Freaking AWESOME truck! I bought a ‘99 Yukon from Sewell (last year of the square body style). It was 4x4, 4 door, platinum silver (basically the same as the silver on this ‘78), tan leather interior and loaded. I had Sewell add the black fender flairs and skid plates. Yes, it had high miles (120k when. we sold it), but I’m anal about my vehicles and it was ALWAYS serviced, always 9n Michelin’s, and I had a binder with all that paperwork, from window sticker to every receipt for all the maintenance.
It's interesting how square bodies have finally gotten some long overdue respect. The previous 67-72 generation got out of reach for many and the SB's were then sought after. I have owned a '72 Cheyenne for thirty years and finally decided I needed a SB. I looked for months and finally found a perfect '85 short wide that I really enjoy. They have a lot more comfort features than the previous gen and they really are a very good looking truck. Looks like the OBS will be next.

Beautiful Blazer... Take the aftermarket grill out and put the original one back in with the Chevrolet Bowtie to give it the 100 percent original look.
If that's a late month build '78 it may be called Saratoga Silver (code 17), but could have the slightly lighter color, which that does look like, that they switched to for the '79 model year which uses the same code 17 as the 78, but is called Mystic Silver Metallic and is just slightly lighter than the deeper Saratoga. They ran the '78's and '79's down the same line at the same time with slight changes in the frames, some interior panels, and the hood had a slight detail ridge change from the '78, so it could be a '78 body but was in line at the time they changed the code 17 paint shade. Hey Dennis. I see you found another of Minnesota’s hidden treasures. First y’all scored that sweet Boss 9. Now this! I frequent the French Lake Auto Recyclers as it’s close to our lake house. Can’t overlook the Windy Hill salvage yard . Both are amazing. With this pandemic thing, I have time on my hands. If I can help you out in any way. I’d be more than happy to assist. Seeing that K-5 makes me wish I had my Frost White 86 Blazer with the factory forged aluminum wheel upgrade. For the longest time I was the only one around with those wheels. All others had Rally rims. I like yours easy better though with the Black and Silver. Could’ve used that motor too. My 305 only had 165 hp. Then I discovered Jeep’s! I have 2 now and have hade a half dozen of them. I know you’re a wrangler kind of man. Don’t judge too harshly as I really love my XJ’s!! So fun! Thanks for tolerating my rambling on. I’m heading to the cabin in a minute. Be going through Annandale in about90 minutes. Have a great day!
First off. I owned a 78' K5 back in 1990 ( standard silver ). Second...90% of painters out there WILL screw up on a silver blend / why? as you stated -- way to many variance's in paint chip cards / age of existing paint / prior repaint / differences in formulas from many different paint manufacturers / there was no such thing as BC/CC in 1978 / todays painters will have nothing to do with single stage paint. Here's your homework assignment..start paying attention to silver cars and I will GUARANTEE you see paint mismatches out there. Even IF they nailed the base color they will inevitably lose the match in how they applied the clearcoat ( ** it has to be "stepped out" carefully ) if not -- the missmatch will slap you upside the head.
I bought a '78 Chevy Blazer new. Standard trim, 350 V8, four-speed manual, part-time transfer case. The thing was a tank, but a reliability nightmare--one of the most unreliable vehicles that I ever owned--litany of major problems. Weird--my family owned a '73 Chevy 4X4 pickup that was about the same powertrain as the Blazer, except for an automatic transmission. That thing was worked to death and was still running at 28 years old. I also had a '77 Chevy half-ton 4x4, same powertrain as the Blazer. I sold it to get a one-ton. The rancher who bought the '77 put over 250K miles on it and it was still going the last I knew. But the Blazer was junk--of all the Chevies that we owned in that era, the Blazer was the only one built at the Fremont, California GM plant--which many people said was famous for producing unreliable garbage.
This truck is beautiful. Miss my 79 K5.....bought for 5k with 20k miles in 81 when I was 18. White with red interior Thought I was living large. Unlike this truck, I drove the hell out of mine, everywhere from ski trips to Colorado, Wyoming, Michigan, from Cincy , to spring breaks in Florida. Put over 200k miles on it with 1 rebuild.. A lot of fun. Nice vid !
Hard to believe GM crammed 400 cubic inches into a small block architecture that started out as a 265. I believe the 400 sbc had siamesed cylinders which required steam holes and is also not very forgiving if you overheat it. I think 72 was last year in a passenger car and you could get it as an option in trucks through 1980 but......and correct me if i'm wrong........i think 72 was also the last year for 4 bolt mains 400sbc. Any 400 after 72 was a 2 bolt main whereas all heavy duty 350s continued on with 4 bolt mains. A minor detail, of course, but the main reason for selecting the 400sbc was the torque. But even in this era you could special order a 454BBC. Maybe not in the K5s, but the other trucks. Knew a guy at work had a 77 or 78 4x4 suburban in nice condition. This was around 2005. Bought it from original owner. Special ordered with 454 big block. Heavy duty TH400 trans (i believe the heavy duty came with straighter cut planetaries for heavy loads and torque. It's why school buses had a whine.) and a 4.11 posi rear axle. He said the guy bought it for pulling his camper in the mountains. He took me for a ride. That Suburban would get up go like a muscle car.
Lmao, ya also saw him nearly open the passenger door to far near the engine on the engine stand.....the young man walking with him saw it and grabbed the engine and rolled it out of the way...haha
I had a 1979 K-5 Blazer with a 400 small block and every option available, it had two pages to the window sticker! AWD with a transfer case! Wish that I had it back, I sold it to my mechanic when I moved out of Washington state over twenty years ago. I've only seen one in Hemmings in the last five years, they are rare trucks!
That's one super nice K5 Blazer. My 78 was a rubber floor mat, radio delete, three on the tree plain as you could get it truck. But it was an off road beast and off road it went! I didn't worry about scratching that high mile truck. Winchester Gray was a color option from Dodge in 1970. It's beautiful.
I have a sb 400, it's a great torque motor as if the largest of the small block engines, as for toughness the 400s are no tougher than any other sb. I could argue they are weaker though as they dont cool nearly as well as the smaller bore sbc s do to the Siamese bore.
Alright Dennis, you and your welder buddy just committed a mortal sin! NEVER EVER EVER EVER would you carry a cup of anything into a paint booth! One little bobble and someone is spending a lot of time fixing that screw up! Don’t care if you do own the place get the hell out of my paint booth with that cup in your hand!
Just wanted to take a minute to say thank you. you’re one of the guys that have kept me sane for the past year while recovering. I should be restoring my family owned 68 GTO that my dad bought brand new in 69. But when being diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2012 wasn’t enough to stop me I got paralyzed in 2019 from the neck down. Let me tell you that’ll put the kibosh on your car tinkering. I had to start all over….. and learn how to walk and feed myself and do basically everything people do every day. It’s been a long hard struggle but I’ve gotten everything back with the exception of my hands…my left hand wont open all the way and the right won’t close all the way. I just wanted to say thank you for being one of the guys I watch regularly while struggling to get back out there and “get my goat” back on the road thank you and keep up the good work.
I worked at a Chevy dealer in the late '70s and into the '80s and there were brand new cars coming right off the car carriers that didn't have matching silver panels. Vans, pickups, that silver was terrible for that. The dealer also owned a Toyota franchise across the street and they owned a truck that I plowed snow in Michigan, 2 lots and 100s of driveways and towed a 1977 Corolla rally car on a trailer. 1978 K Blazer with a 400 with a Western plow. We traveled all over the country and into Canada. Chevy never let us down.
Dennis I remember when these were brand new! I really liked them but I had to have a Gold Edition T Top Trans AM! I kept that one till the mid 90's! When I sold it it was almost perfect with only 32K miles! I have had a lot of muscle cars & some that were faster than the TA but man it was a cool car for a young man! My daughter was a little kid then & called the Trans Am "Our Race Car"!
That's a super nice Blazer but those 400s were most definitely NOT "super tough"..I mean its neat it has the top engine option but those engines were plagued with issues especially overheating from the siamesed bores.I had two of them new for my buisness and had no luck with either.I changed both out for 350s early on and did ok with them.
Bought a 76 Blazer used because my truck would not carry all the kids. Was loaded and my wife loved it except for the color ( it was butterscotch) Sand blasted it a few years later and painted it white. It has aluminum mags and just shone!!!!! 8 years later I sold it for what I had in it and bought a van ( darn) Should have parked it out back. Best running 400 I had Hind sight is 20/20 Great rig in the snow
Its funny how Dennis arrived on TV as a quier unassuming friend of Richard Rawlings. He turns out to be a brighter star than Richard will ever be. Denis, l know thar 400 SB were notorious for overheating. I have a friend who did everything he could think of to correct the problem. Finally he put a Eldelbrock high volumn pump on it which fixed the problem. Just thought l would mention that if you haven't heard of or run into the problem.
Dennis I have a 78 k10 pickup my question is my front grill and headlights are the style of 79 could it be a late year 78 and the started putting 79 stuff on it????
Dennis, I don't understand why you had a problem with the color match. My paint supplier has a color match camera. A perfect match everytime. Love the vinyl on the sides. I wonder how well that holds up with age.
I wish GM would go back to that kinda Blazer again! I had at one time a 72 and 76 Blazer they were a blast to drive. Dang things would go through snow and easy to park. In fact I wish I owned that one!
All the talk about the nice trans and motor mounts and you never showed them. Love the K5 I started doing body work in 74 at a GMC dealership and worked on a ton of those when they were new. Famous for poor fit and finish on the bodys. Some customers had us reshim and realign panel fit on new trucks. Fender emblems always went back on with the push in barrel clips at our shop so we could paint with the emblems off but panels on.
@11:00 through to 11:20 you can see a line in the bodywork shining in the light that isn't right. Mid wheel arch of the passenger front guard, just above the trim line.
Love what you did with these 2 also im like you a big fan of BFG all terrain tyres for my own truck. Thanks for such good entertainment love all your videos

Yeah, it should have the tripod mirrors and the engine does look black, maybe it's just because it's dark, but they didn't show it very well.
Correct me if I am wrong but those door mirrors did not come out till 1980, in 1978 they had the 3 bar style mirrors on the doors.

Did you see how he almost set his coffee down next to all the paperwork and then reconsidered. Lol. Wiseman.
Lmao, ya also saw him nearly open the passenger door to far near the engine on the engine stand.....the young man walking with him saw it and grabbed the engine and rolled it out of the way...haha
So many shows use cheap cameras , with yours it’s perfect video!!! Bravo!! No BIGFOOT footage!!!
It’s been a long hard struggle but I’ve gotten everything back with the exception of my hands…my left hand wont open all the way and the right
won’t close all the way.
Beautiful K5, my uncle had one just like this one, color combo and the red interior exactly the same!
Treating friends family and employees nicely on your way to fame and fortune is nothing short of classy. Nice guys CAN finish first... and here is an example.
DENNIS AWSOME BLAZER .I HAD THE SAME ONE. BRAND NEW IN 78 SILVER BLACK TOP RALLYS SMALLER BFS.MINE HAD 350 4 BARREL DUAL EXHAUST 410 POSI REAR.RED INTERIOR WITH WHITE TRIM MY SEATS WERE VINYL HIGH BACK BUCKETS. NO POWER WINDOWS OR LOCKS. MINE HAD SLIDING REAR WINDOWS WITH WING WINDOWS.BEST LOOKING TRUCK ON THE ROAD BACK IN 1978 THANKS TOM
I love how Dennis presents the projects; that K-5 is Amazing!
Choosing the Black for 2 tone was the right choice, made the over all appeal Special & Just Right. Awesome K5. ~~~ Romon in Review
Anyone know how common a 454 was in a 2wd 1977 Suburban? I have one with a th400, 12 bolt, has a trailering special emblem on it.
Same as Ford Imperial Gold on Australian Falcons. 17 variants, depending on date of manufacture,
Very horrible and time consuming.
Scottsdale wax the MIDDLE trim level, above ustom and Custom Deluxe. 400's were everywhere back then! hardly rare.
Uncle Dennis I really Like K5 Blazers and I would let you BUFU me for that one........its Niceeeee!!!!
Denis, l know thar 400 SB were notorious for overheating. I have a friend who did everything he could think of to correct the problem. Finally he put a Eldelbrock high volumn pump on it which fixed the problem. Just thought l would mention that if you haven't heard of or run into the problem.
Dennis, you just can’t put a Ferrari and a Corvette in the same sentence, unfortunately 🥴🤷♂️🤷♂️
Dennis enough with the Columbian Blow, its got you dilusional.... The Chevrolet 400 is garbage!
I been watching coffe walk seen every episode love the content I've never heard Alex disagree with Dennis . Not once!, 🤐🤐🤐🤔🤔🤔
Love what you did with these 2 also im like you a big fan of BFG all terrain tyres for my own truck. Thanks for such good entertainment love all your videos
Love that K5 and Snowball is a great name for it.
hey dennis thanx for that lil tidbit about the spiral shocks,....had no idea they were faactory ,..still have them on the front of my K10 since 84 i guess....
You should see my 12,890 1985 Z28. It had 10,300 last spring when I bought it.
Oh boy. The blazer was Hollywood bad ass truck.😊😊 I love so much the truck and I like the color.
The violet handle aerobically wriggle because salad accidentally multiply unlike a gifted bay. simple, adventurous stream
A lot of colors are like that, specially mixed colors are impossible, but they are normally confined to high dollars hot rods, just sayin',been there.
Well done, You mad a great job of this looks amazing, I think you made the right call on the wrap it looks good and will add good protection too..
100%
had a '79 blazer that was my first truck. Wasn't nearly in the condition this one was in though, the previous owner got drunk one day and decided to take a hammer to it. Drove it around while I was in high school. then sold it to someone who restored it. It's still out there I believe.
