  • With lots of misconception circulating around the internet, i'd like to take this opportunity to discuss the new HGV Driver test rules regarding the Reversing maneuver & the Coupling & Un-Coupling of trailers.
Also touch on the new rules of not needing a test to tow a caravan.

What gets me and still does to this day. I passed my test in 1996 so already have the grandfather rights to drive a class 3 and tow caravans etc etc. In 2006 I passed my PCV test in a manual bus at 42 foot long. Years later I've had enough of this profession and want to drive a class 2, I'm not interested in class 1 at all. So a fully laden coach weighs 18 tonnes and can be well over 40 feet long and has the most precious cargo in the world, yet I am not allowed to drive a class 2 lorry substantially shorter in length with the exact same weight. I can accept a class 1 needs a separate test this stands to reason but the class 2 gets me. Am I being unreasonable in my assumptions and If so please can somebody explain? I'm aware there's a petition already on its way to parliament but I'd like other peoples views.

I totally agree with you mate. I've been driving coaches for 20yrs. My coach is 50ft long can hold upto 61 pax & weighs in around 18tons unladen. How on earth can I not be qualified to drive a class 2 hgv? For example the latest job I've just done is transporting the Indian cricket team around for 9 weeks. Fully loaded worth 100s of millions but I cant drive a class 2 with parcels or food in the back. I fully understand there should be training for strapping loads & loading the truck etc but surely not a test for over 1.5k. It's madness 😠

I think the idea of the reversing and coupling test being seperate from the main test might be to ease the pressure on the day . I suppose as long as you can demonstraight over and over you can do it safely to the tutor a few days prior, it doens't need to be tested on the day .

Weren't these rules just going back to pre 1997? Were all those drivers bad and crashing all the time? Class 2 was only there to get more money. You do not need to do Class 2 to do Class 1. You don't need to go out with your Dad to have any interest in driving a HGV.

The same will apply to companies offering class C training. The idea is to free up examiners for C+E tests but as an ex Class C delivery driver I agree with you its asking for trouble going straight to C+E. It's all mad. The caravan thing will be fun as they will be more on the sides on the motorways in the summer. Also why he hell. Is there no MOT for a trailer as they sit all year then they just take them down the road and fall to bits. Then on to the new test it's more money for the test guys and it's 3 tests in the end as you forgot the driver CPC on top of it all which you need to keep taking. The guy that did mine was talking about how to load a truck but funny part was I did recovery work and I asked about that he said I donot know. Well why the hell am I doing it also he know sod all about the job to. And today this is the best vidio have seen for some time. And yes I agree with all you have said today and yes things would work if the next day delivery from the you can shop here company was stopped and the trucks used to move food. Also why the hell not use the shops that your shutting down in the towns as when there gone and you need something and you nets down you can not buy it. I only shop in shops as when there gone they will not be back. The way we are going town will not have shops as every one is happy to sit on the net and by that way then people say there no shops in the town there all gone we'll think the next time you go on the net to buy things. Sorry for the rant but yes I am with you on all you say. Drive safe and keep up your good work.

I literally passed my class 1 a week before the new rules came out for the class 1 tests. For me honestly class 2 was a massive help for me doing my class 1. Getting to know how a wagon works, the sizes etc. . When I done my assessment drive for my class 1 lessons I think I got told somewhere around 4 days training including the test, how long would a student who's only driven a car have to be given? That surely would slow down the training schools massively training all these new students who have no hgv experience whatsoever? In my eyes this wont help quicken up getting trained drivers out there it will surely slow it? Or put pressure on training schools to maybe cram as much training into a 4-5 day period as possible and hope for the best ?

You totally forgot to mention all of those Drivers such as myself that hold a Grandfather Licence, which entitles us to Drive 7.5ton (C1+C1E) and Ambulance (D1+D1E).
I have been driving 7.5ton Trucks for years on and off, doing multi Drop.
I went for my Class 2 (C) 2 years ago, so got my CPC and Tacho upto date. I found driving a Class 2 not much harder than driving a 7.5ton, as the Class 2 is slightly bigger and longer, but the same style of driving.
However I failed the Driving Test 1st time on Reverse, just because the left rear tyre touched the white line, although I drive perfectly all through the test. If the Government really wanted to ease this issue, they could just upgrade all those with a 7.5ton license and proven experience to a Class 2. And companies could also train 7.5ton Drivers upto a Class 2, then progress onto a Class 1.
But no they won't, to simple for them. They clearly have another agenda.

Deady - the information i got from a trainer, was this; that whoever's training you is most likely your accessor on the reversing and coupling/uncoupling, now lets say that you are part of the HGV apprenticeship scheme; you do your test with flying colours (since its just a drive), now because the company thats training you internally has their own trainer through your apprenticeship and the company wants to start making money out of you, they pass your reversing regardless - more efficient for company capita if the delivery gets done, rather than taking extra time training which in return using that extra training time that could be used to put through another driver.
    Thoughts on this?

As I said in my post above I have a former colleague with 20 years UK and continental touring experience who would love his class 2 but can't afford the training and test. Due to covid killing the coach industry when our operator closed down he could only get a job driving Asda home delivery vans for 9 quid an hour and is doing double shifts to make ends meet. I know many more guys making do on low wages doing school contracts Monday to Friday.
Those who have held a D should be granted a C with CE provisional as long as their medical and DCPC are in date IMHO.

I don't understand what the issue is. You're trained firstly in a c2 for an x amount of hours so you can get used to the whole aspect of driving one, when your instructor thinks you're competent he will then proceed to train you on the c1...whilst also "training" you how to reverse and the other bits, once he thinks you're competent you take your drive with DVSA to certify you... You then choose you can work within the c1 or c2 sector, you've been trained and certified on both, hardly someone "stepping from a car to a lorry" without any further instructions. They're hardly going to certify you if you're shite and can't drive a c1.

They should never have changed the driving license laws from before 1997. Because back you could drive the C1, C1+E, D1, D1+E and B+E on your normal license. Then they changed the law 1st January where as you have to do the test for the above which in my opinion was the thing they ever did, because I've tried to apply for some jobs but I had to have C1 and C1+E and never got the jobs I didn't have the license to do it. If I had my C1 license I could get the experience and go for my class 2, I can't even do that yet someone Who passed before 1997 can and I find it abit discriminating tbh. He went from that to piloting the IOW ferry which is a HUUUGE jump in size. If you get training and pass there is no issue with sudden jump in size. No need for gradual increments. So you take your motorcycle test and then have to wait 2 years before you can go up to a bigger bike, but wait we can go from taking your test in a mini then jump to an artic! What?? No logic at all. Surly making the test a 50/50 split with the testing centres would be better? Force the industry to have 50% of all tests class 1 and 2. That would ensure the more experienced drivers would be moved up. Yes let’s have more drivers. But seriously let’s get the right drivers in the right trucks. There are already too many accidents. That class 2 experience is essential. Yes I’m a Hgv driver. Deady thank you!

As someone who has class2 and an expired CPC I struggle to understand why I should go back to driving... What is the motivation for it now?
This country needs to reconsider it's approach to life and priorities on a huge scale but all I see are people crying about Brexit wanting their slave labour back from Eastern Europe to pack their goods, drive their trucks and clean their toilets all the while under paying and over working them. The attitude is "I don't care as long as it's done and it's not costing me money". How many drivers hours are wasted sat around waiting to be loaded.... Thousands per company every single week.

  • @That_beetle_idiot
    @That_beetle_idiot 3 года назад

I don't see how this is going to ease the driver shortage at all because the new passes are going to be perceived as far less qualified than those of us already with CE licences. Who will give them a start? There are still firms out there wanting 6 months, 12 months, or 2 years experience.
I passed my CE in 2012 and after driving coaches all over Britain and Europe since 1990 and nobody would even give me an interview never mind a start. I carried on coach driving until August this year when my operator closed down and I was redundant. I started applying for jobs and was honest that I had a licence but hadn't used it. Guess what? Not a single reply. I live in Northamptonshire where the shortage is very apparent. I started this week on rigids doing store deliveries for a supermarket, I'll be getting in house CE training in the new year.
The reverse exercise wasn't fit for purpose anyway, bears no relation to real world reversing onto bays etc.
What would make sense would have been to scrap the C test for anyone who has held a class D for over 2 years and grant them a C with a CE provisional providing their medical and DCPC are up to date. Covid has decimated the coach industry and has put a lot of experienced drivers out of work, most rigids are shorter than a coach, these guys could easily adapt.
A former colleague of mine desperately wants his C but can't afford it, he's got 20 years coach experience but is now driving Asda vans for 9 quid an hour and doing double shifts to make ends meet.
These new measures won't help the driver shortage, the only result is going to be less safe roads at least in the short term.

I think the best and most productive thing the government could do, is do away with the C1 test and again let everyone who has passed their car test to drive up to 7.5 ton light haulage small lorries. This is where people used to get a foot into HGV driving and gain experience within the haulage/HGV logistics, which I think is a must do allowing the necessary learning on light lorries then after a minimum of 1 year they should be allowed to go for class 1. The class 1 test price should be lowered and more accessible to more people……..then there’s the pay, facilities and hours…….

So I'm not going to touch on everything as for the most part i completely agree with what you said. However I think there should be some special circumstances in which you can jump strait to class 1. I've been driving busses for the last few years which are longer than a class 2 and can be around the same weight also but I'd have to go sit my class 2 and then class 1 which to me personally makes no sense. Someone in my shoes should be able to jump strait to class 1. Also agree with you in terms of the money. I cant afford the 2k+ for my class 2 then class 1 but this change means I can afford to jump strait to class 1. I don't think the actual test however should have been changed as you said with the reversing and un-cuppling to me personally think their the main things that should be tested🤣 anyways loving the vids keep it up deady😘👊

The other issue is training centers will have mostly class 2 units and only a couple of class 1 units for training so will be difficult to train and use the units for tests so how will they be able to uptake more tests?
Not sure how much extra danger there would be just to only undertake 1 test you can do class 2 then go straight back no extra experience and undertake class 1 test anyway. It has always been a case of training is what you take away.
We have yet to fine out how the cookie will croumble revers and couple/uncouple will be.
No training for towing up 3.5 Ton trailer will end in tears.
Before 1997 you could not have had a driving licence and just done car class 1 in 1 go with 1 test was known as LL other than that with a B car licence you got towing and 7.5Ton.

Trailers for cars without a test - no! Straight to Class 1 - not sure but I think it could be a wrong idea. Coupling/uncoupling and reversing tested by a third party - could be done by a third party during training if they get their act together. Like most tests, tutors only teach you to pass a test. Do all loading bays look like the reversing area in the test centre i.e. a flat area of concrete with a load of squashed cones? I think not! I always have the story of the young lad who`s tipper ran out of control going down into Bath. He had been driving HGVs for barely a week when the truck ran away and several pedestrians were killed. It transpired the brakes were in very poor condition and the company had the book thrown at them. The driver didn`t have the skill to control the truck but was given an absolute discharge.

One of the reason I think people don’t want to be Hgv drivers is because they come on here looking to get info from Truck vloggers and all they hear is negatively as avid truck vlog watcher I barely watch any more as it’s just full of these vloggers twisting about the Industry I past two years ago and it’s took all this time for to get job that wasn’t few day here I pull for Amazon now and I know what your saying with food should be priority but some people order food from Amazon and will we see you pull for Asda or Tesco soon or you gonna stick with your cushy number at Hermes lol no ones gonna leave cushy little job like Amazon and Hermes and go pull for Tesco or Asda and have to load/unload and trying reverse in to tight spaces from road side for similar pay

The module 3 test is the driving test for the class c and d test.
The module 3 is split into 3a and 3b.
3a consists of the reversing manoeuvre and the coupling and uncoupling and is assessed by approved dvsa authorised assessors. 3a takes place off road so in a private land so out of the way of the public.
The 3b is the practical on the road test but can only be taken if you pass 3a. If you don’t pass 3a even if booked on you can’t do your training for 3b and you also need to have 3a test certificate to take your 3b test.
The coupling and uncoupling is straight forward but the reverse is tricky for new drivers and even experienced lgv drivers as articulated Vechile steer from the 5th wheel. If you don’t pass the 3a part you can’t do 3b.

Absolutely craziness deady I just don’t get it. I heard that the reversing and coupling and uncoupling will be down to the 3rd party which is the company who takes on that driver and they will assess them. Crazy crazy crazy. x

With cars, they have missed the chance to retest car drivers who have not otherwise had another test since the day they passed 1st time around.
And, I failed the C1 twice on the reverse, time I passed did it in one go no shunts. Paid my own tests/training.
Its a backwards reasoning ... and putting money over safety, or just forgetting safety total.
Reversing is the hardest bit, and does need probably more assessment than going forwards. And doing it under DVLA test conditions, all on the day.

Car drivers could always tow a caravan as long as they did not exceed 3.5t combined weight or not exceeding 80% of the weight of the vehicle. so removing the test is not as bad as it sound as I think it is just going up to 4.2t combined (correct if I am wrong) as going straight for the class one I am well up for that as I am looking to get it myself. Its Going to save me some wedge, that I am struggling to save. But I am hoping that I get a few lessons in a class 2 during trianing just incase I need to drive one.

Deady i have looked into how some people pay for the training and tests that cant afford it and found that there is a few options available.....1 is gov funding and the other is by doing an apprenticeship.....Car driver into a class 1? No,get some experience in a rigid first to learn the ropes...as for cars pulling a wobblebox without a test? its just nuts, alot wont have the foggiest idea on how weight is placed in 1 of these things....

I think the third party will be your school. And if so it’s dangerous due if it’s done buy you school there is pressure for the school to pass you to keep the pass rate above 80%. The changes have been made by people who have 0 clue. And it is only going to end in tears 😭.

  • @RamaMono

So doesn't this mean that two tests are now just one long expensive one putting off a lot of people who cant afford it. When I passed my test all I drove was 12 tonners for a while and had to drive an 18 tonner and struggled for abit as it was harder to see when reversing. Plus what company in their right mind would take on a newly passed class 1 driver with no class 2 experience?

  • @kevroberts4754
    @kevroberts4754 3 года назад

Just because you’re entitled to do something doesn’t mean you should do it! Pass your test in a class 1, training providers have class 2 vehicles so for the less confident people or people who want to learn how to drive a class 2 vehicle can go to a training provider whether they have passed class 1 or not, transport companies have their own driving assessors so they could show new starters how to use whichever vehicle they will be driving as for cars and trailers anyone who has held the category for 3 years and has experience can sit with a newly qualified driver or even train them up to pass their test, if you’re a responsible person you will get the training you feel you need by going to these training providers and asking, after all you were going to pay them to train you up to test standard anyway, now you can still do the training and get some experience without the test, when my kids pass their driving tests I’m competent and confident enough to show them how to tow a trailer, this could be a nice little earner for us class 1 drivers in our spare time helping friends/family tow a trailer or caravan. Dvsa have had a massive recruitment drive for new examiners to cover additional tests I’d imagine training providers will also take on more driver trainers because of the increase too.

I took my Class 1 test about 2 months ago, and unfortunately failed after going over the kerb on a tight corner. I was confident and aced my reverse and coupling procedure! After that, I didn’t wanna pay upwards of £400 to do it again, and now they’re changing the rules like this, what a joke! 😂

Re the shortage Dvla aren't helping with their backlogs , surely processing a straightforward licence application wouldn't take much training so get some temp staff in to clear the back log . Another thing re the shortage... drivers waiting hours to be loaded / unloaded etc, thats just adding to the problem, warehouses etc, sort your act out

I rang the training company that I originally booked in my class 2 with this last Monday to see if they had any info on these changes, they had no idea about when the changes are supposed to be coming in and how it’s supposed to work. All they could say was I’d be trained over 6 days, with class 2 driving for the first 2 days and then class 1 for the rest, instead of just 4 days and it will be 8hrs a day of training instead of 4hours. I’m just waiting for them to get back to me. They also said that they were having to find and purchase a couple more class 1 units.

The way I see it is
    Drivers go to training center
Training centers take new drivers out for a week in a class 2 to utilize their fleet and enable learners to practice gears, size and braking
Then when happy with student progress to a class 1 with same school
The test center could then asses couple and uncouple also reversing of the class 1 in the same way my CPC was assessed by a licensed trainer at my school
So it would still take about 2 weeks, and cost about the same in time and money but 1/2 the DVLA testers workload
Probably not the best idea ever in my opinion BUT 🤷‍♂️

If anyone can recommend a decent school in the manchester/Stockport or Cheshire area with decent detailed tuition would be greatly appreciated 🤟
