Owner-built Atlanta Glass Treehouse floats among hardwoods

  • When the financial crisis hit in 2008, architects Mary Clare DeReuil & Carlos Tardio were without work, but determined to continue creating buildings. “We were scouring the city all the time looking for cheap land, land that no one wanted to deal with because it was problematic,” explains DeReuil. They finally picked up property near downtown Atlanta that was “problematic” and “unbelievably cheap” because there was no driveway access.
Over the course of 4 years, the two architects (Tardio Architecture) worked 10 hour days to create an experimental glass dream home using materials easily accessible in industrialized settings: steel beams, cast concrete, 2 by 6 milled lumber, and lots of recycled glass. “We scrapped this thing together with personal loans, brother and sister loans, loan sharks, credit cards, we just did whatever and made it happen.”
Not wanting to cut down any of the mature trees on the property, DeReuil and Tardio designed the home around the trees. As a result, the structure floats among the huge hardwoods and has been nicknamed the “Atlanta treehouse”. Tardio prefers “House of Doors” since “the structural system was derived from an exploration of doors”. All the doors in the home are made of heavy sheets of glass with Tardio’s proprietary pivot system which allows even a child to open them with ease (we, the faircompanies family, took the home for a test drive and our then 3-year-old could open them easily).
To help pay off all those loans DeReuil and Tardio use only the studio on the top floor (a secret pivoting door separates the two floors) and rent the lower floor on AirBnB.

Love this house, especially now that she's explained how they put it together with acquired materials. I too have 7 wind screen glass panels on my 2nd story side porch acquired from used patio doors. They aren't insulated but are tempered. Make sure you always get tempered glass if you use replacement glass. People will give you old glass doors but the really old ones are dangerous when they break. You can tell because somewhere in one corner there will be a bug/logo which tells you it's tempered. Thanks for showing this. I especially love the diving board used as a counter top. Awesome!

Thankyou Mary and Carlos for sharing your beautiful home, and Kirsten for always asking the right questions. Though not easy, this is absolutely the correct way to do a treehouse. My heart sank when I recently saw an Airbnb which used three large Cypress trees to support it and its deck (who's going to want to stay in a place that will soon be tilted and intimate with three dying trees?).
Most in the building sector have to be extra resourceful during recessions but at 66, I can say that this is the most imaginative response/solution that I'm aware of. Your massive, but delicate, balanced doors are gorgeous. I've never seen vertical trusses used on pivot doors before. They are ingenious because their angles absolutely strengthen your aesthetic while at the same time allow the central pivot to be delicate as well.

Well I think the trees around the house are alive just because of decoration purpose under the slogan of blending in with nature. Nothing more than that, unless they are truly into environmental life because all the wooden floors and furniture, and materials made from modern construction industry in that house were possible only by cutting down hundreds trees.

@@user-sl309jd90 Don't hate on the use of real wood. Sustainability is not as straight forward as not cutting down trees. If all building materials were made out of fake material then you would have a lot of non-biodegradable items in the trash/landfill. Meanwhile using real wood is biodegradable and some tree species replanted can mature in ~30 years. Obviously we can't use real wood on every single facet of construction or we'd be out of trees, but you get the point.
