisingly positive wiev on Short Circuit. But seeing MKBHD and his 15 minutes of nitpicking the smallest of things and ridiculing Sony for giving people actual functionality was just laughable. Unfortunately these so called "techtubers" are shaping public opinion the most.
@@jankubat2694 oh I've got quite the battle going in the thread of the MKBHD review video. It's pretty sad. It's all "I'm an enthusiast but I just want to take a picture and for it to look good, Sony sucks!!!!"
@@chetlyp it is somewhat painfully funny to watch MKBHD, he prides himself in shooting on Blad, goes even so far as putting Makina 67 as a prop in his videos, yet when someone asks him to work for his images, it is taken as a fault, because "the average consumer" is incompetent retard. Yet you can clearly see what you can get, when you can take a photo (the examples shown in this video), and when you dont (MKBHD). And it was the same with the last gen of xperia phones. When you know how to take photo, Sony is in the league of its own really. The only problem of this phone is that most people don't want to learn how to operate their devices, and they will blame the manufacturer, because Apple and Samsung does everything for them for somewhat mediocre results (I mean just see the blind tests, Apple can't pass bloody Poco when you compare those two).

@@AmirulMokhris I do understand that the absolute majority of users will prefer more automated processes. Camerawise there will allways be more demand for point n shoot than for manual camera. On the other hand through Sony added the basic mode, and the auto mode is still there. So the question really is, how much of the automation you want? Do you want the phone to make all the decisions for you in single tap, risking the photo will be literally unuseable (apple, samsung...), or are you rolling to get 90% there and later tap "auto" in Lightroom?
Marqes keep cabling this an "enthusiast" phone when it is just phone, it has no enthusiast features at all, it just simply doesnt follow the trend of removing functionality from premium devices. And Juan Bagnell did sum this up perfectly. Imagine presenting iPhone in any other industry... Introducing the new apple car we removed the air intake, but you can buy an intake adapter. That is a different conversation whatsoever.
Reviewers keep faulting Sony for a difficult to use camera while using the most difficult to use device on earth, the RED camera. They keep faulting their black of skill for bad images (yes, tahat is the argument, nobody want a learning curve attached to their device anymore) when you can clearly observe and objectively asses that Sony has currently the best smartphone camera system in production.
I'm seriously interested in getting one of these for 2 main reasons. The camera system (of course) and the High Res Audio DAC since I'm also into audiophile music listening. I would love for you to cover some insights on the portait possibilities with this, especially using the 70-105mm lens(es). I'm glad that you also mention the low-light capabilities as a good thing, I've seen other reviewers saying, they're not that impressed with the cameras... Which is why I kinda shyed away at first. It is a kinda huge investment, since the phone's price is rather steep. Anyway, thanks for this short overview, looking forward to the full review! Have a great summer! #cheers

I really like to get this phone but from the available reviews, I see images are too soft and also when there is bright background everything is over blown, and HDR seems to have no effect. I am excited for your full review and hope you can talk about these issues I mentioned in detail. Thx
I can solve those issue for you right now. Download gcak instead of using the professional Sony app. It does everything for you. And since the sensor is the same as that found in the s21 and s20 ultra, the photos should be to your liking. Other than that, I'd say learn to use the control of the Sony camera app and you'll get similar or better results.
@@chetlyp Thanks for your reply. I am Sony Alpha user for quite sometime and very well aware of the tweaks I can do to get better shots. Since we don't use pro mode for every occasion, photos being soft and HDR issue can be problematic. Thanks for suggesting gcam though.
@@srsgonu lol, no problem. Also I'd take the soft opinions with a grain of salt at this point. All the photos I've seen from professional photographers don't look soft at all. Like at all. The HDR issues were there tho.

From what i have seen so far on you tube reviews of the Xperia 1 iii is a mixed bag . But you video is nice . And good to see that you are among the few you tubers that make good and detailed reviews . I have ordered mine already on manday . Man keep up the good work and i hope the you review of the Xperia 1 iii soone .
I'd really like to know what you can make out of photos in raw format. Most youtubers tend to neglect this option but for me it would be THE criteria for this phone. Ideally a side by side comparison would be great (basic mode vs raw unedited vs raw edited). If you could share the raw files it would be really great. Thanks!
I would love to hear how this camera system can compare to the S21 Ultra and your opinion on which phone a normal user (non-photographer) should buy. I love the Sony Xperia 1 III but the complexity of using the camera to get good shots is the only thing holding me back.
I appreciate that I can finally get to see how the cinema Pro app records with No LUT. There is an app called 24fps, colour science on this one might be interesting to see. I'm waiting for your low light and portrait shots🔥keep it up I love your genuine work of Art. ✨ It would be nice to compare the highlight rolloff against a Sony Alpha camera too! Just to make people realise why Xperia blows out the highlights. It's just a "purist/pro" thing even high end cameras have. Every camera blows out highlights at some point. Phones have a sort of exposure bracketing/stacking. So it's not sony's fault if Xperia follows the Sony Alpha camera picture processing algorithm in my opinion.
I have the 1 II. The 1 III looks super nice. I'm jealous of the 120Hz display, but gonna hold out for the 5th or 6th generation.
I understand i have the Xperia 1 and i held out for the 1iii for an even better upgrade from the 1ii. I cant wait i ordered it but it still takes 5 weeks to get here 🤕
ALMOST a perfect phone. But there's 1 feature missing... A GoPro style mini LCD on the back so you can frame and take selfie pics/videos using the main cameras. Only one phone seems to have this feature so far. I'd love to see it on more models! Great presentation style btw!
Thanks for introducing me to this phone. I am looking for a second phone primarily for using as a camera. Considering the Samsung S21 Ultra 5G because of the 108mp but I know all megapixels aren't created equal and the sensor is more likely the determining factor for me. Looking forward to your complete review of this camera phone. Currently I'm using an iphone 11 pro max.
I'm switching from 11 pro max to this sony phone. Pretty excited
The biggest disappointment for me with the xperia 1 II was the inability to access the cinema pro app quickly using the shutter button. This often restricted my in the moment video shooting to default camera app, and while in a pinch it will work. The stock app lacks any control over frame rate and shutter angle making it really difficult to mix its footage with footage shot with the cinema pro app. I really think they need to either allow one to access the cinema pro app through the default camera app, like they do with the photo pro app, or they need to give a few extra footage controls to the default app so it can function more effectively in a spontaneous moment.
PLEASE show some portrait samples using the 70mm and 105mm. It is extremely disappointing that every reviewer treats those lenses as purely zoom lenses. I wanna know if you can get a proper subject separation using those two lenses despite the small sensor.

It would be interesting to see a small video of yours of how you can use video cameras, since you can't change from one to the other. Understand a professional like you, can take advantage of the weak sides of sony. I like this challenge

I'd like to hear more about the HDMI input monitor functionality. None of the tubers seem to even realize that functionality is there and I'd like to know how well it works. Like are there adjustable zebras, focus peaking, ect. Has that functionality improved since the Xperia Pro? How about picture profiles? Can the video record in HLG or some version of SLOG? That kinda stuff would be cool to see in a video. Thx.
Would you say it's better to get this phone as a start into photography and videography or to get a Lumix GX85/80? Been waiting for this video, very intriguing phone.
Of course get a proper camera instead. This is also a great option for beginners, but it's just a smartphone sensor. You won't get as much flexibility as you would on proper cameras despite the amount of controls this one has, which is apparently still more than almost every other phones, and if you really just need a camera and not a phone, then you may consider getting an actual camera instead.

Although Android is terrible, I have to say that I really like this phone. I do have some questions, probably the same ones as most people:
1. Is the sensor on the zoom the same size as the others? I'm assuming that it isn't.
2. Can you show 1:1 crops from this phone compared to the recent iPhones?
3. Is it made in Japan? I believe Sharp makes their Aquos phones in Japan.
BTW Hz is always pronounced 'Hertz', and never 'Hert'. So, one Hertz, two Hertz, a million Hertz, half a Hertz.

There is a discrepancy on display brightness among ordinary reviewers. I would love to hear it from you how it is compared to Xperia 1 II or to other phones, in terms of technical brightness and the experience when you do street photography in daylight. Thanks!
The official Sony product page lists that it can "Use as high-quality external monitor7 and live stream30 from your camera"; can you shed some light on how that works?
In addition: can we shoot S-Log3/S.Gamut3 from the internal cameras in 10-bit?
You can use a usb to hdmi to use it same way Xperia Pro.
But not all features of Pro are available for 1iii.
Phone is gonna be just a EVF, you cant record from the 📷 and save inside the phone like real monitor.

I'm confused, what does ip65/68 certified mean? The second number should denote water resistance, and there is a huge difference between 5 and 8.. 1:18
is ip68 .
find the Wiki page for more details but ip65/68 means Dust-tight (6), Water jets (5) and Immersion 1m or more depth (8) resistant. Immersion resistant does not stack with splash resistant so the 65 is also necessary to indicate everything intended, the / means "and" not "or"
@@7654321220 Yes but ipx8 would imply ipx7 and ipx6 being covered anyway.. so the device can't be both ip65 and ip68 certified. that would basically mean it's ip68.
@@cankoklu Actually no, IPx6 is about strong water jet and it's different from immersion resistant. ipx8 only also imply IPx7 not IPx6. So IP65/68 means it covers IP6x, IPx1 to IPx5, IPx7 and IPx8, basically everything except IPx6 and stronger.

Thanks for this. I'm waiting for it to drop on Best Buy and will pre-order there to upgrade from my Xperia 1 MK1.
When you do the real review, can you please check the quality of the stereo speakers? That's one thing I really want improved compared to my phone. There is no bass on MK1 and the sound is quite weak compared to the iPhone or Galaxy S21 Ultra.
Also, 120Hz is not as important to me, so if you could check the battery life at 60Hz? Battery is another weak point of MK1.
I have the FX6 as well and curious about the connectivity options, but that's more of a niche thing.

Kindly test the camera features and strength, since most reviews only try to compare basic image capture. There are special features on the camera apps that wasn't used, so it feels a little wasted.

Does the flash act like a normal on camera flash? Or is it like most cellphone flashes that light up the scene for longer? I ask because I'm interested in getting that flash low shutter speed look in low light.

i am very confused. i have been seeing other reviews of the phone and they say that the low light performance for photos and videos is very bad compared to other phones. I have had many xperia phones but i gave up on Sony after buying the XZ because they have been historically terrible with camera phone quality (Z1, Z2, Z3, Z5, XZ.)
It would be great to see a camera comparison between the 1ii and the 1 iii.
Main difference in quality is 70mm.
The other two , difference is small.
I'm assume you'd be doing a camera review so I'd appreciate in depth comparisons between other phones with good camera systems, and your take on the fact that the Xperia 1 III doesn't have the greatest HDR or sharpness
There are 3 HDR modes in the photo Pro app I think. Hopefully he will do an HDR mode comparison if he sees this comment

Sony’s side buttons always give me trouble to put on tripod or gimbal. Hate it!
Hopefully, Sony can add a variable refresh rate at some point with an update. I really like the camera system but battery life is very important to me. I need a capable phone that can last me an entire day on a full charge.

Not true. His video covered too basic stuff..the camera output are more realistic and true to life. Flagships like Samsung are too overexposed and oversaturated from what I see. I'm using Samsung I know the pictures quality sometimes get too artificial colour oversaturated. In low light and night shots, Sony would perform better in Manual Pro Mode, its simply because more natural and real. Night mode nowadays just unrealistic and the shots are too artificial..AI aren't great, certain areas are bright but you won't notice in real time, because it is not sharp and detailed for the brighter night shots.

Most reviewers state the camera is awful (low light photos suck compared to Samsung). I have watched 2 reviews by professional photographers and the love the camera (excellent Low Light photos). Very strange, in any case I love Sony phones
The software and control is cool and all but does it actually perform better compared to something like the google pixel or maybe something like the OnePlus 9 Pro

Yep! Sony's own Venice CS profile in RAW, IIRC.

Question: Is the burst mode jpg only, or does it also work with raw images?
20fps is only jpeg.
It does 60 AF/AE like A9.
Raw is too much for the phone to perform while doing all this.
I think it's snapdragon problem, like reason why xperia 1 ii can't do 120hz with 4k
@@argacc20417 the kernel does support it but it's underdeveloped as a feature. On the Reddit, it is actually seen running in 120hz mode from hidden files.
It's more of a battery/ efficiency/ lack of time reason rather than power since the phone runs in FHD+ and only kicks in 4k during movies and pictures.
But if you could change to a slower burst mode, like something between 5 and 10fps and get raw images, that would be great.

best not hold your breath, the screen is gonna absolutely drain it, it'll probably be similar to the last generation though so about a day if you're not too crazy with it

Yes. Hybrid Log Gamma.
Basic mode does 30fps.
Cinema Pro : only 24mm can do 60 and 120fps
Also it has 24 and 25fps options.
