We took the free BMW 335i coupe to Fluid Motor Union and had what is similar to a pre-purchase inspection at a dealer done. There were a handful of issues found, mainly a bunch of oil leaks!

I really appreciate someone who is such a specialist like this guy.
jim law Tyler Hooptie also has a good bmw specialist
Jim Law I entirely agree - His explanations were very interesting and not boring - If I was undergoing an apprenticeship I would give "my right arm" to be trained by him!
@@claywalker9064 Oh he'd train you alright!!!!.
Took me 20 min to take air box off my damn focus. So I appreciete what they do.
I so agree with you sir....that cat is well spoken...OJ rules
God bless Scott glad he’s doing better
But he will never have so much luxury and fun as with one of these cars. You get what you pay for.
@@sorsorsor11 you've must have never driven one; BMWs, despite their woes are fun to drive.
@@dinosoarskill17 That's what I meant, that BMWs are fun. I worked for a car rental company so...tried like 300 cars during the years. As reliable as Toyotas are, they are lightyears away from a BMW
Seemed like a real nice dude.
@@xviper84 Wait what?! Scott who? Scotty Kilmer right? We might just have talked about 2 different person?!
Who thinks Sam should pay it forward and give the car away to a subscriber?
Rich Rebuilds yeah like me?
Nah, if he likes it he should keep it
I’m a subscriber. Sure.
No Rich that would be mean.
Give someone else a problem to someone else.
Here you can have my aids, I don't want it anymore.
Ok thanks.
Giving a 335i to someone isn't really doing them a favor tho Teslaboi 😎
Wow that guy seems extremely knowledgeable about BMW’s
Well yes, since he was, at one time, the youngest BMW master tech in the US I would expect him to know one or two things about them.
As a master tech I would hope so.
Jared Lentz No shit lol
Sorry, but that all were things, my
apprentice would ve known in his 3rd year.. even i knew all of them and im out of bmw since 8 years :D.
I ve heard nothing really special things about this car / engine (like the turbo rattle test, there is a function in ISTA to check the wastegates)
so i dont know what a "mastertech" should be, but in germany this guy would just be a bit better normal mechanic caused by experience and his higher age.
But i really don't know something about the education for car mechanic in USA.
@@leviathan1195 I'm not going to say he is amazing based solely on this video, but his reputation precedes him. In this video, he explains everything he needed to clearly, and concisely. You can tell there is a lot more going on in his head, he seems very articulate and he speaks in that humble/casual way very intelligent people do when they are trying to explain something complex to someone who doesn't know the ins and outs. You sound very ignorant when you say he "would just be a bit better normal mechanic". The cars are just as complicated here as they are in Germany, believe it or not. He is a master tech here, he would likely be regarded the same there. This video isn't a highlight reel for O.J., it's probably the simplest thing he had done that day.
“Nothing is more expensive than a cheap BMW”
General Shark nothing truer than you fine words!
A cheap Benz lol, I spent 1000 bucks on 2 batteries
Is that like a free dog?
I had an 94’ Audi 90. It was my first German car. I couldn’t believe all the electric gremlins. I told myself it would be my last German car until I could afford it. lol

$2000 for 2 struts that would take 4 hours in the driveway and maybe $300 in parts from fcpeuro
And of course with only harbor freight tools for true Samcrac form
Did my rear shocks in less than 2 hours. Some people just don’t know how to use a wrench unfortunately. :/
@@DavidMendez-pf6ie its not necissarily the work itself, its also the consequences of doing it wrong. i have helped my dad to some major work to his car, but if my brakes ever develop a minor issue im taking them to someone who really knows what they are doing.
Did you not see where he picked the car up from or the previous owner? the guy was older and didn’t look like much of a wrench to begin with but I’d love to see y’all try to do that in 4 hours in 2 feet of snow “in the driveway”. God forbid someone pay the dealer with money that isn’t yours anyways😂
@@DavidMendez-pf6ie How much do replacement s shocks for a 335I cost before labor. Is your car a BMW?
Hey Sam!! Awesome car - I hope you tune and go stage 1 or 2; I’ve spent the last 6 months with my own E92 / N54 build and it’s a GREAT platform for tuning and going 400-500hp very easily. There are a couple of issues with this N54 platform you should know and take care of ASAP before you tune:
- Leaking Oil Housing gasket - this one is especially important because if it leaks on the belt, it can slide off and slide through the crank seal.
- Leaking Oil Pan
- Leaking Valve cover
- Bad injectors - go index 12
- Leaking Turbos
- Water pump
- Fuel pump
- Cracked vacuum lines - go silicon 3.5”
- Walnut blast - at that mileage, it’s going to need it
Some items for tuning if you plan to (it’s relatively inexpensive.. $1500-2000):
- JB4 with MHD
- XHP transmission tune
- Larger Intercooler - VRSF
- Cat-less down pipes - VRSF
- Dual cone intakes - BMS
- Charge Pipe - VRSF
- Blowoff valve - Raceport
All of these should easily give you 400-500hp without new turbos or a single turbo.
This engine can easily handle 500-600hp. :)
Doing my own 535i N54 project right now, and this is all accurate.
Mr. LZ is running 750-800 hp on stock internals
@@cds401 ikr
Eddy Dreni awesome starting my n54 project soon, what would be more ideal for reliability wise. Meaning what project would cost less money & would I be able to push around the same hp as the n54. ? What’s less work iguess my question is?
Yeah nice 500hp with plastic valve cover 🤣. This car has planned obsolescence all over it. Joking aside, I can't understand why companies put rubber pipes instead of silicone in the first place.
If your BMW isn't leaking oil, then it's out of oil.
Love to see how these guys are fixing this car. I used to be a mechanic fixing all kind of cars in a garage. I liked it very much but then came the time we were not repair cars anymore, we just pull out the broken parts en change them for new ones. So not a mechanic anymore, just a changer. Respect for these guys who really know what they're doing!
I know a guy like OJ. Since I first met him, when he was assigned to look after my 900 Aero/SPG Saab many years ago, he's gone from senior mechanic to workshop manager to owner of the business that specialises in European cars. He knows Saabs.
Unfortunately, after we retired and did a sea change, he's 1,100 km / 700 miles away. My current Saab 9-3 Aero is due for a major service later this year and I'll get him to do it.
People like this need to be cherished and supported.
Samcrac: "And any time I think of a BMW with near 200,000 miles on it the first thing that pops into my head is a ticking time bomb"
Scotty Kilmer: "Or an endless money pit."
Yep why I love my old duramax truck. I can maintain it my self and it doesn't cost a fortune in repair.
Interesting hey. Is it because luxury cars are money pits then...
A rats nest of German insanity (Scotty Kilmer 2020).
My 2010 328i convertible is at 267k miles and still runs strong? Only had to replace consumables like breaks, rotors, fluids, etc.
Ahh the famous BMW oil leak catch pan

Thank you for this video. The technician's knowledge and explanations were really helpful. I'm looking to buy a used 435i and now I have some idea on what areas to really inspect before I buy. Great job!

Let’s talk about that Cobra with the vintage race paint. Looks legit.
Probably a kit but maybe not.
8:21 so cloooooooose
HOLY SH1T
Scott reminds me of my dad's friend Aaron who has been around BMWs since the 80s. Coolest dude I've met who fixed my E46 325i when I had really bad vaccum leaks. Very common problem with coolant leaks on any BMW six cylinder engine. And he drives a BMW E46 330i M sport with over 200k miles. Same year as mine as well. Those six cylinder engines from BMW are the kings of the six cylinder engines.
Love this car, do good on this one Sam!
Change that brittle plastic charge pipe those tend to break when you increase the boost
I'm wondering whether the collapsed vacuum tube linings would cause that "cow" sound when Alex introduced his shop air??
Mark Chippendale I’m thinking he had his hand on the other side of that tube and it was bypassing also the pressure converters have a built in air hole that could cause that noise overall that test wasn’t a valid test to check those lines. He should have had a vacuum pressure gauge.
Fix it Sam! I also have a similar model, a 325i from 2011 and I love my car, a lot of fun to drive, greetings from Germany
Now Sam can gift it forward to a deserving person. I’m sure he knows someone he could help.

What’s in that Escalade 👀👀
Would be lovely to see a single turbo convertion😁

Great Vid glad Scott is doing better
what a well educated BMW tech, Thanks Sam!
If you tell people in Germany, your Bmw has 200000, they ask , if it has the second or third engine and gearbox. That is the big advantage, if you cannot go faster than 80 miles....
Lol 😂
More HP means extra stress and being an old BMW, it will break.
Sometimes it's better to just leave it as it is.
Good video. Can't stop looking at that Escalade in the back
Nice to watch a guy who is a true guru assess a car. Awesome!
I hope you at least took him and bought him LUNCH
Sam the Man ✊🏼
Impressive experience. Great communicator.
Wow OJ. IM DIGGING THE DUE. I wish I had a guy like you in my neck of the woods
Sam I have had 2 335i. You should totally mod it. Keep it super super simple and just throw on new upgrades turbos and bolt on parts and your good to go.
This is why you get a Honda, they last a lifetime and you don’t even have to visit the dealer
John Mora if you like changing timing belts. I know people like them but I would never own another one. It was cheaper to trade it in than it was to get the timing belt replaced
@John Mora That's a myth. Check out what's involved in changing a water pump on a post 2003 Honda Civic. The amount of labor involved will shock you.
Love that groovy Ramcharger in OJ’s shop....nice orange 1st gen Bronco outside too!
Wow Sam that was best most amazing gift from the universe to you, you have to hook it up.. modify it into your dream BMW
Dam watching him talk you can truly see he is a master of his craft!
As a Vegas local, I'm loving the Golden Knights shirt!
I love my n54. Yes more problems will come, but I do the majority of my work at home and Indy shop. Its been expensive but it's worth it in the end.
I have an E90 N54, I've done almost everything considered "FBO" full bolt on. Cat less downpipes, M3 control arms, ST coilovers, RB Turbo TD04s, 7" intercooler, PSP hotside charge pipe, HKS BOV with aluminum cold side charge pipe, RB Turbo inlets, Dual Catch Can set up with Radium engineering and Mishimoto, JB4 MAP5, MHD BEF E85, so on and so forth. "We usually like to hang the engine and disconnect the front subframe to do the oil pan gasket".
wow, just wow.
Should that not be done?
@@donnchakearney2995 Just thinking, that's a lot of work, just to change the pan gasket. Seems to be typical of the amount of time and procedure each repair takes on these machines, that's all.
It’s not a lot of work just a few hours do the water pump and turbos too while it’s off Then just injectors plugs cam ledges front and rear crank seals dmfw 👍🏻
crapmuhap “a few hours” is my definition of a lot of work for a pan gasket. Seems to be one thing after another that’s unnecessarily complicated on BMW. I’ve had 15 year old domestic vehicles over the last twenty years not even need a pan gasket. And my cheap Chrysler 2.2 that had over 100,000 miles, never required turbo work. And if it had, the turbo was right out in the open, as were the regular maintenance items. That is the engineering, I look for.
