I went to a punk exhibition a couple months ago and totally freaked over the zine section. This video has inspired me to actually make one! Think I'm gonna do one about the UK pop punk music scene I've discovered since moving over here.
Loved the editing in this video! I work in magazine publishing and I LOVE the breath of fresh air that is zines - no advertising, just pure, raw content. So awesome!
When my friends and I were in school, in the days before Facebook, we made little booklets once a week about who was going out with who, which teachers you should avoid this week because they were in a bad mood, which teachers were leaving, doodles and funny poems etc. We were only about 12, we only ever made about 20 a week and looking back it was all super trivial, but to 12 year old me, they were the topics I was passionate about. So I suppose that was my first foray into zines! It's a format I love the concept of seeing it properly for the first time now! Thanks for (re)introducing me!
So we had someone from the largest public library in our city come in to our class to talk about zines and he showed this video to our freshman, high school, fine arts connections class. It was SO cool to see him showing a video from a youtuber I watch EVERYDAY! You're an educational image to our art class!! :D
This is why i'm subscribed to your channel. Not because you're a book tuber (though, that's how I found you) but because you constantly show us worlds we didn't even know previously existed.
I share this video with my 7th graders to start them off with the comfortable, no-judgement approach to art making. So thank you for this wonderful, well thought out and beautifully presented video.
OH MY GOD! THAT'S IT! I've been looking for a format for this idea I've had for FOUR YEARS! I've heard of zines before but never pictured like this... I've got it now! I'm so excited!!!!!! THANK YOU, ARIEL!
Thank you for sharing the spirit of making zines with us! The bit about "being scared of creating something creative but doing it anyway" is so real and empowering. :)
I just started to make one the second this video ended. It's going to be full of poems and artwork that I made half asleep/awake in the middle of the night.
You just changed my life. I have been struggling with my creativity for a while now, since I moved to London three years ago, and now I am trying to find any outlet I can to let out years of 'confinement'. However, I have an incredible fear of failure, of not being good enough - not to mention my very poor means. I just opened a blog and an Instagram page, but it just feels like it is not enough. I think a zine might be my next step. Thank you, seriously.
I've been working on a zine about struggles I've gone through in my personal life and for the last few months I've definitely felt uninspired and just wanted to give up because I was scared it'd be immediately rejected. this honestly inspired me so much that today after school im going whole hog. why do something and and stop halfway because you're afraid, yknow? Thank you very much for uploading this video.💝💝
Ever since i was little, my best friend and I have been making zines for each other in holidays and birthdays in which we would explain why we love the other and write little poems. We still do it😂... But hey, now I finally know what they are called.
My creativity pool has been dry as of lately. However, this video was a great refresher and now I'm up to create with some nice ideas. Thanks for being lovely, Ariel.
Whenever I don't feel my most creative you come up with a video that just gets the inspiration flowing left, right and centre! Thank you for being so inspiring Ariel, I'm definitely going to be making a zine in the very near future!
This is incredible! Well done... and some of my favorite people are included! Can't wait to check out Puffin Food. "One of the best parts about zines is the absolute rejection of being precious with the thing." What a freeing concept. :) xx
I find it impossible that you just so happen to make this video just as I am wondering about how to express myself and about zines. Thanks so much for motivating me to get started on a new project :)
I tried making some zines last year. I've been so stressed lately and I need a creative and intellectual outlet. Thank you for making this video and reminding me about how much fun and interesting zines are. I'm going to make a bunch tomorrow!
Hooray for someone talking about zines! I hope that many people are inspired to make their own! I've been a zine lover and collector for a LONG time and I love them. So fantastic that you're into making zines. Again, so cool that you're going to introduce these to a youtube generation of people who love to read and write. Fantastic video.
I was making some "newsletters" in the mid-to-late '90s and then later I learned about zines through the internet. I lived in the middle of nowhere so I ordered from zine distros (there are still many out there but a few of the ones I used to buy from are long gone now, sigh) and I noticed that people buy zines through etsy a lot these days (I have now & then - just search for zines) and there were communities on LiveJournal that I bought zines through as well. Also happened upon some in various bookstores when I would visit a bigger city. Just google "how to make a zine" and you'll see a lot come up in the search for getting started. Have fun!
I use to love making these. I had no idea they had a proper name. I do not even remember the things I put in them. Nice to know what I was doing actually developed into something.
Awesome! Great work on this video. I created zines back in the early to mid 1990s, and began my writing career there. I had assumed that modern computers (blogs, social media) had rendered zines extinct, but it's great to see they're still around. It's fun to create something that's simple and heartfelt and creatively free. Anything goes. Much thanks!
I've been wanting to start learning book binding and creation skills ever since I stumbled upon Sea Lemon's channel, but the full journals and sketchbooks that she demonstrates are a bit intimidating. This looks like the PERFECT way to get my feet wet in the basics ^.^ Thank you so much Ariel!! I love the format of this video too :D
Cinematography on point and the subject very inspiring! I never thought about zines and fanzines because its never talked about and its always shown as a niche medium.
Before this video I had never heard about zines, but now I can't stop reading about them! I love your poetry and the fact that you published a zine has me jacked up, especially bc I am already a fan of a few other people I recognize that collabed with you on this. I notice you said physical and PDF copies were available but on the link I only see PDF. :-( Still going to get the PDF though!
I am inspired by The Atomic Elbow zine, now I'm going to try and start my own surrounding pro wrestling, progressive politics and underground hiphop/hardcore music. Thanks for this video, now I know how to get started!
I loved this video. I've been in a creative slump lately and this inspired me to get back to doing what I love. Also, random advice: if you don't have a stapler, look up a video on how to saddle stitch with staples!
This is so cool, Ariel! Great way to celebrate and spread inspiration and creativity. Good thing you uploaded this on a Friday, 'cause now all I want to do is create! Is this going to be a multi-issue thing?
I am LEGIT jealous of that stapler! I didn't know you could get them like that. I love this video! It's waay better than the announcement I did for mine. I babbled about it for like 5 minutes and didn't even get into what a zine was. I guess mine isn't a real zine though, in a true sense. You're totally right, about how it's meant to be rough n ready and I spent 6 months on one :) Very excited to be a part of this!
I've always wanted to create something like this. But too afraid to do so coz I'm really bad at art. Now I'm inspired to make a zine. Thank you for making this video, Ariel 💙
This was such a great video! This was the encouragement I needed to make my own zine, I've been contemplating it for a while now. and now I'm going ahead with it. Such an awesome video: creative, fun, informational, you're an incredible video maker ^-^
This was so great! Now I really want to make my own zine! Thank you for the well-needed inspiration, Ariel! PS: I bought your zine, and love it so far! It's definitely something I'll keep referring back to for a long time!
mine is called UFO GRRL and i sell it on etsy. i learned the term "community" zine from your video, and that's what it is. i just made a video about my new zine idea for "Starseeds", who are basically people having some sort of E.T. contact. volume 3 may be a per zine
I'm really grateful I watched your video. I have stuff I want to say but don't want to offend people. Plus most people don't want to hear about my worries or politics. Your video has inspired me to make a zine. Thank you😊 No idea what happens after though😄
Funnily enough my first year of design at university we were to make a zine. So I handcrafted a zine crossed between the red string of fate and astrology. Needless to say, I got an F... To me, a zine isn't something that can be marked. It's something personal, something that means something different to someone else. I hadn't wanted to make another one since - it's been two years now - but this makes me actually want to give it another shot. :)
hi ariel, i love this - seen/zine it and bought it - i had to, so many inspiring people in there! also feels like i'm gonna need to reboot MY zine which i started at school (almost 20 years ago, oh my). might send you one back when it's finished! :)
I would like to checkout the Zine that your created! Unfortunately, the link that you provided in the show notes is no longer valid. Please let me know if you have new link to the Zine. Thank you!
My college professor showed us this video because we were making zines.
Same but i'm in 8th grade
This was so freaking creative and inspirational. The filming style was so clever.
Thank you so much!!
I went to a punk exhibition a couple months ago and totally freaked over the zine section. This video has inspired me to actually make one! Think I'm gonna do one about the UK pop punk music scene I've discovered since moving over here.
This is the best! I remember you going to that exhibition in a vlog! I can't wait to see what you make!

GUESS WHO'S GOING TO SPEND ALL OF TOMORROW MAKING ZINES
Hahaha YAAAAAAY!!!! Make sure to share something with me, I so want to see!!
I made a Zine about how to procrastinate for school :)
ooh, that's a good idea! ...I think I should do the same instead of studying for my uni exam in 4 days 🤔
I didn't even know zines was even a thing
Welcome to a whole new glorious world!
This is why i'm subscribed to your channel. Not because you're a book tuber (though, that's how I found you) but because you constantly show us worlds we didn't even know previously existed.
Did I see Bookington Wallace is premiering some new work in Puffin Food? I've been waiting for more of his genius for years!!
Oh you saw correctly. This might be his finest work yet!
I share this video with my 7th graders to start them off with the comfortable, no-judgement approach to art making. So thank you for this wonderful, well thought out and beautifully presented video.

I've got it now! I'm so excited!!!!!! THANK YOU, ARIEL!
OH MAN. I'M SO PUMPED FOR YOU!!
I wrote zines back in high school and traded them with people from other states and countries. It was a rad experience.
i was searching for a video to show to my 40 students as we begin our section on zines. this is so great! thank you so much.
Thank you for sharing the spirit of making zines with us! The bit about "being scared of creating something creative but doing it anyway" is so real and empowering. :)
I LOVED this video Ariel
Thanks so much, Fran! I love your videos and was excited to see you in my comments :D
I just started to make one the second this video ended. It's going to be full of poems and artwork that I made half asleep/awake in the middle of the night.
This seriously makes me so happy!
+Ariel Bissett I'm so glad it does. Thank you for making this video!

I can't believe this. Today I spent my whole day reading about zines and you made a video about it! I love this.
THE STARS MUST HAVE ALIGNED! ✨
My creativity pool has been dry as of lately. However, this video was a great refresher and now I'm up to create with some nice ideas. Thanks for being lovely, Ariel.
I feel like zines are a concept I'm all about but just never thought of. I love your attitude :)

Love your passion, enthusiasm, and sincerity. Well-spoken with good points. Love that your filming is creative, but still simple. Loved it!
I find it impossible that you just so happen to make this video just as I am wondering about how to express myself and about zines. Thanks so much for motivating me to get started on a new project :)
yaay I used to make them when I was very young but I didn't know they are called zines ! I love them I will go make one now !

This brings out my love for Riot Grrrl. (:
Haha I was writing in my journal about new years resolutions, and I started watching this video. New resolution for 2019.

I love the content of this, and I also I love the way you present information. Engaging and still very clear. Thanks for sharing!

THIS IS SUCH A GREAT VIDEO WTF STOP BEING SO GOOD AT EXPLAINING THINGS THANK YOU
I had no idea this even existed, but it looks awesome and you really made me want to make one!
Zines remind me a lot of a Wreck this Journal in the sense that they are both about creating freely and being interpreted however you'd like!
What a cool way to announce your zine, Ariel! :) Super excited to read it!
I had never heard of these before! I think I tried making my own when I was a kid lol. Looks like I found a new hobby.
This is the most inspiring video I have watched in a long time.
Ariel, I love how especially recently you put so much effort and creativity in your videos! Keep up the good work :)
Thank you so so much!!
Very nicely done Ariel! Got me out of a zine creative road-block
The way you expressed yourself in this video was filled with so much passion. It's really inspiring :)
This is so cool, Ariel! Great way to celebrate and spread inspiration and creativity. Good thing you uploaded this on a Friday, 'cause now all I want to do is create! Is this going to be a multi-issue thing?

How do you copy your zines/what's the best way to make multiple copies (esp. if you want the pages to be double sided)?
Hi Ariel, where do you usually buy zines? You mentioned you got one at a poetry event, do you know of other places that sell them? Or websites? Thanks
Francesca Guiducci Etsy
Funnily enough my first year of design at university we were to make a zine. So I handcrafted a zine crossed between the red string of fate and astrology. Needless to say, I got an F... I hadn't wanted to make another one since - it's been two years now - but this makes me actually want to give it another shot. :)
This is a great video. But I have one question. Are Zines strictly poetry or do they contain other forms of prose as well?
VampwolfWarrior zines can be literally anything you want
Wow love the idea and video! I didn't know there was an actual name and concept for this!
hi ariel, i love this - seen/zine it and bought it - i had to, so many inspiring people in there! also feels like i'm gonna need to reboot MY zine which i started at school (almost 20 years ago, oh my). might send you one back when it's finished! :)
This was a great video. I'm going to make one soon, you got me excited.
I would love to look at the zine but the link seems to be broken.
I love your videos! They're always so creative!
I would like to checkout the Zine that your created! Unfortunately, the link that you provided in the show notes is no longer valid. Please let me know if you have new link to the Zine. Thank you!
I didn't know that that's what they were called. I haven't made one in a long time, but when I was 10-ish I made one about patriotism.
OK CAN I JUST TELL YOU HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS VIDEO LIKE YES THANK YOU I AM IN LOV IM MAKING A ZINE RN
Hi Ariel...I tried to get the zine but the link says "could not find the page".. you could probably help me with that... loved the idea...
Really enjoyed this. Thanks for introducing me to the world of zines.
I love this - super happy to have found your channel :)
This is such a great video, I really want to make a zine now!!
SO INSPIRATIONAL! IMMEDIATELY BUYING YOUR ZINE!!! You should make this a Thing!
ahhh this is why I love Ariel
Wow this makes me want to compile my digital collages into a zine! 😄
hey what was that device you were digitally drawing on? + do you know of any smaller devices
