That's because the ones in HL2 were Soldiers and Overwatch Elite units which are like Cyborgs, humans that got their personality removed. These units however are Grunts and unlike the Soldiers in HL2, Grunts seem to be more combat trained CP (Civil Protection). Which would make sense since CPs are fully human thus containing their personalities.
@@ath3392 True but also lore-wise Combine Soldiers are augmented/cyborg while the Overwatch Units (the white ones) are more machine than human striping them of any humanity. Their dialogues feels like they're next stage of Metrocop. When they can do overwatch tasks, but only in quarantine zone. None of their memories gets erased and they keep their old personalities.
Damn they act so human, new theory what if at the time before Gordon came OTA soldiers also werent transhuman yet and were just like civil protection, only a higher rank. But then they got idea of modyifing them.
Based on the version of the Combine Grunt model with the mask blown off, showing a very modified face, and the dialogue lines alluding to things like on-the-fly specific brainwashing, they definitely aren't unmodified, but based on these voice lines they're also definitely nowhere near as far along in the dehumanization and total brainwashing as the Combine troops would be by the time of Half-Life 2.
I found one that you missed! (I think it's a grunt that says it). During the strider battle, when you begin fighting the combine foot soldiers, the voice line "Deliver damage assessment to Overwatch. Repeat. Deliver damage assessment to Overwatch." plays.
I'm toying with the idea, it's finding the right clips for it. Unlike HL2s voice files which are mostly individual words, the voice files for HLA are mostly full sentences. EDIT: That's not true actually, a lot of HL2's voice lines are full sentences. But it's easier to tell what they are saying via their script files and audio, and are easier to splice.
Isn’t there another scene right before the garage fight? A lone grunt is looking over the edge, and command is constantly asking for a damage assessment, but the guy starts shooting you and never answers?
Felix C. There’s a scene file in the level, and a couple lines of dialog that aren’t used in this video, but I don’t know the exact lines (since I can’t open the scene file). And I love how they used 2 different versions of the dialogues, this is something we never saw or at least I never saw in any other game. This is really a huge improvement.
@@countersphere2924 Perhaps ... Or the devs just didn't bother or found a chance to make them chat. They do talk but it is hard to understand them
@@ath3392 True but also lore-wise Combine Soldiers are augmented/cyborg while the Overwatch Units (the white ones) are more machine than human striping them of any humanity.
Soldiers have no emotion but the Overwatch are almost just straight up robots.
CPs however are fully human though as you said we never heard them have actual conversations except from "pick up that can" and the one who talked to Barney when he was undercover.
Weither it was because limitations or something idk but I'm glad they made CPs more expressive too in HL:Alyx.
The Grunts in HL:Alyx seem to be fully human too thus making them have more chatter and overall human too.
I almost felt bad for killing them lol.
@@ath3392 But even the more robotic units in Hal Life Alyx seem a bit more human too so I'm glad for that.
Well if you noticed in Half-Life 2 that some of the Combine Soldiers at Nova Prospekt stutter and sound confused when talking about Freeman controlling the Antlions with the Bugbait which means they retain some humanity when it comes to certain emotions along with still feeling pain and fear.
"Overwatch says stop kicking it"
Why did I laugh so hard when he stopped
It's really immersive seeing them having conversations and you're hiding... It's IMMERSIVE
I love them, they sound so innocent.
I highly appreciate the Closed Captions!
"His Kicking It.., Overwatch Says Stop Kicking It.., He Stopped Kicking It." For some reason, I find it abit cute and goofy
First Grunt: Repair or extraction needed
2nd: I don't know
1st: "I don't know"
1st: He's kicking it
Overwatch *tells the 1st one to tell the other to stop kicking the strider*
1st: Overwatch says stop kicking it
2nd: *stops kicking it*
1st: He stopped kicking it
It sounds like two kids on a phone with their mom
“Overwatch says ‘stop kicking it’.”
*_”I WILL NEVER STOP KICKIN’ IT.”_*
[Can I Kick It by A Tribe Called Quest plays loudly]
"Overwatch says stop kicking it"
*sad noises*
They made them have so much more of a personality in this game and I love it
Love how valve just casually drops one of the most amazing VR games ever made and then just dips yet again. Would be amazing if we got another half life VR game with these amazing graphics and just pure love put into it, maybe just a bit longer.
1:24 probably my favourite line in any game ever 😂
they gave the grunts battle droid style comedic lines, love it
Their dialogues feels like they're next stage of Metrocop. When they can do overwatch tasks, but only in quarantine zone. None of their memories gets erased and they keep their old personalities.
Mom says you aren’t allowed to kick that
He stopped kicking it. That part was truly wholesome LOL
i rlly wish they added more of these, i loved them
Damn they act so human, new theory what if at the time before Gordon came OTA soldiers also werent transhuman yet and were just like civil protection, only a higher rank.

"He's kicking it. Overwatch said kicking it! He stopped kicking it" funniest conversation
I found one that you missed! (I think it's a grunt that says it). During the strider battle, when you begin fighting the combine foot soldiers, the voice line "Deliver damage assessment to Overwatch. Repeat. Deliver damage assessment to Overwatch." plays.
The Combine Grunts in this game actually remind me a lot of how the military was in Half-Life 1
You should do some radio scenarios like you did with the HL2 Combine voice lines.
@@RescoeZ Dew it!
You really should!
Isn’t there another scene right before the garage fight? A lone grunt is looking over the edge, and command is constantly asking for a damage assessment, but the guy starts shooting you and never answers?
Any recordings of this?
Felix C. There’s a scene file in the level, and a couple lines of dialog that aren’t used in this video, but I don’t know the exact lines (since I can’t open the scene file). I think I’ve seen it pop up on closed captions for some lets players, but it tends to get interrupted cause they’re spotted early
Yes. That's the second one in this video.
g3o.graphy_2526_ this is after all that. After the strider activates before fighting the combine squad in the garage. Right before an ordinal jumps on a car hood
“Overwatch says stop kicking it”
“Mom said it’s my turn of the Xbox”
Same energy
0:01 is this a breaking bad reference? “It’s a barrel, you can roll it” I think the line went like that
i really want it to be a breaking bad reference, but.. they didn't say that? not that i heard? idk
I think it is, as they could’ve easily rolled it lol
That last Grunt probably reminded the teacher about homework when they were in school
"Overwatch says stop kicking it!"
"He stopped kicking it.."
i love how after the "he stopped kicking it" he looks down like "awww man"
0:28 is it only me or anyone heard half life 2 beta metrocop end sound something like that
It is
“Overwatch says stop kicking it”
“He stopped kicking it.”
@@RescoeZ*grunt walks off rubble*
Combine soldier: Repair or extraction needed.
Overwatch: Report condition
Combine soldier: idk
Overwatch: report Registered number
Combine soldier: idk
Overwatch: report operations
Combine soldier: hes kicking it
Overwatch: Cease activity immediately
Combine soldier: overwatch says stop kicking it
Combine soldier 2: *stops*
Combine soldier: he stopped kicking it.
"He's kicking it."
"Inquire him to cease protocol."
When the soldier was told to stop kicking it he looked sad
I like that grunts have there personalities still
Overwatch says stop kicking it.
That is my new favourite line next to the right man in the wrong place.
Man I gotta replay this once I have a better PC. What an incredible game to start VR with, enjoyed every second of it.
I wonder what Overwatch’s response to “He’s kicking it” was.

Imagine playing as a combine on a Half Life Game
Edit:I forgot to say like a oposing force sequel but without Sheppard and the realization of a combine soldier
Yeah like one of these grunts before they got turned into what they were in HL2. Like you could play most of the game fighting for the Combine, and wind up trying to escape when you realize what they plan to do with you.
@@WhenToastersAttack entropy zero 2 came out recently, has exactly what you need.
@@jeremychicken3339 thanks for the info! Need to check it out
I'm not sure what would be funnier-- Overwatch literally just saying "Relay message: Stop kicking it" or Overwatch saying something really verbose that just boiled down to "stop kicking it"
I can just imagine what that first grunt heard.
"He's kicking it."

they really made them feel a bit more human with these lines, especially them conversing
Overwatch said it is my turn to play
But I only just got on it.
The grunt has to be my favorite combine soldier.
I like how they treat overwatch as their mom
Now i'm just imagining overwatch scolding her naughty children
@complexit lol
Tbh, this makes it more sad. These grunts are just Civil Protection Officers with proper military training. Removing them of their humanity and replacing their organs with mechanic bits shows how brutal the Combine is
