At some point in the game you can see dead combines around without their helmets. And somewhere there are two captains. While grunts seems to have bionic eyes, metal circuits and some sort of mask on their face, captains head is just some sort of a brain that is as large as a normal head. So that may explain why they can only talk with an artificial voice ?

You can apply this to human combine lamenting killing civilian humans, perhaps. Sounds like they're trying to suppress that through wipes. The leader also takes a pause to say no to something, stating that memory is included in the refresh.
Late in this compilation, the units mention downloading new bio-data on their immediate target. Even in HL2 they mention downloading info on the target at hand. Presumably, they download an understanding for each enemy type they face, wipe and switch for each mission. They're intended as disposable mooks in a videogame, though, so this doesn't actually affect anything.

I had an idea that in Half life 3 there could be a chapter where Gordon saves a Combine solider who intends for there teamwork to be temporary, only to realise he's considered a rebel for spending so long with Freeman.
What the actual chatter sounds like for a squad of Overwatch in Half-Life: Alyx. Subtitles are available if you turn them on, could not make out everything though.
2:15 is this the start of the transition for combine troops from actual humans to what is essentially flesh-robots that we encounter in HL2? 4:05 appears to be one of them accepting this?
ECHO-4 sounds like a Grunt which are entry level Overwatch troopers according to the Overwiki. They probably sound and act more human because they haven't received the full conversion yet. Combine Ordinals however which look a lot more like the HL2 soldiers are a lot less human sounding and even monotone by how they speak at 2:12. Even in HL2 the Combine still have some semblance of their humanity albeit a lot more suppressed.
Mind you, this is way earlier than the events in HL2, during which the Combine arny members have been completely brainwashed except for Metrocops, which are just citizens working for the Combine. HLA has multiple examples of the combine acting human instead of being robotic like they were in Half Life 2, so it is possible that the Combine later reworked their army to actually make wiping memories mandatory, instead of using memory wipe as punishment
Interesting to see how different the combine sound in Alyx compared to 2/Episodes. There's far fewer euphemisms in their speech- like, rebels were Anticitizens in HL2. Zombies were Necrotics. Antlions were Biotics. You didn't go weapons free, you went sharp. There wasn't really any reference to killing or hostilities in their speech (or, it was rarer)- all replaced with repurposed medical jargon and euphemistic usage of judicial terms. I guess we can view that as a product of Alyx taking place earlier in the Half Life timeline than 2/Episodes, but I do kind of hope they bring back the cold, distanced comms chatter they had in 2 for 3.

Sounds like there's a little bit of a narrative here. Did you arrange the voicefiles in a way to make a little story, or is this directly from an encounter in the game?
Kabirdix I usually do that yeah, unlike the previous videos with the new lines. The way the voice lines are set up in half life games allows you to do that, since they are meant to react to different situations on the spot.
BUT, unless people knows what half life is, they would be piss scared and probably write articles about how the government became more oppressive or dictatorial (or some controversial sh|t to get more views and money)
I like to imagine that the radio chatter is only scrambled coming out of their masks and combine troops have de-scramblers to clear up the audio. It makes sense that it's just audible enough for civvies to take orders but vague enough that they can't react in combat. It's the same for the Death Troopers in Star Wars ruclips.net/video/lYkOYFenndU/видео.html

"Overwatch is requesting all units refresh and resolve. Cognitive dissonance will not be tolerated, negative memories included. Update is live, acceptance is MANDATORY" aka combine thug life
The reason why the captain is so hard to understand is because they get a modification to their vocal cords that makes it so even if they can’t breather and their lungs are damaged that can still talk
I really wish the Overwatch AI made it into the radio chatter as it did in HL2; I loved her voice and cold, menacing, methodical tone. The updated vocoders will have to do until the next Half-Life :(
I like how they make so the grunts, who had little to no modifications, speak in a tone that's easier to understand, and the other classes, who had modifications like the replacement of vocal cords, have their voices harder to understand
The combine solders' communications have always been so terrifyingly badass and inhuman, like spirit voices coming through artificial larynxes. No personality, no emotion. All one mind and one voice.
I love how they sound like it would be near impossible to understand what they're saying in the heat of the moment but it's also believable that they could easily understand each other being trained to listen to these kinds of voices in an earpiece using all the terminology and whatnot
So these were humans who decided to join the Combine forces with the promise of a better life (a life destroyed by the combine.) And the deeper they went the less human they became. DAYUM.
Yep Deeper they goes more deeper they'll forgot their self and they're more not humane anymore(B'coz of many physical and mentally Modification Had done to them)
Half-Life: Amalgam DLC you play as combine and get to go out on increasingly dire missions during the fall of the citadel and eventually you get to kill some of the rogue CP squads attempting to abandon the city

I love how half life has the most realistic and extensive voice lines and outstanding AI even now... for a game thats over a decade old
I LOVE the updated vocals!!
I like the chatter from Half-Life 2 it's easier to understand it this chatter they made it really garbled
Richy
I think most of it is actually clearer in HL Alyx, but the captains are practically gargling
@@laylaruan that was the “Captain”? Damn, I thought it was the Heavy Unit’s voice filter...
Haha, and presumably the others have to follow his orders
@@laylaruan they hear him clearly unlike non-combines
"He's kicking it...
Overwatch says 'stop kicking it.'
He stopped kicking it."
I really wish there were more of these. They've been helping me sleep lately.
Shout out to my boy Echo-7. He died doing what he loved.
Its so cool hearing multiple voices for even the same combine type.
Add more character to the now synth troopers.
Would be cool to dispense covoders for real life quarantine workers, imagine how badass would a routine disenfection duty be like : D
T H R E A T W A V E bruh this would be awesome
BUT, unless people knows what half life is, they would be piss scared and probably write articles about how the government became more oppressive or dictatorial (or some controversial sh|t to get more views and money)
@@James-oj6ru Well maybe people should be scared they are being really stupid about quarantine.
*intense chatter*
1:04 Applying pressure on last node, *flare down.*
Girls in quarantine: ugh, I hate being locked down.
Boys in quaranta giorni:
We need more videos like these. Combine radio chatter scenarios are very awesome.
In Half Life 2, The OTA and MP's normally spoke in a clear tone.
Mean while, in the Half Life Alyx universe.
*Intense gibberish*
Reverse that. It's way more clear in HL:A. Combine soldiers in HL2 are like *bouncerbouncerexingfalreponvisconfvbhgssq*
I do like the HL2 voices better. But that's probably because I could actually understand what they were saying lol.
Grunts and suppressors seem more human than the ordinal.
@российские военные , yep.
@российские военные , some of their quotes are emotional though
@российские военные , there are quotes that you won't find, or you've misheard them in the voice lines vids
@российские военные , also, don't you recognize his voice at 1:20
@российские военные , aernt the eyes susposed to be like cameras? The eyes removed and put wires leading to the camera thingd
The higher the rank, the less human they sound.
Imagine hacking this into the police radio frequence
It will be... The greatest plan ever
Its much easier to understand if you understand combine terms
Bouncer: Grenade
Dagger(s): Weapons
Viscerator: Manhack
Necrotics: Zombies
Parasitics: Headcrabs
HVT: High Value Target
Ripcord: Evacuate or move to cover
Flare down: Grenade out

Sounds like ECHO Lead is saying "Report contaminants, over."
Anyone else love the captain's voice? I don't know why but it sounds so cool to me.
@00:45 Love how they show more human emotions in this one, one even says "Stay dead!" upon killing something lol.
Why does their voice sound so nice? It’s kind of satisfying. :O
really cool discord call, thanks dr breen
"Overwatch is requesting all units refresh and resolve. Cognitive dissonance will not be tolerated, negative memories included. Update is live, acceptance is MANDATORY"
aka combine thug life
Echo lead/ Captain sounds like when you breath in and talk at the same time.
I love how with such good coms teamplay, they manage to lose against only you.
I really like hearing the radio off sound used by the combine soldiers from Half-Life 2
The reason why the captain is so hard to understand is because they get a modification to their vocal cords that makes it so even if they can’t breather and their lungs are damaged that can still talk
2:11 "cognitive dissonance will not be tolerated, negative memories included. update is live, acceptance is mandatory"
fuck that
The way this is ordered makes it sound like it’s an actual engagement against zombies or something
Sounds like radio vocoder version mismatches like DMR between a Motorola Mototrbo radio and a cheap Chinese Baofeng DMR radio
I really wish the Overwatch AI made it into the radio chatter as it did in HL2; I loved her voice and cold, menacing, methodical tone.
The updated vocoders will have to do until the next Half-Life :(
These are the most amazing things ever. I love imagining the scenes of small-scale team skirmish held outside of scope of Alyx's interference.
I’ve always loved how the Combine sound. They sound so cool!
Nobody:
Combine: *WERERECRECKEACERACK*
I do not know why, but Combine radio chatter is so satisfying.
The radio chatter sounds fucking dope. They did a fantastic job
i like the way APF said that
2:23
I like how they make so the grunts, who had little to no modifications, speak in a tone that's easier to understand, and the other classes, who had modifications like the replacement of vocal cords, have their voices harder to understand
"Advantage lost, problems incoming."
2020 in a nutshell
I like how they are more human here. They now can actually feel the pain, they now can be scared.
I like how they contrast between normal speech and mechanized.
Thank god modern combine chatter hasn't lost it's former glory!
Wiping short term memory to remove fear? Shit son.
I remember listening to the voice acting of the combines from the HL2 Beta, and there is a rather big resemblance here!
Just an fyi, this lines up perfectly with Anti-Citizen, shame the song is shorter tho
There are some who sound like they are drowning with their own spit
But there are some wich actually sound cool
So these were humans who decided to join the Combine forces with the promise of a better life (a life destroyed by the combine.) And the deeper they went the less human they became. DAYUM.
Yep
Deeper they goes more deeper they'll forgot their self and they're more not humane anymore(B'coz of many physical and mentally Modification Had done to them)
And I thought death troopers sounded menacing
"stay dead." Holy shit I love this line from Grunts.
Overwatch: “What??”
Grunt: overwacth request reinforcement
Mutipel narcotics inbound
The radio cutoff always sounds like a squeaky gate
Half-Life: Amalgam DLC
you play as combine and get to go out on increasingly dire missions during the fall of the citadel and eventually you get to kill some of the rogue CP squads attempting to abandon the city
This strikes an interesting difference, these combine are still very much prototype, less time for collaborators to bow to their new overlords
This is an entire story
The APF sound so fucking cool
Good content, all it takes is consistency ❤️😊
1:56 I like this one because it kinda shows the personalities of the combine. It also sounds funny for me because it seems like he is being attack by a bunch of headcrabs. Like, he fell down a broken floor, and all around him are headcrabs staring at him, then pouncing on him.
