I love the masquerade ball, because if you notice, the only two people not wearing masks are Bruce and Selena. Because this is their mask. Their true identity is Batman and Catwoman.

The best catwoman ever!
Michelle Phiffer is the best ever Catwomen.
The ballroom scene in this isn't talked about enough, extremely brilliant flow.
Michelle's performance in that scene was particularly captivating.
This movie made Catwoman iconic. Every young boy had the biggest crush on Michelle Pfeiffer after this. Absolutely iconic. This was a darker movie, but it really made it stand out. It's not my favorite Batman movie overall, but I do enjoy it. There are parts of this that are just so well done and creative from set/costume design to scenes such as the ball when they discover each other's alter-ego. Great movie filled with so much nostalgia.

You saw "Gotham"! The versions of "The Riddler" and "The Penguin" were the first versions that I'm aware of to not be heterosexual and as you saw, Danny's version of "The Penguin" is and he used up so many good puns too! 😅

This is the BEST 'Batman' movie ever!!!!
The darkest and controversial Batman movie ever made. McDonald's refused to sell any of their toys to promote the film due to the violent content and that the film was too scary for kids.

@@nebulous8389 Depends on what dark is. Dark isn't cutting heads of or showing gore or nudity anymore. It's the tone, message and overlying athmosphere. For instance, you would probably argue that star wars can get dark. It never has, not once. Not even close. It doesn't live in that area, it's focused on young people, kids and young adults. Anyone can like it though. But Dark is not what your parents told you that you couldn't watch as a kid. Dark is what you don't want to see as an adult. What kids don't want to see is scary. I guess only an adult can understand what I mean... It's not exactly simple to grasp. The US is insanely dark for instance. But americans don't seem to understand why. Kids killing kids is horrifying. But the dark part is that nobody really cares. It's all getting worse. See my point?

I'd forgotten that the Christopher Walken character's name is Max Schreck. That's pretty clearly a tribute to the actor of that name who starred in Nosferatu, the 1922 German silent adaptation of Dracula. (Dracula's name was changed to Count Orlock in that movie, because it was made in violation of copyright, but that fooled nobody.) Nosferatu was one of the most innovative movies in the history of the development of film technique, and is generally considered a landmark masterpiece. The name "Schreck" is actually the German word for terror, so a lot of people have assumed, as I used to do, that is was a professional pseudonym for an actor playing Dracula; but no, it turns out that it actually was the actor's real name.

I saw this film with my grandma in theaters when I was 12 years old in that year 1992 and now in my 42 I still love this sequel Batman Returns directed by Tim Burton starring Michael Keaton, Michelle Pfeiffer, Danny DeVito, Christopher Walken and music score by Danny Elfman. Thank you guys great reaction awesome.

I love the symbolism they did at the dance. Everyone was wearing a mask except Bruce and Selina. Bruce Wayne billionaire playboy is the mask and Batman is who he really is.
Best Batman film imo. The gothic style is what Batman should be like. Heck, the city is called GOTHAM for a reason 😂Michelle Pfeiffer is THE Catwoman. Nobody can touch her. Not only gorgeous but one of the finest actresses ever. DeVito as Penguin was brilliant (even if they did deviate from the comic with his character and background). And Keaton is excellent as Batman. On top of that, Burton's amazing visual style, the awesome, haunting, Danny Elfman score, as well as the great production design, makes this a masterpiece imo 😊
Incredibly underappreciated film. The dark tone and bittersweet end are all to its advantage.
15:51: Fun Fact - Michelle Pfeiffer not only extensively trained to learn how to use the bull whip for this scene, but she knocked the heads off the mannequins herself in one take (as well as the first take). After she playfully jump roped the whip, director Tim Burton yelled "cut" and entire crew erupted in cheering and applause.
Batman Returns is interesting in that it's the most "un-Batman" Batman movie ever made. It's a pure Tim Burton movie, and it's loud and proud. His distinctive visuals; all of the lonely freaks who are searching for meaning in their existence. I could just as easily see Edward Sissorhands and Ed Wood living in this version of Gotham City.

Tread carefully on the next Batman movies, if you plan to watch them. They didn’t age well, in terms of style. These are the Val Kilmer and George Clooney Batmans.

Michelle Pfeiffer's portrayal of Catwoman is my favorite out of any incarnation. Between her latex outfit, her makeup and the completely different tones of voice for the two sides of the same character are so purrfect. (Sorry, but I had to do a cat pun).
Michael Keaton Batman will return in The Flash.
Michael Keaton and Michelle Pfeiffer had dated for a year between 1988 to 1989 in real life. This movie was shot in 1991 Michael Keaton first fought the producers of the original batman movie because they wanted Michelle for the part of Vicki vale Michael won and the part was changed and given to Kim basinger he complained again when the producers wanted Michelle for catwoman this time he lost but was already contracted to play batman so he had to do it but wasn't happy as he stated it would be awkward to play love scenes with his ex girlfriend. After this he refused to play batman again saying he wasn't happy with the producers and he hated the costume....until now,he has recently put on the batman costume again for ' the flash' ( 2023 )

Batman ‘89 is my favorite of the Burton Batmans. But Batman returns gave Burton the tools to let him be himself.

Great movie. You should watch the Christopher Reeve Superman movies at least 1 (The first modern superhero movie) and 2 (Theatrical version ) . Also you should watch Darkman 1990 which is an original superhero Sam Rami made before he got to direct the Spiderman trilogy with a young Liam Nisson and Danny elfman score like this movie.
This is my favorite DC movie! As a kid I obviously didn't understand some of the "adult humor" that was in it 😅 For me, seeing this badass catwoman was super exciting as a kid. I enjoy it so much that its now tradition that I watch this during the Christmas holiday season with my family. As always, love your reactions! Glad y'all enjoyed this one!

The decision to add Catwoman to the final Bat-signal shot was made at the last minute, and filmed with a double standing in for Michelle Pfeiffer. And since that shot tracks up, from the street to the skyline, there's really nowhere she could actually be standing, in that shot. haha Even the people who worked on compositing the final shot said, essentially, 'It made no sense, but that's what they told us to do.'
This came out when I was 14, and is the sole reason why I could never get the obsession people had with the Nolan/ Bale Batman films. It’s like getting excited over McDonald’s when there’s a prime wagyu steak already sitting on the table.

Penguins speech to the penguin soldiers was always hype af. I'm pretty sure it's inspired by general pattons ww2 speech.

This is one of my favorite Batman movies. But this is the first time I noticed Bruce Wayne has a giant Bat Signal Light on top of his mansion that shines in his window when he is needed. Wouldn't people notice that? Well I guess that's what makes Burton's Batman movies so good because they are unrealistic and comic book like. Cuz also like, why would falling from a building and getting bit by cats suddenly make you a karate master and gymnast? Haha.
I like Michael Keaton Batman the best, and Nicholson is a more maniacal joker, and penguin here, is pretty Evil!

What you said about the kids watching this movie probably having nightmares of Penguin is spot on because back in '92 when Batman Returns came out, there was controversy where parents didn't think this movie was appropriate for children. Even though I definitely think that Batman Returns is the superior film over Batman89, this sequel didn't make as much money as the first movie in part because of those complaints that it was too dark and grotesque.
The strange thing is, was it really that much more dark than Batman? Maybe a bit, but Joker had some pretty disturbing moments and was murdering people left and right. Maybe it was the bittersweet end? Seems to me children are capable of handling a lot more than people give them credit for.

⭐ Danny DeVito was a great choice but very unfortunately this version of The Penguin was incomparably inferior to even the '67 TV version. (Vile grossness is not a substitute for quality character composition.)
⭐ Catwoman was greatly miscast. They should have cast Sean Young (who REALLY wanted the role BTW).
I was starting to figure out I'm gay when I first saw this film as a kid. Michelle's catwoman really confused me 😂
She came very close 🤏🏻 but didn't quie convince me otherwise.

To me this is as Tim Burton as it gets in a good way. His Alice in Wonderland is as Tim Burton as it gets in a bad way.

Thank you for sharing this reaction. I liked this movie except for the goofy slap-on remote control or the silly in-line conversion of the Batmobile. Tim Burton and Danny Devito succeeded in making the Penguin plausible as a menace.

These movies are awful, don’t waste your time
This is a very wonderful Gothic elegantly film. Besides being a comic book superhero story. The Tim Burton style is even darker in this and really shows you the art if macabre and nocturnal visions. I love the penguin origin. Its very Sorrowful an intresting. Gotham city structure is so fantastic to look at. They should of kept Batman in this type of style. You should watch Batman forever. That's a very neon city version.
This movie was and is terrible through and through. Watch Die Hard 4 it is five times better!
