Though instant ramen is often demonized in the health and nutrition community, the absolute categorization of “healthy” or “unhealthy” foods is not often helpful, especially for those who may only be able to afford processed convenience foods like instant noodles. Instead of avoiding these foods altogether, let’s think about what we can add to each meal to make it more nutritious and satisfying! Since instant noodles already provide carbohydrates and flavor, it would help to add more vegetables (spinach, shredded carrots, green onions), protein (eggs, edamame), and texture (nori, sesame seeds). Always remember to focus on what to add to, not what to subtract from, your meals! A few notes: - If you need to limit sodium for medical reasons, add half the seasoning packet (I only used half in this video) and/or don’t drink the leftover broth - If you need to limit carbohydrates for medical reasons, add a portion of the ramen in the packet - Not that you asked, but Jin Ramen is my favorite instant noodles brand (Shin ramyun is also great) - I obviously don’t eat instant ramen for lunch every day, but it can be a solid base for a meal if I don’t have the time, energy, or budget to cook a full meal.

@@genevievefolmerr97 she meant realistic in the context of a what many average people eat a day. not everyone has the luxury of eating clean, whole foods all the time. not everyone has a balanced mental health state to be food prepping or washing and cutting up fruits and vegetables. some people are scraping by or can hardly get out of bed, so to offer them suggestions like this instead of expecting they make the most drastic diet changes is a lot more realistic and doable & at the end of the day, it's better to eat junk than nothing at all.
Your line about adding things to make it balanced has been absolutely life changing for me. I’ve always made carbs off limits but now I just make sure I hit my fiber and protein and healthy fats as well

Man i love how realistoc and considerate you are with your meals and advice. LOVE the "think about what you can add instead of taking away" mentality. I do that with most of my own cooking, what other veggies and things can i add to this?
Completely agree. Easy, quick meals are amazing for those who struggle with mental health as well, such as ADHD and PTSD. Some days I feel defeated but still wish to have a nutritious meal, so soups have become my go to. I make a soup ahead, add some veggies, spices and proteins, and some noodles or polenta. And that's my meal. We do what we can.
I discovered you a months ago and this tip has completely changed the way I eat. The guilt is mostly gone. I genuinely can’t thank you enough, your videos have really helped me to stay out of the toxic subtractive mindset with food. You are genuinely an inspiration, thank you so much
Ramen has been the reason I’ve actually eaten food on many days when for many reasons whether time, stress, mental health etc. I could not eat. I usually like mine with boiled egg, a left veg (usually spinach), kimchi and sometimes if I don’t have those things, I’ll eat like sausage or chicken nuggets etc. on the side with my noodles. But usually egg and spinach ! Warm , comforting, filling, easy For some of us that struggle eating well enough (wooo neurodivergence) having one part easy in a meal can make all the difference! It’s yassified ramen or a box of crackers for dinner … I go for the ramen!
Yes, that's the way! Enjoy the ramen, just balance it with veggies and protien. I have found frozen veggies to also be helpful if you cannot access fresh veggies. I sometimes use peas or just the mixed diced veggies. You just add it to the water with the ramen at the start before you boil or microwave it. About half a cup is a pretty good amount. Cook the noodles as you would usually. Tofu is also a good protien option too. It is very easy just to add a few cubes at the start of cooking or just before you add the flavour packet at the end too.
I've recently been losing weight and I couldn't have done it the way some people do- cutting out everything fun and labeling it 'bad'. I've lost 20lbs still eating chocolate and pasta and pizza, it doesn't have to be all or nothing. I'm so glad we have professionals letting people know it's ok to enjoy your food.

Sauces and ingredients you can rotate out! To use this Ramen for example: you could have with with spinach and egg one time, red cabbage and tofu another time, carrots and fish cake another time, Kale and mushrooms another time. Same base and preparation process makes it easy and quick, but different toppings keep it interesting. You could also get multiple flavors of Ramen for even more variety
Your videos are lovely. Promoting balance, not perfection is exactly what we need more of in this world; perfection doesn't exist anyway! Adding and not substracting foods from my diet has been a total game changer. Nothing feels off limits and I don't binge anymore (or at least, very rarely). I am totally hooked on savory oats thanks to you! I'm also slowly developing a better relationship with food overall. Thank you ❤
you’ve helped me so much with adding and not subtracting from food. recovering from an ED is difficult on your mental state as is but having your voice tell me that I should add to my meals has been so helpful. Egg ramen is one of my favorite safe foods and my family laughs at how much effort i put into making it even though it’s instant ramen.
This is so validating! I love ramen but grew up being shamed for eating it since it was labeled as an ultra-unhealthy processed food. I'd even add eggs and veggies to cushion the criticism a little but it still seemed like it wasn't good enough to count as a meal. I even tried other healthier alternatives like buckwheat, brown rice, lentil, and konjac noodles (which are fine btw) to substitute it...but honestly, nothing beats ramen with all the fixings when that's what you're craving! I just hated feeling like I was having a scandalous love-hate relationship with my favorite food 😂 Anyways, the moral of the story is I'm glad more dietitians are taking a stand on the internet to reframe how we feel about food and let go of diet culture mentality ❤️
Yeah the culture around subtracting foods is really fricking harmful really dont reccomend anyone to try it... just keep adding then people will feel full and satisfied except a big chunk of it is from the veggies and other healthy stuff! And a good diet doesnt mean just the healthy stuff but also needs a good amount of treats / whatever youre craving in moderation Because if people limit too much then the cravings will actually become uncontrollable lol
This is great. I have been suffering from sever anxiety and depression since COVID and I realised that dieting is terrible for mental health. I'm ADHD and Autistic so sugar and caffeine really help me stabilize my mood. I eat what I grew up eating which is a light fish curry with veggies and rice and some crunchy papad. This food really helps me feel relaxed as it is familiar and comfortable and at the same time it's nutritious. Regular exercise that's fun and food that brings comfort are the two things that have helped me survive some truly terrible mental health episodes. 💗

That's not what she's saying. What she's saying is that instant Ramen on its own is not a balanced meal, but it can be an affordable way to CREATE a balanced meal. It already has carbs and sodium in it, which are both important (although you probably should only be using half the instant ramen seasoning packet). By adding protein, fiber, and nutrients, you get a more balanced meal that will probably fill you up better and keep you satisfied.
That doesn't make it a balanced meal at all. Even if you use half of the seasoning packet you're still using a boatload of salt. Also, refined carbohydrate, which is in Ramen, can be linked to health problems including high blood pressure

I am recovering from BED- and your videos have helped me have a healthier relationship with food because I no longer feel the need to over-restrict and eat tasteless foods; and now I have been binge free for a long time. I’ve even lost weight without stressing or focusing on it! So thank you 💙
happy you're recovering & working on something that must have been extremely hard for you. good on you ❤️
@@genevievefolmerr97 she meant realistic in the context of a what many average people eat a day. not everyone has the luxury of eating clean, whole foods all the time. not everyone has a balanced mental health state to be food prepping or washing and cutting up fruits and vegetables. some people are scraping by or can hardly get out of bed, so to offer them suggestions like this instead of expecting they make the most drastic diet changes is a lot more realistic and doable & at the end of the day, it's better to eat junk than nothing at all.
@@ren1134 thank you!! Yeah it’s been a journey. Most of it has been from recovering from negative talk and body issues from my own mother growing up.
@@genevievefolmerr97 you don't know what "everyone" can or can't do. Focus on yourself.
@@rochelle178 ok, hopefully someday you'll understand
Your line about adding things to make it balanced has been absolutely life changing for me. I’ve always made carbs off limits but now I just make sure I hit my fiber and protein and healthy fats as well
Fantastic! Good on you!
It is so much better when you come to understand the power of balance. :)
That addition philosophy has been so helpful to me in preparing nutrituous meals. Thank you for the great info and advice!
Yes!!! As a student, I used to just add frozen veggie mix to my ramen! Lol I still do it sometimes if i dont have the energy to cook properly for the family. We also used to just crack an egg into it, the kids called it "hidden egg soup" 😊 Super cheap and minimal effort!
Your view on adding more to food instead of removing it at all changed my life. Thank you
i swear some people think they are the food police lol. and i’m sure most of them are not even dietitians.
What really bugs me are the food police that do it out of "concern"
@@alim.9801 meanwhile they do it in the rudest and most discouraging/insulting ways
I swear I eat one unhealthy thing and they think that defines my whole diet. Like sweetie . I drink warm flaxseed water in the morning that alone shows I try to put effort and I try to eat more veggies and fruits . Deprivation will kill you !!! And make u binge on the long run
Ramen is poison and a dietician just put her stamp on it 😂 and your mad at people who say something about it. Lol clearly you need to grab a packet of ramen skim over the ingredients do a little research on the health effects & educate yourself. But it’s your health ingest what you please !!!
@@_ConfusedCricket_ THIS!!! On my TikTok I was doing a what I eat in a day and I made ramen with pulled meat on the side..and then a little while later I had a small brownie and omg the amount of hate comments were like ‘tHatS tO mUcH fAt’ ‘tO mUcH sAlT’ ‘I cOulD nEvEr EaT tHaT mUcH’
I always feel happy and validated when I see what you eat :') Often, I feel bad even consuming what I want even when I add veggies and stuff but thank you. 💝
Most dieticians, that I have spoken to (diabetic) don't have issue with ramen being unhealthy/high in sodium, it's that it offers no nutrional value on its own, so this is a good one. I need to add more things to my noodles.
Man i love how realistoc and considerate you are with your meals and advice. LOVE the "think about what you can add instead of taking away" mentality. I do that with most of my own cooking, what other veggies and things can i add to this?
You are literally the best dietician in the world, ever. One of America's treasures. Never stop doing what you are doing!
I was thinking about you when I made instant ramen today. I added two boiled eggs, kimchi, and tons of green onions. It was so good!!!
Adding boiled eggs instantly makes it better every time I swear
I discovered you a months ago and this tip has completely changed the way I eat. The guilt is mostly gone.
You only had to tell me twice 😅 and because you speak so judgment free it really stuck with me. And I even lost a little bit of weight. It’s not too significant but I am now focusing on slow and steady instead of fast and restricted. Thank you ❤
I am also a dietitian with IBS and I greatly enjoy your content! Thank you for the work you do sharing bite sized and easy to digest nutrition info ❤
I love this perspective, adding to the meal instead of taking away!
I genuinely can’t thank you enough, your videos have really helped me to stay out of the toxic subtractive mindset with food. You are genuinely an inspiration, thank you so much
they way you talk/think about food is so healthy- thank you for talking about this, so helpful as someone who lots of stomach issues
Warm , comforting, filling, easy
For some of us that struggle eating well enough (wooo neurodivergence) having one part easy in a meal can make all the difference!
Thank You Sooooooo Much For your honesty and Positive Direction regarding food Preparation.
I'm very thin and Struggle with making meals.
I love how you simplify eating! whenever I have a craving for a snack that is “bad”, I instantly hear “what can we add” ❤
I'm trying to lose 130 pounds so I can get a surgery. My biggest goal has been healing my relationships with food and with my body. These kinds of videos help me so much, I smile and then I cry. Thank you for what you're doing
Do you have any tips? And was there a time where you felt like you'll never lose the weight? Cause I feel like that sometimes 😔
Watch my sodium levels helps all my blood panel results. How are your blood panels? keeping track of health progress that way too--it feels so gratifying when your cholesterol levels get within normal range and BP levels are better because of what you ADD rather than what you stay away from.
really love the way you present the meal options 🥺 do you have tips for ppl who get bored of food easily?
Good luck sounds bad but i have to be careful of what eat and drink ...start looking through cookbooks ...also get couple NON JUDGEMENTAL people and go groc shopping, my go to food qhen cant eat really soupy oatmeal, and loose instant potatoes. Slow cooker may be your best friend too. I crave 15 bean sop beans. I keep alot of prepackaged foods cause i wont eat period. And most shakes on market makes me very ill
Sauces
Have you tried mindfulness eating? It's basically a guided meditation about food, worked wonders for me.
@@s.j.warlock4901 oo how does it work, that sounds cool!
I love how realistic and relatable you are.
And a good diet doesnt mean just the healthy stuff but also needs a good amount of treats / whatever youre craving in moderation
Because if people limit too much then the cravings will actually become uncontrollable lol
Your posts like this made me press the follow button! I absolutely love the practical, nonjudgemental yet helpful way you present and enrich food, especially those that are more accessible to ordinary people. Keep up the good work!
Your rule to add more nutrients to existing dishes rather than restrict has been such a helpful tool! Love your videos!
i love how positive you are! You have a different perspectives on eating and how to nourish our bodies. Really appreciate your content. Its relatable but I can see myself applying a recipe like this to my life. Thank you 😊
i will forever remember the "adding instead of subtracting" method, it is hands down the best food advice i've ever received. thank you and keep up the great work!

“Then don’t but I will” one of life’s most perfect statements 🤣💖
I love this!! Me and my mom are in university right now so it’s very hard to cook from scratch like we used to. I watched ur videos talking abt adding nutrients to meals instead of taking things away and it is way more doable♥️♥️
This “what to add to” method I learned from you, helps me enjoy my meals cuz I know in my head I’ve added good nutrients together with! Thank you so much🥰
I love your videos and the way you explain! ♥️♥️♥️ This is exactly how we should be eating, by trying to add to meals in terms of protein and veggies/fibre instead of shaming people for eating certains foods. Not everyone can afford to eat "ultra healthy" foods or can cook that well or 3ven have the time to cook
You are such an amazing person and I genuinely think you will have a serious impact on the health and well being of many generations. People like you make eating food less complicated and more realistic while also adding helpful tips to maintain a healthy diet
Me just eating plain Ramen when I don't want to cook and do all that extra stuff lol
You can throw stuff into the soup and cook it without the noodles, then add the noodles at the end so it won't get overcooked!
Boiled eggs are easy prep ahead food ...edama (yes spelled wrong) leave in freezer set out amount single layer and got corn 🌽 🙃 or another veg you dont have to use what she is using its an example i dont have shredded carrots or boiled eggs but have frozen broccoli can corn, beans and raw eggs ....if you have mixed baby spring mix salad works great in hot soup (read whats in mix 😋) its your food in your house
Thanks for the advice in the comments. I'm disabled so hard for me to find and learn ood low energy recipes.

you can always put leafy greens in your ramen as you’re cooking! i like bok choy but spinach is also great!!!
This makes me feel so much better about myself. I don't make ramen often but when I do I also add things to it like corn, onion, different proteins. Nothing crazy but to make more and my girlfriend always makes fun of me for doing this. Thank you for this
I’ve been craving ramen lately but I felt so guilty about it. I’m taking this video as a sign to enjoy it for lunch
Food should make you feel guilty. Become knowledgeable on basic nutrition, and learn how to read nutritional labels, and understand; everything in moderation. That's it; no guilt required.....OR ALLOWED.😊
Your videos are amazing, they help me a lot because I often don't eat enough because of ADHD and messed up my hungerques from past EDs (and then I have have issues with binging because I didn't get enough nutrients). Because of your videos, I've been foing better with still eating what I want but also adding extra things. For example, chips are a big comfort food for me, so I have them and then just also eat some carrots or bell pepper next to it, and I feel very satisfied both physically and emotionally. It's a work in progress, but I'm definitely heading to a better direction ❤
We all just need to focus on what works best for ourselves! So much nutrition packed in that bowl 😊
"Then don't, but I will"... awesome 😎
you know you’re from hawaii when Sapporo Ichiban is your favorite saimin brand
So true, I don't eat it all the time but now I add so much stuff to my ramen.
I love your positivity. Your diet isn’t as harsh as others, and sparks hope into others by making being healthy feel achievable without destroying yourself. Thank you. ❤
Thank you for this. I've had ARFID my entire life, and it has been a lifelong struggle to try and make things like vegetables, eggs, and beans feel safe to eat. I watch videos like these now to try and desensitize myself to the idea of consuming them. I hope one day in the near future I can actually try this for myself.
I needed to hear this today.
Omg no way! I grew up on that instant ramen!! ✨ Nostalgia ✨
Time to go get me some 🤌
This looks so tasty!
I love what you said let’s focus on what we can add to rather than take away from meals. This can actually help us be healthy.
God i love his women. Instead of guilt tripping she tell how to improve by adding this in your life❤❤❤❤
First thought was that balance is key
“See mom, ramen is healthy”
Some of us NEED a high salt diet, so bring on the instant ramen haha
I LOVE YOUR CONTENT!!! So practical and helpful. Wishing you health & happiness!!!!
I really love how you said “add to and don’t subtract from” that is really insightful ❤️
Girl my grocery store just started carrying the Sun noodle ramen brand (it comes frozen in pack of 2) but the noodles are restaurant quality and it’s inexpensive??? Never going back to the shelf ramen. Please try it if you can!
My family and I love sun noodle!! I pick it up pretty often from the Japanese markets near me! I just used Sapporo Ichiban in this video since it’s the cheapest and most common instant ramen available to most Americans 😊
a lot of restaurants use sun noodles! they're so good and I love when they come with soup bases too
@@NutritionByKylie omg so glad I’m not alone!♥️♥️
if you cant get fresh frozen, look for A-Sha brand air dried clean noodles--just wheat and water. from Taiwan. cheap too, per serving.
Do you have any tips on how to reduce sodium intake? All of my favourite food & seasoning are packed with high sodium :((
I just don't use all the seasoning from the packet.
Maybe substitute low sodium broth instead.
@@beetleblooming make your own nutrient packed bone broth--use a slow cooker for an 8 hr broth. Just strain & chill. Get chicken parts with BONES and knuckles. Chix feet too from an Asian or Mexican mkt: necks & backs. Use this broth rather than water and that so called "spice" pkt. drizzle toasted sesame oil (1 tsp) over the top. It's boss. I love garlic so use some deep fried garlic to the broth MMM
So adding healthy food items to unhealthy food items supposedly neutralizes the unhealthy aspect? That doesnt make sense. Some people put vegetables on pizza. Does that now make piźza healthy?
My dad is a certified nutritionist and everything she is saying is correct. Being healthy doesn't mean you can't be happy with what you eat. It's more about having a healthy baseline. My dad loves chocolate, ice cream, and pie. He even makes the pies during the holiday season. I'm glad more people are putting this valuable information about what diets should really be
This inclusive diet idea is really helping me get out of my Fear of Food ❤ Thank you so much for sharing such nice information 😊
I don’t understand dieticians that keep trying to push unhealthy garbage as fine and safe. It’s not suddenly a nutritious meal because you threw some edamame on top.
This is one of my favourite meals. I struggle with fixing food due to ADHD and some appetite issues, but this always has great flavour, and I can add tons of stuff really easily so it also gives me tons of proteins, fats, minerals and vitamins. It makes me happy and I feel good, it's awesome

This add to mentality is so helpful to me!!!
I haven't heard this in years and its the best advice - add to. Many, many years ago I had a gifted doctor give me the same advice and it forever transformed how I ate. "If you need cheese on your broccoli to eat it, then put cheese on it, add to." ❤
What to add to not subtract is a good motto o never thought of that before ❤
You've genuinely helped me so much with my diet, I don't worry about subtracting like you say and add little things like fruit, veggies, and lighter sides. THANK YOU
Ramen is my go to comfort food for breakfast lunch or dinner. I add different veggies to the water while waiting on it to boil as well as after I plate it! It’s an awesome idea and can be healthy and satisfying 😊
Really great advice. Don’t subtract “unhealthy” ingredients, add nutritious ones!! I think sone of my healthier meals have followed this principle subconsciously, but hearing it said out loud, now I can strive to follow it intentionally!!!
