I use my HomePods as speakers for my Samsung Frame TV. I don’t like the look of a soundbar underneath the TV so I connected the AppleTV 4K with 2 HomePods and it works great. You can place them anywhere you want and there is no delay in the sound. 👌🏻
Hi Craig, I have 5 minis (and 2 Homepods). While I love them for all the reasons you mentioned, I mainly bought so many because they form a very robust Thread network inside and outside my house along with the other Thread devices I have. My smart home is very stable since I added started adding them. I also have several Echo Show devices and a couple of large Echo speakers coupled with a Fire TV and they are good, too, but as a major Apple user, I get the most value from the minis.
Nicely done, Craig. I suspect that many of us who subscribe to your channel are already using the HP Mini in the ways described. BUT, it helps as an item to share with our spouses, friends, and for the really daring, our parents. I bought my first mini in November and now have 9 +2 wall mounted iPads that also work for Siri sources. One thing I love is how good the devices are at not competing but ultimately selecting one device to reply. This is what has made me want to expand up to another 2-3 HPs. I love being able to say Hey Siri anywhere in my house and knowing I have a device in earshot that will help me out. I probably do this, without regard to where I am in my house, about 20-30 times per day.
I started with Alexa. I grabbed some home pod minis to try and switch away as I have apple everything. It has not been easy and I’ve pretty much come to the conclusion I will use HomePod minis for music and entertainment and just use my echo dots for actual smart home control. Hopefully apple can get siri to be better.
I have 2 in my living room with my Apple TV 4K and it’s a great stereo pair for sound. And playing music in the living room. Call quality is top notch. And I love the integration with my apple ecosystem. It’s still struggles with “smart related” stuff. But it’s still a good deal for 99 bucks if you are ingrained in the apple ecosystem like myself.
I just got my second HomePod mini and looking forward to another to fill the apartment and be able to take full advantage of that "play everywhere" amazing... and all those things you just said are the things I love that I am able to doe everyday
Home assistant can be used to bridge non HomeKit apple devices into the eco system and Scrypted can be used to bring rstp cameras into HomeKit secure video with recording! Have mostly Alexa devices but a couple of these.
I got mine a week ago to better control my Nanoleaf lightbulbs in ny bedroom. It also came in handy when asking it to play or pause content on my apple tv or having it open up an app for me. I am very much happy with what it can do.
Appreciate this and your other vids. Was surprised you didn’t speak about the greatest advantage of Apple/HomePod Mini: Unparalleled security. HomePod is considered the most secure of any available. Sadly, this does limit the range of capabilities and connections for now. Of course, a better sounding speaker wouldn’t hurt either.
I reckon Apple is making their own search engine behind the scenes. Same as new 5G modem chips, new displays, etc. so that they become less reliant on third parties. After an Apple search engine, Siri will begin to evolve, especially on the HomePod.
Alexa runs my house I am a first time iPhone user so I bought a home pod. Now I am switching over. I hope apple does more with this. I am impressed by the pod mini. It runs my hue lights with no problem.
How is the latency with watching videos? I probably won’t use it as a smart home hub, since most of my smart home stuff isn’t compatible. But, I may pick one up for easy integration with my apple stuff.
The main reason I don’t use the HomePod mini is the audio quality is no way near as good as similarly priced echos, plus even as an avid iPhone user I don’t use Apple Music because again it doesn’t quite impress as much as the competition. I want to like the HomePod mini enough to have one but it doesn’t quite cut it
I have 1 HomePod mini, but haven't really been using it. How do you get the mini to answer to HeySiri, and not all my other devices: iPhone, iPad, etc? They all want to answer to Hey Siri!
Love my HomePod Mini with the exception that opening the garage door makes me “continue on my personal device”, which a lot of times doesn’t work. It does work on closing the garage door, which is very helpful when my hands are full.
So have thrown these in the bin as far to many bugs to deal with I would have to restart every other day to fix issues like not pairing and so on - have now invested in the Sonos system and my life is so much calmer- just ask Sonos to play my music and it just works - the new Sonos voice control is basic but just gets the job done without the stress 🇬🇧
As a person with echos and Google home and has never had a home pod. I hate the amount of ads with Amazon and Google thinks just about everything is “hey Google”
Nice useful video, Craig. I'm using Alexa for most things and as you know, it's terrific, but have recently started to dabble in Homekit a bit and find it not nearly as capable overall as Alexa/SmartThings, but since I'm an iPhone/Mac user I figure why not? I can continue to use the other systems in addition to Homekit. I had been using an old iPad as a Homekit Hub so I could control a LOT more devices using a Raspberry Pi Hoobs setup, and do it when away from home, After Brian told me Apple is taking that capability away I decided to get a Homepod Mini. The bottom line is that it works well as a Homekit hub and thanks to you I'm reminded about the useful Siri integration. It's ok for music, but not nearly as good as the "big" Echo for the same price. Nevertheless I consider it a good purchase and thanks for filling in some "blanks" about other things it can do!
Hello Hugh, I hope you are doing well. I can see what you are saying about capabilities. Especially when you are a power user like yourself using smart things. Sounds like a great learning experience working HomeKit into what you have. Glad to hear it has been a good person. I am happy to hear I was able to help. It’s great you are using multiple assistants. More people should.
As part of a rewards program at work I was able to get my first one free. My goal was to try it out and if I liked it buy another one to use with my TV. I did end up buying a second one and I do really like them. I like that I can just ask Siri questions or I used it the other day to send a text to someone. It's very convenient to have. I haven't really explored much else but probably will in the future.

I find that I don’t even use it with all of my smart home stuff, but rather mostly for Apple Music. Great video as always Craig!
I have one HomePod mini and a Alexa Spot. Hopefully Apple will put a screen on on a new HomePod. No one really talks about the Echo Spot, it’s a great little gadget.
Honestly, I’m not a fan. I have five original HomePods in my home, and when I tried one of the HomePod mini’s recently, I couldn’t even hear the HomePod mini until I bumped it up to 75% volume with the original HomePods at 15%. Basically the HomePod mini had to be almost maxed out just to keep up with the originals at a moderate volume.
How is it possible for only 10% of people to be using HomePod Minis! Lol Thanks for helping the conversion rates, who could argue with your Top 3 reasons!! HPMs are amazing. Great video!
I have three right now and I’m gonna buy two more of the little ones and I’m gonna find either I hear that they’re gonna come out with the new big HomePod original redesigned but if they don’t come out with it soon I’m gonna go on eBay or Amazon and get two of the original big HomePods but yes right now I have three of the little ones and I need two more to get stereo phonic sound which I did not realize until I watched another RUclips video showing to Apple speak to mini pods on either side of the TV and I think that’s a great idea
Spotify doesn’t work with Siri commands on the HomePod. Until this gets fixed then it’s a no from me. It seems dumb that Spotify works with Siri on the iPhone though :/ Apple also needs to make a smart speaker with a small screen for me to change everything over
There was a time you promote Amazon Echo, giving more or less the same arguments. I have been using an Amazon for more than one year now and it does perfectly the job... for a third of the price !
I want to stream a URL. Must I (1) Airplay from my iOS device or (2) can the HomePod Mini stream independently-only being “controlled” by an iOS device? I’ve yet to find this answer anywhere.
thx, great Video. The incoming call reply was new for me. Is there already a way to change "alarm clock sound" maybe by default? I know i can change it in the home app, but if i set a alarm or timer by voice to the homepod mini, its very loud there.
i use my home pod mini to turn on and off my bedroom light. also to turn on and off my apple tv. also to hand off podcast from my phone to my bedroom mini
The Sonos voice system just works so much better basic but that’s all you need ask it to play an album and it just works basic commands are skip tracks , volume , turn tv off and so on - got rid of my home pods as far to many bugs
I have stereo HomePod minis with my Apple TV 4K, I don’t think there is a reason to only buy one. Especially since its only a hundred bucks. I got a slightly used Apple TV 4K for only 80 bucks too. I use it for apple fitness plus more than steaming. I don’t really have time to watch streaming anymore because I work Monday through Friday and workout 3-4 hours a day. I started with Disney plus because I won’t support that company ever again but I realized I was paying for stuff I had no use for. It blows my mind how lazy people are. I’ve talked to so many people that claim They don’t have time to workout but when I ask them if they watch TV shows they say “ya”. To which I say if you have an hour or more a day to watch TV you have an hour to workout. It’s not that hard to workout for an hour. I smoked a pack a day for 16 years and 2 packs a day for 4 years and quit a month ago. I’m also 37 so how am I able to run 6 miles a day but others “can’t because it’s too hard”. Just reminds me how weak people are haha
I got one when they came out, but I'm really disappointed with it. I wanted to set it up with my iPod to play music. It worked with handoff a few times but then stopped working. If I ask it anything it says it will send the results to my iPhone followed by it can't find my iPhone. Thankfully my Echo Show does what I want.
I am glad to hear the Echos have been better for you. Sorry to hear that the HomePod mini was disappointing. I appreciate you sharing your experience. Don't completely give up on Siri, she may be able to help in other ways. I am all for a multi-assistant house. Thanks for watching
I would not expect any price reduction on the minis. Maybe, but I have serious doubts. I thing the better priced full size HomePod rumors are true. I can see some color changes for the mini, but I would be surprised for a price drop.
One thing I'm disappointed at is that i can't set a default speaker for music for an example, I have mine into the home theatre and I would love if I say play my music it would automatically play it trough my Apple TV and home cinema speakers.. now I have to say play my music then say play it on Apple TV..
Love your videos and thanks for doing them. I have learned a bunch from them. We have bought into the Apple ecosystem for years now. I am in the process of converting my house into a smart home so I have been watching various RUclips creators for perspective. Just to provide more perspective, I am retired but I am very much into tech so I am looking forward to the challenge. I plan to purchase a 2022, 128 GB Apple TV for my 65”LG CX TV (located in the basement) and was playing with the idea of getting the Home Mini for our main level. I have set up the house with two different wifi names, hardwiring a router to my main modem to ensure better wifi coverage on our main level. Because of that choice I am wonder how to solve the issue if I do a threaded smart home. Any assistance would be appreciated.
Wondering how or if it gets confused between the iPhone, Apple Watch and HomePod when you say the command? Also, what about multiple iPhone users in the household with their devices in the same room?
@@CraigsTechTalk I will enjoy it for sure because I enjoy using Siri and perhaps I am one of the few ones here in Sardinia to use it often eheheh. Thank you again for the video 🙏🙏🙏
@@CraigsTechTalk I was thinking the same thing to replace our Echo Show 8 but honestly we NEVER use the screen. I want a HomePod sound bar with AppleTv and FaceTime camera built in like I’ve seen rumored.
Unfortunatly i can’t use the send message or read message with most of my contacts like my wife, because we speak Spanish in the house. It will be great if Siri could understand Spanish as well English at once.
Really struggling with trying to decide between Alexa and apple for home automation. Building a home and want to have home automation but having a difficult time deciding.
If you’re building a new house I recommend running Cat-8 and speaker cable EVERYWHERE you can! To include not only for the internet and WiFi, but for wired security cameras and wired speakers for whole home audio, especially if you want a surround sound system. Wire it up before the drywall goes up.
That is an interesting point. I am afraid to saying anything about matter with the uncertainty of it all😀 For this one I wanted to stay away from the smart home and focus on the other stuff that could add value. I know my wife could not care less about the smart home. But using reminders and listening to music. I hate the idea of people not seeing the other uses and how it can be an extension of the devices they have. Thank you for watching this one Vin.
There is a way that I know to control that except turning off "Hey Siri" on some devices. I experienced that today with my phone answering to set a timer when the HomePod mini should have.
@@CraigsTechTalk thanks for the reply. I’ve watched a lot of your videos lately. Really good stuff. Keep up the great work. BTW, would love a video showing which 3rd party apps Apple TV remote really works with. The only app I can use the “scrubbing” feature for rewind/FF is Apple TV+. Doesn’t work on RUclips TV, Netflix, not Prime. That’s disappointing. Same with variable speed rewind/FF. Only works with Apple TV+. Only one speed for 3rd party apps.
I have google homes and I love them but google home app is just absolutely aweful and is making me want to go into HomeKit devices a lot more because the app and just the way it works is so much nicer.
I literally have everything apple except the HomePod because of Siri being the assistant. Now if Siri was on an Alexa level I would get one of these in a heartbeat
If I could take it to different room without have to unplugging and plugging it back in. I'm not buying one for each room. That is why I don't own one. Not it's capacities. If you can get Apple to put a battery in it. I'll sub ;)

Can the call feature etc be used between multiple users
Wondering how or if it gets confused between the iPhone, Apple Watch and HomePod when you say the command? Also, what about multiple iPhone users in the household with their devices in the same room?
I find that if I have a non HomePod mini open then it might get confused. But in most cases the HomePods answer, even if my phone picks it up.
I have 2 regular homepods and one mini!
Thank you for this video! I was considering if buy this HomePod mini or not… always awesome!
Thank you very much. I hope you enjoy it if you get one.
@@CraigsTechTalk I will enjoy it for sure because I enjoy using Siri and perhaps I am one of the few ones here in Sardinia to use it often eheheh.
Thank you again for the video 🙏🙏🙏
I have two HPM and I’m waiting for Apples next HomePod release.
Nice. Me too. Hoping for one with a display.
@@BreakTime10101 thanks for the recommendation, was going to run cat6 but now will do cat8
I have a HomePod that doesn’t get used because it is wired. If it was wireless I would be more likely to use it!
Craig, I’m really surprised you haven’t mentioned Home Pod Mini as an access point in the upcoming Matter Standard.
I'm actually getting 2 so I can use audio arc on my apple tv as my computer speakers
Very cool. That is great Arc is an option now. Hope you enjoy them.
@@CraigsTechTalk thanks
Hi there, how many HomePod minis can play the same music at the same time? Thanks!
You could get music to play on all of them.
I’m waiting for the next HomePod
In the UK it does not play the BBC. Crazy.
Siri helping people get into trouble with their spouses daily 😆
That’s awesome. Love it. Hope you are doing well.
I have multiple Apple devices. When I say “hey Siri”, they all go off. How do you make it so only the mini responds?
I am with you on the app. I think Apple is the only one making a smart home app. It has some great features.
I’m getting a HomePod mini
I literally have everything apple except the HomePod because of Siri being the assistant. Now if Siri was on an Alexa level I would get one of these in a heartbeat
I have 4 so far.
I love my HomePod mini ❤
Good to hear.
Can you end calls hands free with HomePod ?
Yes you can. You can ask Siri to hangup.
Waiting for HomePods to work with Mac computers…don’t know why they haven’t done this yet…doesn’t seem like it would be a big deal.
That is ridiculous. You would think that would be an option by now.
you can output your Mac to your MacBook already.
I want one but I don’t have room yet
I own 2 HomePod minis!!!!!
Debating, still debating which way to go.
Very helpful review. Thanks!
Waiting for Prime Day
3:51 😂
HomePod don’t work in Portugal 🇵🇹
That is disappointing. Sorry to hear that.
If I could take it to different room without have to unplugging and plugging it back in. I'm not buying one for each room. That is why I don't own one. Not it's capacities. If you can get Apple to put a battery in it. I'll sub ;)
