- On this episode we pull one of the tri-fives into the shop and start assembling it to see what all we need in order to finish it. The idea behind this project is to build a clone of the famous 55 Chevrolet used in the movie "Two Lane Blacktop". I also discuss how I ended up with my 1957 Hardtop and how I met Dickie Jones.

Thanks for the rest of Dickie’s story Dave. I’m a police officer and getting drunks off the road is one of the few things we do that I feel still makes a difference and is appreciated. Even if it’s just getting somebody out of the car for the night. Dickie’s story reaffirms this and I’m sure I’ll be thinking of him now as I’m out working.
Many of us appreciate you, and that's coming from someone who's had run ins with you boys more than a few times when younger. I got completely screwed by one cop but had another go out of his way to help me. But all that is way in the past.
Don't get discouraged. We need you, make no mistake. Only idiots think otherwise. Don't get me wrong, I don't trust you, but do respect you.
As for getting DDs off the road? Yup, that's a big deal for sure and definitely appreciated.
Thank you for being out there sir
So sad what happened to Dickie, but props to his widow for reaching out and you for trying to save some of that history.
Pray for his widow. Got give her hope and peace. 🙏🇺🇸
DICKIE JONES!! He’s a absolute legend!! RIP SIR!
Love your channel David, no shouting, no hype, ace content!
Tragic you lost Dickie… 😢
❤️🇷🇴
Keep up the great work and content brother glad someone is saving this history and keeping Dickie's name alive
MY condolences to the family and hope they are doing well. Dickie was a great American to preserve all this American history. The car community always gets together and helps out each other. Thank you for sharing David!
Back when I was in high school auto shop in 1972 one of the seniors built a Two lane blacktop clone. his dad was a doctor and was able to finance everything. the care was just as the movie car with roll cage , tilt fiberglass frontend and fiberglass deck lid and a built 454. When he got the car finished in auto shop he was too scared of it to really run it so out teacher took it out and left the longest set of black streaks next to the school ever.
Awesome memory. I think two lane blacktop did a lot for the tri five movement, and influenced a lot of 55 builds.
Props to keeping Dickies memory alive. The 55 Chevy is a dream car of mine since I seen two lane blacktop in the late 70s. When I hit 15 a friend of mine Dennis introduced me to one of his friends Raydar who had a mostly primered 55 with a built 283 and a four speed. We spent the night terrorizing a couple local towns then went to the local circuit to look for some races. It was one of the most memorable nights of my life. I hoped to buy a 55 and build it but I doubt I will ever even get another ride in a tri five again due to stage four cancer. Thank you for showing this great build, and letting me share my story. Keep doing what your doing brother!!! Awesome channel and content!!!
i always thought the 55 was the best
I had 3 57s and owned a 56 for a while back in the mid 60s but always liked the 55s because of the well formed sheet metal front end without all the big bumper and just enough trim to look good. Liked the 210s the best.
😲🇺🇸🦅
Don’t lose hope I’m going thru weekly 5 hour chemo and immunotherapy infusions , terminal esophageal cancer from my throat to my stomach. I’m building a 65 mustang every nut and bolt new or replaced everything is new or redone . Motor transmission rear end four-wheel just brakes updated power steering everything has been redone in this car. I have 2 1/4 panels and the back panel to weld on it. Everything else is done and painted waiting to be assembled wet sanded and flow coated with four more coats of clear I refuse to give up until I take my last breath.
Dickies is looking down smiling at all the cars that you’ve rescued and are going to new homes tires and wheels looked Bitchin on it right on brother
Thank you Dave for not forgetting Dickie. This world needs more guys like him.
RIP Dickie. And thank you for preserving history
i was also wondering about the whole story on this when Finnegan said drunk drivers suck. all of the cars you and your friends saved out of the yard, you should have "Dickie Jones" name written on the cars somewhere as a tribute to him.
I would say pinstripe his name on the trunks
Thanks for sharing Dave.
R.I.P. Dickie
Mr. B. Here ! You and Mike are doing the right thing ! My hat off to the young man for saving that car ! Do what is right for the vehicle . Most people would be happy to make cans out of our history. Also shortage of those who can work with there hand and mind this will show what can be done . Good luck on your trip and car !
There will never be enough two lane blacktop clones built. Love em!
👍
✌Looks good going home on the trailer. Much respect Dickie Jones. Thanks Newbern
Nothing better than a 55 Chevy!!
Love that you are saving these old cars even if they aren't something you want to build. Once they are gone, they are gone forever. They won't make any more. Keep up the good work. R.I.P. Dickie and thanks to his wife for understanding his passion for these cars.
A few years back, before Covid, I actually stayed the night at Monte Hellman's house and watched "two-lane blacktop" with him in his screening room for my birthday. It was pretty nuts.
Wow!Cool!
Even as it sits. She is pretty to look at. Thank you for sharing.
R.I.P. Dickie. So sorry to hear the news of his passing. Glad his passion for the Tri-5 will live on. I love the idea of a Two Lane Blacktop tribute car.
The two lane car had 15x8½'s on the rear and 15x7's on the front. Skinny Daisy's are next to impossible to find and extremely expensive when you do. They really only came in 15x10, 15x8.5, 15x7 and 15x4. I'm actually thinking of sending some of mine out to be narrowed. I run them on EVERYTHING!
" to lame back stop" Dicky will be lookin down with a smile 👍👍🇦🇺😃
Dickie was a good man...He let you take the 57 to live on and be the car that she needed to be..Rip Dickie from WV
Love the ending!
55, my favorite. Which is why I got a 56 Apache truck for the wife. Keep up the good work Newbern.
Its a true tri-5 when you have parts from all 3 years.
RUclips recommended this one.
Hilarious outtakes at the end.
Can’t wait to see it done great job Dave for saving those cars
Don't know if it's do-able at this late date, but perhaps someone should offer to buy the door from Dickie's garage. It would look great hanging on the wall of a shop and what a way to give a nod to a good old guy whose wisdom kept those cars safe for all those years.
Bought myself a nice 57 driver last September and doing some upgrades to her as the cold weather is here. Love your attitude and channel!
Have any pictures?
gotta see updates on this! godspeed brother dickie.
Don't drink and drive. RIP Dickie, thanks DN.
I've never been a big Tri-five guy but, that looks cool.
Very cool! RIP Dickie!!
Aww man, so sorry to hear about Dickie.
That is going be great when finished, Good luck with the build
I live in MS. and we can always use another 55 on the street. Good save.
Dave, Soda Blasting is way better on the panels of the Vehicle. Seeing that 55 has been sand blasted before, I would not use Sand Blast it again. It will warp all
the panels and worst of the roof. Also Soda is Water soluble, so it easy to remove You do not need Vinegar. Also it acts like a rust preventative, so it will give you time to get it prepped and ready to put sealer on it. Even if You sand blast You will still have to wipe down and prep the surface. another bad thing about using sand is it will still be falling out of every place possible 15 years later. Cool build. Cheers
Wow, great story, I am into the same thing with my friend Willie, I got 15 Chevelles from him and am going to get 7 57 Chevys from him and get them into peoples hands to fix up. You are right about the color, the more colors, the cheaper it is. All you need is primer and a set of wheels and you got a great looking hot rod.
Man that was very sad what happened to Dickie was a awesome find when I watched it 👍🏽 R.I.P Dickie 🙏 and thanks for saving as many as you can 👍🏽
Love those American Racing “coke bottle” 200 wheels!
Wheels are perfect, yes was typing this and you said it. YEP!
Love your work glad you and Mike still collaborating. The Dickie story was great. Loved watching it when it happened and glad y’all keep Dickie’s dream alive.
You scored With the looverd hood, I think they look good on just about any car!!
Used to drive by Dickie’s 20 years ago when I drove for Estes fro Dallas to Sweetwater
Always wanted to stop in but never did
Regret it to this day
Glad you’re helping his wife out
'55 is still my favorite!
WOW!!!! Sad story about Mr. Jones. Sending my prayers and condolences to his family and friends. That wagon sure does look like something I would love to start a project with. Too bad my current, but temporary, financial situation prevents that from happening.
Thanks for sharing Dave. That car looks amazing. I was looking at all the acreage under the hood and thinking about the power plant that could live in there. You are doing Dickie proud.
Looks awesome. Too bad about Dickie. RIP Sir.
Very cool, great vid!!! 👍👍
As a young child I met the crew of Two lane black top at a Big K shopping lot in Athens Tennessee. They were getting ready to film the airport drag race.
I'm glad to see that you are putting these old cars back on the road so young'ins won't think a cool car is a 2005 Honda with a fart can muffler. Those rear wheel openings look like they need to be introduced to Cotten like Finnigan's 1955's were.
I love your show. Coffee black use old coffee black in a spray bottle to clean the rust and it will leave a top coat to perserve the bare metal.
This video is awesome! Keep them coming! You get a thumbs up as soon as I hit play!
love that 55 the hood is kick ass i have a set rust free doors for a 55 i know they are the same as the 56 but a little less welding to do would do some trading anyway going to be a killer build
Neat stuff. Enjoyed watching ✌️ 😎
I do believe Dickie would be very happy and proud to see your 57 and that 55 Chevy running. Wishing you and your family well Take Care Sir
That looks like such a solid body!
The Two Lane Blacktop 55 is just as cool as Steve McQueen's Bullet Mustang 👍 Do it right.💪
What an incredible project, and it's going to be a blast.
I really like that hood.
Wow Dicky was killed, RIP. That hits close to home my brother was killed walking through a cross walk by a 19 year old sailor and my brother served 3 tours in Vietnam and retired from the Navy.
Great start for a 55. I have had my Nomad since 74 that i built after getting my grandfather's 55 2dr sedan 210 6 3 speed in 73. Still love them, and I'm building another 210 wagon, but I'm doing the impossible, converting it to a Nomad.
Keep the videos coming.
Love it. Great video.
Great video bud. You guys are doing ole dickys legacy real well. Keep building em, we love seeing em!!!!
A two lane blacktop, 55 chevy, never gets old.
New favorite channel. Keep up the solid work.
Good job! 👍
Build it man! 454 with a tunnel ram man.
Wish I lived closer to dickie's place. I have always wanted a tri 5 even if it was a 4door
Soda Blast. That way you can control the corrosion characteristics of the metal, maybe just by using a etching primer.
Loving your channel man. Keep it up
Can't wait to see the finished car
Love that hood !!!
Dave great video and this is the 2nd time watching it its the stories that go with the cars that are priceless and you never forget the people especially when you're also interested in the same area of hotrods your kids and the first thing you want to share your toys with your closest friends
The raised squared off rear wheel openings was a bid deal back in the 70's on Gassers and I would leave them that way. If the rear Bel Air trim still fits they were done properly.
Luckily, I've survived 32 years in towing (driving a fuel tanker now..), but I've also lost several good friends because of DUI accidents. Keep your spirits up, save as many of those old cars as you can, and R.I.P Dikkie.
Looking good 👍👍
minty. glad they will live on
Love all the hard work
Awesome content
Great build series
My dad has been looking for skinny daisy fronts for his 56 for 20+ years... I wish you luck.
Rest in peace Dickie.
You are killing it 12v!
Great video
great content!
55 Chevy post was my favorite of the tri fives! I would radius cut the rear fenders to match some big meats ! DD SPEEDSHOP Dan loves those daisies!
Terrible news in regard to Dickie passing. Good to see some of the cars getting saved though and hopefully his family are able to sell on the rest to the Tri 5 loyal and give them a new life or help keep others on the road.
Great job Dave saved another one!!
RIP DICKIE. Glad you can keep his dream alive! Got a good idea what to do with those 4 door 57s nobodys crazy about what about a streched 57? limo?
I bought more cars from out there. I got something special in the works!
Can’t wait for more of this!
1955 Chevy is my favorite car. Bucket list car for sure.
Great mates
Great video 👍
I saw Dickeys yard while on a road trip thru Texas.
Godspeed Dickie! I'm glad to see another take on the Two Lane Blacktop/ American Graffiti Chevy. Blasphemi became something else. I'm all set to see it lined up next to a yellow GTO, and a yellow deuce coupe. Maybe James Taylor and Harrison Ford might be interested in a photo op?
That's going to be an awesome car! I hope Wesley gets to be in more episodes..yall had us laughing in this one and the other episode he was in😄
I'm hoping to have my 57 ready for hotrod power tour, definitely be at cruising the coast. Maybe see ya there. RIP Dickie
it was a whole new car when you put the hood on!
Mike Finnegan and David Frieburger stopped at a place in the California desert on an episode or Road Kill. The guy had a Boat load of rims. I don't remember the man's name but I think they were looking for some rims for Mike 's 55. It was one of the early episode's of Road Kill. If Mike doe's not remember I'll bet Frieburger does.
Great video bro👍🤪
Those slicks are RIGHT.
Dammit Dave...that Impala...dammit!! I had a 64 SS years....so want another one...dammit
