I should have taken notes. He is incredibly pretty and we have built quite a bond over the years. I hope he was saying he loves me as much as I love him.
It’s currently 2 am, not even Halloween. I’m hearing 2 owls do this and I can’t fall asleep. I had headphones on listening to music and had to take them off cause I got scared lmao. Spent 15 minutes trying to find the exact thing that could be making that sound. It was indeed creepy, but I think k can get some sleep now lol
I used to work as a security guard, and on the midnight shift at our local power company’s corporate headquarters (former headquarters; the Board of Education uses that building now) I could hear horned owls hooting when I was on outside patrol. The other guards complained about how eerie it was, but I loved them. Now that my mother-in-law has been gone for five years (she had a thing about owls), seeing or hearing an owl is even more special because it’s like a shout-out from her spirit. Thanks for the video!
I love the owls hooting too. what a great memory and tribute to your mother-in-law. I love the owls and watch them year round. They are fascinating to me.
How did you know it was a great horn? I've always thought that owls had the same call ( barred owl "who cooks for you, who cooks for you allllllllll") ...i just learned that owls have different calls, ive heard this before and ignored it because i thought it was just locusts....
Phillip Dean Nope, different species of owls have different hoots! I looked up owl sounds on the Audubon website after I heard the owl hooting, and confirmed it was a Great Horned Owl. Their hoot is quite distinct and definitely unforgettable!
@@dragondancer1814 yeah you are correct....i've passed up lots of opportunities to see a great horn just because i thought they all sound like barred owls...dammit...now i know tho, gotta find one
Just heard this, from my front porch tonight! Had to search this, to make sure that I guessed right! And yes! Just another great addition to nature's night time music! Soooo very calming!!
I once worked with an owl that came from Alasks, who was a rescue wih a badly broken wing. She was a beauiful dark color. We were told the great horned owls are darker in Alaska to help absorb more heat

my grandma said an owl was hooting all night when my aunt gillian and uncle mike were over with our cousins, conner and chase, and their dog, tucker, one night when they were staying over with them. it was driving tucker nuts, he couldn't stop barking at it like he wanted to attack it.
Ms Beutler--I've searched YT for a Great Horned Owl hoot licensed under Creative Commons and this nice video came up. I need the hoot, not the imagery, and just want to let you know that I'll use it in a video I'm now producing about the Mojave Road. It will be at the beginning of the Day 2 video. Thanks, and that's a marvelous shot you have of the owl!
i keep hearing this so late at night sometimes i'm like: ain't no way that's a mourning dove n whaddya know...i was right. this guy is just hooting extremely late at night 💀 wish i could see him tho...
That squawking in between his calls, is the female, right? My husband and I were out last evening at a cemetery that sits next to a small park, trying to locate the owls we have heard there. We heard a Great Horned hooting in one direction and then a loud squawk from the other direction. I wasn't sure what the squawking sound was till I looked them up later. I use the site "All About Birds" which has calls and songs for each different bird. One of the sounds was the female's noise and it was that loud squawk. So I'm guessing that was a male and female calling back and forth.
Yes the squawking was the female. I follow a lot of owls and most of them hoot back and forth to each other, especially while courting. This is the only female I have heard squawking instead. It sounds like she is not the only one that does that. :)
@@deannabeutler, thanks for the quick answer! When we heard the squawking seeming to answer the hoots from the opposite direction, we couldn't quite make out what it could be. It sounded a bit like a duck or goose, and there are ducks at a small pond in the park, and they are down the hillside from where we were listening. Occasionally the ducks still make a bit of noise after dark, but this sounded as if it was coming from the woods across the road from the park. It must have been the female. Now we know there is some Great Horned courting going on. ☺
There is one always hanging out in my neighborhood at night, and accidentally interrupt his hooting. Also he flew off it was the very last time i got to see him, I did not mean to scare him cause i was getting ready for work. 😢
@@Jason-om6fg Are there any big nests or cavities around for them to use. They do not build their own nests but steal nests instead. That is why they are the earliest nesters. A friend of mine wired a laundry basket up into a tree, drilled holes in the bottom for drainage and added leaves. The owls used it and he could watch the owl family for his upstairs window.
