Larry to me was the best all around basketball player of all time. Red Auerbach in his later years said if he was going to start a new team that Larry would be his first pick. He would score, rebound, assist, dive on the floor, have eyes in the back of his head, and most of all a great leader. The young kids today need to watch him on youtube. They can learn so much about what it takes to leave everything on the floor. Miss you Bird - Bring back the 80's!
this is the reason why i fell in love with basketball ,Bird is my all-time NBA player ever i love magic johnson too,two gigantic players who doesn't care about stats or anything,it's all about business and winning.
@@toscodav Nick Wrong has done extensive research of not watching him play and having no concept of the impact of hand checking and physical defense on stats and efficiency yet just somehow knowing he's not as good as Lebron anyway.
Larry always knew where every player was on the court!! That why he was the Best Passer ever!!! Teamates knew to look for the ball when he had it & SCORE!!! Larry's the GOAT!!! Agree the music distracts from the video!!
It all starts with his deadly accurate shooting which forces defenders to respect his shot. Often Bird gets double teamed and I've never seen any player better at finding the open teammate. For YEARS Bird , Parish, DJ, Walton, McHale worked the old pick-N-roll, give-N-go plays to perfection. Bird was right up there with Magic and Pistol doing the no look passes, fancy passes... Larry was the KING of the touch pass. Deadly behind the arc, one of the best ever free throw shooters. He rebounded like Moses Malone. Bird is THE best player ever PERIOD.
People forget about how good Bird was. Birds skills translate to today’s game better than the game of the 80’s. Elite scorer, elite shooter, elite passer, great rebounder, good defender and the most clutch player ever. Best small forward of all time.
Doug John I respect your opinion and put Bird very high, top 2 even. Even to say the best passer/shooter ever, it’s arguable. But your ‘can’t compare’ comment shows your age. You obviously haven’t seen Curry play. His shooting speaks for itself but his passing rivals Bird’s too, just the other day he did a catch and immediate throw a left handed behind the back pass down the court. Not the first time either. Dudes ridiculously talented. I would go as far to say he’s a better passer but definitely a better shooter than Bird. Still take Bird in my top 5 before him though to soothe the butthurt.
...and a couple of years ago Curry made a behind the back pass (out of bounds) that cost the Warriors the Championship ...Bird never did that.....Curry 's a hot dog
Randy Meyer nice anecdote that in no way contradicts the point I made. I especially like the part where you ignore how I put Bird in my Top 2. Keep up the good work.
Randy Meyer moreover I can see how you could be easily confused. When I say Top 2 I mean top 2 greatest of all time in everything. It basically goes Jordan then Bird IMO. Dude said best passer and shooter and by those 2 categories alone, ‘can’t compare’. That’s the part I had problem with. Reading comprehension is your friend.
Larry was amazing to watch! Watching this video makes me laugh and smile at how Bird just carved out the defenses he faced with such surgical precision! Was simply the best!! Larry Legend
@@felipedibo7795 He plays in todays NBA with their rules now.... HE IS A GOD!! Watch Reggie Miller on the Dan Patrick show, where he is asked if he want's Larry at 30 or Lebron at 30 on his team. That's all you need to know.
Watch his last game at the Garden Game 6 of the playoffs against the Cavs, he had about 10% left in the tank because of his back at halftime he had 10 pts 10 asists and 5 rebounds, some of those assists were beauties.
They practiced it to perfection to keep their eyes on the ball vs goal. Especially win Bird controlled the ball. Bird's eyes are like certain species that have a 360° vision.
They definitely focused on Bird's bullet passes during practice, making sure to always be ready for a pass. I was also very impressed with his teammates, it still takes a lot to finish some of those plays in the post or the fadaway jumpers
Those Celtics were a well oiled machine you could tell they played for each other. All they cared about was winning. They fed off each other. You can see it in how fast the ball flies between their hands they don't want the shine. They want the team to shine
I see all kinds of post saying how terrible the music is and they turned it off. Is it because they do not know how to mute the device they are using??? My advice to all: Mute and Watch. The greatest of around basketball player of all time.
trha2222 Agreed. But its embarrasing as all heck to have someone pass the ball between your legs. And unless I'm mistaken - Bird actually did this twice to Sikma but the other one didnt have as good a camera angle on it.
Great court vision, great instinct, great hands. So graceful, too. He pulled off being slow and flashy at the same time. And his teammates knew they had to be ready for anything at the drop of a pin, same as Magic Johnson's teammates. Bird could make his opponents look bad but he could also make his teammates look bad if they didn't bring their A-games. Bird, Magic, and Jordan made the NBA an elite league, something it wasn't even close to being in the 1970s.
Greatest passer of all time. Greatest shooter of all time. Greatest basketball IQ of all time. Quite possibly Greatest clutch player of all time. I've always thought Jordan was the greatest player of all time but the more time goes by, the smaller the gap between Jordan and Bird seems to get to me. Chief and Lerch are in the Hall BECAUSE they played with Bird.
Bird was playing chess when everyone else was playing checkers! How the heck did he do some of those passes? Behind the back no look? How? Half of it was because he was so confident in his abilities. The guy was amazing!!
That was fun to watch.. great video! I miss this era of ball. Celtics were in succinct with each other in passing and shooting. Bird was the Eagle of the team with his eyes; if a teammate was open, he found them. Bird is best all around player still to this day.
The aspect of Bird's play that doesn't get enough attention is the fact the he very likely reduced his prime by 5 years simply as a result of playing TOO HARD. He went for balls in throw-away games just because of his competitiveness. MANY players - both today and in the past - preserve themselves. I'm not saying which way is "better." But Larry Legend very likely could have added to his incredible legacy another 2-5 years if he'd been a little more selective. But that's just not how he rolled.
Don't forget, Bird was a FORWARD, a top notch shooter. How he managed to be the best passer, only Larry can do that. Then he rebounded like a center, game after game. There has never been a player as great as Larry and I doubt there will ever be.
Bird had quick thinking and quick hands. A flick, a tip, over/behind his head bounce pass to McHale in traffic might be the greatest degree of difficulty of all those passes. Sensational. Like a basketball conductor. He orchestrated the game. Others reacted to his whims out there. Also, Larry is more flashy than he’s given credit for. But never at the risk of the play or game.
Its why if ur starting a team he is BY FAR the #1 player u'd take because of how he gets everyone involved...Was he the best scorer, no but that wasn't his game but he could do it all--Rebound, pass, steals, and shoot the lights out--argualbly the best clutch shooter of all time...Who else would you rather have taking the last shot in a game...?
There are a few incredibly talented players who may have cooler looking passes but Bird could Instananeously improvise from Anywhere from Any angle on court !
_LOVE_ this. Even if he never scored a basket of his own... He elevated a sport to an art-form. I get the same exalted feeling, watching these plays, as I do listening to my very favourite music.
Hey tweetiebird, maybe it was because he is a ballhog.. The best all around player is Bird. Remember Jordan did not win until late in the careers of Bird and Magic. He was a bridesmaid.
The ultimate team player. No ball hog, he rather hand off to a teammate in a better shooting position so the team benefits. This after drawing the defence to open that player up in the first place. Love how he fakes shooting and pops it to another.
Sorry this vid has probably been seen a million times but I want to state the absolute perfection behind that fake shot to pass at 1:24...theres absolutely no giveaway in his movement that hes going to pass...no hesitation or last minute looks...a viewer would have no idea what would happen until the ball literally leaves his fingers because even as its rolling of his tips, it still looks like hes going for the shot...
no body passed better than Bird. Don't believe me? Think Magic? Go back and watch the games. Magic was flashy, but Bird was there and effective. Check it out sometime
