Melbourne, Australia based band, Thornhill, make music that harkens to flavors of modern metalcore, showcasing what can be made of heavy rock and rock music when there are no borders. Where their debut album, ‘The Dark Pool’ touched fans with its mix of crushing riffage and atmospheric metalcore, their sophomore album ‘Heroine’ found Thornhill flexing their skills in the alternative and rock worlds, referencing the sonic tapestry from the likes of The Smashing Pumpkins and Red Hot Chili Peppers, to Silverchair and Deftones. Their Audiotree Live performance comes complete with elevated visuals and theatrics to match. During their interview with Audiotree Live Host, FINGY, the band chats about the making of 'Heroine', their aesthetic references, and their songwriting process. Check out Thornhill on Audiotree Live!

Dark pool songs hit different man, legendary
thats for sure
yes
Couldn’t agree more
@Togoladen those aren't songs from Dark Pool. Glad it was enjoyable though!
Dark Pool is the best Thornhill album
Starting with Coven is pure gold man. I encourage everyone who is on the fence about the new material to go see this band live. One of the best live bands in the scene man
Agreed. Saw them with Dayseeker before dayseeker blew up. What a feast, man
I was on the fence about the newer stuff before seeing it live, totally on board since though
Saw them support Polaris in Manchester, UK, a few months back. They absolutely stole the show. Hadn’t really listened to them before but they were absolutely flawless. Every record has been on repeat since.
Catching them on tour w/ Erra in June. I've been following them since their breakout EP "Butterfly", but it will be my first time seein' them.
@christofts857 Been pretty much the same. Went for silent planet and thornhill but thornhill completely stole the show and imo had the best live sound
My butt cheeks are clenched so tight right now
this is where we go when we die
Underrated comment😂
😂
An infinite loop of Thornhill playing their best songs live? I'll take it
8:10 anybody that seen them live knows this moments hits different
Definitely a cutting onions moment 😅
i saw them 2 times now and i dream of the moment everyone sings this or at least 80% of the room. last time in munich was already a good amount of people singing and it felt amazing
Chills every time. Going to see them in July again. Can't wait.
The greatest moment of their entire discography. Thornhill was already my favorite band in 2017 and then they started dropping the Dark Pool and knew it was solidified. But when I heard this track and specifically this moment I felt like I had transcended to a different dimension entirely. Literally texted every friend I had to listen immediately after lol.
WELL WHATS THE POINT OF LIIIIIIIIIIIFE, IF WE CANT BE TOGETHEEEEEEEEEEER, I NEED YOU HERE WITH MEEEEEEEEEEEE, I NEED YOU TO REMEMBEEEEEEEEEEEEEER
That drummer is so fun to watch. Pure talent!
Yes Ben is a beast on drums.
grooviest dude in the scene
The outro of Where We Go When We Die always gives me chills. So well written 💜
I listen to the whole album waiting for that outro. Absolutely love the send off!
When you listen to it, you just know that you listened to one of the best albums ever in the scene.
Dark Pool album in this format wd be insane bro
I would work my ass of to invest in something like that. Dark Pool is such a great album.
Wow, my jaw dropped when they said that Viper Room and Obsession aren't gonna be in the next album, so sick though 🤟
I had a feeling they were testing 2 different directions. They will clearly go the heavier toned Obsession direction as it was much more popular
@@alexkenley1 dearly hope they go the obsession direction sheesh
@@alexkenley1 God i hope that's true, Obsession is such a banger. Much better than Viper Room imo
Shit songs
I am actually shocked about this. Obsession is a banger, I hope they go heavier .
Daaaamn! The Dark Pool is one the best metalcore albums ever created!!
Agreed The Dark pool is a classic of 2019 I listen to that album from front to back.
One of the reason I like Heroine is because of how good the lyrics are. It was interesting to know the writing process behind it!
The vinyl for Heroine comes with a lyric booklet that has the script format that Jacob was talking about. I totally agree with you on the lyrics just totally elevating the project to another level, but dude you really gotta see the booklet as it gives the lyrics so much context! So cool to be able to follow the stories of his characters that he's talking about while also having room to figure out the lyrics' meanings for yourself.
I'LL BE THERE NO MATTER WHAT
Same here I will keep Supporting Thornhill No matter what.
MY FUCKING FAVORITE BAND
You haven't heard VRSTY then
Honestly same
@@ModernMessiah cringe
@@robjobse5162 thornhill singer has a terrible voice. You're cringe 😬
Me too top 3 favorite artist who have inspired me in music.
i'm here just to appreciate Ben's smile, the big boy is so sweet like damn
Ben didn't get a chance to speak in the interview I wish he would have spoke during the Interview portion.
13:33 that break in Raw does unexplainable things to me.
Hot damn, Jacob's vocals is on fire
Agreed Jacob is one of my top 10 favorite male Vocalist of all time in my opinion.
Thornhill killed it as always
Please get Diamond Construct on here!!
It's already on Spotify, and they killed it with Coven and Raw... Now it's time for Obsession
listening to where do we go when we die now. i need to cry :’)
It's refreshing to hear several tracks off Heroine without the vocal effects being applied. I had a hard time enjoying that album because the vocals were heavily modified. He's got a great voice and I really hope they stick with a more natural sound going forward.
Yea I agree. Vox was also quite low in the mix too.
i'm pretty sure the producer (george lever) said the singing is through a guitar amp and that's the main effect on it which is pretty sick i think
@@aaron.durci.4444 If true, that's actually pretty interesting and I can respect their creativity. I wouldn't mind the effect/approach for a song or two, but listening to the entirety of Heroine (album) is honestly a chore.
@@BC01300 always fun to see how opinions differ on that sort of stuff, I really love the vocal production on that album. It's reminiscent of that shoegazy style they leaned into and is very well executed for what it is. Also love the darkpool though and can understand how ppl prefer that production style
@@ferrisconfinesIt is the same stuff over and over. If I want to listen to Shoegaze / Deftones-Core, Thornhill would be the last band on the list. Now, if they can mix Heroine & TDP... That would be amazing.
saw these boys live a few months back
100/10, fantastic show
would recommend everyone and anyone
i love thornhill i saw them live in february seeing them in july now too
Me too, but i wish they start headlining, I don't even know the headlining bands they tour with LMAO
Literally same
@@aldoamine never heard of Silent Planet or Northlane?
@@Hollowism i would kill to hear Jacob on a Northlane song live
@@MrNerdypantz Northlane - Afterimage LIVE FT Jacob Charlton would go insane and I’m hoping it happens on their tour in a couple months
damn, considering they played Casanova for Triple J, I was hoping they played either The Hellfire Club, Blue Velvet or Hollywood 😭
the hellfire club would’ve been insane. goes crazy live
@@michael-oj3sd real
I was wanting them to play Blue Velvet, love that song
Hollywood is one of their best songs period
@@daredevil2724 to be honest I wasn't a fan of Hollywood after 3 listens I couldn't get into it sorry it wasn't my thing but I will give them credit the music video was cool but I was confused on the music video.
Man that interviewer knows what’s up no cap on god fr fr omm 🔥🔥🔥💯💯💯
true
Have seen them live twice, and they kill it every time. Id love if the vocalist explained how / what it feels like when he screams
Yeah Jacob's has some sick screams.
Thornhill will forever be my favourite band. The Dark Pool will forever be my favourite album. Love from Indonesia!!
id give anything to see them live in jakarta
Hell yeaaaaaa. Hoping they will come to Indonesia in the future
Man I haven’t heard someone do inhales in a very long time. So cleaver for protecting his signing voice for the long term.
Jacob is a very talented vocalist I got to meet him twice and he's such a down to earth guy I got to ask Jacob some questions and I was nervous and I get shy meeting artist.
How can you tell?
@@LabGoatslisten to the scream at 6:57. You can hear the sucking sound. There’s a different in sound when someone pushes out a scream compared to sucking in a scream.
@@P1XELGR1P I've always heard people talk about inhales but never understood how to do it. I can do false chord screams/growls pretty easily. Every once in a while i can get a decent fry scream going. But closest i can get to an inhale is a pterodactyl screech
@@LabGoats that’s the best way to get started! Once you get that you can drop it down to below your vocal cords. Put your finger to where the little divot is where your throat meets your collar bone. That’s the sweet spot for lows and also inhales. Keep trying to get the sound to come from there and you’ll be able to switch from fry’s to lows.
Thornhill has become one of my most seen bands live almost by accident, as they literally never seem to stop touring. I’m always pleased when they are on the bill. They put on a great show!
Thornhill is everything 🤍
Coven sounds so good
something tells me playing with silent planet for 3 months has helped on the fry scream department. sounding absolutely insane, so meshuggah
COVEN is a so much insane song, dark groove and lyrics, thanks for the inspiration.
Thanks for having them!
Broooooo, these guys are soo damn good! They deserve WAY more attention than they're getting rn❤🔥
So nice to see those guys on the show. Can't wait for any new releases
This was a treat to the eyes and ears! Thank you!
Amazing band with amazing vibe. Saw them couple weeks ago and I was thrilled how good they are live. Cheers for inviting them to the show!
Ugh awesome performance and production by everyone!
Ethan’s vocals tho ❤️❤️❤️ growth!
Yes Ethan has a great singing voice along with Nick too the harmonies in RAW during the part in a hole they harmiozie so well.
Pure joy to witness this performance. Craftsmen doing their thing. Amazing video and audio production quality.
Yet another performance totally nailed. This is sounding incredible!
Dude, literally some of my favorite songs by you guys. Absolutely stellar.
Wow wasn’t expecting them to open with an old banger song and for the vocals to have improved this much live!!🔥🔥
Let's effin goooo!!!
One of the best on this channel! Thanx, you are great!
This is one amazing , talented band . This old lady is impressed!
Actually very well thought out interview questions going beyond surface level well done!
The Sound Engineers and mixing team here deserve an award. That was so thick, but the vocals are just perfectly blended in!
I met this band last year, and I regret it so much that it wasn't a long time ago. But still, they stole my heart. I'd love to see them live but I'm poor, so I support them from I every way it's possible for me.
Cant wait to finally see Thornhill live in June! Love me some Thornhill, been playing em not stop past few months!
OMGOMGOMG wasnt expecting that! Looking forward!
the fact you guys played an og is song is such a chefs kiss to me
Hellyea! Been hoping for this
Love these guys so much.
obsession is amazing.
Yes pretty crazy this wil not be on their next album
Agreed.
Was hoping that they played arkangel but still enjoy their performance..🙌🏻🙌🏻
Me too Arkangel is my favorite song from Thornhill.
I love so much Thornhill, its my current favorite band
Casanova guitar solo never gets old
finally! been waiting for this!
Best live band I've seen this year hoping they do a headline uk tour next year
I found these guys through TDP like most other people, but seemingly unlike a lot, I fucking loved Heroine. It needed to grow on me but eventually it's become my favorite album of theirs. I loved Obsession and I loved Viper Room too, but I think Obsession is what blends their 'old' and 'new' sounds best. I really hope they continue with what they found on Obsession, but don't forget their roots - the heaviness of TDP, the dark beauty of Heroine. Such a great band.
Sounded like you forced yourself to like Heroine and reluctantly pushing TDP aside😂
Agreed Obession is the better song I wasn't a fan of Viper room.
That snare ❤
This is everything
Killed it love Thornhill 🔥👏🏼
So, so great! I love them!
i love love love these so much, theyre incredible live and dont dissappoint
whered u see them
My GOSH.... i didnt know them, first song broke my neck
about to be fire
I love these guys !!
I saw these guys last year here in Des Moines with The Plot in You, Banks Arcade, Holding Absence. Solid show!!
Faaarrrrkkkkkk! this just hits differently live
The Dark Pool has been on heavy rotation in my house for a while now. I never tire of it and i think that says a lot. Such s great album
I knew Viper Room and Obsession were testing the waters. Good stuff lads
So good 👏 and the sound quality is great!
Whee, this is going to be so good 😁
coven is that song that gets better in every listen
what about Invent Animate that would be so cool🔥🔥🔥
I heavily fw this
IA udio Tree would lay me to rest honestly
god i love this band
I love the drummer, good taste
Ben is the best drummer in the game.
Love this band!🤘🔥
SOO SICK! 🔥
You guys just gained a new fan🔥🔥
The boys crushed it.
These guys are so good.
LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOO
Innovative band that i love !
That guitar design is sick!
Damn, they killed this!
HELL YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!
Insane❤
These guys are one of the best new bands in the past few years. Cant wait for their next album and hopefully their first US headliner.
pretty sure theyve already done some small headliner tours
@@alexkenley1actually I think you are right. I do think they did a few showa headlining but not sure if it was a whole tour?
pure talents-
Anyone else think this is by the thr best they’ve played raw? That added banjo and harmonies are just ridiculous. Incredible performance boys. Hurry up and announce another aus tour
I love this
"Where we go..." is such a metalcore flagship song. 🖤
THAT SNARE IS EVERYTHING
Daaaaaaamn, fresh
Thank you Audiotree :)
merci !!!!!!!
