The reality of swordfighting in actual history is that very few became very skilled, because skill advancement largely comes through practice and learning from failure - and failing in actual sword fights is pretty punishing. 😅 Point is, Arena Commander will be CRUCIAL for 'getting gud' in the PU without nosediving toward permadeth.

1:32:19 personally I came to SC because of starfield. It gave me a taste of “cool space game with some realism” and really prepared my brain for what star citizen is and why it’ll be fantastic when it can implement things like good outposts and quests. I must admit though I seem to spend 1-2 hours just trying to get in my ship and go somewhere in SC which made me appreciate how easy Starfield is to put down and pick back up for a parent or generally people with tight schedules

That's really the heart of that discussion, too. One game is a time taker, the other is a fun quick game to jump in and out of.

Regarding single player vs multiplayer: Multiplayer hasn't really interested me since like Halo 3, and I was never interested in MMOs or sim games really. But SC is exceptional in more ways than one. For a lot of people, I think the appeal of SC and SQ42 will override their usual sensibilities.
We already see that with some of the newer people who would clearly prefer a more arcadey experience but have dived headlong into this LIFE SIM.

I have always had faith in SC, but be wary of predictions. I have avoided being disappointed by ignoring predictions or adding at least a year to every prediction. I hope you are right, and I do believe we will get a lot in 2024, but to be excited for everything is setting yourself up for disappointment. Brigadier_Beaux

To a degree... on the large scale, especially given some of this games mechanics, logistics wins wars. TOW can def help balance some of the tactical aspects, but sustainability is a balance all of its own that really only shines in the PU. It would be tough for TOW to test those things as well. I would suspect some of the military platforms to perform better in TOW than the PU, but in the PU stuff that's easier to repair and rearm would be more attractive.

After the initial trips to Pyro, the pew-pewing will end and a normalcy will occur. The gangs will need travelers to buy, to sell, you will solo/multi-crew like anywhere(groups may need to watch their backs more, because they will make crime elements nervous)

the way i understand "distribution centers" are like mini-space stations on a planet. They might have done better calling them "towns" as opposed to the cities like Hurston, Microtech and Orison. underground facilities are probably going to be extensions of the bunkers and trade terminals we already have as they can keep adding more sub-basements and build them out like an anthill.
really what i want to see is roads connecting the major landing hubs to distribution hubs/ secondary landing zones and missions are escort or deliver or even ground cargo missions. Try going to any landing site near Hurston and it's an exercise in frustration. With Rastar it's a huge miss opportunity.

Woof, as a game dev the statement "it's not that hard" to ship arena commander or theaters of war to consoles is wackadoo. Unless you've been working for the entire project with that goal in mind, actually implementing as you go, porting a game to console is a nightmare. It's not just the QA and release stuff the astropub mentions as a caveat, it's integrating with Sony/microsoft login, social features, progression, it's building custom UI and control schemes for controllers, it's adding things like aim assist systems to fps gameplay, not to mention adressing the performance concerns of this incredibly unoptimized game to run on standard hardware. On top of that, you need a company with console experience. PC devs who don't actively ship to console would be way slow at all of those things I mention cause they have to learn how to do them first.
Ty for the podcast, enjoyable to listen to and I am stoked for these new features. But clear from your mind the idea of any star citizen thing making it to console in the next decade!

I agree with @TheAstroPub on the naming of 'Distribution Centres' being a bit lame.

Oke, I have a point specifically for the last question: Will SC become more Mainstream in 2024.
YES, I think there is a really good chance but not in people actually playing it but simply in the awareness for Squadron 42 BECAUSE I think next year the chances are pretty good that we will get a release-date or at least a release windows of Squadron and I think that is the point when CIG will start the actual marketing campaign for SQ42 that reaches outside of the SC community. That means they will be specifically pushing for Squadron 42 to become mainstream so we will see it become more mainstream.
For example: I am honestly pretty sure we will get a Squadron 42 Trailer at the GameAwards next year. I think if they can't give a date yet they will tell us at next years CC that Squadron 42 will release 2025 because that gives them quite a good span of time to still choose the exact date when they know more (except of course if they are not sure it will actually even hit 2025) and the moment they can give a release-date I think they can finally start the mainstream marketing because people NEED an actual date for anything SC-related otherwise the articles will come in again. GameAwards are at the very end of the year so by then I think there is a good chance we will have a release-window at least.
Also, the GameAwards are pretty open about anything in the industry and are some of the only organizations who were pretty fast in sharing the "I Held the Line"-Presentation so I don't think CIG will have a problem showing of SQ42 there

27:35 Correction, Phantom Liberty was NOT a DLC. It was an Expansion. DLC is what the game got for patch 1.65(free DLC I might add) Also look up Project "Orion" for CP2077. It's basically Cyberpunk 2077 2.0. CDPR is not done with CP2077.

Release date estimates by most developers is always too optimistic. One thing I learned working for a large software corporation, whatever a dev estimates in time, multiply it by 2 to 4 times to get the real timespan. So if they say 1 year i would expect 2 years minimum. I think cig has a history of not doing that. This is across all engineering fields tho look at elon musk.

Once SQ42 is done, then all the engine, AI tools and environments, and the entire base game are done. to make SQ42 The Terran Wars, or SQ42 The Lost Tevarin Wars will be a lot quicker, just the story, the motion cap and voice acting to do. So they can roll out as many single-player games as they wish, even a historical one with old ships re-enacting historical battles. they have a shit ton of lore to pull from.

I think the Theaters-Of-War/FPS modules could be bundled with the pure dog-fighting and racing modules of Arena Commander and sold as a stand-alone game. And since most of the development of a such game has already been funded via SQ42 & Star Citizen, the retail price would not need to recoup the development costs. This could mean either a lower retail price, just to cover the operating costs + a modest profit, or a standard AAA retail price for a larger profit.

They don't need more money, just sell the entry level game and offer ship options for sale and that should cover everything.

Selling arena commander is a terrible idea, in my opinion. I agree with Tomato that releasing it for free for people to try and be a gateway to squadron/star citizen is a good way to go. It gets people into the game and creates a little good will towards CIG, and we all know they need that.

  • @dcshoes841

@@TheAstroPubLive Correct. They won the case by showing that Star Citizen and Squadron 42 were the same "game." But if they split out Arena Commander and sell it as a stand-alone game, Crytek may be able to file another lawsuit.

    • @ctzn3lack
      @ctzn3lack 7 месяцев назад +2

Sure they can try to sue again but it stopped being cryengine a long time ago. Plus CIG transitioned to modifying the Lumberyard instead, and now they are clearly labeling it as its own engine, which I doubt they would do without having the legal footing to crush any potential lawsuits.
