I think you forgot the most crucial difference: The Pro Q is about $180, whereas this thing is something more like $35. This difference alone will probably go to make the deduction for a lot of people, especially those who need to keep their spending in check.
Yep and often half off or more. Like at the time of me writing this it’s $16. Which is just totally bonkers for a plugin of this depth and such a awesome feature set. Hornet might be the most underrated dev of all time imho. I own pro-q3, and am going to buy this today just because I like the saturation stuff. Pro-a is the best for a lot of things but I can see myself reaching for total EQ especially for collaborations where I can ask someone to spent 16-30 bucks to use the same session plugs instead of $150.
Hornet plug-ins are pretty decent for the price. Really good results with the ones that I use. I definitely am thinking about picking this one up as well!
Hornet stuff is great, especially if your on a budget! I use The Normaliser on every mixer track for gainstaging. The autogain mkii for vocals or bass is awesome as well.
I don’t own Fabfilter pro Q, so the price of this plug-in alone is reason enough to at least try it out for a couple of months (Fabfilter Pro Q being at around $150 last time I checked vs. $27 for this) Thanks for the review!
I know you are busy, but this video made me remember MdynamicEQ, which I quite like. Melda has a lot of plugins, some of them claim to have "analog" curves on them. It would be interesting to see a Snake Oil video of Melda Productions
A couple things: 1. No it does not have a treshold knob for the dynamic eq part.. what it does is automatically calculate the "general" volume of the signal and then when the signal is too high compared to the general value (or too low if you want it to go up) it automatically lower (or rise) the signal in such a way to balance it out with the standard value of the entire signal (hope I managed to explain it well). 2. You should DEFINITLY try other Hornet plugins out.. there are a lot of really really peculiar plugins that can do amazing things... I'd suggest Tape and Thirtyone for some other looks.. expecially thirtyone would REALLY be worth a look :) Also.. The Normalizer could be very interesting to check out considering that it autogain your signal on CONTINUOUS mode every time you apply a change to it.. so to make an example: you set a specific level you want your volume at (either in peak, rms or lufs).. then add let's say a compressor before it.. compress the signal.. and the normalizer will AUTOMATICALLY push the volume back up at your decided value every time you make a change :)
Hornet plugins are amazing and such good prices, I emailed the guy to say thanks for such brilliant work, the VU MK4 gain staging device is apparently really amazing.....
Wytse, the fact that you would rather run a sine wave through a plugin and click a lot of buttons than read the manual is a very good sign for your cognitive state! You think like a scientist and would rather do experiments, manipulating factors while empirically observing a dependent variable, holding other factors constant. This is the backbone of causal inference and the foundation of the Enlightenment! Bravo!
I own Total EQ; but have just discovered Toneboosters EQ-V4 which seems to do everything total EQ sets out to do - but do it better. If you follow the thead on KVR, you can see how far it's come since it's release. I just thought I would mention it; as I think it is a real contender IMO
Literally just slap it on the mix buss and let it listen to your track and it will add so much air in the smallest bands that you would never think to make such small adjustments
1. Yes, i want to see a video about your opinion on allpass filters. 2. Linear-Phase EQing is useful for lowend layers, like when you construct a kick from 2 other kicks. but i know you're more of a mixing guy. 3. Yes, this plugin looks like it adds some nice features to normal eq plugins. 4. Have you tried Wavesfactory Spectre yet? It's also sort of a mixture between an eq and saturation but with a stronger focus on the saturation part and I think it's really cool.
Love their stuff. All of their plugins are on sale up to 75% off the next couple days. Total EQ $8, Tape $6, Analog Stage $3, VU Meter $2, ChannelStrip $15 (SSL).
Just watched your video & bought the eq through your link because it was 50% off, I hope it’s an affiliate link so I get compensated a little bit, it was 13.99 euro idk what that is in US currency but I know it’s not much more than that, anyway I’m a big fan of fab filter products so I’m excited to see how this holds up against pro q3!
Good to hear you back being your usual self. Not sure why I’m feeling this but, seems like your happier or some fing, as you would say… anyway… Got a few Hornets, auto gain, etc and good to see your eq review. Ps I’ll never buy chord midi pack tracks whatever, you tube no matter how many times you do the ad frenzy on me
Hornet plugins are brilliant and are great prices, I sent the guy an email the other day to say thanks for making such good products and the sale prices are even crazier.....
The thing with Pultecs is, their filter stage is passive (i.e. they only take signal away) and the "warmth" comes from the active gain stage that's necessary to make up for all the level the filters took away. (If you boost the lows in a Pultec, you're actually taking away highs. And if you're boosting the highs, you're actually dipping the lows.) There were the original tube-based Pultecs, because back in the 60s/70s tubes simply were the cleanest way of amplifying and adding gain. Later, they also made a Pultec with a solid-state post-filter amplification stage, because the solid-state op-amps were so much cleaner and thus, at least back in the 80s. much more desirable in studios. Also, the filters in a Pultec are not a serial sequence of individually compartmentalized filters, but rather arranged as a parallel setup, so that changing one filter would affect the filter responses of all other filters differently tham in a "regular" serial EQ.
Yeaaah... i love the Total EQ, HoRNeT Tape, Analog Stage and a VU meter MK4, my next purchese will be Multicomp Plus MK2. I always buy when there are discounts of 30%, 50% or 80%
I like this. Curious to hear an A/B vs Fabfilter of the same settings as well. Maybe I will download the Demo and try it. Now I also want to run a sine through my Pultec and find out what it does to the harmonics...
They don't have copy protection, but there's a special user id code embedded in the vst that they can find if they download an illegally shared version. Then they will ban the account
I already own Fabfilter Pro Q3. Their entire suite is awesome. But this Hornet EQ, for 28 Euro's is insane value for money. At this very moment there is a one day sale going, 60% off, so right now you can grab it for 11euro. Exceptional for low budget.
Hornet stuff is much cheaper, and more on sale, than Fabfilter. The dynamic filter in Total EQ is borrowed the automatic attack and release and the automatic threshold from the HoRNet DynEQ,
Yes, but no threshold control. Waves F6 has really good dynamic EQ but is not resizable and the UI is a pain having to go to the bottom. I think I'll spring for this - currently 11Euro!
Its 11,20€!! In terms of bang for your buck and competing with FF it's bloody amazing! The UI needs some work, a bit more pop and some more love. But I'll take an underbaked UI to save $179 USD any day.
i Really would like to see your review and hear your opinion about the channelstrip mk3 of hornet plugins...i used it yesterday and i´m really amazed. Please
As others have commented, this dev makes some remarkably original and inexpensive tools. Please do review some more by them. 3 of my favs which I just bought are Analog Stage (based on your review), Syncpressor, and Thirty One mk2. Thirty One mk 2 is quite surprising, given that there are similar efforts by other more famous devs but without the spatial enhancement of this particular one. As a 31-band Auto EQ its meant to be used as a master bus fx. In Auto mode it smooths out the differences between neighboring bands and reduces masking. But in reality it also makes a track "pop" in 3D for some reason, maybe because the frequency regions it unmasks logically happen to be places that are not just dense in frequency but also in "side band" activity, so unmasking sound in that area adds stereo life as well? I don't know why Gulfoss or Teote or one of these other competitors doesn't quite have this effect, but to my ears they're different. And for less than $15-20 (with a demo) its just a no-brainer for me. One other plugin they make that I would recommend is Wah Wah, but I set the plugin wrapper (radio button) to turn on "fixed size buffers" - I think a few Hornet plugs may require this in FL Studio for some reason.
Yeah, i also put a sinewave through plugins when i'm testing them. Considering pultecs, i actually think it's mostly the phase response rather than saturation that's creating that sound, pultecs are really phasey. Too phasey for my taste actually.
I was going to be the neckbeard Oversampling Police until I saw how mild the saturation is - and I suppose when it's that slight, oversampling is really going to make no difference at all except increasing CPU usage.
I wonder sometimes what direction modern software developers would take if Fab Filter plugins never existed. They are just so instantly recognisable. Not saying however that when people use their ideas to create something new its a bad thing, because in this instance this certainly looks interesting.
All pass filter vs bypass button? 😆 This looks like Garageband eq, i like how simple drags and lite interface. Absent the saturation feature- is this same as Dynamic Eq’s?
A bit sad that it has the same cramping issues as ReaEQ. Otherwise a very good EQ for the pricepoint! Btw, just wanted to say that he has a VU-meter plug-in whit bar graphs :) It's called HoRNet VU-meter MK4. It also has auto gain where you can set the reference and maximum levels so it's absolutely perfect for automatic gainstaging. I've got it set as default chain for new tracks in Reaper with maximum set -14dB and auto engaged, so when I import tracks into a new project I just play it for about 30-40 seconds and when I hit pause/stop, auto is disengaged and all the tracks are gain staged pretty well.
It also reminds me of DMGs EQuick and it's bigger brother EQuilibrium! You should check those out if you haven't yet. I ditched PRO EQ because of them. I can't explain why exactly, but I better better results and faster!! The horizontal zoom navigation without needing to enlarge the plugin itself is a godsend. Oh, and also less CPU-hungry than Fab's, which is quite an achievement. The name says it all: EQuick is FAST AF!
There is no "they" with Hornet. It's one guy and his vision. A lot of his plugins have gain compensation or leveling built in. The only problem is, because it's a small operation, there's a bit of a lag when there are updates in operating systems or DAWs. There are compatibility issues.
I can't confirm that (at least not for macOS). There are some "big" players that do not manage compatibility even 8 months after the final release of Big Sur and/or M1 processors.
Looks realy realy good, but do I realy need it? I have so many EQs, just like most of us. Its just another EQ and it does exactly the same thing all EQs do.. Equalize.
They are probably fighting more to be your first EQ than your most game changing. The game changing thing this has imo is how much of a steal it is, it really makes professional EQ accessible.
Honestly, Hornet plugins are top shelf products, and most importantly, they are affordable. Go and look at their plugins, and you'll find something helpful that you will want to try.
I'm with Scott Hazard's comment. Hornet is a great company with reasonably priced plugins, and their products, in comparing them to other Co's, is below those price lines, but ABOVE The Median Line in their Pricing.....also an honest company as someone else said. Been buying Hornet plugins for the last yr, now about 20 of them, none are disappointing. ONE "can't do without" vst from them is their VU Meter MK4, an AUTO Gain Staging device and goes well with their LU Meter MK2, a loudness meter. So between buying Hornet's, I am also buying Plugin Alliance and Izotope products, and will eventually WEAN myself away from the TON of Waves vst's I have, because of their Update Extortion Plan.
Sorry for spoiling your next video 😀 For the readers: an Allpass filter alters the phase in a particular frequency range - which depends on your settings. Now ignite your fantasy what that could be great for ;-)
a lowpass filter (and all the other filters) also alter the phase in a specific range. the difference is that the allpass filter does so while trying to maintain the same spectral information
Have you seen/used the ReEQ in Reaper?? It's a JS plugin I saw in another video. Looks super cool and has every tool imaginable. Didn't know JS was that capable. Oh.... It's FREEEE. Wadzu Beats is the channel that I saw it on. He's a Reaper user as well.
While you're at it get their vu meter and tape plugin. Vu meter is great for gain staging and tape has very good emulations of 3 different tape machines
Just purchased it a day ago! Hornet is pretty active on Gearsl.. space. Find the thread there. I think a lot of users who giving zero ***’s on the website have issues like not knowing how to install on Catalina with the new privacy thing, for example, and then say the plug-in or dev sucks
@@hetto_blaster Funny thing is that he always makes a note on how to install in Catalina and the new M1 hardware. but they seem to want it to work in a way it doesn't work.

For the readers: an Allpass filter alters the phase in a particular frequency range - which depends on your settings. Now ignite your fantasy what that could be great for ;-)
a lowpass filter (and all the other filters) also alter the phase in a specific range. the difference is that the allpass filter does so while trying to maintain the same spectral information
Hornet VU Mk3 and their Hornet Tape are worth every penny. I use the VU Mk3 on every track, every song, every time.
I know the song's Sandstorm... But what's the song? It sounds cool.
Sunset Drive - Future Joust
Sounded like Foreigner's "I Want to Know What Love Is" and Toto's "Africa" progressions with a bit more beat!
👀 this is worth a look! We need a Snake oil mention counter? 🤣
is that a dutch & dutch 8c standing there waiting to be plugged in? or I'm imagining?
Can you review the Hornet SyncPressor? Seems interesting
Can you review ToneBoosters EQ 4?
good review!! Cheers!
Why don't you try Tonebooster Equalizers 4 ?
Loveee love HoRNet plugin s
America
Seems pretty nice, but I already have proq3. Thanks for the review.
I love that his official logo has an unnecessary analog knob graphic. Poetic.
Maybe his logo is not an emulation plugin...Lol..just maybe
Here we have Skrillex himself reviewing HoRNet Total EQ.
Hornet Tape is a nice plugin as well!
Hey, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the pultec clone by klark teknik. I've heard very positive but also very negative things about it
I’m gonna get this great EQ plugin , i like it
Read the reviews on their homepage first.. It seems the support isnt there .
Cool stuff, what about the HoRNet SyncPressor next? ;)
